Order of the Helping Hand

Game NameOrder of the Helping Hand
Game SystemDnD 5e
ThemeAdventurer Guild for Those who Want to Help
FlavourEpisodic Adventures with a Focus on Helping the Less Fortunate
Plot Summary
Helpers Wanted:
Join the Order of the Helping Hand Today!

You, a fresh faced adventurer, brimming full of potential, pause for a moment as a poster catches your eye, You've only just begun your story, still on your first venture out into the world, still unsure about what lies next for you, but excited to be there already. The uncertainty as to your next steps, however, that can be crippling. Perhaps that's why this poster caught your eye. A sign, a direction, something to compel you forward. You move in closer to the poster, reading the details while refraining from pulling it down off the wall. That would be rude, you figure. Others might want to read of it as well.

The poster tells of a small Adventurer's Guild, new, freshly sprung up with an idea to always be a helping hand to those in need. What started as a small party going out of their way to help others has begun to grow into a movement, and it looks like you've got the chance to join in while the joining is good. Thankful for some guidance as to your next steps, you take note of the address and begin to make your way to the guild house, eager to submit your application and join.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Welcome one and all to the Order of the Helping Hand. We're here to help. You, brand new adventurers, will be starting at level one, and progressing through as far as you're willing to go. The game will be episodic, with chapters separating each adventure from one another. However, your actions will still affect the world as a whole, so there still might be overlapping rewards and/or consequences for your actions. Only time will tell.
I am currently looking for four to six players, though that may change depending on player interest and how difficult you make the decision making process for me. I prefer we stick with the 2014 rules, just because I know them better, and I'm open to all official material for that. Posting rate will be 1-2 times a week, with ideally faster posting rates around combat scenarios. I will be providing feedback upon request, and the new deadline for applications will be February 9th at 23 59 EST. No race or class restrictions, but no evil characters please. We'll be using the point buy system. Please be sure to ask if you have any further questions!
Character DescriptionZentha is a young elf, she has a thin frame and she stands 5'4" in height. The elf has long wavy brown hair and almond brown eyes. She wears a set of leather armor, she has a short bow hanging over her left shoulder and a hand axe tied to a belt around her waist. Although she is polite, she is reserved and quiet around people that are not Elves. She knows the trade language and Elven.
BackgroundZentha was born and raised in the Elven tree village of Yadell. Her clan protected the grove and the animals living within. The young elf was trained in cooking and mixing various salves and medicines from plants growing around their homes. Her home was destroyed and her family lost when a group of human mages accompanied by Orcs swarmed and overwhelmed the area. Zentha had been struck and fell into a briar patch during the battle, she was unconscious when a group of high elf rangers discovered her. They brought her to the current location where she was taken care of. Since she is at the age of adulthood according to Elven society, the rangers left he behind to find her own way, though the local clergy were able to translate the fate of her clan.
I'm not fully familiar with the 2014 rules or 5E but have been playing various versions of D&D & Pathfinder for years now. Since I often like to play clerics what world is this & with which Pantheon?
Holly
right-aligned image
Name: Holly Spencer
Age: 18
Class: Wizard
Race: Human
Character Description: Holly Spencer is the daughter of a rich merchant (one half of the Fortnum & Spencer trading company), and hence was raised in relative privilege. Her father was more interested in sharing his business with his sons, with Holly expected to be "married off" to help strengthen family ties amongst the rising mercantile class.
But Holly had other ideas.
Intelligent and persuasive, she convinced her father to let her go to the Brighthorn Tower School (he thought it was a finishing school, not an academy of magic!). There, she proved to be a diligent and studious apprentice. She really has read every book in the library. Holly also has an insatiable curiosity, and a wizarding school is full of unsolved mysteries. Holly found these irresistible and got into trouble many times, slightly marring her academic record. But she is a skillful spellcaster and has now graduated.
Holly now sets off into the wider world. As soon as she saw the advert for the Order of the Helping Hand, she decided to join. It seems like the perfect way to offer her magical powers in exchange for exciting adventures...
Trait 1: I’ve read every book in the library!
Trait 2: There’s nothing I like more than a good mystery.
Ideal: The goal of a life of study is self-improvement.
Bond: I work to preserve a school of magic.
Flaw: I am easily distracted by the promise of information.
Background: Sage
No worries, I'll walk you through anything that you're curious about. We'll be using the world and pantheon of the Forgotten Realms. Let me know if you need any help with figuring that out!
Name: Guthrin "Gruff" Coldstone
Age: 45
Class: Rogue
Race: Mtn Dwarf
Character Description: Gruff has always seemed to be followed by a dark cloud... No matter the situation, he always seems to be down on his luck. He "has" money, well he can *get* money, at least enough to cover his head for the night and put food in his belly. But constantly having to scrape by has aged the Dwarf more than the few decades of life he has seen. Having the idea to join an Adventuring Guild, Gruff seems to think that it will somehow solve all of his problems. It will give him a place to call home, and the chance to help others (while helping himself at the same time) It always seemed like the perfect option for the Dwarf. So seeing his opportunity literally posted in front of his face, he is eager to try and capitalize on making a name (and potentially a home) for himself.
Custom Background
Trait #1
The BEST way to get me to do something is tell me I can't do it
Trait #2
I am always absentmindedly picking things up; fiddling with them, and sometimes, accidentally breaking them
Ideal
It is each person's responsibility to make the most happiness for the world
Bond
I have a Family, somewhere... One day I hope to meet them!
Flaw
I'm too greedy for my own good, I can't resist taking a risk for the potential payoff
Slight change to Gruff... I picked the wrong subrace, so he's gone from Hill to Mtn Dwarf.
Name: Willie Folker
Age: 34
Class: Artificer
Race: rock Gnome
Character Description:A red haired gnome, and the hair is everywhere, from a bush mustache that protrudes from under his bulbous nose to a beard that looks like it is trying to keep up while spreading simultaneously in every direction. His hair has been mistaken for a bird's nest by birds who apparently became suddenly alert for rivals to their mating plans.
Background: Guild artisan
Personaility Traits: "I didn't choose my name and it's not funny!"- chip on his shoulder, very focused on doing the right thing, less in terms of morality (though he does that too) but in terms of offering a hot beverage when someone is upset.
Ideal: Do good work, behave properly, and everything should go well.
Bond: He feels betrayed by his family and his guild, but surely his clan will have his back
Flaw: Quick to anger and sensitive about his name
BackstoryWillie was born to a pair of loving Gnome parent who had settled down for their lives in a human city, and named him to blend in, without quite understanding the nuances of common. He was teased growing up which wasn't too bad as he spent a lot of his time around other gnomes and mostly his parents. It was when he was sent to another clockmaker, a human clockmaker, for his apprenticeship that things really went wrong. His Master teased him. His master's wife teased him. the kids were horrid. the customers were nearly as bad. He stuck it through gritted his teeth and finished his apprenticeship. He gained the rank of journeyman and then told the guild where to stick it and went off to join the Order of the Helping Hand. certainly such a benevolent organization is not going to be so small minded and cruel.
So I'm thinking a Cleric of Sune from Waterdeep. Have some rough ideas for him in mind and when I can get back on line later from my home pc will flesh it out a bit.
Born-again Rogue
right-aligned image
Name: Ardal Jessix
Age: 19
Class: Planning to go HexbladeWarlock
Race: Human (variant)
Background: Trait 1: It's not so much that I am brave, more that I just can't get my head around the idea that someone would really want to hurt me.
Trait 1: I almost never use anyone’s real name, instead everyone gets adorable nicknames.
Ideal: Hedonism. Pleasure is by its very nature good.
Bond: Every night I relive all of the harm that I have caused. I must redress the balance.
Flaw: Vanity? I mean look at me! If anything I should probably love myself way more than I do.
Criminal
Character Description:
Darling of chance, breaker of hearts, and thief of opportunity; saying that Ardal's youth had been misspent would be somewhat underselling it. Although he had so far avoided any particularly nasty confrontations with the law, his trajectory has been very much taking him in the wrong direction, and an unbiased observer would be forgiven for predicting that his criminal record couldn't remain unblemished for much longer. And yet his parents could not be more proud, writing off each misadventure as youthful hijinks or simple folly.
"He's such a good boy," they would say, "he just gets a bit carried away sometimes."
Indeed, recently he was carried all the way in to the private chambers of one Baron Ragback; a gentleman who, it has been said, 'sifts his own feces after he licks a silver spoon.' Never a man to willingly part company with even the dullest of coppers, the Baron lived alone on the top floor of a tower, the lower floors all taken up by his tenants, each of whom, until recently, would have happily pissed on their landlord's grave. His apartments were strewn with all manner of items, with narrow trails winding between piles of assorted detritus featuring broken-stringed lyres, incomplete dragon chess sets, threadbare bolts of exotic cloths, and even the odd gem here and there.
How Ardal had gained entrance to such a trove is of no consequence, but what happened there will stay with him forever. Ragsback, upon catching his young guest slipping a small silver filigree mirror into his pocket, roared and pulled a glittering sword from seemingly nowhere.
"THIEF!" he yelled, nostrils flaring with outrage. "I KNEW IT! YOU SHALL FEEL MY PAIN!"
Ardal, who was no slouch as a swordsman and had thirty years and eighty pounds the better of his opponent, drew his own sword nonchalantly.
"You don't want to do this," he said, feeling that this was obvious but should really be said.
Unfortunately the Baron was beyond sense, and lunged forward leaving his entire ample belly unprotected. Ardal sidestepped, whipping his sword up in front of his face as he spun around, and then brought it down quickly to swipe into Ragsback's…
Everything went black for a second and Ardal found himself reclining on a pile of old books. What had happened? He pulled a copy of 'The Elderberry Press, volume 2' off of his head and threw it aside, finding as he clambered to his feet that the Baron hadn't moved from his position halfway across the room.
"IS THAT ALL YOU'VE GOT?" the man bellowed. "I THOUGHT YOU WERE GOING TO FIGHT, NOT DANCE!"
"I must have slipped," Ardal ventured, trying to recompose himself. "Now, you should probably take this opportunity to…"
But with a warcry which sounded like a hoarse donkey in fear of its life, the Baron once again attacked, and once again Ardal's deft footwork, which had up to that day never failed him, did little to shield him from the assault, and he found himself sprawled on top of a golden bowl filled with odd mosaic tiles, assorted beads and shells, and an articulated skeleton of a fish.
"Perhaps we ought to talk about this," Ardal offered as he climbed back to his feet. "You see it was all just…"
"FIGHT ME!" Ragsback interrupted. "COME ON! FIGHT!"
Ardal, starting to worry that he was perhaps playing into some kind of deranged fantasy for the man, slid his sword back into its scabbard and waved his hands in what he hoped was a calming manner.
"Wait! Wait… just… I don't want to fight you. Please. Look, I have put the mirror back, okay? No harm done. Let's be friends."
This offer, though generous, was met by yet another rush, and once again Ardal found himself picking himself up and brushing various pieces of junk from his clothing.
"YOU CAN'T BEAT ME!" the Baron roared with a wild smile. "NOT WHILE I HOLD THIS!" He brandished the sword in front of himself so that it twinkled in the light, and Ardal noticed for the first time that it really did seem to be exceptionally well-made. "THIS…this is my greatest treasure." Ragsback said, seeming to calm down as he admired the blade. "Nothing else in this tower even comes close. It is unique, special. Magical."
And the way that he said it, Ardal knew that he meant it. It wasn't 'magical' in some rhetorical sense, it was magical! An actual arcane artifact. A weapon of power. It had to be worth a fortune! Ardal's palms itched at the thought.
"Look, you win, alright? You beat me, I admit it. Now, can we just, maybe, forget about all of that and I will go and get us some wine? Maybe… maybe a nice meal from Alfhera? She makes a delicious stew. What do you think? Hungry?"
Of course he had agreed, and Ardal had been as good as his word, providing a meal fit for true royalty. Then, when the wine did its job and the Baron fell into a deep, deep sleep, he slipped out of the building with the sword slung under his cloak and a smile on his lips. And up above Baron Ragsback smiled too, even in his sleep. A sleep better and deeper than he had in many, many years.
That was when the dreams had started. Every time that Ardal had pocketed some bauble, or swindled a little bit of silver, or even just broke a promise to another swooning (former) maiden, he would dream about them. He would feel the heartbreak and experience the losses as though they were his own. And it happened every… single… night. Soon the lack of sleep was even affecting his complexion! He had to do something about it, and the only thing which seemed to work was good deeds.
Clemater (The Sword): Fashioned of bluish steel with a long, straight blade which features subtle engravings of rope which sparkle in many colours when it catches the light just right. The pommel, which is wrought in the form of two clasped hands, and the crossguard, which bulges in the middle of each arm, are made of a slightly darker metal and finished in a rougher manner.
Dathyn
right-aligned image
Name: Dathyn
Age: 20
Class: Cleric (Life Domain)
Race: Human
Background: Acolyte
Description:
Dathyn is on the small side being only about five foot six and of a thin build. What he lacks in physical power though he makes up in force of personality and natural good looks. His pale complexion is complimented by light red hair and icy blue eyes that always seem to shine with mirth. It is rare for him to be without a smile and his optimism seems to always shine through no matter how dire the circumstances.
History:
As an infant Dathyn was found on the steps of the Temple of Beauty in Waterdeep. The priests and priestesses of the time marveled at the boy for his obvious good looks but also at how happy and outgoing of a child he seemed to be. They decided to adopt him and raise him there in the temple along with the families of the clerics on staff. One in particular, a priest by the name of Tomas, took up the task of caring for the boy who in turn grew up into an equally happy and attractive young man in due time, all the while surrounded by the teachings of Lady Firehair.
He had the proper temperament and ability to become a member of the clergy himself so that was what he did when he came of age. He has never forgotten how he was rescued by the church in general and Tomas in particular. The best way to honor that he came to think was being being charitable in kind, helping others as he too had been helped. What better way he reasons to show love for all mankind than to show charity to those in need?
Personality:
He is wise for his age but being still being a young man of 20 years has some ways to go in that regard. Dathyn is still a bit flighty at times and his idealism can get in the way of common sense every so often. He always sees hidden meanings in everything as he hasn't quite learned that somethings simply exist without any grand divine design behind them. One day though, with some real life experience and a few more years under his belt, he could become quite a wise and formidable cleric.
Trait 1: I see omens in every event and action. The gods try to speak to us, we just need to listen.
Trait 2: Nothing can shake my optimistic attitude
Ideal: Charity. I always try to help those in need, no matter what the personal cost. (Good)
Bond: I owe my life to the priest who took me in when my parents died.
Flaw: Once I pick a goal, I become obsessed with it to the detriment of everything else in my life.
Ability Scores: Intelligence, Wisdom, Charisma
Feat: Magic Initiate (Cleric)
Skill Proficiencies: Insight and Religion
Tool Proficiencies: Calligrapher's Supplies
Equipment: Calligrapher's Supplies, Book (prayers), Holy Symbol, Parchment (10 sheets), Robe, 8 GP
Mace, Scale mail, Light Crossbow with 20 bolts, Shield & Holy symbol, Priests Pack (Includes a backpack, a blanket, 10 candles, a tinderbox, an alms box, 2 blocks of incense, a censer, vestments, 2 days of rations, and a waterskin.)
Character name: Rain Ragnius
Race: reborn
Age:17
Class: undead warlock
Background: Noble
Alignment: Lawful Good
Personality Traits: I always try to do the right thing, even if I don’t always know what that is.
I try to see the good in people
Ideal: If everyone performed one act of kindness each day, the world would be a much better place.
Bond: My father was a great man and I seek to live up to his name
Flaw: I am very timid
Personality: Rain is shy and unsure of himself due to the lack of encouragement he received from his mother and the severe bullying he endured at the hands of his peers, but he has a good heart and is well spoken and well educated. He always wants to do the right thing and be a good person, though he doesn’t always know how. He is terrified of the entity that dwells within him and what he is becoming.
Physical Description: Rain is a short young man with shoulder length straight golden hair. He looks even younger than he is and has often been described as looking like a lost puppy. He takes pride in his appearance, always wearing fine clothing that reflects his refined upbringing. When he transforms, he takes on the appearance of a ghostly undead king.
Backstory: Born into the noble Ragnius family as the son of the renowned wizard Marko Ragnuis, Rain’s father committed suicide the night he was born. This scandal damaged his mother’s reputation, but Lady Lucia was not some trophy wife. She was cold, intelligent, and vicious. The frequency of her rivals having their lives destroyed or disappearing entirely earned her the nickname, the villainess. Through her cunning navigation of the king’s court, she held on to her prestigious position. Unfortunately for Rain, she put no such effort into his upbringing.
Not once did she tell her son she loved him. Not once did she embrace him. She left her servants to raise him and showed little interest in his well-being. As a result, Rain grew up with deep insecurities and a lack of confidence which singled him out among the ruthless world of affluent children he was surrounded by, but none were worse than the children of the Rand family, Miguel, Liguel, and Castor. The three siblings always sought Rain out and brutally tormented him in ever-escalating attacks for years on end. Then one day on Rain’s twentieth birthday, the brotehrs Miguel and Caster ambushed Rain and kidnapped him. Rain found himself tied down on a floor with a magic circle drawn beneath him. Miguel, Castor, and their father Escaldos were standing around him attempting to perform a demonic ritual. When Escaldos moved to stab a dagger through Rains’ heart, something happened.
Rain felt a cold chill run through him, and he spoke words that were not his with a voice that was not his. “You shall not harm my precious vessel.” His chains were broken, and he felt something compelling his body to move. He lashed out with green magical power, killing the three men. With the casters killed, the magic of the ritual went wild and destroyed the tower that Rain had been held in. He survived the incident though most of those present in the tower were killed.
The investigation that followed led to the destruction and imprisonment of most of the Rand family with one very unexpected exception. Lady Lucia petitioned the king to allow her to take Liguel Rand into her family. Not only that, but she proposed an arranged marriage between the only daughter of the Rand family and her own son, Rain.
She did this for two reasons. First, it would allow her to gain control of the Rand estate and fortune which was considerable, and second, Rain’s part in the events had made him the center of the court’s attention. There were many young maidens flirting with him, and his mother did not like this one bit. She saw these girls as vultures trying to worm their way into her family. By marrying her son to Liguel, a girl with no power, Lady Lucia would maintain control over her house and its future. There was just one problem, Rain wanted nothing to do with it.
For the first time in his life, Rain confronted his mother. He was incensed at her callous disregard for his feelings. He asked how she could do this to him, to not only take the woman who tormented him under her roof but to force him to spend the rest of his life with her, especially after her family had tried to kill him. His mother dismissed his outrage as childish which only angered him further. He demanded to know why his mother didn’t love him and, having an epiphany, asked her what she knew about what had happened to him. His mother revealed that Rain had been born stillborn. His father had been unable to accept it and took him into his study for several hours. During this time a massive storm formed out of nowhere. Then, she heard the sound of a baby crying from the room. When she looked inside, she found his father dead, having cut his wrists and drawn a magic circle on the floor in his blood, and there in the center of it was Rain, inexplicably alive.
Faced with the horrifying revelation about his own existence and unwilling to marry the woman who had tormented him most of his life, Rain did what many neglected youths do, he ran away from home. Now he wanders aimlessly, struggling just to survive while trying to uncover the nature of the being that inhabits him.
To seek answers, and a means to support himself, Rain became an adventurer. It seemed an obvious choice, where else would one find such a collection of worldly individuals knowledgeable in obscure lore? Sadly Rain has yet to find his answers, but at least he’s free.
