Curse of Cthulhu

Game NameCurse of Cthulhu
Game SystemCall of Cthulhu
ThemeA letter from the mother of an old friend leads you to examine the dark corners of the world.
FlavourThe world is a dark and gritty place, of gangsters, corruption, prohibition and violence.
Plot Summary
Curse of Cthulhu

Taster: You receive a letter one morning, the handwriting is quite spidery, either it was written in haste, or the author of it was somewhat distressed. You open the envelope, and remove a single sheet of paper, “I apologise for writing to you out of the blue, as it has been many years since you visited our family home here in Providence with my son, and your friend Brian. I regret to inform you that Brian, is not well, he has gone insane, and had to have him committed to a sanatorium for his own safety. Brian had grown increasingly moody and withdrawn since you last saw him, he moved out of the family home here in Providence, and took up residence in an old farmhouse near Woonsocket, Rhode Island. I beg that you come to see me here in Providence, I wish to discuss Brian’s situation, and I hope that you will accompany me to see him in the sanatorium. In the hope that if Brian sees you again it may help bring him back to his right mind. Yours Sincerely Mrs. Mabel Timmons 28th of July, 1920.”

Rule books
Welcome to the world of Call of Cthulhu where eldritch horror lurks around every corner of the 1920’s. The rules used will be edition 5, there are newer editions which I do not have currently. A supplemental book used will be The Green & Pleasant Land, which is for Call of Cthulhu in the UK during the same time period, which has additional occupations.

Tone:
The world is a dark and gritty place, of gangsters, corruption, prohibition and violence.

What you can expect:
The game will have elements of exploration, investigation, and probably some combat. 40%/40%/20%. I don’t have hard requirements regarding player’s posts with regards to grammar, or spelling, but to remain in keeping with the game period I will endeavour to try and write in US English, rather than my native UK English.

What I expect from players:
That they will conduct themselves with civility to all players and the keeper alike. Unruly players may be removed from the game, as we can often have drama in our lives off this site, and therefore don’t need additional drama in our hobby within the site. Please keep political, religious, or sexual orientation out of the game, unless it is directly within the context of roleplaying.

Posting rate
Initially my posting rate will be once every couple of days, but that is negotiable.

Game type
This submission is for a group game, of between 4 to 8 players, the game is a published game from 1990. If you have played Curse of Cthulhu before, I will not reject your submission, but will trust you not to meta-game and use out of character knowledge. If there is substantial interest from players, I would not be adverse to running more than one game. The game is set in our world, starting in New England in the early 1920’s. If you do not have access to the rule book’s I will go through character creation with you.

Alternatively, I would recommend looking at a free Call of Cthulhu character generator, I use one called Byakhee which I think is at version 3.03 with additional paks. It makes character generation very easy and can be used for automatically upgrading skill points at significant sections of the adventure. Players will be selected on a first come first served basis, please send all submissions by PM.

Please do not post dice rolls in the recruitment thread, thank you.

Submissions will be accepted up to and including the 31st of December, with the game formally starting in the first week of January.

Well this certainly looks interesting! I'd very much like to enter my application, however, I only have the 5.6 edition rulebook (and the 7th edition rulebook, but that's neither here nor there). Is that similar enough to the 5th edition rulebook to create my own character sheet, or should I just focus on writing my character's background, so we can work together on the mechanics afterwards?

Hi Demonslayer,

I can't imagine there will be a massive difference between 5 and 5.6, and it's more about the narrative than the hard rules. So please PM me your character sheet when you get the chance. I'll see if I can find a copy of 5.6 just out oif interest really.

Perhaps I should summon a flock of Byakhee's to drag some of the 190+ people that have viewed this thread, and make them read from the dark pages of the Necronomicon.

Absolutely Strange2099, I'd already set one spot aside for you, send me a character, when you get a chance. DemonSlayer's already sent one, and I'm hoping Touketsu will do shortly. If necessary, I'll run the game for the three people who have already shown interest. If anyone else wants to join in at some point that's cool too.

Hey, sorry for the delay on my character. I’ll have him to you shortly; out of curiosity, is there already an investigative journalist? I’d rather cover our bases as a group than throw too many eggs into the same essential skills.

Also, will we be rolling for our stats?

Hey no problem Touketsu, so far the only confirmed character is a private investigator submitted by DS. Yes please roll stats and send by PM, if your POW is less than 10 I will allow rerolls as 50 san characters aren't so much on a slippery slope into madness more of a cliff edge.

I've been curious about Call of Cthulu as a system, but haven't really looked into it.

Best of luck with your search.

Hi Marshmallow, I thank you kindly, if you ever feel like dipping your toe in the dark waters of the esoteric creepiness that is Call of Cthulhu, you are more than welcome to come in, the water's fine. Just stay clear of the tentacles.

Hi, I am very interested in playing Call of Cthulhu. My only experience has been Keeping for some friends in 7th edition. I do, however, have the 6th ed. pdf. From what I understand, 5th and 6th are very similar, but I haven't compared them directly. Is that okay? I could probably get the 5th ed. rules somewhere if necessary.

I'll try creating a character with Byakhee.

Hi p02flapjack, Create it in either Byakhee or as a 6th ed and I'll compare it against 5th ed. When the game moved from 4th to 5th they dumped some of the old skills, or renamed/combined them into other skills.
