Shadowrun 2050

Game NameShadowrun 2050

Description

The year is 2050. Advances in technology are astonishing, with humans able to blend with computers and travel through that netherworld of data known as the Matrix. Even more astonishing is the return of Magic. Elves, Dragons, Dwarfs, Orks, and Trolls have assumed their true forms, while mega corporations (rather than superpowers) rule much of the world. Moving among it all like whispers in the night are the shadow runners. No one admits their existence, but no one else can do their secret work.

This story takes place in the streets, sewers, and shadows of the Tacoma District of the Seattle metroplex, now an urban sprawl encompassing some 1600 square miles on the eastern shore of Puget Sound. Yet even this vast megaplex is but an enclave set amid even larger states ruled by Native American nations and other sovereign states of Metahumans and Awakened Beings.

Info & settingGame system: Shadowrun 5th Edition
Setting: Seattle, 2050
Game type: Pre-written (classic!) adventure
Materials: Core Rulebook
Post rate: 2x a week

The runWe’ll be doing a pre-written FASA adventure from the very early days of Shadowrun, converted to 5e rules. There will be some restrictions on gear, archetype, metatype, etc, because of the time period (e.g. SURGE hasn’t happened yet, technomancers haven’t appeared yet, etc).

I must warn you in advance that this is a (relatively) simple run that’s very much on rails. I’ll do what I can to hide the walls, and we’ll just have to see how good a job I do! It’s a fairly straightforward story that plunges you right into the action, and I’ve seen it described kindly as a good introduction to Shadowrun for players of other systems, and somewhat less kindly as “a dungeon dive” and “D&D with machine guns” (the latter of which, honestly, I think is pretty funny, who doesn’t want to play that?).

My hope is that the linearity of the adventure and the overall reduction in variables from starting in 2050 will encourage some new players to get involved in Shadowrun - if you’ve been intimidated by it before, maybe this somewhat stripped-down introduction is what you need.

Also, the story covers some key early history and groups in the Shadowrun universe! And also the cyberpunk people of the future in 2050 looked like this:

What’s not to like?

The teamPlayers

I'd like 4-6 runners, and I’m looking for a mix of experienced and inexperienced players.

If you’re an inexperienced player, I intend to build your confidence at playing Shadowrun.

If you’re an experienced player, then I’m basically going to pressgang you into helping coach the rest of us. Yeah, I said it. (I’m not trying to make you GM by stealth or The Interactive Shadowrun Encyclopaedia, though, I want you to enjoy yourself. I’m not expecting anything beyond what most conscientious players would be willing to volunteer in the first place, you're gonna be alright)

GM

“What’ll it be like playing a game with you as GM, bothers?”, I hear nobody cry. Well, I’ll tell you. I have no idea, because:

* I’ve never GM’d before
* I’ve also never really played Shadowrun much before
* I’ve no idea what I’m doing

That sounds like chaos, are you insane?

Sure. In reality, I don’t expect it to be total chaos (obviously there will be some). There will be an element of learning on the fly, but as I was preparing this game, the RPGX Shadowrun chummers asked for and received a rules queries thread, and so the stars have aligned and it’s all good. Also, Imveros exists.

I’ve put some thought into how to keep the complexity down so we don’t overextend ourselves - that reduction in variables I mentioned means less stuff to look up and learn, and it’s just a single run, we’re not attempting a Shadowrun West Marches game. But if you’re the sort of player who gets frustrated easily by others’ missteps, this may not be the game for you.

Character creationI don’t want your character sheet at the application stage. Skip it, I want your words, not your numbers.

When character sheet time does roll round, I’d prefer you to use Chummer5 (or Herolab). We’ll using the Core Rulebook only (this is once again to keep the overhead of Stuff To Learn as low as possible).

If you're new to Chummer, check out Marshmallow's So you want to run the shadows guide. Ignore the first two sections ("Chummer Legal Application Simplification" and "Build method"), they were written for the 2020 Outplay contest and don't apply here.

Character restrictions

Your basic humans, orks, trolls, dwarfs, and elves only, please.

No technomancers, y’all don’t exist yet.

If you want to submit a rigger, I strongly advise you to focus on drones instead of vehicles.

If you want to submit a decker, consider doing double-duty with another archetype - there’s not a whole lot of Matrix fun to be had in this adventure, and I don’t yet have enough experience to modify it to make sure you won’t be bored.

Similarly, if you want to submit a Face, combining that with another archetype will ensure you have enough to do - there aren't many places for a Face to shine on this run.

Gear restrictions

In 2050, amusingly, there’s no such thing as wireless. Feel free to cyber and equip yourself up to your heart’s content, but you’ll receive no wireless bonuses for anything that would normally have them. Deckers who want to interfere with stuff must physically jack in like it’s 1989.

Vast gallons of hairspray optional.

RP sample:

For this sample, I’d like you to contact your fixer, who has been light on jobs for you lately. You’re going to attempt to convince your fixer to consider you for the next gig they have coming up. What are your special skills? Why do you think you can do the job, even though it doesn’t exist yet and you have no idea what it would look like if it did? Give me about 500-1000 words - I’m interested in your tone-of-voice and personality, how you interact with some other character of your choosing in the world.

Hooks:

* Who or what does your character care about in life?
* What sort of runs or activities are beyond the pale for your character?
* Tell me a secret about your character. Use [SECRET="bothers"]secret tags[/SECRET] for this one.

Your previous Shadowrun experience:

Well? Have you been doing this for a million years, memorising the contents of every book, including all the novels? Have you only played the SNES game? Have you always wanted to play Shadowrun but have never had the chance? Lay your soul bare!

DeadlineI'm gonna say two weeks. That seems fair? Might change, I dunno. Anyway, aim to get your applications in/finalised by that most spooktacular of dates...

31st October!

Infrequently-asked questions
Q: (The Rat Queen) I assume since we're "Old Schooling it" (woohoo!), we're doing Priority instead of Sum to Ten?

Yes, please use Priority. If I'm not mistaken, the rules for Sum To Ten are listed in the Run Faster book, which we won't be using.

Q: (Ghrimm) I have extensive SR2 experience and materials... [are you] willing to work with me to update my skill set to 5e?

Yes! Players of previous editions encouraged!

Q: (Sarge67) Any problem with people playing magicians?

No problems. Mages/Shamans (and glorious deaths) are encouraged.

Q: (UngainlyFool) How might drones work in a wired world? RC? Are there any changes to rules around it because hacking a drone without wireless might prove problematic?

Yes, radio control. You'll use a "Remote Control Deck" much like a 5e rigger's RCC, but you'll need to remain within radio range of your drones. Signal jamming is a risk for drones. Beyond that, I'll need to do more reading about what was generally possible for drones in ye olden dayes.

Edited to add: I did some more reading and even a bit of thinking about Old Drones.

Q: (Sarge67) Can we buy Forbidden gear during character creation?

Yes! Standard max device rating 6, max availability 12 for all gear.

That I do. They even made a joke on the RPGX pod cast that the Shadowrun rule book is just 500p saying ask Imveros

Anyone is more than welcome to bounce ideas off of me via PM, but if you have rules questions I'd prefer you ask them on the rules question thread! I'll still answer them of course, but Zev was kind enough to give us that thread, we should use it!

Application
right-aligned image

Character name: Annwyn
Metatype: Human
Archetype: Hermetic Combat Mage
Physical description: A tall (5'10") woman with blue-green eyes hidden behind a pair of glasses and long dark hair pulled back into a functional ponytail, which only adds to her studious demeanor. She's quick to smile, however, and relax the businesslike attitude with a warmer approach and friendly conversation, though she's not much of a chatterbug. Her clothes are nice, if not particularly expensive, but comfortable, and she doesn't seem to wear much in the way of accessories. She wears a light pistol casually at her side; her only visible weapon. Once you look past the image, however, a perceptive sort will note a brimming energy waiting to be released, as if she were on a rollercoaster that had just about reached the top of the first hill.

Backstory: Annwyn's father was a highly-paid programmer in the computer industry. He lived with his young wife and newborn daughter in the Redmond district of Seattle when the '29 Crash hit. Annwyn's father was one of the thousands who lost their jobs in the fallout, and their upscale neighborhood became a violent slum. Annwyn grew up poor, which her family was unprepared for, having previously been affluent. When she Awakened during puberty, she went through a period of confusion and fear, followed by using her new gift for her own personal gratification. Fortunately, she found a mentor who took her under his wing and taught her not only how to use her skills responsibly, but also how to deal with what life had dealt her, becoming a surrogate father. He provided her with an education in both magic and academics, since she'd dropped out of school. When he fell victim to the violence rampant in the district, he left everything to Annwyn, including his library and research. She now runs the shadows to try to shift power away from corporations and a corrupt and twisted system.

RP sample:

Hooks:

* Who or what does your character care about in life? Increasing her magical skills, taking on bigger and stronger challenges, and shaking the pillars of heaven!
* What sort of runs or activities are beyond the pale for your character? Having Dragonslayer as your mentor spirit means you're up for nearly anything, challenge-wise. She doesn't do wetwork, though, or anything that would hurt the innocent. She prefers bigger, dangerous targets, and is willing to stand by her scruples.
* Tell me a secret about your character.
My previous Shadowrun experience: This will be my eighth SR character if I get accepted, but I've only been doing SR for about a year. I still rely very heavily on asking an annoying amount of questions, researching the heck out of things online, and stalking the Shadowrun Wiki. I've also downloaded a lot of the material from online. I wasn't sure what to think at first, since I was pretty must straight 5e D&D, but my SR characters have been among my most beloved, and I absolutely love the freedom you have in determining character abilities. I also love the richness of the history and culture available, so I can tie my character's past in with "current" events. I've never actually read one of the novels, though between Imveros and the others, I could probably keep up with a discussion about them. I did play the PC games, which really helped (dunno if it was SNES...I got them on Steam?) Before RPGX, I knew what steampunk was, which SR reminds me of with better technology, but didn't fall in love with it, or gaming, until later. I was first exposed to roleplay when I found a virtual reality site and was taught the basics. That kind of triggered my love of roleplay...in fact, my name (The Rat Queen) is a callback to my first character in that world!

Those were the Shadowrun Returns games by Harebrained Schemes, which like this game, are also set around 2050. They were my gateway drug into Shadowrun

The SNES game is much, much older - early 90's. The character that you meet in the very beginning of Shadowrun Returns, hiding in the mortuary drawer, is a reference to the protagonist of the old SNES game. If you'd played the SNES game then you'd really be dating yourself as a Shadowrun player!

Hey! I have very fond memories of the SNES game. Of course it threw out the whole essence concept and allowed a shaman to pack in the cyberware, but otherwise it captured the feel really well.

I have extensive SR2 experience and materials and I have recently picked up Sixth World but I sort of skipped over the intermediate versions. I have also read the first 12 or so novels. If your willing to work with me to update my skill set to 5e I would like to throw my hat in the ring.

Ha! It dates your Shadowrun experience, but not necessarily you. For all we know, you could be an immortal elf.

I have Shadowrun 6e too and would like to try it out. Main thing right now is just that more people have 5e, so it's easier to go with the edition that everyone else is using while learning how it works. I'm sure there are plenty of people in the same or a similar boat. Please do apply!

Shadowrun Experience: I played in the 90s and early 2000s but never consistent. This will be my fourth or fifth character and usually I die. Glorious deaths, but deaths none the less.
Mages/Shamans and glorious deaths are both encouraged.

I may live to regret letting magic types and deckers run rings around me at the same time, but you gotta make the mistakes before you can understand the mistakes, right?

Worry not, I will always keep myself in check. I once had to write myself a reprimand and was so good at it that others cried for me while condemning my boss (the one that was supposed to write it).

Yes, radio control. From my reading around the subject, 1e Riggers used a radio control device similar to a cyberdeck that's close enough to the 5e Rigger Command Console that I'm happy to handwave it as being the same thing. The radio transmission has a range limitation, so you'd your friend would need to escort them while remaining in range.

For drone hacking, I'd have to do some more reading about the sorts of things that were possible at the time (players who are familiar with older editions would be a great help with this, if any of you can give us some pointers). But at the very least, signal jamming would have been a feasible antidrone technique. Along with electrocution, and explosions, and gunfire, rust, corrosion, being kicked a lot, being called names, falling from great heights, drowning...

And we're done! An image is going to be hard to find, but I'm working on it. I have an artsy friend I may ask a favor of/commission for the task.

Alea Corrinae/"Mamma"
Character name: Alea Corrinae, Alias: "Mamma"
Metatype: Elf
Archetype: Mystic Adept
Physical description: Alea is a tall, lanky, pale-skinned, freckled Elf with short, thickly curled red hair. She has a wide forehead and narrow chin, large eyes, and thick lips. Her tight-ish pants and loose shirts are as plain as can be, as is her slightly tattered black jacket. If she carries weapons, she doesn't show them. She carries herself in a relaxed manner, always looking like she belongs in whatever setting she finds herself in.

Hooks:
* Motivation: Alea's only goal is to find her sister. Looking for her, or a garden square with a big tree and four fountains, is all she cares about, and finding either will cause her to retire. Immediately.
* Taboos: Alea understands that harming others is often necessary in the Shadows, but she never likes it. And she avoids working for those who simply desire to do harm when she can. She has worked in the dregs, but will still not take on a run that is purely sadistic, and seeks out those that will have a positive impact on someone.

Previous Shadowrun experience: I've played all of the PC Shadowrun games, and some time ago attempted to get through the 5e CRB, but failed. It's been a while since I've played the games, so my lingo is rusty.
