DescriptionNocturne is a tanned bald man who is above average in height of a male of his age. His frame is wiry with lean muscles. His notable features are his gaunt face, centered around his fierce slit-like eyes that holds unyielding fire and wrinkled mouth set in a serious line. In ceremonial garbs of a bone helmet, furs and skirt and white warpaint that covers his upper face, those articles and make-up make him larger and imposing.


PersonalityHaving lost everything he holds dear to Talingarde, Nocturne turns to vengeance and is consumed by his desire to paint Talingarde with the blood of Sir Balin and her rulers. After that, he will move on to destroy Mitra for usurping the faiths of the lands as their sole worship and corrupting generations of her inhabitants into his enforcers and fanatics. He welcomes like-minded allies in his crusade to topple this two-faced holy empire and its patron god. "United we stand, divided we fall" is the motto he embraces. Alone, Nocturne knows the "forces of good" can fell him quite easy. Together, there is a chance to make a difference even succeeding in the fulfillment of his goal. And allies are beneficial to keeping him focused on his sole objective and ground him to it in the event he goes astray.

They also make good bedfellows to share the weight of his revenge mission with. Other than allies, he falls into the mindset of careful, paranoid planner and executioner; always needing prepare contingencies against his enemies and continuously gathering resources to break down the fortress and kill his targets who will adapt to him. He is book dumb. He does not adapt well to regimented learning. He expresses his intelligence through a mix of social and tactile learning. Outside of his ambition, workaholic lifestyle and survivor mode, he has little life. He is usually no-nonsense in his interactions, has no interest in his tribe's customs and has little time for trivialities except for spending time idly appreciate the temporary peace he earned with his allies, cherishing the little time they have and memories they made before going back to his work.


BackgroundBefore House Barca and House Darius warred against each other, before the founding of Talingarde through colonization, the Burning Skull tribe was a fixture where the city stood and one of the dominant tribes with the most territories. Their fearsome shamans swept the fields with their powerful spirit magic against foes that dared challenge the clan, defeating them with flawless victories. The tribe was invincible until they faced the colonizers who used their heroes subdued the tribe on their behalf. They killed most of the tribe's shamans to take away the bulk of their power, took away their lands, took away their sovereignty. The tribe's only means of survival is submission to their conquerors. They chose to sacrifice their dignity. The Burning Skull tribe of the present day was a dying fragment of its former self, withered down to Nocturne and his parents.

Inquisitors of Mitra hunted the rest down for heretical and blasphemous activities against their god, treason for attempted assault on the royal family and witchcraft. The purges spanned generations and took a lot of time due the Burning Skull's secrecy and not attacking openly from their discontent for their treatment as second-class citizens and transgenerational hatred towards their oppression transferred from parent to progeny. Nocturne seemed content with what he has and the status quo. He did not care about the cycle of hatred and revenge to continue it no matter how much his parent drilled their glory and traditions of their tribe into his mind. He cared about family. As long as his family live, Nocturne puts his mind to becoming an upstanding citizen of Talingarde.

That was despite learned prejudice against his people. His only obstacle: Dunland, a child from a minor noble family who harassed the inferior and he targeted tribe descendant. The beginning was tough. Nocturne bore the punishments to keep his head low until he studied the patterns to adapt to Dunland's antics which was avoiding meeting him. The action angered the aristocrat that prompted retaliation that led to a retribution that caused his death. Just when things started looking up to him, Dunland outed Nocturne's parents for practicing witchcraft in secret involving ritual sacrifice. The enforcers from the Church of Mitra apprehended them, sentenced them to Branderscar Prison for execution. Nocturne tried to rescue them and failed. The day came. Mithrans tied them to a post. He watched as the flames burned his family to ashes.

Nocturne could not forget the triumphant smile from his harasser as he mourned. He wanted to tear the smile from that face, so he let loose every restraint, plotting Dunland's murder. He found the opportune time to corner the pompous brat who was fed with a golden spoon in an alleyway alone, used magic his parents ingrained to him against his will to prevent the terrified Dunland from escaping or shouting out for help and slitted his throat after in which he stabbed ten times before dropping the body into a hole full of rats that fed on the noble child. Needless to say, the noble family took the murder as an affront when they found their child's half eaten corpse the next day. They used their connections to contact Sir Balin to hunt down the despicable mage. The fighter slash investigator tracked Nocturne down with ease. A battle erupted though a short one.

Nocturne managed to kill one of Balin's men before Balin intervened. The knight knocked him down and clapped irons on his wrist. Once Balin had his men propped Nocturne into sitting position, declared the shaman guilty for the murder of one Dunland Sokaris, and asked for his response, Nocturne spitted at Balin's face. Balin personally hauled him to Branderscar Prison and dumped him into the hellhole to be slated for beheading. As darkness creeped closer, Nocturne wondered if he had a chance to enact revenge on Sir Balin and the rulers of Talingarde after a deep reflection on how unfair and corrupted the system and people of this current era are.

I have re-read all applications that have been altered due to review comments.

I am very happy with what everyone has done. There are a few that need to be completed. At this point I think everyone who is "complete" is at a good point.

  • May I use Spheres of Power or Path of War? No.
  • May I play any other third party material? To be assessed on a case by case scenario. Sell me on your concept. If I buy the character idea and accept you into the game, then we can discuss the mechanics and why you think it can only be brought to life using this specific 3rd party material.
  • May I use prestige classes? Yes. Qualify as normal. If their is a conflict in the rules because of gestalt, we'll discuss how to correct.
  • May I use a god other than Asmodeus? It is possible, but narratively difficult. The core of the game is signing a contract with Asmodeus and serving him. Evil gods usually aren't good at sharing.
  • How are Animal Companions or Familiars handled? Handled on a case by case basis. You likely will not have immediate access to them due to being in prison unless you have a special ability to get around this. If they aren't smart enough to know how to hide and come when summoned, then its possible they were killed during your arrest and will need to be replaced. Again, we will assess on a case by case basis. There will be plenty of cool creatures to try and tame if that is your thing.
  • May I have multiple animal companions? I would tentatively say yes. You will eventually have your own armies of henchmen. I don't see having one extra wolf or one extra bear will be a big issues. That said, you will need to be intelligent on how you use them. The reason huge animals usually aren't allowed is because they rarely fit inside buildings.
    What is the deal with the free feats? Players selected to play will be allowed [1] free general feat or racial feat that helps flesh out their character based on their history, story, and role. For example, if you write a story where you're a great swimmer and strong climber, you'll get Athletic for free. At level 7, all players will receive the "Leadership" feat free, though it won't work as per written. Details to come when we reach that stage.
