Even as the elemental grabbed him in a vice grip, and the thugs moved behind him to hold him still, only one sound emerged from Virtak. He was aware of the danger he was in, but it only put a brief hitch in the laughter that was now pouring out from his mouth. "He he he, hahaha..." He would mentally berate himself later for falling into this trap, caught in his excitement of an actual challenge that he had dismissed the bandits as a threat, it would not happened again. Furthermore, he would certainly live to have that chance. By now the laughter had reached a pitch. "HAHAHAHAHA, HAHAHAHAHA!" It then drifted away. And for that matter, so did the necromancer.

"So disappointing. You had me actually thinking there was something challenging here." In response to Fitch's earlier joke, a light chuckle follows from the necromancer. "Oh yes, skeletal assistants. For a moment I was worried I wouldn't get to play because the lot of you were too busy running all over yourselves. Now though, why now..." Another chuckle. "You really are a bunch of idiots aren't you? Perhaps better than Black Addis and his lot, but that is more probably my failure." He shakes his head, not that they are likely to see it in the shadowy gloom. "Now what were my exact words from before I wonder? Let's see now, they were 'The interesting thing about a trained wizard, or indeed any other trained spell caster, is that one does not have to worry when traveling alone.' weren't they?" Another laugh. "But nowhere did I actually say I WAS alone!" A grin that Fitch is unlikely to see, Virtak's sense of vengeance and repayment was now out in force. "Do you recall my friend from Kintargo? Blight, let's have some fun!"

Blight responds to Virtak by popping back into sight and sending a bolt straight for Fitch's neck, guided by the extract of True Sight and delivering ice and poison. Then with a quick move of pulling another extract from his cloak (which is dwindling in their amount) he moves back to the Stealth
Dice Roll:
d20+14 (11)+14 Total = 25
concealment of the shrubs and trees behind him.

He doesn't say anything, being in the shadows and being a threat says enough. Virtak can speak for of them.

The necromancer was there...

...then he was gone.

The three bandits rocked unstadily as their captive vanished.

"Wha?" Vinny looked at the other two men in disbelief.

Fitch growled deep in his throat. Dropping into a crouch, dagger held before him, his eyes darted round the clearing

North Exit? No!

Fallen tree? No!

Where is he...where is he..

He twisted round still searching...

Tree line? No!

South Exit?.... Yeeeessss!

The menacing sneer slid across his face.

He straightened, arm outstretched, finger pointing.

"I see you wizzz......"

Behind him the air rippled. The necromancers companion, the one he'd called Blight, shimmered into existence his filigreed mask reflecting the scene before him:

the black souled necromancer,

the warm welcoming fire,

the back of...

...the bandits head.

He raised his weapon..

"Fiiitttch!" the call went up Vinny started to run.

Too late! The glass eyed man was already dead.

The steel tipped bolt of chilling death slipped through the air with a vipers precision and like a venomous fang punctured the man's neck. He staggered forward the knife tumbled from his fingers....

"...ardurrrrghhh!"

The final syllable lingered on his lips...

...but not for long...

...the missile burst forth in a crimson explosion, the magic crystallizing it as it went.

One step....

...Two... steps.....

The frozen fountain of gore extending two feet from the bandits neck toppled the dying man forward. With a glistening crash he hit the ground sending shattered scarlet ice crystals skittering across the floor.

Vinny skidded to a kneeling halt hand outstretched to touch the fallen. His face creased in anger his head snapping up to look for the one who'd done this but Blight had disappeared.

He turned to the silent stone creature and in a voice laced with revenge he whispered.

"Sic him boy!"

The elemental's ruby eyes flashed and with the slow grating sound of a tomb opening it melted into the ground and was gone...

Across the clearing the necromancer looked on. His amusement at this turn of events was plain for all to see.

Vinny picked the dagger up from where it had fallen his fingers tightening round the hilt . He stood, straightened his tunic with two sharp tugs and turned to face the necromancer. He was in charge now...

"Kill the wizard!" He ordered.

In response to his command the trees to the north of the clearing began to shake, wood splintered and leaves rustled...

The Witch?
.
.
.
.
No!
.
.
.
Two more bandits tumbled from the bushes and with muttered curses dashed across the clearing towards Virtak. The first drew back his arm and whipping it forward with a grunt launched a faintly luminescent green orb towards the laughing necromancer. His aim was good and the glowing bottle smashed against the wizards chest sending out a spray of liquid and covering him in a sizzling , bubbling , burning, green goo...

From the second man, a foot long stick tumbled end over end landing with a thump in front of the wiizard. Instantly it fizzed, bursting into life spilling out clouds of thick grey smoke. In seconds the necromancer was engulfed, and disappeared from view...

Something brushed against the wizards leg...

...and against his arm...

He wasn't the only thing in the fog it would seem??

To the south, deep under ground, the elemental slid through rock and earth. Above it the meat creatures moved, each foot fall sending out ripples like pebbles thrown in a pond. It could sense their passing, the three to the North, The thin one standing by the fire, the two to the south shifting uncomfortably and.....

...The invisible one...

moving with more purpose now the elemental glided through the subterranean world then angling up it accelerated towards it's target bursting through the undergrowth inches from the hidden assassin.

It fell silent, cold as the grave, rock arm out stretch pointing the way like some ancient stone blood hound.

"There he is!"

"Get the murderer!"

The two southern bandits sprinted towards the lump or rock.

They drew back their arms and as one, they whipped them forward. Two projectiles hurled through the gloaming.

The first, a bag, neatly tied, spiralled silently, landing, bursting, sticky and cloying.

The second a stick, tumbled through the air arcing towards the stone creature. It landed on the edge of the clearing and with a pop began billowing out thick grey smoke. The smoke drifted languidly amongst the the trees and bushes obscuring everything as it went.

Round 5

Vinny was dead. Having been skewered through the neck by a frosted bolt fired from momentarily visible half-orc. Blight's ability to blend seamlessly into the shadows, however impressive, was no match for the small elemental's complete connection with the ground from whence it came. The infinitesimally slight vibration of Blight's heartbeat reverberating through his boots was enough from the elemental to pinpoint the hidden assassin's exact location. Before the alchemist had a chance to recover, the two bandits were upon him, hurling bags of sticky goo and sticks that exploded into blinding smoke.

Virtak, on the other hand, wasn't out of the woods either. His sudden escape from the clutches of Vinny and his three stooges had only put him in a much more desperate situation. In response to Vinny's unexpected death, an additional two bandits dislodged themselves from the trees and engaged the necromancer with their own ranged attacks.

Acid ate through his black robes while a mixture of tar and resin threatened to affix his feet to the ground. Then, as if to add injury to insult, a web engulfed him within their sticky strands. With Vinny deceased, Virtak became well aware that there was another spellcaster in the area. A spellcaster that had yet to show themselves.

The ground before Blight rises. Forest soil formulates into humanoid form, dragging up forest leaves and earthworms with it, and an emotionless face finds the rogue-alchemist with ease.

"There he is!"
Two of the bandits come running for him, hate etched into their faces.

"Get the murderer!" Before Blight could react smoke and goo wrap his feet and the very familiar smell of sulfer fills the forest. Tanglefoot.

Blight leers at them. "And I'm gonna murder every last one of ye!" he takes from his cloak another potion, still with the other extract of invisibility in the same hand, and downs the new potion. His body becomes translucent and he leaves the confines of the tanglefoot. Like a stream of mist, Blight rises just a bit over the goo, unafraid of attack in his new gaseous form.

Virtak heard Fitch's exclamation about seeing him. He also heard the choking sound of his death. Blight's handiwork without a doubt. He didn't have much time to enjoy that thought as yet another two bandits dropped down from the swinging trees, one tossing a stick that began to spew smoke at Virtak, and the other something more painful. Virtak recognized both substances easily enough, even as he let out a hiss of pain when the acid made contact with his skin. By themselves, or even together, these things would have been fine. As it was though the webs that suddenly sprang into being around him gave credence to the fact that there actually was a caster involved with this motley group after all. Staying on the ground was becoming continuously more problematic, but fortunately for one trained in the arcane arts such as Virtak, that was a inconvenience easily solved by the application of those arts. A quick spell gave him access to the freedom and safety of the open air, save for the webs that proved to be none to keen on the idea of letting him go. His attempt to leave ended with him ensnared by the sticky nuisance. This might be a problem...

"har harr we got him Vinny, stuck im up good an' proper"

Bandit laughter filled the south of the clearing.

"...and I'm gonna murder every last one of ye!" a voice threatened from within the smoke.

"Har Har Course you are mr sticky!"
One bandit jeered. The other bandit's mirth doubled in volume.

"Hurr hurr hurr, I like that.... 'Mr Sticky'.... Yeah Mr sticky you gonna muuurder us are you ha ha harr"

More voices could be heard to the north where Virtak, entangled and blinded, fought to free himself.

"I hit dat wiz wid da acid whooeee!, burnt im good! gonna see if I...can....ungh"

The elastic strands wobbled and bounced and one of the Bandits struggled into Virtaks view through the swirling fog.

"There you are you mangy cur! I can see him Vinny I got 'im now I got...'im"

The short sword he held glistened wetly in the half light. He waved it menacingly in the necromancer face.

"snick... snick.... Ha har ....snick...snick... SNICK!"

He lunged with the sword, circling the point and stabbing it forecfully into the wizards side.

"You like that wizard! you like that...huh!"

The web bounced some more, jerking and twanging

"Hey guys someone git me out of dis mess"

seemed like Virtak was not the only one stuck in the web

There was some more cracking of branches...

Shuffling...

Padding footsteps...

Voices receding...

Laughter fading drawing near and fading.

Then Vinny's warning call came shrill...

"Shut it you lot! ....the boss is here!"

The bandits fell silent.

branches crackled and rustled something approached.

"The fiiiirreeee Vinnyyyyy!"

a hissing voice rasped.

There was some more scuffling and the light in the clearing began to dim.

"Little fly!......littttle fly!......."

Virtak could hear it moving towards him, *crack* , *crick* , *crack*, *crak*, *crik*

"Juicy.....Little.....fly....sshhh ss ss hsss!"

Was that laughter?

"Litttllle....Fly......it's...time..to..."

The air burned blue with the sound of crackling fire.

"DIE!...ssss..vvs..vss..pp.sshss!"

Lighting fizzed through the air and slammed into the helpless mage. Electric blue arcs traced like St Elmo's fire across his body entering mouth and nose and eyes, burning and searing....charring and........

The air burned blue for a second time.

Lightning fizzed through the air once more his time slipping by the twisting mage searing the smoke and leaving the burning scent of ozone thick on the air.

Round 6

The pure venom in the masked half-orc's voice gave the bandit's pause. They were used to dealing with wayward travelers and the occasional spellcaster, but what they had never encountered, before tonight, was a pair men who genuinely seemed intent on turning the tables on them. It was as if they, the bandits, had been the victims all along and these two had been waiting on their chance to shed some blood. With the masked figure's feet no longer tied to the ground, the earth elemental lost the connection to its quarry and scanned the area for a new target.

Sticky threads of silken web clung tightly to Virtak's clothing, and the more he resisted the more entangled he became. His attempt to escape drew the two nearest bandits his way. One became just as entangled as the necromancer, while the other cut his way through and plunged the end of his sword into the soft flesh of Virtak's side.

It was at that moment that both adventures heard commanding voice. Vinny responding by shoveling handfuls of dirt over the campfire. The light level in the area immediately began to diminish. Then, from a location he couldn't see, a bolt of lightning seared his flesh and clothing. A second bolt erupted nearby, barely missing the necromancer.

The consecutive flashes of light allowed Blight to catch a glimpse of something large and bloated in the trees. Blight was unable to readily identify what he had seen as the light faded as fast at it appeared. Then, without warning, a creature stepping into the fading light. The dry rasping of spidery legs brought the hideous monstrosity into view. A fusion of drow and tarantula, it was a creature straight out an arachnophobe's worst nightmare.

At 10 feet tall, the creature towered over the others as if they were merely children, and at first sight, it could have scared even the most hardened adventurer into compliance. But not the heroes of Deepamar. They were made of sterner stuff.

Virtak grunted sharply as the blade pierced his side shortly before a bolt of lightning made an attempt at skewering him. Somehow, he twisted away from the worst of it, but the painful effects of electricity were still very much jarring. In the end, it just made his desire to escape from these sticky bonds all that much stronger. Though he couldn't see it, the necromancer grasped that whoever, or whatever, was leading this band of corpses-in-waiting had emerged. He couldn't stay here, couldn't stay bound and useless save for some bit of sport to these fools. He would not die here.

He was a Maur, and even if he was the last, even if he died before finding someone to continue the family with and pass on his knowledge to, it would not be like this. Not tied and secured and not simply waiting to be finished off. No, they would die first. And then he would live, because somewhere somehow deep inside him he knew it wasn't time for him to depart the material world yet. Perhaps it was just wishful thinking, or perhaps it was some innate connection to death from his bloodline, but that knowledge felt certain.

And with that certainty, Virtak made one more attempt at freeing himself his bonds, and succeeded. Not wasting time, the dark robed mage bolted straight into the sky, a laugh bursting from his throat as he delighted in his returned freedom. The time for vengeance had come about after all it seemed...

"What the..?"

The bandit started in surprise as the Necromancer tore himself lose of the binding threads and as black as a bat rocketed into the night sky leaving only a trail of laughter rippling in his wake.

"The Wizard's Free!"

The Alarm was raised.

In the dimming light the call was answered

"Hsss..hffss..sssss.hfffssssss.sss...Naughty...Lii itttllle .....fly....hsssssff...fffsss...ss"

"Little fly." 'What the devils is that...' Blight wonders, having some time to marvel in his protective gaseous form at the spiderish drow that crept from the forest. "Juicy little fly..." He had met a drow several times, the only dark elf he ever encountered, that sold him his first poisons in a back alley. That and legends are the only reason he even knew it was a drow. "Little fly it is time to die!!"

The half-orc's mind races through all the things he heard in his times as a criminal to try and identify the creature, this puppeteer of the show.

The picture was starting to come together now. The stone campers, the trunk, and the bandits were the web draw people like him and Virtak. This, whatever it was, was the spider lurking in the center. Blight seizes up when he sees the necromancer caught in the web and that monster coming his way. Then, with jolt of thrill going up his nerves, the necromancer tears his self from the webbing and shoots straight into the sky laughing. Blight laughs with him, his voice bubbly and strange from the gaseous spell.

10' per move, so a total of 20' I believe? At a much slower rate, he too, shoots up into the sky to meet up with Virak. "Wait up, buddy!" he bubbles up.

The bubbling voice betrayed the assassins location as he floated into the sky.

They couldn't see him but they heard the call to his friend.

"...and the murderer to!"

Again the call was answered with buzzing rasping laughter

"hhsss...fffsss.vv..sss...two naughty...liii..ttle...ffliieees....fsssvvvs"

Then out of the growing darkness a stilted fizzing song could be heard drifting up.

"...what.. do.. weee do to naughty little flies?
catch them...annd..wrap them...
and suck them...dryyy..

flyy..littlee...fliess
if ...you...must.
itt won'tt be longg
til you're an empty husk..

hhsss...fffsss.vv..sss"

The laughter faded.

The fire died.

Bowstrings creaked in the darkness.

Virtak began to glow.

A ghostly violet nimbus floating on the air.

*fhut*,*fhut*,*fhut*,*fhut*,*fhut*

The creaking bowstrings released a hail of dark shafts which swarmed towards the exposed necromancer, crossed in the air all about him and sailed out to clatter harmlessly in the trees.

Kazzzaacckkk!!!

The night was split asunder with the deafening crack of lightning without thunder. Ice blue light lanced into the hovering mage encasing him again in electric fire.

and behind it all the grating sound of rock on rock....

Round 7

There was a sudden shift in the tide of battle as Virtak lifted himself bodily from the confides of the web. The bandits understood the implications of an unhindered wizard attacking them from dark shadows of the forest, but only the eight-legged, half-man leader of this band of criminals seemed unimpressed by the floating spellcaster.

Blight knew from his conversations with the dark elf, that the creature before him was an abhorrent blending of drow and spider. The process, which only a high level priestess could initiate, took place over twelve pain hours. The end result almost always left the mind of the subject broken and as such, the transformation is meant as the ultimate punishment for those not adhering to the strict hierarchy of drow society.

As Virtak lifted higher into the night sky, Blight followed suit, raising his insubstantial form higher into the air. And then, Vinny succeeded in putting out the campfire, enveloping the area under a canopy of darkness.

Luckily for the bandits, their leader had already planned for such a situation as he gave the bow wielding men a barely visible target to turn their ranged weapons against. Two of the arrows out of the flock arching towards him nearly found their mark, and while they missed, he felt the wind brush his skin as they passed. But just as he was counting his fortune, another bolt of lightning electrified the air around him, burning jagged line into his flesh.

Blight floats up to Virtak, inching as fast as possible, looking for a black blob in the starry night. Luckily with his darkvision he can make out the young man and he snakes in that direction. All of the sudden the night is shocked by white light, instantly followed by a thunderclap. Startled, Blight comes close to the necromancer. "Virtak! Are you okay?"

For a moment Virtak allowed himself to rejoice in the freedom he felt now, with the air rushing past his face as he escaped from the confines of the web below and what could have easily been his death, but removed himself from that mindset as his body was lit aglow by another's magic at work. He looks at it for a moment, feeling, knowing, he should recognize the spell but in the chaos of the situation it eluded him. Not that the specifics mattered as the bandits from below loosed arrows at him, two coming alarmingly close, kept at bay only by the magical protections that he had set on himself earlier. This was growing rather grating, nearly as much as the knowledge of the berating he would be giving himself after all was said and done for how much he had slipped up tonight. But that could wait. More troubling was with the extinguishing of the already too faint campfire he could not see much more than a few feet in front of him. That problem would have to be dealt with soon. But for now he would settle for the relief he was given as soon as he heard his friend's voice.

"Virtak! Are you okay?"

His relief shattered through the normal emotionless mask that the necromancer normally wore, and he didn't bother hiding it from Blight's orcish eyesight. "Blight!" A moment later he remembered the question he had been asked. "I've been better, but I'll pull through." Even now Virtak's mind was racing, the poisoner and alchemist was up here now, which meant he was no longer below. Beforehand the necromancer had never known precisely where the half-orc was located, and thus even if he hadn't been almost constantly ensnared by some means would have hesitated in using any of the larger, more outright destructive weapons in his arsenal, now though...

Now his thoughts were interrupted as he realized Blight was speaking again. A whispered conversation hurriedly followed between the two before Virtak finished with...

"But for now, for now I have two other problems. One, I can't see worth a damn, and two, I've had enough of being on the receiving end of these vermin's attempts at having fun at my expense without my having been able to return the favor." A tiny ball of something is molded together in the necromancer's hand as he finishes speaking. "Two problems, one solution. Or birds and a stone if you prefer." A wink that he isn't certain the other sees before the tiny ball in his hand sets itself alight like a miniature sun contained in a fiery bead before he points his finger straight down and the infinitesimal burning nova jets like a star from the heavens towards the ground below. A low roar follows its impact alongside a racing inferno that races out in all directions even Virtak grins and flies up a bit higher.
