"You must be eagles and more to hunt Thalorgarax. But do not mistake me for a hare." casting Mind Spike at UngaluShe muttered a few words, ancient and perplexing, fixed her gaze one last time at Ungalu, then turned her back towards him.

"Seeing wisdom in the clan's young is a promising sign," she said, offering a small, grandmotherly smile to Uthal and a look of approval to Kaugu. Lothu slipped a silver ring from her finger and held it, palm up, to the burly smith. Inlaid within was a central band of gently glittering stone. "This ring will mark you and those in your company as a friend of the Skyreach clan. Now, good luck, all of you."

Lothu turned and left the room, silence trailing behind her. Eventually, Aurok roused himself to answer Uthal's question. "Expect it to be far colder than it is here. I trust you have traveling furs?" he asked, looking at the two Iceheart clan heroes. "The icevein we will take opens near Thalvryn, one of the rivers that feeds the Crystalline Lake. The ice that holds it should be breaking by now, and the water beneath flowing clearly. As for dangers? Giants, wolves, and ice snakes are sometimes seen around our village, though they usually stay clear of our patrols. Roaming Frostfang are another matter, but that's why you're coming with me. Once we are in sight of Crystal Waters, we should be safe."

"It's time," Kalane announced once Aurok signalled he was finished speaking. She gestured to two of the Iceheart tribesmen standing near the door, and they left the room. Uthal recognized them as Korrick and Thalorn, both crafters in their own right.

Nikia placed a parcel on the table and began pulling items from it. "From our healers at Haven." She handed each of the five heroes a leatherbound, stoppered flask. "And the Mantle of Shadow," she added, removing a short, folded cloak darker than any night the collected goliaths had experienced. "May Nemoris hide your steps," she added, then handed the cloak to Ungalu, her parcel now empty.

Kalane was next, and like Lothu, she wore her gifts on her body. Her hands unlaced a pair of leather bracers and slid them from her wrist. "Wear these with pride, Galmath, and let our peoples' fury fuel you." Looking closer, the bracers are decorated by runes that appear the color of blood soaked into leather. Then the Frostwalker Chieftain grunted and looked at Gramak expectantly.

The Stormwatcher chieftain growled, then tossed open the fur-covered box his warriors had carried from Thunder Peak. "You won't so much as scratch the Frostreaper's hide without these." He pulled forth two weapons. First, a warhammer that sparked with energy at his touch. This he held out to Uthal. Second, with more effort, he removed a terrible-looking greataxe with a blade of obsidian and runes carved down the haft. Anyone who had held such a weapon before would recognize that he was actively hiding how much effort it took to balance it in one hand. This second weapon he proffered to Galmath.

Finally, the two Iceheart craftsmen returned. Between them, they hauled a massive set of iron and stone armor. It had suffered through a cave-in, but somebody had polished it, cleaning away a hundred scuff marks and fixing dozens of dents. Kaugu looked at Uthal expectantly. "I can think of no one better to wear Kaelith's Aegis."

The collected chieftains finished equipping the two heroes from Crystal Waters, and the meeting adjourned. "I'll see you at Skyreach," Kalane said to the five heroes, bringing her fists together, one on top of the other, in a gesture similar in meaning to a salute. "Good luck."

Aurok joined the five after the others had departed. "Rest well tonight. It will be many days before we reach Crystal Waters. I will meet you tomorrow morning."

OOC@Elanir, Lothu made the save and your spell breaks. I'm also gonna need a DC15 wisdom save or you take 13 psychic damage from Lothu's Mind Spike. 6 damage on a success. This is the mental equivalent of you getting slapped for peaking somewhere you shouldn't have.

All of you, I'll follow up with more information on all the items you're receiving. Ran out of time this morning, but expect it in the next day or so. I'm bummed I wasn't able to add cool images to go alongside them, but man the AI tool I've been using for equipment image generation is garbage.

Holding off on giving any specific items to EMIW and Torack's characters until I see a character sheet from them.

Beyond that, wrap up this scene however you like, and let me know if you'd like to do anything in Refuge to prepare for the journey. Next post will be setting out tomorrow.

Ungalu the Darkseer
right-aligned image
Ungalu Darkseer
Ungalu’s eyes grew distant, no longer seeing what was right in front of them, but instead delving in time until memories and emotions were unearthed like the remains of some prehistoric beast. Greedily, he dug deeper still, for who could resist the lure of revealing secrets known to no one, but this time his mind hit an impenetrable barrier. The Darkseer gasped in surprise. Few were those who possessed the strength of will to resist his sight and the power of the crystals. Yet, Lothu Skyreach Agu-Vaga was clearly one of them. And she was not content to merely shield herself from the mind invading her thoughts. She was willing to fight back.

The Goliath’s vision became blurry as a throbbing pain suddenly took form in his mind, growing faster than the ice forming in the Frostreaper’s throat and threatening to split his skull in two. Drawing energy from his heartcrystal, Ungalu fortified his mind and watched with satisfaction as the ice melted and died, unable to sustain itself any longer, though not before he could taste blood in his mouth. He smiled, revealing small crimson stains on his teeth and lips. Never had he claimed that truth could be secured without sacrifice. It was a price he was always willing to pay.

"No, Lady, you are certainly not a hare", he replied to the Elder, bowing with reverence before her retreating form, hunched and wizened but still greater than everyone else present. If he had had any doubts about the Elder’s true allegiance, they were now gone. In his eyes she was a valuable ally and the information she offered would be considered in earnest when the time came.

For the rest of the meeting, the Darkseer remained silent, graciously accepting the presents of the Chieftain of the Pinewhisperers. The healing potions brewed by the members of Nikia Vunakugoni’s clan were famous for their potency, while the cloak Ungalu received managed to impress even the Darkseer. Cold and at the same time comforting to the touch, the Mantle of Shadow felt insubstantial when worn, as if it weighed little to nothing at all. More importantly, it seemed to shift when one wasn’t looking, growing larger or smaller and even able to make its owner’s shape appear different than it was. Like shadows, who were nothing more than a trick of the light, the cloak seemed to stretch reality to match its wearer’s desire and imagination.

"Chief Aurok is right. We must rest and prepare", Ungalu echoed the words of the leader of the Crystalline Keepers. "Even the journey through the Icevein will not prove uneventful. And once we reach Thalvryn…" The Darkseer paused. The truth could shine as brightly as the sun on freshly fallen snow and blind those unprepared for it. Sometimes, things should remain secret until the time came to reveal them.

"Have no fear. We will be ready. I will make sure of it."

His words had the confidence of a prophet or a madman. Perhaps, Ungalu Darkseer was a bit of both. He would have to be, if he hoped to best the Winter’s Herald.

Uthal Oretamer Iceheart
right-aligned image

'Giants?' Uthal repeats, a hint of excitement in his voice. 'I've studied giants- their language, their works of course... Their dedication to their craft is... Incredible. But I have never met one.' He pauses for a moment, and with some effort sets aside thoughts of seeking out the giants and questioning them on their methods of crafting. 'I cannot imagine them being on friendly terms with the dragon. Might they be persuaded to aid us, instead?' he asks, casting a look at the assembled goliaths. 'Not to enter the dragon's lair with us, of course... But their strength might help preserve the blood of those fighting on the front lines.'

Uthal's thoughts on securing an ally in this fight were lost, however, when Lothu presented him with her ring. He eagerly accepted the trinket, his manners forgotten at the opportunity to study an artifact of a lost tribe. 'Amazing,' he breathed, holding up the silver ring. 'Is that- yes,' he smiled, recognizing the stone which made up the band. 'Star-stone, or meteorite as some call it. Rock fallen from the cold, vast sky above. I've worked a thousand types of stone in my day, but this... Oh, this is a rare sight indeed,' he grinned. 'And look at the craftsmanship! There is nary a gap between silver and star-stone. Do you have any idea what level of skill is needed, to so seamlessly merge rock and metal? Truly, this is the work of a master,' the smith spoke, his gaze never leaving the tiny ring in his hand.

The artisan was still recovering from his awe when another treasure was presented to him. Uthal let out an audible gasp at the sight of the weapon- though weapon was too simple a term for the artifact now presented to him. 'Stormhammer!' he spoke in a loud whisper, eagerly grasping the handle and inspecting the dark steel head. 'Mearad Boltcatcher Thulatake worked on this beauty for over a year, it is said. Exiled herself, and built a smithy atop the highest mountain, so she could catch the storm itself and lock it into her design. This hammer was actually the fourth attempt- the first three had broken when lightning struck, but the fourth alloy was potent enough to keep the strength of thunder contained.' He carefully swung the weapon, sparks of electricity trailing his every swing.

But when the next treasure was unveiled, Uthal could only stand and watch in shocked silence. 'No...' he finally brought out, a reverent whisper at the sight of the suit of armour. 'This... Kaelith's Aegis!' He bent close to inspect each piece of the armour, each crafted by another great artisan of a bygone era. 'This greave!' he spoke, holding up the shaped piece of metal. 'No other than Loramuk Kalukamune worked on this. Look at its edge- its perfect curve! And the inscriptions,' Uthal laughed, beside himself with glee. 'Definitely Loramuk's work- see the slight bent to the Kho runes?' he asked of no one in particular. 'Typical of Loramuk- he was a visionary for his time. And this!' Uthal brought out, putting down the greave and holding up what appeared to be an embellished part of the shoulder guard. 'This floral pattern, engraved into the stone... It must have been Aurath Geanathai,' he spoke, reverence in his voice. 'Adding the beauty she saw in flowers, so rare to the Icehearts who dwell beneath the surface, to hard, cold stone. So generations of our kin could enjoy their beauty without ever setting foot outside our homes.'

Uthal continues to raise piece after piece, giving each only a cursory inspection before another work of legend draws his attention. When he finally managed to compose himself, he still cannot help but smile, his eyes still on the suit of armour splayed out before him. 'When the darkseer spoke of our victory, I believed. Now, knowing the masters of old watch over us, I know. We will not fail, not with these treasures on our side. Mark my words, as one who knows the worth of such things. The dragon will die, and word of our glory will travel to the far corners of the world!'

"You think of the giants in the stories of old, Uthal Oretamer." Aurok smiled as he spoke, grandfatherly. "Know that the giants that roam the land above share little with the legends. They are solitary or else travel in small bands and are little better than the Frostfangs. They have no love for the dragon or our people, and I doubt we would find in them an ally."

The heroes' departure the following morning was made with a subdued fanfare. Kalane and her warriors had departed with Nikia earlier in the day, exiting through the Iceveins on the city's southern side. Gramak and the Stormwatchers had left even earlier; their roles in this endeavor were finished for the time being. Aurok stood flanked by Palu and Tabral. Prepared for the journey, he wore a thick cloak and heavy pack. Lothu watched their exit from a stone balcony further in the city while Kaugu had a few last words for Uthal.

Iceheart Goliaths watched from either side of the entrance to the Iceveins that would eventually take them to Crystal Waters. They stood as silent witnesses; the hopes of the collected Windspire Clans walked with these few Goliath heroes. There were also whispers of dissent, suggesting that they were sending some of their most promising to their deaths on a fool's errand. Some waved. Some offered the two-fisted salute. A few provided bolstering words.

Then, the procession was behind them. Ungalu, Galmath, Uthal, Palu, Tabral, and Aurok had no sound to accompany them except the echoes of their footsteps off the ice and stone walls of the Iceveins. Their journey to slay Thalorgarax, the dragon who had been deemed Frostreaper and The Winter's Herald, had truly begun.

OOCAnd they're off! Gee, sure hope nothing bad is waiting for you guys in the Iceveins

Can I get a marching order from those present? Tunnels are usually, but not always wide enough to walk two or even three abreast.

This also marks our first group skill check! Please roll survival or another navigation-related check to help the group. @DemonSlayer, Uthal gets advantage on these checks since he grew up down here.

Galmath
left-aligned image
Morning had come earlier than Galmath had wanted it to. He had spent far more time the previous evening talking with the elders, trying to glean any information he could about their upcoming journey, and it kept him awake beyond when would have been a good time to wish the spirits a good evening. But wake he did, even against his own body's grumbling that it needed more rest, and he set off out of the cavern to join the others he would walk the Icevein with. He threw a few "goodbyes" to his clansmen as he left, knowing that he carried their hopes...and quite possibly carrying them off to his own end.

If I am to die on this quest, never let it be said that I did so unwillingly.

They began to march the Icevein, Galmath taking point on the left side, hoping to shield the Darkseer with as much of his own body as he could should the need arise. Hollow, thumping footsteps echoed off the walls on both sides, a dull thrumming in his ears to remind him that this was no pleasure cruise or vacation get-away, but rather a serious endeavor where the fate of their lives, their clans, their worlds, hung in the balance rather delicately. There was no fanfare or parade as they set out, but instead a few timid or grumbling words, etched with both hope and despair at the task to be undertaken. But if the journey would weigh upon him, he did not let it show; he kept his head held up high, the leather straps from the bracers he was gifted dangling towards his sides, the new great-axe with its shining obsidian blades hung about the straps on his back.

He kept his eyes peeled, looking all around him the best he could, what little light was provided glancing off the crystals that formed and grew from the floor and ceiling. He tried to keep his ears away from the wind, but the thrumming of their footsteps prevented him from hearing anything above and beyond that. The going was slow, the mood dour, their bodies - at least his - tired from lack of sleep. But he kept the pace moving forward, brisk and with purpose, step after step towards their final destination.

Out of CharacterSurvival Check: 14.

I did not roll the Perception check. I have the Observant feat, and my passive Perception is 20.

Ungalu the Darkseer
right-aligned image
Ungalu Darkseer
And so it began.

Under the watching eyes of his Iceheart Clan-brothers and -sisters, the chosen few - chosen by Ungalu Darkseer - entered the iceveins running beneath the massive Windspire range. No single Goliath knew all the twisting passages and the secret places they led to. Those who lived on the slopes of the mountains, among snow-covered trees and next to icy rivers and frozen lakes, thought the earth still and unmoving, dead. But they were wrong. The earth changed, just like all living things did. It shook and whispered and rose or fell like the chest of a breathing person. But it did so slowly, much too slowly for those without the patience to look for such signs. Those of the Iceheart clan knew to wait and watch. A few among them could even feel the changes as they happened.

Ungalu could. Just like Uthal did.

Tall and lanky, the craftsman looked like a walking icicle, pale grey skin contrasting the darkness of the underground passage, his striking blue eyes catching whatever light could be found in the bowels of the earth and capturing it, magnifying it in the process.

The Darkseer nodded. Yes, Uthal had been the right choice. The meeting point of tradition and innovation. He was indeed the perfect son of the Iceheart clan.

Very unlike Galmath.

The dragon-spawn had something bestial about him, something wild and ferocious. Each time Ungalu looked at him, he had to suppress the hatred and revulsion he felt to call the dragon’s progeny his companion. And yet, he too had been the right choice. Where Uthal was as much a part of the tunnels as stone, Galmath seemed capable of tearing them down with his claws. Such power could not be denied, nor could it be ignored. Not when the Clans sought to accomplish the impossible.

"Be vigilant, son of the dragon", he advised the dragonborn. "These passages seem deserted but they are not. Danger lurks in them and not all obstacles can be overcome by the strength you have inherited from your sire. I grant you the gift of light. Make good use of it."

Ungalu’s long fingers touched the gigantic greataxe Galmath carried, a weapon that seemed to be as much a part of him as the fingers of his hand or the scales covering his skin, and the weapon started glowing with a light as cold as Frostorn’s breath.

The Darkseer nodded again, his golden irises shining eerily.

"This way", he urged the others. "I hear the earth calling to us."

Uthal Oretamer Iceheart
right-aligned image

Kaugu's warning elicited a smile from Uthal- it had been entirely unnecessary. Uthal knew well the value of the suit he now wore; were his foe not so dire, he would happily have used his own body to shield the stone and iron from dents and scratches. It felt strange indeed, using so renowned an artefact to protect mere flesh. But, in the pursuit of slaying the worm- and claiming its hide and bones to fashion even greater treasures- Uthal would accept the risk.

He left with the others, sparing hardly a glance at those who had come to see them off. Instead of taking heart from their words of support, Uthal remembered Aurok's words. 'Time,' he said softly, to noone in particular. 'Time erases all. The giants were legendary crafters, artisans without peer. What they made, will be spoken of with deference for many generations to come. And yet, they themselves... Their identity is no more,' Uthal laughed bitterly. 'What will they say of us, a hundred years from now? Will we live up to our reputation, as masters of stone and ice? Or will we fall into obscurity, with naught but our treasures to remind the world of the glory we ourselves have forgotten? And what happens when our treasures, too, are lost? To time, plunderers, or the cursed worm?'

He shook his head. 'I fear that day, more than I fear death. The day the memory of us dies. The memory this worm is already trying to erase,' he added, his fists clenching at his sides. 'We cannot let the beast live, no matter the cost. For if we do not, the cost will be greater still.'

Uthal followed his companions through the dark tunnels. He was quite content to let those who knew more of such things find a way ahead. The artisan had never truly explored the caverns, not to find paths anyway. Instead, Uthal always followed the lay of the land, trying not to find a specific path, but the ores and stones which the land would guide him to. He could, however, call out warnings at times. 'Be wary,' he warned as the group rounded a bend in the tunnel, tracing his finger along the wall to reveal white crystals. 'Lots of salt in the stone. Salt makes the stones easier to break. There may be some weak spots ahead, where one wrong step might cause a rockslide.' Further ahead, he held up a hand to bid the others to be quiet. 'Listen. Hear that? The drip-drip dripping of water on stone. Could be getting near to an underground lake. And where there is water, there may be life. Living things who may consider us their food.' Further ahead again, where the tunnel darkened, Uthal's expression grew dour. 'These parts were excavated for their rich obsidian veins,' the goliath observed, his gaze finding trace amounts of the black, gleaming stone still jutting from the rock. 'Obsidian has a sharp edge to it. Be careful where your hands might touch stone. Best not to lose a finger, before we face the worm.'

Palu Icepiercer
right-aligned image

So, they were on the path back to Crystal Waters. She had thought that her road towards the Dragon had begun, but it seemed she must return to her birthplace one last time. Her tearful goodbyes to her mother and others in the village now seemed foolish, and beneath her scales her cheeks glowed blue at the memory, and anticipation of reappearing there so soon.

To hear of the net had been a great surprise - how long had her people been working on it in secret? Had her mother known, and not told her, despite Palu's new destiny? Always she was not trusted - with information, with choices. She clutched at the symbol of Lirael that hung from her neck. Finally, here inside her was proof that she was trusted by someone greater than any Clan Elder.

At the front of their travelling party the Darkseer spoke some words to Galmath, her brother, before touching his axe. It glowed brightly then, lighting the icy tunnels in which they travelled. "Oh!" she remarked. "I think I can do that too!" Placing the tips of two clawed fingers on her shield, she prayed "Lady of Reflection, grant us light." The shield began to sparkle, and the light that came from it was not that of a torch, or even of the sun, but the bright white of a snowfield at midday, a little hard to look at. She could see much better down the tunnel now, which was a great relief. Besides the tombs, the people of Crystal Waters spent much of their life outside, with the vastness of sky and lake spread out around them. These tunnels reminded her of being in that tomb, the one already prepared for her, in which her father the Dragon believed she lay still. That too had been dark, and packed with ice, and she tried not to dwell on the idea that it was now waiting for her to dwell there once more.

The inaugural day of the dragonslayers' journey was uneventful. This close to Refuge, the Iceveins were patrolled regularly to keep the Iceheart clan's gatherers safe. The tunnels surrounding their clan home contained many materials needed for everyday crafting, and skilled hunters and gatherers often brought back food to supplement their clan members' diets from these areas. Even the least-traveled of the Iceheart clan knew these tunnels relatively well.

However, it often required brave souls to venture past what was strictly known to find ores for crafting true masterworks and rarer reagents for cooking and casting. After the first night in the tunnels, this was the domain the party crossed into.

The silence of the first day was replaced by a dozen sounds, all more ominous. The drip-drip-drip of water could signal a wellspring nearby, drawing life from throughout the Iceveins or simply an icicle beginning to melt. The scuff of a boot or the scratch against the wall—was that one of the bold travelers, or something more dangerous, just out of sight? Even wind occasionally found its way this deep into the mountains, slipping through hidden crevices far above and soughing a haunting melody between the hanging ice.

Near the end of the second day, the party found themselves far below one of these fissures in the snow. The Icevein they had followed most of their day opened into a large cavern, where light filtered from high above, bouncing and reflecting off icy stalactites that hung down hundreds of feet. Rising to meet these massive hanging structures was a forest of icicle stalagmites. Some rose only a foot high, while others towered like the trees of the Whispering Pines, forming a natural, frozen maze.

The heroes found their faces mirrored back at them, warped and distorted to both comical and horrifying effects. The light from Palu's shield and Galmath's magically lit axe reflected in the towering icicles further creates a kaleidoscope of light—beautiful but obscuring the way forward.

Ungalu the Darkseer
right-aligned image
Ungalu Darkseer
Ungalu stood in silence, staring at the large chamber before him with his strange golden eyes. He had spent his whole life underground, looking for crystals growing in the belly of the earth, harvesting them, taming their power. But never before in the many days he had spent beneath the ground had he seen such a sight. It was nothing but light and frozen water, he knew, rays of sunlight passing through columns of ice, and yet they filled the room with colors and reflections in such a breathtaking manner that no mortal mind could capture the effect in its entirety. Had he been a skald, interested in words as ornate as Uthal Oretamer’s carvings in stone, wood and metal, he might have claimed that he had just discovered the definition of beauty itself.

And like all extraordinarily beautiful things, he expected the underground chamber to be dangerous.

His mind’s eye went back in time, recalling the vision the crystal had granted him - a hammer shattering ice, a narrow tunnel almost devoid of light, the bulbous eye of a creature looking back as if through an icicle. This light-flooded place looked nothing like the cramped passage he had seen, but it was full of icy stalactites and stalagmites, forming a veritable maze the small group were forced to cross if they were to reach the other side. Would they have to shatter the ice or was such a thing to be avoided at all cost? The Darkseer wasn’t sure. Seeing was not the same as comprehending and the interpretation of visions was a double edged sword, especially when one tried to foretell the future.

"Wait!", he said, raising his hand and enjoying the echo of his warning reverberating inside the chamber. "Let us not go blindly forward. Danger might be lurking within."

Offering no further explanation, he looked for a place dry and comfortable enough where he could sit cross-legged on the ground. Afterwards, he took out of his satchel two pale white, many faceted crystals resembling miniature obelisks, except they possessed a sharp tip on both ends. They appeared to be carved on all sides, though not with runes but pictographs, each one of them depicting some object or scene. Some of them were obvious, resembling a gem, a crevasse, a pool of water, others far less so. Ungalu’s fingers danced over them, his fingertips tracing the marks in the otherwise smooth surface of the crystal, before suddenly flipping the crystal and continuing their frenzied dance there.

The Darkseer closed his eyes even as he started mumbling words that made little sense, words in the language of the dragon: home, path, spear, light, quake, terror… Again and again he repeated them, sometimes changing the order he spoke them, at other times omitting some and adding others. Did his lips speak what his fingers read? It seemed likely, though he acted too fast for anyone to ascertain this by following the path of glyphs his fingers traveled. Suddenly, he stopped chanting, casting the crystals on the ground like he would have rolled a pair of dice, opening his eyes and looking at the pictographs greedily.

"Hmmm", he said, forming in the air the glyphs he was seeing with his long finger. "What does this chamber hold for us? Weal or woe? Weal. Or. Woe."

Uthal Oretamer Iceheart
right-aligned image

Uthal frowned at the glacial chamber, instinctively flexing his muscles against the cold. 'Ice,' he spoke, a strong hint of disdain in his voice. 'Frostorn's domain. Emphemeral. Fragile. Never saw much use for it,' he scowled, remembering the ice statues his clan crafted every year to honour their patron spirit of frost. An activity which the artisan declined whenever he could get away with it- carving a medium that would melt anyway was a waste of his time and talent.

But despite his sullen tone, the goliath could not hide a measure of awe at the natural beauty of the cavern. The reflected light, broken into many colours, might rob them of a clear view of what lay ahead... But it was also beautiful to look at. He wondered if this was what sunlight looked like.

He stopped at Ungalu's urging, patiently watching as the Darkseer prepared his ritual. While the elder goliath worked his magic, Uthal turned to his other companions. 'What is your take on... This?' he asked, gesturing for the light and ice ahead. 'The Darkseer reveals much. Nevertheless, I am curious how a priest of battle and the scions of snow regard our surroundings. Anything can reveal multiple truths, depending on the perspective of the onlooker.'

Galmath
left-aligned image
Galmath was not one to stay underground for too long; he preferred the feel of the cold wind on his face and the sun shining in his eyes to being contained within tunnels or darkened rooms. Yet now he found himself within the Icevein, traveling with several whom he had only just met, those who he would need to call friends in time. He shivered at the thought of what they were undertaking, hoping that they would not fail.

It had already been two days of steady traveling through the frosted tunnel, and his nerves were already about him. Hidden shadows passing from one stalactite to the other, muffled scrapes and the sounds of breathing riding on the wind. He was probably just nervous about their journey and their task, but the beast inside would not let him relax or push this feeling to the side. The inner monster needed to be heard; it needed to be seen and recognized.

At last, after 2 days of slow, cold walking did they come upon a wider cavern. Dripping of water, whistling of wind, reflections of light. He saw all of their mirror images in the ice, twisted this way and that, playing tricks upon their minds. It was as if the gods were giving them a look into their own futures, how their minds would warp as they went about their business. He stopped for but a moment when the Darkseer asked his prescient question, his eyes darting this way and that.

"We are not alone," he muttered, somewhat under his breath but loud enough to be heard. "There are shadows that move when we do not, light that shines where there should be none, sounds dampened by our own speech and breathing that should not be there. No matter what this cavern holds, regardless of what it means for us, we should be careful lest the agents of the Frostreaper find us unaware."

Uthal had asked what the rest of the group thought of the situation, and Galmath could not help but wonder the same. Was his own mind starting to crack? Was that why his sense of self-preservation was tingling and making him jumpy? Only time would tell if he was right or wrong.

"We passed through here on our way in without incident," Tabral said. The warrior priest glanced at Ungalu, noting the Darkseer's mysterious ritual.

"Sometimes ice is safe to stand on. Other times, it cracks," Aurok added, looking meaningfully at Palu. "So, Oretamer, is there another way around?"

Even as the chieftain asked, Ungalu's ritual augury finished. The seer found both glyphs looking back at him, wheel and woe reflected endlessly in the ice. There was danger in the maze of icicles, but this deep into the Iceveins, there was potential for danger everywhere. Who was to say another path would be safer, if they could find one at all?

OOCRight now, you haven't yet decided to move forward. You could prepare, forge ahead, or look for an alternate path. If you look for an alternate path, someone must make a survival check to find another path; help is an option here. All three options have risks associated. It's up to you which one you do, or if you come up with something else altogether.

Ungalu the Darkseer

Ungalu Darkseer
The Darkseer studied the pictographs that fate had revealed to him, using his fingertips to follow the patterns that defined them, lines that had been carved deeply into the crystal. Perhaps it was only a trick of the light, but some of the pictographs appeared to be faintly glowing: ice and spear, journey and gem. He nodded and without turning to his companions, announced the truth as he understood it.

"There is no need to look for another passage. There is no time. This is the right path, the one we are meant to take. But Galmath is right. There is danger here waiting for us, a challenge to test our worth - the first of many. I say that we do not walk blindly to it."

Rising to his feet with a speed that belied his age, Ungalu took his heartcrystal out of his satchel and held it in front of him. It emitted a strange light, pulsing like a beating heart and transforming the elder Goliath’s wrinkled face into a maze of light and shadow.

"Are you willing to scout ahead, Galmath Bharakas, son of the dragon? Will you seek and locate the danger that our eyes cannot see and our ears cannot hear? You have your sire’s senses and the bravery of your mother’s folk. I can think of no one better than you."

Waiting to see if the dragonspawn would agree to act as the party’s scout or if another would volunteer in his stead, Ungalu smiled, his expression distorted by the many facets of the heartcrystal he held in front of his face.

"Worry not, I will not be sending you into danger as you are, brittle bone and tender flesh, ready to be broken and torn. I will grant you the nimbleness of the howling wind and the stealth of the morning mist. Touch the heartcrystal and be transformed - if you dare."

Galmath
left-aligned image
Galmath waited while the Darkseer did his thing, speaking to the spirits and verifying what he had thought himself. And while it was comforting to hear that the diviner shared the same insight about not being alone, it was unsettling that they were in fact not alone here. A sharp tingle ran down Galmath's back, from the tips of his horns, right down his spine, all the way to the end of his spiked tail. It was chilling in a way that the cold could never be.

"I am neither brittle nor tender," he said, sneering slightly at the spellcaster and his projected version of what strength and stability might be. "I am as all-seeing as the great yellow eye in the sky, as quiet as falling snow, as hidden as a black cloak in the shadows. I understand you believe I am not these things, not from where your mind's eye wanders. But I am not as helpless as you would have everyone here believe with your words of doubt."

He hefted his axe onto his back, dousing as much of the light that was still shining on it as he could possibly afford, and then set off to scout the way ahead, his eyes and ears piercing the darkness, his footfalls muffled, his body staying to the shadows.
