Unfortunately, I will be away on a course next week, to get my certification for a piece of software I'm never going to use.
Our company recently started using a new environment to host our servers, and two of my colleagues have been busy the past few months setting up said environment. I am tangentially related to said environment, because I perform back-up and restore procedures for our servers. That is my only involvement with the subject matter, so obviously I have to do the same course as my two colleagues. I have zero chance of actually passing the exam (it is widely accepted that the course does not prepare you for the exam, you need actual years of experience), and still I'm going to go get up at 6:00, follow a nine hour lecture on something I do not understand, and then get home at 20:00, earliest, for four days straight. Wish me luck ! |

In the organization I work for, somebody with a higher pay grade than I have decided that our on-prem SQL Server environment needed to be replaced by migrating to the cloud. Even though our current environment and setup works - we use SSIS packages to load into SQL Server, and I am the automation jockey on the team - it was decided to move to Azure Data Factory...and connect to Snowflake. Yeah, you read that right. Snowflake. So where are we at with this? Well, 6 months on and we haven't even connected to Snowflake through ADF yet. Why? Because they made the whole process so convoluted that I have to deal with 5 different teams for 3 different environments (DEV, STG, PRD) to get access simply for our service account, and we have multiple Service Now/Help Desk tickets open because the environment keeps disabling the service account's access for an unknown reason. SQL Server wasn't broke, so of course they had to fix it. |

@DemonSlayer, krossingkhory: There! Clear proof that Dragonlance tinker gnomes exist - and have high positions in IT management. By the way, you don't want to know what happens in the healthcare sector...

I already know about the healthcare sector; I work for one of the largest insurance companies in America.

One of the earliest projects I did here was to develop an app which allowed students to look up their schedule and test results. Took a while to get it up and running, but it worked great, students loved it. So obviously management decided we had to scrap the whole thing and switch to a 3rd party app, which took forever to implement properly. All because our boss "did not want to spend money on us doing maintenance for our own technology". So instead we're spending ten times that much money on license fees! (also, the switch was prompted by teachers complaining that their students did not see their new schedules in the app when a new term began... Which we discovered, after some digging, happened only when the schedule makers hadn't uploaded the new schedule yet ) Last edited by DemonSlayer; Nov 13th, 2024 at 07:24 AM. |

Take care feel better N. Also enjoying the work decision to “fix” things that are not broken posts, they are amusing.

It is cyclical, really. Today, management will moan at how horrible and wretched our current technology is, and sing the praises of the next big technology, and demand we replace our current product with the new.
Tomorrow, they will condemn that new product to the fiery pits of hell, and support another, newer thing. And thus the cycle continues, ever onward. Which is honestly a good thing, because it means we'll never run out of work! I'm just waiting for the day we loop back around to DOS. |

Man that was a bad crit roll @Krossingkhory. Upside is the crit also doubled the thunder damage, so you actually hit for 11, not 9.
Waiting on Demonslayer, then I'll get an update up.
