Application
right-aligned image
Name: Brenna Olafsdottir
Heritage (Gift): Human (Diehard Survivor)
Culture: Villager
Classes (Subclasses): Bard (Warchanter)
Background: Entertainer
Destiny: Excellence

Goals and Motivations: Short term goals - explore Bryn and find the red cloud. Long term - finish her epic poem and become the greatest bard her village has ever seen. Motivations - her dreams compel her to find the cloud. Her passion drives her to explore the world. Her creativity drives her to excel at her craft. Her past requires her to have achieved some level of power and ability before she returns home, lest her would-be fiancé make her life a living hell.

Deity: Fredara, Goddess of Love, War, and Artistic Expression

Connection: A jilted lover who wants revenge. Gunner Solheim, eldest son of one of the more influential elders, sought Brenna's hand in marriage, and was very upset when she rejected his request in front of the entire village.

Memento: Her unfinished masterpiece—if she can find inspiration to overcome her writer’s block. She knows she can write an epic poem honoring their ancestor's flight from Bryn. Maybe actually visiting the city will bring inspiration!

Description: Brenna is a striking young woman with blonde hair, blue eyes, and an athletic build. She's only middling height, about five and a half feet tall, but the strength in her form and expression make her appear to be more. Her voice is clear and strong, accustomed to calling out chants and war songs in the heat of battle or carrying across a busy tavern. While on campaign, she wears her long hair in a tight braid, but at home wears it long and flowing. Her clothes are home-stitched and well cared for, but not fancy or elaborate. In battle, she carries an axe and round shield, with a short sword by her side.

Brenna is very sociable, comfortable talking in large groups or one-on-one. As a bard, she tends to gravitate toward being the center of attention, but does not jealously seek the spotlight. She loves a good bawdy joke and enjoys dancing with vigor, if not a lot of actual skill. While she loves jokes, she is virtually incapable of telling one properly, usually either forgetting the punchline or ruining the delivery by making herself laugh. In her village, a common expression to describe an undesirable task is, "I'd rather hear Brenna tell a joke!"

Backstory: Brenna is from a small village called Avaldsnes down in the World Below, born of a people who take pride in their independence and self-sufficiency. Local legend has it that the town was originally founded by a group who rejected the structured and controlled life of Bryn, and set off to make a new life for themselves free of the rules and confinement of the automated world.

While life is hard in the village, the people are glad to know that they live on no-one's terms but their own. Nothing is rationed out to them and nothing is granted by an authority. Rather, it is up to each to provide for themselves, and while there is trade and a sense of community, nothing is enforced by an autocrat. The village leader is selected by informal vote and is more of a mediator to bring the village's wishes and needs to fruition - except in times of war. In battle, the leader commands and others obey so they may work as one group, one strong force together.

Brenna grew up as a farmer's daughter, but has a strong spirit. Rather than simply marry and begin a family, Brenna trains as a minstrel and a warrior. Her father tried to get her to choose between the two, minstrel or warrior, but the headstrong girl simply chose the path of a skald - a battle minstrel who sings and fights alongside her fellow warriors to inspire them with courage and passion.

What are you doing? Since the dreams began, Brenna has become increasingly convinced that the glowing red cloud is within, or represents, the World Above. The elders of her village advised against her going, of course, as Bryn was a dangerous place even for those who were familiar with it. In the end, though, go she did, and now here she is. She's not really sure what to look for, or where to go, but she suspects that if she looks around enough, she'll see or feel the cloud again...and that will be her goal.

Decide one of the following: A better, informal name for the Astral Plane (other than The Dreaming) - The World Tree

I've noticed no one has chosen a heritage gift. Or at least not written it. (It's basically a subrace, so kinda necessary)

I went with the hunter theme for ancestry gift. I did no optimization as I chose all the options that are made so far. I haven't even read the mechanical parts of the choices so far.

I added another Sorcerer archetype to the list of homebrew: the Umbral Scion. It's meant for Shadow Elves, but I'll let anyone playtest it right now~

LilleyName: Lilley
Heritage (Gift): Human (Ingenious Focus)
Culture: Cosmopolitan
Classes (Subclasses): Artificer (Scrap Crafter)
Background: Trader
Destiny: Knowledge

Deity: Mechanus, the God of Machines and Technology

Connection: Qef Colsan - a bounty hunter hired by Masud to track down and return Lilley to the Lower World. He has an investment in the girl and he is not going to just let it go. Qef and Lilley have never met, and indeed Lilley does not even have any indication of his existence. However Qef has followed her with the same single-minded determination that she possesses, and little does she realise that he knows more about her than anyone save herself. Qef is inexorable in his pursuit -- he will not give up until she is in his grasp.

Memento: A strand of Anjelica's hair that she keeps inside a locket around her neck. It is the only connection she has to the life she had before and losing it would sever the last strands of sanity she has left.

Description: There are two striking features that leap out about Lilley. The first is her piercing blue-green eyes. Eyes set on features that would otherwise be attractive.....were it not for the fact that she looks at you in the same kind of way that one would look at a small flying creature that they were about to dissect. Lilley lacks warmth in her expression and her bearing, and this is something that becomes perfectly evident when she opens her mouth and speaks. Lilley's voice is dispassionate and emotionless. She speaks with as few words as possible, and when she does it is with a clear and concise precision.

Precision -- it is this word that sums Lilley's appearance up perfectly. Everything about her, to her flame-red hair to the clothes that she wears has a manufactured aura about it. Cold, pristine....perfect, yet the sort of perfection that one would attribute to a robot more than a human being. And that is Lilley. If one were to put a word on her appearance and aura, it would be thus ~~ manufactured. A woman who, irrespective of her humanity, is like she is more machine than human.

Lilley is committed to the perfection found in technological advancement. Her intellect borders on near genius and she is relentless in the twin pursuits of science and technology. Yet, hers is the sort of single-minded brilliance that brings with it a sacrifice, and in Lilley’s case it has come at the cost of her humanity. She is cold ~~ colder than ice, and with it is a dangerous hint of arrogance, the sort of arrogance that does not just believe she is better than everyone else.....she accepts it as a matter of fact. Other people....how can they even expect to exist on the same plane of comprehension that she does? How can they ever expect to understand or see what she sees? How can anyone possibly see that what she does, the sacrifices that she makes, that it is all for a cause that is nothing less than the advancements of her species? That what she does....it is not just for the betterment of herself but for the betterment of humanity as a whole..... Her intellect exists on another plane, considering matters too weighty for the average person to think about. What Lilley does not explain or discuss though, are the demons that haunt her sleep at night. The things she has done in the pursuit of knowledge, the terrible terrible things that stain her soul and torment her with terrible nightmares. Perhaps these are the things that drive Lilley to tail off mid-speech, as her mind goes back and revisits dark memories she would rather rid herself of. Perhaps it is these dark stains that truly cause Lilley to encase her heart and emotions inside a block of ice.

Backstory: One night, in a refuse strewn tunnel found somewhere in a nameless slum in the Lower World, the proprietor of a boarding house of particularly ill-repute, one Masud Radu, found an abandoned babe in swaddling cloth. On that day, an act of extraordinary selflessness and nobleness occurred. Where most would have been tempted to sell the human foundling into slavery — the price of a human child indeed attracting a large price, Masud did not. Instead he set about raising the girl as if she was his own, for reasons he kept to himself. Over the years, Masud watched the girl grow, and he watched keenly as she began to exhibit the sort of intellect that was beyond most people that he had met over the years. Young Lilley was fascinated by technology. There was nary a day that went by that she could not be found tinkering with the scrap metal she would often pick up from the streets or experimenting in some way — be it dead animals or live ones. She was a strange child, strange in ways that both fascinated and disturbed Masud. Indeed Masud found himself often wondering who she truly was, almost as often as he feared the path she seemed to be walking. There was a coldness about her, a strangely emotionless detachment from reality. Masud began to wonder if there were dark places and things inside the girl, a darkness that she was capable of that she had not yet displayed. Her detachment from life and the way she experimented on her pets certainly indicated to him that she held little value or regard for living creatures. Still, the girl earned her keep and Masud had no real cause to regret taking her in. And things were good, for a time at least.

But then, as weeks turned into months into years, something else happened. Lilley fell in love with another girl by the name of Anjelica, and for a time in her contentment she became almost human in her mannerisms and dealings with others. Foregoing her experiments and enjoying these new sensations that she had never experienced before, Lilley looked for a time like she would find true happiness. The night when Anjelica was struck in the head in a bar-fight.....the night she sank into the coma was the beginning of the long spiral downwards for Lilley. She sat, day after day, night after night, her hand in Anjelica's, wishing for the girl she loved to come back home. But she did not. Her mind was gone. Rather than seeing her, a sad empty shell of the person she once was, Lilley euthanised Anjelica. That night, her heart broke, as did the last vestiges of warmth and compassion that she had. Not just her heart, her mind shattered into a thousand disparate shards -- a floating flotsam each containing a single shard of the person that she once was. And then, it came to Lilley. This -- this was something she could do something about. She had to do something about it. She couldn't just say goodbye to the only person she had ever truly loved. Out of desperation borne from the insane rather than the logical thought process of a rational person, Lilley exhumed Anjelica's body. Gathering, stealing the parts she needed, she worked day into night into weeks into months. But in the end it was done -- a hellish conglomeration of machine and human. Yet there were things that Lilley could not do. She could not bring life back to the dead, and for all her efforts, she had done nothing but desecrate Anjelica's body. Broken, Lilley wept as she destroyed the monstrosity, and she fled.

She had no place in the Lower World anymore, not after what she had done. Her broken sanity could not withstand the grief that was threatening to consume her. Lilley fled, to Bryn, through means she still could not truly understand. Was magic utilised to get her to the surface, or was it just dumb blind luck? Regardless, she offered her services as a skilled Artificer to any place that would hire her. She went from place to place, never staying in the same location for long, always earning enough to just about make ends meet.

What are you doing? That red cloud, its real right? It has been a long time since Lilley could distinguish between what was real and what was not. Regardless, she has convinced herself that this red cloud is the answer to all her problems. With it she will be able to return the dead to life, and her own shattered mind and self will be whole again. She is currently in the process of trying to see if there is anything at all that she can research and learn about it.

The surname of a fancy/influential family (can be repeated): The Dustguard Family

I'm seriously considering this as I have had the books for ages but never got a game!

Just awaiting on another game app to see if I have the bandwidth, but the would-be DM has gone radio silent.

Anyway, conjuring up the dea of a norse style berserker.

ApplicationName: Vasnola D'Amosa aka 'Vas D'Amore'
right-aligned image

Heritage (Gift): Elf (Prescient Vision)
Culture: Shadow Elf
Classes (Subclasses): Sorceress (Songweaver)
Background: Cursed
Destiny: Underdog (Open to suggestions)

Goals and Motivations: (at least two short term and two long term goals, and two things that motivate your character into action. More are always nice)

Short Term
  • Survive the night.
  • Check on her family to ensure her actions didn't affect their well being.

Long Term
  • Find out how to stop her red cloud dreams. She assumes they are another manifestation of her curse and dreads the dream where she reaches the red cloud.

Motivations
  • Provide for her family.
  • 2
Deity: The Long Quiet (Unending Life)

Connection: A scholar or researcher obsessed with the entity that cursed you.
Memento: A unique scar, discoloration, or other mark on your body which shows your curse. Cursed, black hands with black veins up to her elbows, along with black nubs on her back, marks of the fiend that cursed her.

Description: As she takes the stage, your eyes are drawn to hers. The glow is just a prestidigitation, but the red is natural, as is the white around the red. A product of her cursed heritage. As you run your hand across her bare skin you notice it's softer than you initially thought, a creamy white. It’s somewhat covered by a thin black dress, but mostly covered in tattoos. Those on her back are covered by coal black hair with streaks of red. As she turns, you see the black nubs on her back, a sign of her damnation. The gloves along your face, separating her skin from yours, cover hands black as night, the blackness tracing her veins just past her elbows. And that is why you’re here tonight, for a touch of those hands, Blessing D’Amore.

Vas’s sole responsibility in life is providing for her family. Her method is less than ideal, but she knows how to be good at her job. She knows what makes men tick, and isn’t afraid of using that to her advantage. She loves the attention that she gets from being on stage.

Backstory: Where there's darkness there are secrets, and secrets abound with Vas.

Vasnola was blessed with beauty beyond measure, and a voice that would rival a nightingale's song. Unfortunately, somewhere long up the line of her mother's lineage, a curse was put upon the daughters of the family. The curse causes the females to manifest traits of a fallen demon. In Vas's case, it's black leathery hands, soot black veins, and two nubs on her back of undeveloped (god can only hope) demonic wings.

For as many generations as they know, Vas's family has lived in the tunnels under Bryn. Everyone pulls their weight, and they make due as best they can. Vas's role, is to use her blessings, and curse, to the best of her ability. She's found that while her beauty and voice can get her on the stage, what garners the crowd is her curse, the mystery, the danger of being so close to something so cursed.

What are you doing? She had gotten to work late, after a particularly worrisome dream regarding that damned red cloud. She didn't like it, and it put her on edge, then add being late, and it was not a good start to her evening. She was in the middle of her third dance/song of the night, and she was laying into the curse pretty good. She had removed her gloves and started to caress the face of one of her regulars - Leif Baird, a captain of the Bryn guard.

She knew it was pay day for him, and her family's cabinets were getting bare. As her hand traced down the side of her face, a piercing pain went through her head. Her eyes shut tight and she was in visible pain. She saw the cloud at first, then Leif, standing over his murdered family, knife in hand. She opened her eyes, shocked at the vision. One glance at Leif told her that he knew all too well what her vision had been.

His eyes turned to blind rage, and she was gone. Out the back of the tavern, grabbing what clothes she could, and taking every turn in the tunnels that were less traveled. She had to hide, to survive. She had to RUN.

The name of a cozy and inviting café - Nine Casks
