I mean, you can take a 5-foot step and stay adjacent to avoid AoO, but then you're still casting defensively. The action of the 5-foot step doesn't provoke an AoO, but moving away still should. I think I'm interpreting that right... Casting a spell also provokes one, so I think you would take an attack either way. But, I forgot to apply Tabatha's 3 damage to that spider, so it's unconscious, it won't hit you back.
