2008 Treeplanting Post 2010 Treeplanting Post Alright everyone, this is a one month notice. I am heading treeplanting again this summer. Basically, this involves picking up ~300 small trees (about the size two highlighters), digging a hole (more like a 1 inch slit 3 inches long) and the putting the tree in, kicking the hole shut. You work 10 hour days, 4 days in 5, and travel all over Northern Canada (Australia and Scotland both have moderate treeplanting industries as well). You live in tent-camps and are paid 10-25 cents per tree, planting 1000-3500 trees per day (with the fastest of planters planting even more). It can be brutally hot, cold, and backbreaking, but ultimately is good money. This season, my 4th, I'll be planting for a company called Folklore. I'll be out roughly from April 29th to the first week of August. Last year I attempted to continue checking DNDOG on my days off, but found that to be impractical and ineffective. Some of you might be wondering why I joined several games over the Christmas season. At that point I was investigating a job offer in my home city. It has recently fallen through. So in a months time, you'll need to find a replacement, or work me out of the plotline for a while. Fear not, however, as I will be back in August (and planning to start running two new games then). I'll answer questions here, or anywhere else that I notice them.

Having never gamed with you before, I would like to take the opportunity to express interest in the Westmarches Sandbox game. Hopefully I can remember to apply when the time comes.
Have fun planting trees!

Hah, thanks. It's kinda fun to write up dungeons with no concern for EL or party power and just be like "well, if you stumbled into it, too bad." Beats stressing about encounters that may end up killing my party like I have to do in my RL campaign.
Hopefully you'll enjoy it (if you do apply and get in).

Wow, this is quite interesting. Makes me want to plant trees as well, especially as a means to lower my blood sugar. As for the games, I will definitely have to check back in to keep up-to-date on when they open up.

Is this the thread advertised for pretending?
Just looking around here having been redirected from SNOT:WWAD, complements of Dean Axeman. I haven't gamed with you, but have enjoyed reading some of your posts. Hopefully in August I'll remember to look for your game announcements. My niece is excited about tree planting this spring/summer, her first time. Any good tips I can pass along?

"Keep cool". Be patient. Those are the hardest parts; because the first while, everyone sucks. My first 2 weeks I made no more than 75$/day for hard 10 hour days. Then it starts getting better. Remind her that Canadian law dictates that you get paid minimum wage even if comission doesn't add up to that during the first pay period. (If she's doing it in Australia/Scotland/elsewhere, nevermind).
@GT: I know some diabetics that plant, but they usually have to be careful about keeping blood sugar high enough. Very careful. This advertising thread is just for drumming up future interest and to fuel my own excitement as I write material for the games. Though truth be told, they're basically done except the Westmarches one. It's also for people to post things where I have oversights, or that I may have missed, or not thought about in the above "game descriptions".

Thanks for the tips, I'll pass 'em on. Good luck with your planting season.
The chess PvP sounds pretty intriguing. Reminds me of Archon, if anyone remembers that game. Did the original thread with Le Renard spawn a game? It does sound very complex though, keeping track of everything going on. I'd almost suggest that the game doesn't move while two pieces are in combat -- let them duke it out and everyone else can be entertained -- or the DM could easily end up with 8 simultaneous fights going on. Also I wonder at the ability for any player to move a pawn instead ... some crafty players might do everything they can to engage the pawns first, even to the detriment of other players on their team. A clarification on initiative ... does this mean moves not alternate white/black?

I think it'll be initiative for teams in order, alternating. So 1st white, 1st black, 2nd white, 2nd black, etc.
Good call on catching that. Le Renard didn't spawn a game, he decided to do other projects. As for people trying to get the pawns engaged first so they can get past to hit the king; yeah, that's totally within the realm of possibility. Which means people will have to carefully think about what character they make the king and where to put blocking pieces.

Very Interested in the games, they all sound like fun that will require quite a lot of skill, and not just the character!
Have "Fun" Planting, I love the outdoors, but do not envy you, I could never do tree planing for an entire summer. Even back when I was young and in better shape, just way to tall to be bending over all day! Did do it on a volunteer basis for a few weekends, that is HARD WORK! Glad you know what your getting into an that you enjoy it! Question on the Chest Game, would the other team know who the King was? And will movement be restricted to the movement of normal chest pieces? I didn't see that stated, but sorry if I missed it, was reading fairly fast. Wolfman

Yep; every character will take a piece and move on their turn. The only real difference is the "taking" mechanism.

I really need help with battle situations. I am pretty new to d&d but with the two local games I am in, and the two pbp games I am in on here I am trying to get in front of all of this. A lot of battle situation would be fun and a great learning tool.
Since I am new here I would like to describe my time restraints. I find myself checking this board more than 3 times a day looking for something to write. I am a 44 year old dis vet with lots of life to beef up my threads and toons. so I would be very glad happy to be in all three campaigns, but if I had to choose one it would be the first. well c-ya in August. Thanks I have a buddy who is a tree planter in N.California around the Chester area. They had to kill a bear once who had been stalking their camp. Do you know the name of the company he worked for? If he was an American citizen, I might know his boss, because only a couple planting companies in US hire Americans.
