Nerin Lindiar
right-aligned image
Name: Nerin Lindiar
Chosen Plot Hook: The Priestess

Background: Far Traveler (Wanderer)
Trait: Soft-spoken and a consensus-builder. Unafraid to lead, believes in the power of persuasion.
Bond: Freedom and choice are essential to good lives. To choose right over wrong freely is what it means to be truly good.
Ideal: I will fight against tyranny and oppression, and to defend the weak.
Flaw: Because I have traveled so extensively, I don't feel truly at home anywhere or with anyone

Appearance: Tall and robust, significant parts of Nerin's body are covered in intricate tattoos - a custom of her people, who reside in the far north of Ryfel. There, conflicts with the Elves are common, but so are other Elf-like habits, such as living in harmony with nature. A believer that leadership is best exercised from the front, even in battle, she favors lighter armors and wields a heavy quarterstaff of an exotic hardwood that she turned and carved herself. In quiet moments, she enjoys reading a book of meditations left to her by her grandmother, entitled "On the Nature of Things."

Personality: Nerin chooses good. That's not the same as being good, not always, but it speaks to a consciousness. She knows that both good and evil exist in the world, and believes deeply that good is simply better. That helping is better than selfishness. That kindness is better than cruelty. She also believes that it's easy for law and the desire for safety and order to degenerate into callousness and disregard. That isn't to say she actively embraces chaos and disorder, but as someone attuned to nature she understands very well that death brings rebirth and that change is the only constant.

Backstory: She was always a devout girl, which was a little surprising, because nobody else in her family particularly was. From a pretty early age, Nerin habitually spoke of The Martyr as if she were a friend or a playmate. When she was older and could articulate her thoughts more clearly, she'd say that there had never been a day when she didn't feel the Goddess' presence in her daily life - that they were almost companions. It always seemed to be a given that she would enter the priesthood, though her affinity for the natural elements of creation is rather uncommon in Kersdinas. Her peculiar talents probably made her a natural fit, however, to accompany a mission to an undeveloped part of the kingdom.

RP Sample: "But you're not a Druid," Sir Reginald asked. "What's the difference?" Nerin had been asked that question dozens of times over the years. There weren't too many like her, she'd learned...especially in and around Kersdinas. The knight had spent his life in the city, and life on the march was strange to him. She smiled. The answer to his question was simple and profound. "My powers come from The Martyr - I am her servant. Druidry is...far older, and very different. They get their powers, we think, directly from the natural world, which they serve and defend. I grew up in the wilds, and I see the presence of The Goddess in the natural world, and it fills my soul with joy...but again, I am her servant."

He didn't look entirely convinced, or maybe he'd lost interest a few sentences ago. They had a long journey ahead of them, and Nerin felt that she should get to know the knight better. By virtue of their respective positions, the rest of the group gave them a certain deference and distance that was already a little isolating. "How about you, Sir Knight? How did you come to take up the Spear?" "Most people have interesting stories, though they may not realize it. I wonder what's underneath this one?"

Bonus RP: "How could I have been so stupid," Nerin thought as she struggled against the ropes that tied her to a pole, painfully tight. She'd already lost feeling in her hands. "The warning signs couldn't have been more clear. A hag named 'Lady Evil,' for all love. Lizardmen with 'no knowledge' of our missing people. We should have withdrawn and sent for reinforcements. We even could have mounted a surprise attack. Instead, we did nothing. So many dead, and it's my fault." Her head sank down to her chest, and a fresh wave of despair washed over her. Her body jerked with a few silent sobs.

As the dark moment passed, Nerin took a deep breath to steady herself. She remembered Sister Senna, the formidable old priestess whose job it was to give flighty teenaged acolytes the steel they needed to serve the Goddess. "Fear is the enemy. Despair is a foe worse than an angry dragon. They attack the soul, so you defeat yourself. Master your fear, girls. Succumb to despair, and you bring ruin to all who depend on you - and the world depends on you." Those blunt words were a source of strength. She had failed most of those given to her care, but at least one other survived. For that one, she would be strong. She must be strong.

Nerin inhaled deeply. "Breathe. Master your breath, master yourself." This was one of the mantras in the book her grandmother gave her, many years ago. "Breathe in deeply. Feel the air fill you, sustain you, lift you. Breathe in life." She exhaled, pushing all of the breath from her lungs. "Exhale. Expel doubts. Find your center." Her mind began to clear. Slowly at first, but as she continued the controlled exercise, more rapidly. After a few minutes, she lifted her head and opened her eyes.

Dawn was breaking over the horizon.

Only one priest/priestess will be chosen. The other spot would be a different class keeping in mind we have a rogue, paladin, and bard already.

The Fighter
right-aligned image

Name: Eoin Skandar
Chosen Plot Hook: The Fighter
Background: Soldier
Trait: I'm driven by a wanderlust that led me away from home.
Bond: Those who fight beside me are those worth dying for.
Ideal: Ideals aren't worth killing for or going to war for.
Flaw: People who don't take care of themselves get what they deserve.
Appearance: Describe a couple items your character always has with them.
Personality: Eoin is a bitter man and he complains constantly, seeming to have an opinion on everyone and everything. He does his duty quick and efficiently and looks down on young idealistic soldiers who he considers naive. He seems to regret his decision to join and seems to always be staring off into the distance with wonder in his eyes. He feigns indifference in his fellow comrades but they all know he would never leave them behind, its probably the only reason he still serves.
Backstory: His father was a miller and his mother a barmaid. A middle child in a large pack of children, his life was pretty mundane by any standards. Taken by the recruiter telling him he could see the world and escape the boring future he saw his brothers and sister pursuing he signed up as fast as he could, even lying about his age by a year. It did not take him long to see he had been fooled. The most he saw of foreign lands were from atop a garrison wall and even when he did get out, greeting the world through the visor of a helmet and at the point of a spear was one of the coldest ways to experience far away lands. Still though he more than capable and loyal to his fellow soldiers. His main goal is to keep those around him a live and serve out his time till he can finally see the world free of his burden.
RP Sample: “If we didn't know you, you'd be hanging by the neck for treason for such words” a gruff soldier said as he sneakily removed Eoins mug from the table, distracting the drunk squad leader with a politics. Anyone watching could tell the man was well practiced in keeping Eoin from going too far into his drink. “Dead priestess, warrior kings it's all fairy tales.” Eoin slurred as his friend rolled his eyes. This was not his first time hearing Eoin rant. Eoin continued, unaware of his friends vexation. “You've seen, I’ve seen it. We go in, we kill, we bleed, maybe die. The nobles come in at the end, wave some overly ornamented stick around then leave. Next day some bard is bloviating about the brave, fierce nobleman and how he cut down fifty orcs” Eoin paused in his rambling and scanned the table for his drink.
In the background a bard began to strum his lute and sing. “And the great knight Geoffrey, his sword stained red with blood….” the bard sangs. “He wasn't even there….” Eoin bellows at the bard. “I think you've had enough” Eoins friend says as he grabbed the Eoin by the shoulder and got him out the bar, the crowd booing the interruption. “Tim died there. We fought that battle, not some fancy pants lordling” Eoin mumbled as his friend pushed him into the street. “I know, I know Eoin,” The man said comforting Eoin as he lead him back to the barracks.

Bonus RP: One thing Eoin enjoyed most about the front was the danger stripped away the bull. Everything done had a purpose. Not some fanciful purpose of higher ups worrying about useless abstracts like moral or loyalty to the king, but straight forward goal driven purpose. There was no sargent pretending to angry over how shiny you were, complaining about hair growing past your ear or any of that useless make believe. Idle armies sure as hell can conjure up a lot of make believe. For discipline they say, for moral. It was all a lie, just something to do to keep them busy in between the killing. On the front things were maintained to keep you alive, not to keep shimmering for nobility’s aesthetic pleasure.

Eoin looked around as his squad prepared, this wasn't the front but things were serious here. A knight of the Spear, a Priestess, departure in cover of dark. What the hell did he get himself into, this was not his normal duty. He normally was a faceless pawn in a vast formation, not a part of a small unit skulking out under nightfall. You would be hard pressed to get him to admit it, but he was a little excited. The wanderlust boy who wanted to see the world might finally get his chance after all these years.

Why did military drills always have to be conducted at night? You'd think the commanders revel in rousing people out of a perfectly good night's sleep. Though, arriving at the temple grounds, this drill has the look of something far more serious. A Knight of the Spear and a priestess of Evelyn along with a wagon, a chest, and eleven other men, leaving the city under cover of darkness for reasons unknown to a destination unknown. By the goddess, how did you get picked for this?!

Alternate Plot Hook:As they lizards dragged their prisoners along Eoin swore revenge any association be it familial or other the lizardmen possibly had in their lives. He was pretty sure they didn't understand him though, either that or they were the most at peace beings on the planet. While they did treat him rather roughly they were not particularly going out of their way to shut his yap.

The Journey was long enough the initial anger of capture had begun to fade and the guilt if surviving started to settle in. He blamed everyone in order to divert the guilt. The knight, the religious, the kingdoms cancerous need to keep spreading, anything he could think of to keep the blame from himself. Finally as they near the village he pulled himself together. He was a soldier afterall and the mission was not over. As they walked and he stammered on he tugged on his bindings, started taking count of soldiers, weapons, hierarchy anything that might help him escape and get revenge and maybe hopefully locate those missing soldiers. He wasn't going to leave any man behind, he never did.

Apply Now...Again!
NEED A TANK!

We have an opening for a tank character in one of our groups! This is separate from the two previous requested applications and will be placed in a different party. Please apply to the below plot hook.

Race info on Brekka Brekka has a primarily human population with a few dwarves who are descendants of those who once dwelt under the mountains in kingdoms lost to time.

What to put in your app
  • Character Name
  • Race (human or dwarf)
  • Class (front line tank)
  • Appearance: Brief description of your character. Describe a weapon they use or an article of clothing or a special trinket they carry.
  • Personality: Short RP sample demonstrating your character's reaction to the siege. Feel free to create the flesh out the frost giant's army. As of now in the story there are goblins, worgs, hobgoblins and ogres but you can add other things to the army in your story if you go that route.

No characters in the games have been to Brekka yet, so its a mostly blank canvas. The area has a viking / Dane feel minus the longboats and raiding (no ocean). Other than that, have at it.

You'll be starting at level 2.

Deadline for this application will be Friday 6/15/18!

Cadogan
right-aligned image

Name: Cadogan
Race: Human
Class: Fighter

Appearance: Brawler. Scrapper. Ruffian. A nose that's healed crooked enough times to be almost straight. Pale, faded scars along the brow and beneath the eyes. Calloused knuckles that are so used to dealing pain that they no longer feel any of their own. Even a casual glance at Cadogan speaks volumes about the kind of man he is. So it is a finely-worked silver pendant of Evelyn worn about his neck that speaks the loudest, because it seems to contradict everything else that comes so easy to the eye. A fine chain made for a lady, not a mere brute. Craftsmanship that likely cost more than such a man could ever afford. Most telling, however, is that he wears it openly, not hidden as one would expect from something that had been stolen.

Personality RP sample: ”Guards! To the wall!" Cadogan might have been able to ignore the men shouting in the streets, or the wailing of the women and children, but not the horns. It was the damned horns that woke him from his drunken slumber and pushed him into a bleary world of headaches and a sun so bright it burned the soul. Wearing only his breeches and carrying a knife in hand he burst out of his room at the Silvering Inn and stumbled down the stairs into the main room.

”What,” he said, wincing as the throbbing in his head suddenly caught up with him, ”in all the hells is going on?” A drunken, scarred, knife-wielding, naked man in the middle of the inn might have caused a commotion on any other day, but not this day. Cadogan wasn't even certain the woman registered any of those points as she glanced at him, then turned her eyes back on the windows.

”An army sir,” the barmaid cried out, ”marching on the town.” The woman was sheltering behind the bar, as though an attack was imminent, yet even Cadogan's scrambled mind knew they weren't quite that far along yet. Screaming and smoke, he thought, that's when we'll know they're inside the walls. The innkeeper came out of the back, a sword belt now fastened about his great waist, a blade of dubious usefulness held in the scabbard. ”A goblin horde, ogres and giants too. Come down from Hailstone Keep according to the guards.”

Cadogan's free hand had gone to the pendant resting on his chest, a habit he had long since given up on breaking, and he brought it back down to his side. Tilting his head to the side to get a better look through the windows, he watched men and women scurrying through the streets. A thought occurred to him and he turned on his heel and ran back to his room, taking the stairs two at a time as adrenaline overpowered the drink. Rushing through the open door to the window that he had paid good coin for, he looked south on the city gates with hawk-like eyes. Eyes that saw the portcullis being lowered and his chance to make a run for it vanish.

If they find you here? He didn't really have to think on that question for too long. If they come for me, it will be settled in blood, though I think they'll be running too. No place for hired killers to run after the job is finished during a siege like this. He began gathering his scattered clothing, armor, and weapons, getting ready for what was coming. Blood, either way, came the unbidden thought, and he couldn't help but laugh aloud as he reached for the sword hilt at his hip.

The Empty Hills
Open for new Applications I’m going to be forming a new group set in the same world. Looking for a full 5 person party.

Plot Summary
left-aligned image
right-aligned image
Thirdrin and Thofror Bronzemantle, as far as you are concerned these are the two most reprehensible people on the face of the world. Part of your disdain for them is that they are escorting you and a number of other prisoners to Kersdinas to face the King’s justice. Your crimes are your own as is the manner in which the brothers caught you. There are plenty of people like the Bronzemantles who look to profit off the destitute masses who call the Empty Hills their home.

A thousand years ago the final battles between the orcs who had dwelt here, and the invading humans was fought in these hills. Scarce little will grow here and those foolish enough to try usually have their hard work stolen from them. This is where the Kingdom of Rhyfel sends its outcasts, its lesser sons and daughters, those who polite society would wish to simply disappear.

Dry, barren and rocky, this is your home. You are an outcast of the kingdom, a half-orc, a half-elf, a criminal. You’ve been captured for your crimes and are being escorted back to the capital, Kersdinas, for your sentence, most likely death. The kingdom has little patience for those who disrupt the careful order it has maintained for a thousand years.

What we Need to KnowName:

Race: Half-Elf – The elves of Taeth Aresti far to the northeast are still at odds with the humans of Rhyfel. Unions between the two are rare and many will find neither culture will welcome them.

Half-Orc – The orcish hordes that used to inhabit this land retreated across the southern mountains a thousand years ago where they still dwell in scattered, leaderless clans. Unions between orc and human are rare but there is a small population with orc blood in their lineage who dwell in the Empty Hills, unwelcome in the rest of Rhyfel.

Dwarf – Hundreds of years ago, the dwarves who dwelt in mountain kingdoms in the surrounding mountains, fled their ancestral homes. They spoke little of the reasons but were mostly welcomed into human lands as smiths, miners, and brewers. Some fell into drunkenness and debauchery, lamenting their lost heritage. Few still live who fled those kingdoms. You are a child or grandchild of a broken parent come to the Empty Hills to forget past pain.

Human – No one wants to live in the Empty Hills. You’re either born here or you have nowhere else to run.

Halfling – The halflings have a perfectly wonderful settlement on the far eastern border of Rhyfel nestled up against the mountains. Only a halfling would leave that for the adventure of the Empty Hills.

If you'd like to try something else, just ask and maybe I can work it in.

Class:

Alignment: Anything, yes even evil, you are criminals. But if you choose evil, you must have a redeeming quality of some kind. You may not start out a hero, but you will end up one. What about your character would grant you the ability to make this transformation?

Description: A picture is great and helps a lot during the game. Also, please describe at least one article or possession of your character's. What is it, how did they come across it and why is it special to them?

Personality: You can use what's provided in the backgrounds or come up with something of your own.

Backstory: You can include more but specifically what I want to know is what your character did to attract the attention of a pair of bounty hunters. The Empty Hills are kind of the wild west of Rhyfel and are a mostly blank canvas as far as this world is concerned. There are no big cities in this part of the world but there are small villages. What you create here will help shape this corner of the world.

RP Sample: Here is where you can flex your writing muscle a bit. Take the application above you and tell that fellow prisoner a bit about your past as you travel back to the capital in the custody of the dwarven bounty hunters. I'd you to include your impression of that person as well as how your PC would explain their situation to someone.

The first applicant can use Cadogan (the last accepted applicant a few posts back) as their fellow prisoner.

More Info Here is some info copied from the first post about the Kingdom of Rhyfel and the main goddes, Evelyn. If you would like any further clarifications on anything, just ask!

We'll be starting at level 1.

Deadline for applications : 10/19/18

Posting interest! Probably as a Halfling of some shape or description, as I've never played one before and have been wanting to redress this sorry state of affairs.

@tomplum - is there anything else you'd consider essential information about Halflings in this setting, or are you happy for me to take 'disreputable wanderer in search of adventure' and run with it?

Also, do you have any particular restrictions with regard to class choice? I'm currently quite keen on the XGtE subclasses (at least as something to aspire to!), and am also feeling a strange pull towards one of the UA Rangers (Revised or possibly Spell-less)... more than happy to stick to the PHB if you prefer, however!

@ ellie - feel free to make your halfling as you see fit.

I'm not restricting class for this group. UA ranger is fine.

Its varied a bit between the three games already underway but they started in the beginning of February and there's been like 3-4 encounters in that time. The bulk of the adventure is RP but I do try to sprinkle in enough combat to make all the xp tracking and level ups relevant.

Its more important to have strong characters than a PC who is min-maxed. I do make a conscious effort to make sure each PC has proper motivation for the task at hand and will include as much of people's backstories and histories into the campaign as I can reasonably do.

I wouldn't go so far as to call it sandbox as there are places I try to get the party and things that I have planned to happen but often the course between A and B is improvised based on what the PC's do and choose.

Awesome! Lovely to hear

Last question I think: Are you ok with the UA Circle of Spores for the druidess I'm planning on rolling?
