Game NameIn What Dark Dreams May Come
Game SystemDnD 5e
ThemeThe loss of friends and family, unravelling a strange mystery that has befallen the village in which you live
FlavourStrong Mystery and Investigation, Cosmic Horror, Sandbox
Plot Summary
The Village of Winterhaven
left-aligned image
Hidden away deep inside the Spine of the World lies a tiny village, hidden from the rest of the world in its isolation. This tiny village, known as Winterhaven is home to no more than a handful of hardy folk that have survived as the world passes them by. The nature of their existence and the harsh climes that they live in define their existence and who they are. Each and every day is a struggle for survival, a battle between these tenacious and determined people and the treacherous and hazardous environment that surrounds them.

The people of Winterhaven have survived much. The bitter cold winds sweeping in around them, freezing both bone and marrow. The multitude of dangerous predators that live within this hostile territory, looking to prey on the weak and unwary. The desperate hunt for food amidst this realm where one false step could lead to death. And yet each of this trials and tribulations the good people of Winterhaven face with as much of a smile on their face that they can muster.

This small village of hunters and trappers is a tight knit community where everyone knows each other. It is a place where those outcast from other places in the world can come and seek refuge. Here, the past is of no import, as long as you are willing to contribute to the community at large and the ceaseless fight for survival you will be welcomed with open arms.

Despite the harsh and difficult life here, for many this place is somewhere to call home, and more importantly, it is your home.

The Dream
right-aligned image
It was so vivid that you could almost believe it was reality itself.

You stand above a great and city that stretches beneath your gaze as far as the eye can see. The streets of this city join together and bisect each other as they split through this great concrete wilderness, a veritable maze of twists and turns as one street runs through another. This place…it is vast. So impossibly vast and labyrinthine, almost alien in the way it twists in on itself. The sun rises now, and as it rises and casts its rays over the world below, you see something so unbelievable, so remarkable that it must be impossibility itself.

The suns light reflects off the great city below. It not just reflects, it glitters…..it sparkles. It is then that you understand finally. This city, it is made entirely from gold. Drawn to the great city like the proverbial moth to a flame, you scale the rocky outcropping on which you stand, sliding down carefully as you reach the ground below. Your feet act almost of their own accord as you take one tentative step forwards after the next. Your mind screams at you to stop…..stopSTOPSTOPSTOPSTOP!

But you can’t stop, your will is no longer your own. You have seen this beautiful, impossible sight. You must head towards it, you are compelled to learn more about it, despite the growing, gnawing sensation inside of you that something terrible, truly terrible lies in front of you.

There are people here inside this great, strangely alien city of gold everywhere you look. They work the streets, cleaning them. They work on the buildings, repairing them, or helping to construct new buildings. They work the fields, tending to the rows upon rows of golden crops that are growing in the farms on the outskirts of the city as you pass through them, drawing ever closer to this strange, yet beautiful place. The people, they seem happy. Each and every one of them, they have a bright, beaming smile on their faces, showing their happiness and delight at living and working in such a wonderful place.

It’s the eyes. They tell a different story. Their eyes are almost empty, their expression glassy and unfocused, emotionless. A strange juxtaposition when compared to the broad smiles on their lips that never EVER leave their faces….

…..except that that’s not quite true, is it? There is something there, in those eyes. Something deep, something almost….unspeakable.

Desperation.

Something appears in the distance that you can see now for the first time. A tall structure, a ziggurat, it goes up into the sky itself, disappearing into the very clouds. Strange that you couldn’t see it before when it is so large and it looms tall even over this bizarre city and its shadow engulfs everything beneath it.

Somewhere, a bell begins to ring. It is loud, and it’s peals pierce the strange atmosphere in this place. It rings, again…again…..again….AGAIN. It is then that you sense it. Something that is impossibly alien and incomprehensible, far far beyond the understanding of anything you have ever known before. There is a consciousness of sorts here inside this city.

It reaches out with dark tendrils probing, looking to ensnare your mind. You feel something touch your consciousness, it feels oily, slimy, corrupt….madness….impossible.

The people, they stop still at the sound of the bell. As one, they turn to gaze towards this strange ziggurat, stock still. Seconds pass, turning into minutes, these people seemingly stuck in something that is beginning to increasingly resemble a gruesome, bizarre tapestry. Then, almost as it begins to look like they will never move again, they turn en masse to face you. One after the other, they lurch towards you, those disconcerting smiles still frozen below those empty, desperate eyes…..

***

You wake in a cold sweat. It is with no small relief that you find yourselves in your rooms and beds.

It was a dream, nothing more. You determine to go about your daily business and forget about it.

It is the strange stillness in the air that alerts you initially to the fact that something here is not quite right.

The village is deserted.

There is no one else here. Everyone is gone, and you are left all alone…..

About the gameHi all, first of all thank you for taking the time to read this advertisement. This game will be using D&D 5e 2014 rules only, as I do not yet have the 2024 core rulebooks.

This game is at heart a mystery with a sprinkling of horror. You are thrust into a situation where everyone in the village you live in has disappeared apart from yourselves and the game, at its core, will center on uncovering the mystery of what happened to everyone else in the village and whether or not these strange disappearances have anything to do with the unsettling nightmares you are having.

This game will be story and role-play focussed. I’m not a fan of using combat for the sake of combat, so although there will be plenty of combat encounters in here, they will be in service of the narrative and used to further the story rather than me throwing a combat encounter against, say, four goblins, just for the sake of doing so.

I do have a tendency to apply the "rule of cool" when appropriate - if there are any rules lawyers who have a problem with this then again this is likely not the game for you.

The posting rate for this game will be enough to keep the game going at a respectable rate -- I think about two posts a week would be more than sufficient for what I am looking for.

Providing I haven't scared you off with all of the above, I'd like you to provide me with the below for a character:-

Name:
Age:
Race:
Class:
Alignment: Non-evil characters only please.
Personality:
Appearance:
Backstory:

Acceptable sources will be restricted to PHB, Xanathar’s and Tasha’s only. In addition to the above, I’d like you to provide me with a small character overview of an NPC with some connection to your character. A paragraph or so with a brief overview of the NPC and the background between them and your character is sufficient for this.

We will start the game at 1st level and we will be using point buy for character ability score generation.

That is absolutely fine with me.

EDIT: I actually love rangers, I’m playing one in my IRL game and they’re brutal when they get past the first few levels

Name: Eryndor Flamewhisper
Age: 20
Race: tiefling
Class: bard
Alignment: ng
Personality: Eryndor seeks wealth in a vain search to find love and immortality. He has begun using his powers to help Winterhaven secure the settlement from beasts and the elements. He is a skilled actor and diplomat. The dreams have him generally curious and hopeful that such a city may exist.
Appearance: A red tiefling with missing teeth who generally seems slightly drunk or clumsy. He wears the clothes of a bureaucrat as a bards guild member. He has scrolls that are burnt and barely readable that he has written.

Backstory: Born under ominous celestial signs, Eryndor Flamewhisper was immediately marked as different. As a tiefling with red skin, horns, and a tail, he was shunned by most of his peers. Eryndor's early years were shaped by an insatiable curiosity about what drives people, and his natural talent for performance led him to become a bard. Despite his clumsiness, Eryndor found solace in music and storytelling, weaving protective spells and enchantments through his bardic magic.

Eryndor's motivations are complex, but at his core, he pursues wealth not for material gain, but to secure the love and stability he feels he deserves. This pursuit often places him in morally grey areas, but his intentions are rooted in a desire to help others and find a place where he belongs. His greed for priceless artifacts stems from a belief that these objects can be used to better the lives of those around him, rather than for personal gain.

Despite missing a few teeth and being notoriously clumsy, Eryndor is a skilled actor, using his charisma to navigate social situations and bring joy to others. His spellbook, scarred by dragonfire, symbolizes his resilience and determination. Each ruined page is a testament to his struggle and perseverance.

Name: Ailbe
Age: 20
Race: Human Variant
Class: Druid (Circle of the Land)
Alignment: Neutral
Personality: Devout and protective of nature. If she has a sense of humor, most people don't get it. Tends to be a bit literal-minded as well. She speaks very deliberately, as though weighing every word before she speaks. Kind-hearted, but beware the nice ones!
Appearance: A young woman of average height, with blue eyes and long blonde hair tied back in braids. She wears skins and furs of local animals as clothing and protection, with a bone-handled scimitar and wooden shield for defense.
Backstory: Ailbe is a member of a circle of druids dedicated to protecting and preserving the natural state of the Spine of the World. Generally speaking, her Circle does not intermingle much with civilized areas except for occasional trade runs, even ones as remote as Winterhaven. But when she woke up one morning and her entire Circle was gone without a trace, she traveled to the town in desperation.

Unfortunately, when she arrived, she found the town virtually abandoned, save for a handful of people who seemed just as confused and worried as she was. She offered to act as a guide to the area if they would allow her to travel with them to try to figure out what has happened.

The dream disturbs her. The giant city, large beyond her previous imaginings, frightens her...not just because of her inexperience with large settlements, but because she fears it may signify the destruction of all natural areas in favor of sprawling cities.

Small character overview of an NPC with some connection to your character: Rígain, Elder Circle of the Land druid. She leads the druids of the Spine of the World and personally mentored Ailbe in the ways of the land. Ailbe considers her as a mother/grandmother figure and was devastated when the old woman was among the disappeared.

Zeedee Quaveri
right-aligned image

Name: I'm Zeedee Quaveri! Gosh, you must be new around here if you haven't heard of me!

Sheet: https://www.rpgcrossing.com/profiler/view.php?id=95234

Age: Hey, that's kind of a rude question don't you think? I'm young, 13 in dragonborn years... so yea, you do the math? Kind of an adult, but not quite an adult? Childhood goes kind of fast for my kind, and then realllllly sloooows dooown. Kind of sad that my tail and wings are ever-shrinking though.

Race: No, I'm not an albino tiefling. I'm a dragonborn actually!

Class: My family is working class, like almost everyone in this icy village. But that's not the class you're asking about, is it? I'm a sorcerer (wild magic) then, although not such a great one... yet.

Alignment: My posture is just fine thank you very much! If you mean, how "mean" am I, then I'm good, but not sure about those law things yet. Neutral good perhaps?

Personality: Is this some kind of interrogation? I'll have you know that I'm quite lovely! All smiles most of the time. Like a breath of... oh... sorry, forgot, breath and dragonborn kinda scares some folks. I'm energetic, curious, talk a lot, and really just marvel at the world and its mysteries. What I really seek is acceptance, friendships and validation.

Here's the fine print. I'm an impetuous handful! A pocket of laughs, blushes, cheeky remarks and endless desires for a snow cone or three. I lack direction, and look to my elders or pretty much anyone bigger than me for tips and advice. I take things on face value too.

Around the village, I'm considered what people call a "liability"... take from that what you will.

Appearance: The village artist Quiddo did a painting of me. You can see it over there on the right hand side! That's your right, not mine. So given that everything around here is covered with white most of the time, I've made the fashion choice to take a leaf out of the snow-covered library's books. It helps me blend in don't you think?

My skin is silvery white. Permanent glitter for the win! My smile is infectious, and my eyes are big enough to swallow you up whole. Don't go touching them though!

Backstory: Winterhaven has mountains nearby, and what I've been told is that a team of hunters once head out from the village in search of something everyone likes. Food! As a change of pace from stalking rabbits or whathaveyou, they had a dabble in the cave system in the previously mentioned mountains. Probably hoping for a big juicy bear, a pocket of mushrooms, or something like that. Well, they found an egg! The hunters argued about it for quite some time, many wanting to make a giant sunny-side-up from it. Others, the smart ones, said they should take it home, care for it, and maybe learn something from the experience. It was my lucky day! The smart ones won the debate, and I was carried back to Winterhaven and put in the care of Dinglow the alchemist. You can learn more about him below!

Rather than using me in a new concoction, or trying to make the egg turn into gold, Dinglow kept my egg nice and cool (pretty easy to do around here), and then watched as I hatched! Did the alchemist want a human-ish dragon baby thing? Nope! So, he gifted me to a nice young couple of humans who wanted to adopt.

My mother and father, Finell and Froho have been caring for me ever since... as best they can. Her job is to heal people and treat their chill blames and stuff, his job is to clear roads with a shovel!

Dinglow the Alchemist
right-aligned image

I'm Dinglow, yes, you may come in.

You wanted to enquire about little Zeedee?

Hells! I have no idea where to start. Her parents aren't the sharpest tools in the shed, and honestly, the tools in my shed are the sharpest in town! Except of course for the blacksmith, who has the real sharp stuff. As for sharp... Zeedee is sharp too. I honed her that way! An education! That's what I gave her. I'll confess that breathing in some of the fumes of my varied complex concoctions, or my pre-birth experiments on her egg might have slowed her ahem... emotional development, but she's a good soul. I've done my best to be something of a grandfather figure for her. The one person in her life that spoils her, and also likes to share a good tale or two. She comes to me for guidance, and not just the cheap spell kind! So, yes, we're friends. We're family. She's also about the only person in the village who cares about my work. There's so many sniveling idiots who complain that I never have to do hard labor like everyone else. Collect wood. Forrage. Guard the walls. Tough luck! I'm busy making things that ensure our fires burn brighter and longer! If Zeedee was a fire, she'd be the brightest of them all... in color, but not intellect of course.

Like me, she has a gift for magic. It's just unfortunate that she's not good at pointing her finger the right direction when casting something, or occasionally gets words muddled up. Maybe if you visit again, I'll tell you about that time she "accidently" teleported into the town's only working snow cone machine...

Character Concept
right-aligned image

Name: Anghus Talbert
Age: 21
Race: Variant Human
Class: Fighter 1
Background: Guild Artisan (Carpenter)
Alignment: Neutral Good

Personality:
Anghus is a humble, quiet man who works hard and treats others with respect. Calm and reserved, he prefers the simple things in life - a warm meal, a tankard of ale, and a fire to sit in front of is one of life's greatest pleasures. He was never much of a reader (primarily due to his dyslexia) but he is sharp and has a good dose of common sense which serves him well in life. He enjoys creating things with his bare hands and being able to help others with the skill the gods have given him. He is generous and loyal to Winterhaven, and likes looking out for the others in their hardy little town.

Appearance:
Although of average height, Anghus is broad shouldered and stout, with his torso is the size of a whiskey barrel. He has heavy limbs and thick hands, which are callused due to physical labor. His head is freshly shaved over coarse features, with a pronounced brow and brown eyes. His nose is wide and somewhat flat, with a square jaw and thin lips. He is not unhandsome, but no bard will be singing tales of his beauty anytime soon. He typically wears a leather apron over a loose shirt and pants, which has multiple pockets for his wood working tools. During militia training or as required, he favors a heavy suit of chain mail armor with a blue tabard bearing the Winterhaven crest.

Backstory:
Anghus was born and raised in Winterhaven. His mother died during child birth so Anghus and his older brother Seth worked in their father's wood shop from an early age. Their father Geoff Talbert was the town carpenter and the two boys learned their trade at the hand of their father. As the two got older, both of the boys began to fill out just like their father so they joined the city militia to defend it against any trouble that may come. Anghus took to the training and enjoyed it, even thrived in it, but Seth always had a problem with authority and begrudged his lot in life. When Seth became of age to take over the family business, Geoff offered but Seth refused, instead telling his father he was leaving Winterhaven to go into the trade business and become wealthy. The departure of Seth devastated Geoff, and even with a willing son to take over the family business he was never the same man he was after that. Anghus soon took over full ownership of the shop so his father could try to recover from some nagging health issues. Sadly, two winters ago, Geoff caught the winter sickness and because of his previous health ailments he wasn't able to recover and passed in his sleep. Anghus is the last Talbert living in Winterhaven and with no wife to speak of he may be the last of them at all. He does not know what happened to Seth - the only knowledge he has of Seth is months after his father passed he received a hand written message from Seth with with the seal of Cormyr on it. Seth did not tell Anghus where he was or what he was doing, only that he was sorry to hear of the loss of their father and that Anghus was the better choice for handling the carpentry business. Anghus has thought about traveling to Cormyr since to see if he can find Seth, but there are no days off when you're the carpenter of Winterhaven.

Connected NPC:
Seth Talbert, his older brother, was in Cormyr as of a year and a half ago. Anghus loves and respects his older brother, and although Seth stated he felt Anghus should have been the one to take over the shop, some days Anghus feels like an intruder being the one in charge. Although they had their fair share of fights as children (and then some - Anghus' nose still bears the marks of his brother's fist years later), the two were the best of friends and were close.

Name: Gorath of the Green Wood
Age: 20
Race: Half-Orc
Class: Paladin (to be Oath of Ancients)
Alignment: LG
Personality: Quiet. Intense. Disciplined. Prone to bursts of anger and outrage.
Appearance: Impeccably groomed. Tall and muscular. Does his best to hide or tone down his orcish features.
Backstory:
Gorath is a towering half-orc whose quiet intensity reflects his upbringing among the druids of the Green Wood Forest. Found as an infant and raised in a circle devoted to nature’s delicate balance, he was taught to honor the ancient powers that govern life and the harmony of the natural world. From the druids, he learned patience, wisdom, and the sanctity of life, but their insular ways left him yearning for a larger purpose. Their teachings instilled in him a profound sense of duty to protect the beauty and order of the world, ultimately inspiring him to follow the path of a Paladin of the Oath of the Ancients.

Seeking to expand his understanding and dedication to his newfound path, Gorath traveled to Winterhaven, where he met Norwill Lorovar. The half-elven cleric of Silvanus became a mentor to Gorath, guiding him with his gentle wisdom and experience. Norwill's mixed ancestry helped him connect with Gorath’s struggles as a half-orc in a world that often views him with suspicion. Norwill’s teachings about balance and compassion resonated deeply with Gorath, helping him refine his sense of purpose.

Now, armed with his innate strength, his blossoming faith, and the teachings of his mentors, Gorath sees the recent strange occurrences in Winterhaven as a chance to defend life and confront the malevolent forces that may threaten the delicate harmony he has sworn to protect.

Small character overview of an NPC with some connection to your character: Norwill Lorovar, half-elven cleric of Silvanus: Norwill is a revered figure in Winterhaven and a calming presence in times of unrest. His silver hair and piercing eyes give him an aura of wisdom and serenity, while his mixed heritage allows him to empathize with those who feel like outsiders. As a cleric of Silvanus, Norwill has spent decades acting as a bridge between the natural world and the people of Winterhaven, fostering mutual respect. He took a special interest in Gorath, recognizing the young half-orc’s potential as a protector of harmony. Norwill’s mentorship has left a lasting impression on Gorath, whose every action reflects the elder cleric’s lessons about balance, compassion, and strength tempered by wisdom.

Name: Thodin Truebronze
Age: 68
Race: Hill Dwarf
Class: Cleric (Forge Domain)
Alignment: NG
Personality: Thordin is solid, both in body and personality. Quiet and thoughtful, he chooses his words carefully. Though a priest, he chooses to preach little. His alter is the forge and the ringing of his hammer is all the choir he needs.
Appearance: Thordin is taller than most dwarves, but still broad with solid shoulders. His skin is bronzed as his name, though more of an effect from his heredity than the sunlight. He shaves his head bald, but keeps an impressive black beard that hands to his chest. He almost always wear a pair of leather gloves over thick hands hardened by a life of forging all matter of objects from swords to plowshares and horseshoes.

Backstory:
Thordin wanted to be a rebel. He came from a long line of clan craftsman, skilled blacksmiths in every field one could experience. He had seen it all this, done it all, and had even became journeyman just from growing up. But Thordin hated it. It was so typically...dwarven! Human and elves who came seeking their goods all saw every last dwarf as a blacksmith or a battle-hardened axe-wielding warrior or both. The occasional craftsman of other kinds and merchants did little to dissuade anyone. Someone had to sell the weapons and make the houses, right? But everyone else....smiths or warriors. Oh, and heavy drinkers

The most frustrating thing was that the stereotype wasn't far off! His people reveled in it! They loved it! It was damn frustrating to have his entire race play into the prejudice of other races. And his family was even worse. Even worst, Thordin was a good smith. He enjoyed working the forges. He would haven been happy working at his parents forge until he completed his materwork and went down into legend. But he couldn't help but feel that everyone else out there was laughing at his race and him in particular. Be a good dwarf. Accept your place. Gah!

He tried to be a wizard, to be different, to push himself to do differently. He wasn't necessarily dumb, but he just didn't have the knack. The parts most interesting to him had to do the theory of mixing the arcane with weapon crafting. He hated himself a little for that. He tried to learn woodcraft, but he just stomped around the brush and missed everything he ever tried to shoot with an arrow. Which was sad, because he had made exceptionally sharp arrowheads. He hated that he was prouder of that than actually hitting anything. He tried to train in the finer arts. He couldn't carry a tune to save his life. His paintings cause plenty of oweing and ahhing at his abstractionist style. Except he had been trying to just paint a regular bowl of fruit.

Carving went better. He really got into it, getting lost into making the whirls of shapes in the wood. Then he stopped and realized he'd been carving the handle of a hammer without even realizing he'd defaulted to this. Angry and frustrated at his own failure to be a rebel and defy his heritage, he left his home. Marched from the hills, not knowing where he would end up. Just that he couldn't stand being a good little dwarven smith any longer. Couldn't stand one more smug elf smiling his stupid elf grin at his stupid craftsmanship. He wanted away from his that life, though he didn't know why.

Thordin ended up with a lot of time to think. A lot of time to reflect on himself and his one man rebellion. And realize how childish he had been. Selfish even. He loved the forge and that was just fine. It was good. He still wanted for his people to be more than the stereotype. But he had to be himself, he had to be an adult and peruse his passions. Still, he wandered. For weeks. Then months. A full year letting himself be guided, though he didn't realize that was what was happening yet. A year or more, just traveling. Thinking. Maturing. It grew colder and colder, but he continued on, feeling drawn towards something. There was a forge calling his name and town needed his skill. Winterhaven needed a skilled smith as badly as he needed to be at the forge again.

It didn't take long for him to realize it was a god that had drawn him. Had it always been this god that drew him onward, that set him on this path? It didn't speak to him in words. He couldn't say if it was male or female or if that even mattered. What he did know is that it gloried in his work as much as he did. He poured his soul into every nail and horseshoe. Smiled at his reflection in the mirror polished blades he made. He began to pray at his forge, doing what felt right and listening with his heart. Thordin had found peace at last, peace in his heart and peace in his work. He was happy here in this harsh little quiet town, happy at his small forge that he worked alone. He was a blacksmith, an artisan of metal, a stereotype perhaps, but that was fine by him for once.

Small character overview of an NPC with some connection to your character: Cornwall, the owner and proprietor of the largest inn in town. He is the only man in town who has any idea what a good stout beer really was about. Cornwall also kept a team or draft horses for when the town needed some real muscle to move large loads, and Thordin saw they were shoed as needed. Thordin also did a small side business making barrels to age his attempts at making his own alcohol. Cornwall was no master brewer and Thordin was no master barrel maker. But both managed to get by decently. Crossing paths so frequently meant they became friends, whether they meant to or not. And that was fine.

You have the "character" and "player" columns swapped for at least one row.

An interesting premise... Can you tell us more about yourself? How long have you been at this? And where did the idea for this campaign come from?

Nota problem at all. I’ve been involved in TTRPG’s, and D&D specifically for a long time now, originally back in the days of 2nd Edition but I’m a long time follower of the game. Most of that time has been spent DM’ing than playing, as it just seems to be my role in all honesty. I have a habit and tendency to run games that I try to be unique and different from the norm, they end up being quite cerebral in nature.

I don’t really like to run solely combat focussed games as I feel that they are more suited to IRL tabletop play than PbP, so the games I run tend to be more about the mystery and focus on the investigative and world building aspects that PbP is more suited for (in my opinion at least).

This is an adventure of my own creation, it’s a concept that has actually been kicking around in my mind for a few years now in one form or another until I recently nailed down the idea for definite when playing a live Call of Cthulhu game (of all things). I don’t expect this to be a massively long game in all honesty, in that I want to wrap it up inside a year or two at most, which I think is an achievable goal. I don’t want to take on something that’s too large or too bloated because I don’t want it to lose momentum or overstay it’s welcome.
