The Untold

Game NameThe Untold
Game SystemStar Wars RPG
ThemeSWSE: Untold Stories of the CIS, Alternate Universe
FlavourWetwork, Politics, Investment, Character Growth
Rundown

Deadline for Applications is: Sunday, February 24th.
Summary
Star Wars: The Untold is a game focused on illuminating a side of the Clone Wars often forgotten by the ensuing era of galactic imperialism: the Separatists.

The year is 22 BBY, and the Clone Wars have begun. As the story goes, in just three years time the war comes to an end, and effectively ushers in a new era for the galaxy. This era was home to many heroic tales of bravery and hope- but also ones of deceit and loss. On one side, you have the Republic. A veritable bastion of progress and the foundation of galactic civilization, it has lasted for thousands of years. Though there is unrest, it is hard to argue that the Republic is completely ineffective.

On the other, you have the Confederacy of Independent Systems. Stifled by the Republic’s treatment of its blockade of Naboo, and spurred on by hidden forces, it represents thousands of Outer Rim systems that think the Republic are corrupt and lazy. While many of the Separatists were driven by greed, many more systems and individuals joined because of the Republic’s own ineptitude and corruption. Outer Rim systems that were once plagued by piracy and slavery saw a glimmer of hope in the Trade Federation emergence. They, after all, were the ones that curbed crime, not the Republic. While the relationship between the Separatists and the Outer Rim is a complicated one, to say that the Separatists only fought for their own greed wouldn’t be entirely accurate.

The player party would be Separatist aligned, perhaps not strongly so: but they work with them all the same. Rather than fighting with their backs against a clone army, jedi knights at their side, their partners include the Trade Federation and its veritable droid army. Work your way up doing small jobs for CIS middlemen until you become trusted enough to become a partner, and then work some more. Make money and connections. Achieve your goals.

Perhaps… Even become a major player yourself.

Campaign Style
The style of this game is a mixture of more straight forward mission oriented combat, espionage, and subterfuge, as well as political machinations and grander world building. I’m a fan of having arcs where there’s some action and adventure to have, but also periods of down time where characters are allowed to not only improve themselves but also navigate the broad political shenanigans going on in the world.

To that extent, I’m looking for players interested in a more nuanced exploration of this era. I’m open to all sorts of characters, but I’m especially interested in ones that play up to the strengths of this campaign: members of a race that was wronged by the Republic, droids, Outer Rim nobles, smugglers that fell upon the wrong side of Republic law, and bounty hunters wanting to work where the credits lie. That doesn’t mean those are the only characters I’d like to see, the galaxy is pretty big, after all…

Application and Character Creation:
Below is what I’d like you to fill out for your characters. This campaign will begin at level 1, using the standard 25 point buy system. Any official SWSE books are fair game.

Name: It’s a big galaxy, sure, but you gotta have something to go by.
Species: Most are allowed, with exception to the Gen’dai (unless you truly have a fantastic hook) and Yuuzhan Vong.
Class: This doesn’t have to be set in stone, but I’d like to know what you consider would be most appropriate for your character!
Hook: So what’s their deal? How do they connect with the CIS? I’d like this be relatively self contained, no need to write a page worth.
Extra: Got some appropriate tunes? Trivia? Lay it on me.

Example Concepts
Here are some example concepts that could work as good starting hooks:

Noble
- You belong to a small Outer Rim family with political connections. Though the planet you are from has not formally joined the Confederacy, you seek to get in their good graces for various reasons.
- Why do you want to join? Money? Safety? Ideals?
Scoundrel
- Once a smuggler, though unfortunately caught by Republic enforcement. You manage to get out, and are offered a tidy sum to do work for the Confederacy.
- What was the job? Were you running civilian supplies to Separatist worlds under siege, or were you smuggling spice into the Deep Core?
Scout
- As a member of an Outer Rim community with little interaction with the senate, you were surprised when your planet was used by the Republic as a military outpost, and no objection would work.
- How do you want to resolve this, peacefully, or violently? Likewise, how does your cultural come into play?
Soldier
- Maybe you operate as a bounty hunter, or a mercenary, but either way with the war came new business opportunities. You are approached by a Separatist sympathizer, who tells you about some fantastic job opportunities...
- Where are you from, originally? How does this come into play with your decision, or is the money good enough that it doesn't matter?
Jedi
- Perhaps you failed your examinations to proceed as a Padawan, or you made that decision yourself. Either way, you could be an ex-Jedi with nowhere to go, wanting to prove yourself and grow your skills- even without the approval of the Jedi Temple.
- Who was your past master, and how did that relationship play out?

DM Info and Other Things
So… hey! This is not my first Star Wars: SAGA Edition campaign I’ve DMed, but it is my first PBP one. I’ve been playing SWSE and PBP on and off for about five years now, so I’m not entirely new. I am however still sort of new to RPGX, so there are definitely some behind-the-scenes stuff I’m still getting acquainted with. If that’s not a problem, feel free to throw in an application!

In terms of a posting rate… Well, I’m a student, research assistant, and have a handful of other projects outside of RPGX. As much as I love to RP, my schedule isn’t always the best, so at most I can promise about a post or two a week, depending on how things flow.

House Rules
1. SAM in full effect, in particular for UTF checks.
2. Armored Defense as a talent is gone, and it has been folded into all of the armor proficiency feats.
3. Climb, Jump, and Swim have been folded into one skill: Athletics.
4. Both Technician and Force Prodigy heroic classes are allowed!

Questions/suggestions about house rules can be made as well, and this list is not final.

Name: Dhamia Raxum
Species: Female Zabrak (Dathomir)
Class: Force Adept
Hook: Mother Talzin has been selling the services of the Nightsisters to various members of the Confederacy of Independent Systems. Dhamia is a young Adept Nightsister. Her previous contract has ended and, as per Mother Talzin's orders, she is seeking to provide services to other members of the Confederacy of Independent Systems. She has no ill will towards the strange outlanders of the galaxy it is simply her duty to the Nightsisters and Mother Talzin.

Other: Right so I know we can't be a Jedi or a Sith. We can't be super cool badass like Asajj Ventress. So, this is about as close as I might get.

@Ysolde

I should have clarified, but starting as a Jedi is entirely possible! The background necessary for making that work might have to be tweaked, but it's certainly something you can begin with. Plus, there are a ton of interesting options for making a Sith aligned character.

@MaximumUnicorn

Glad to hear! Working for the CIS does make this a ripe setting for running a Droid Commander.

I've actually gone ahead and tossed some example hooks/concepts to help get people on the right track. Character creation for this setting is pretty open, so it can be rough to find a fun concept that plays to this setting strengths.

If you've played DnD 3.5 or D20, you are about 3/4s of the way there already.

Yep! This system is pretty heavily based on 3.5. Hell, even if you've played some Pathfinder you'll find yourself at home pretty easily.

Which is to say, if you're interested and wouldn't mind learning the new parts of this system, you're more than welcome to apply sageheart. I don't mind people who are completely new either.

I'm interested. Let me think about builds. and I'll update with an app.

Ak'ash Application
right-aligned image
Name: Ak'ash
Species: Duros
Class: Technician Class (SWSaga Wiki Source)
Hook: Ak'ash is a CIS mid-rank technical specialist working in the CIS as a droid troubleshooter. The trade federation has need of skilled labor capable of correcting the fine detail errors that could plague mass-produced and manufactured droid units. She is one of those employees who thought she'd be working in a banal yet interesting job diagnosing glitchy droids and performing routine memory wipes.
Extra: I found this picture that works pretty well.
Also, I just realized that Maximum Unicorn was doing a droid character. I wouldn't mind having some kind of connection with OOM-3, if MU is amenable to it.
Music: Switch.Rude Awakening (even has a star wars splash screen!)
Personality Ak'ash is a Duros who's lost most of the spark and enthusiasm of youth. It sputters, barely hanging on, if only something amazing would happen to reignite her spirit. As is, she's just grinding her way (sometimes literally) through life, living day by day and she loathes it on a subconscious level.

She's currently dull, boring, and does things more rote and routine than even most droids. But she used to be an energetic girl who actually found the eccentricities of droid programming to be exciting. She loved spicy food, but has since grown used to the bland nutri-blocks she gets shipped now. Overall, she's just one good day away from remembering who she used to be and breaking out of the corporate drone shell she's built around herself.

I love anything Star Wars related, but I was going to pass this game by until someone said it was mostly like D&D 3.5, a game that I know well. So <shrug> I started thinking up a concept. Hopefully, I didn't go too dark sided

Revenge is best served with a million slash's of ones claw's
right-aligned image
  • Name: Shi Rhas
  • Species: Female Cathar
  • Class: Scout
  • Concept: Saboteur
Hook (aka Background):
As most Cathar, Shi Rhas has always despised the Mandalorians that had culled her people during the Mandalorian Wars so long ago. To this day her race has struggled to repopulate itself and is still in danger of dying out. While most Cathar feel too proud to ask for aid from the Republic, Shi has always wondered why someone from the Republic didn't help her people anyway. In shi's young mind, all the philanthropic's of the Republic seemed to ignore the Cathar race as a whole. When you add in the fact that her mother(Cysin) and father(Sonuhr) did not wish to give Shi up as an infant to the Jedi when they found out she was Force Sensitive despite the pressure the Jedi put on them through the Cathar government, it is little wonder Shi Rhas feels resentment against the Republic. In the end, her parents felt the need to sell their home and business and join Cysin's brother, Nako Juk, in buying an old Corellian military transport vessel and refitting it into their home as they became nomadic traders just to get away from the pressure of it all. Shi grew up hearing her parents tell wondrous tales of her birth world and resented the Jedi for chasing her parents away from a world she has never seen.

This resentment was stoked into a fury when the Clone Wars started. Shi Rhas had just turned sixteen a few months ago and was considered an adult by Cathar standards. Her parents even trusted her to run a simple supply errand for the ship on her own. Their ship was not taking on cargo at this station, only refueling, so they were docked on one of the long docking arms. They, of course, sent Nako's son Isan to watch over her but he went back to the ship early with a present for his mother, Dysyh. She was almost back to the ship herself when the station went on High Alert and the blast doors leading into the docking arms shut in front of Shi. A handy viewport gave her a perfect view of what was to come.

Shi had not paid much attention to the Galactic News, but she knew enough to know they were docked at a separatist space station. She really didn't care though. They were independent's, and they could do business with whoever they pleased. Shi Rhas even preferred the Separatist to the Republic. Anyone who gives the bully that the Republic is a political black eye was a good sentient in her view. When the station went into lockdown, all she could do was stand there and watch out the viewport as the Clone Trooper's attacked, with her family's ship as a backdrop to the death and devastation that followed. For some reason, the vessel that had been her home for the entirety of her sixteen-year long life did not depart the station. Maybe her parents didn't want to leave without her, or maybe their old ship had some mechanical problem. Shi did not know why they stayed, but they did. The Republic was not here to conquer, only to destroy military targets, so she heard them say at a later date. Shi Rhas watched as the battle unfolded. Watched all the death and destruction a young girl could stomach. And then she watched as a Republic fighter strafed her family's ship from bow to stern.

As her family died in an explosion of fire, shrapnel, and vacuum, Shi Rhas felt a pit open up inside of herself. The rage and pain that came forth consumed her. She had little memory of the events after her parent's death. But when Shi next awoke, she found herself in a holding cell knowing in her heart that she had done something terrible. Shi was later told that she went berserk and attacked several people. One civilian and two security guards were in the medbay recovering from severe wounds she had caused with her claws and teeth. She apologized and said she could not remember anything, though that was not wholly true. Shi could remember how oh-so-good it felt to accept her inner rage. How powerful and invincible it made her feel. So much so that it scared her. For several weeks she lingered in her cell bemoaning her fate and what she had done until a slick looking human showed up. He told the guard that he was her court-appointed attorney, but he wasn't. He worked for CIS, and he wanted to offer her a job. He was impressed with how a young girl could cause so much damage and had this whole speel planned to recruit her. But once she realized what he was offering her, Shi Rhas simply said "Yes." With a passionate purr. She would have her revenge against the Republic or die trying.

Extra:
  • Got some appropriate tunes?
I don't do music, sorry. However, in the words of Dark Helmet, "But if you must, you must." Find an old copy of Cat Scratch Feaver and listen till your heart's content.
<<<This song played on my way home, and I smiled all the way through it >>>
  • Trivia?
The Cathar race was almost annihilated as the Mandalorian's killed almost every Cathar on their homeworld during the Mandalorian Wars. Can you say 'Genocide'?
  • Lay it on me.
    Here's a Woompa <Splat!>
  • Personality: Cathar's are known to be a moral and passionate Species with strong ties to tradition and family. It is why Shi's mother and father went to such extremes to keep their force sensitive daughter from the Jedi. And Shi Rhas is no different. She thought of Dysyh Juk as a second mother. Nako Juk as a second father. And she even considered Isan Juk an annoying but overprotective older brother. They were her family, and she watched them all die right in front of her. Shi Rhas's passions are focused on getting revenge against the Republic, and her one Goal in life right now is to see the Republic fall. But she is still a moral creature and has felt in her training with the CIS that her morals will be put to the test, or even sundered if she is to continue on her path.

Silk: I'd take a look at the Scout class, they have a whole talent tree from one of the splats called Spy. As far as PrCs, you have both the Infiltrator and the Assassin depending on how you want to go with it.

Runetide: I'm all for a connection between our two, should make for some fun adventures between Droid and fixer.

Hey y'all, sorry about my sporadic replies. Been sick lately so I haven't been the most attentive...

@Silk: Like what MaximumUnicorn said, the Scout has a spy talent tree. Infiltrator is a prestige class that's more about the physical aspect of being a spy (think military applications). Assassin is... Well, pretty straight forward. You also have Charlatan from the Scum and Villainy books which makes use of a lot of spy talents, though the Charlatan is more about using your wiles to get what you want rather than getting physical.

All in all, loving the apps coming in. I'll have a more concrete deadline and group size soon, once this nasty cold wears off.

Thanks for all the help. The Scout and Infiltrator prestige class sounds exactly what I was looking for. The wiki only has a bare-bones overview of the Infiltrator class so I'll have to do some more googling until I find it. Which book is it from?

Edit: Oh, and get well soon Gravitywolf. I've been lucky so far this year myself.

I was planning on using the Skill Use the Force and take the "Force Perception" from the 'Sence Tallent Tree'. It states that you are considered Trained in the Perception skill for the purpose of using the "Force Perception" Tallent.
  • Does this mean the Use the Force skill can do everything the Perception skill can do?
  • Some of the Talents in the Scout 'Spy Tallent Tree' require you to be Trained in Perception. Would taking the "Force Perception Tallent" consider this requirement meet?
  • Or would I have to use a skill point to Train in Perception to meet the requirement even with the "Force Perception" Tallent?
Edit: Actually, the Force Perception Tallent in the wiki says: "You are considered Trained in the Perception Skill." So I don't know which would be right, the core book or the wiki page? (it does have a lot more information than the core book)

Edit #2: The only place I could find the Infiltrator Prestige class at was here. I do not think it is for SAGA edition as it has a requirement of the Balance skill and gives Defense Bonus as you level. Both are not represented in SAGA as I have noticed so far. I'm guessing it is from a D20 game, not SAGA. I will keep looking.
  • Found it in the Force Unleashed book!

Infiltrator can be found in the Force Unleashed splatbook, it's one of the prestige classes found there. No idea why it isn't on the wikia.

To answer your question about Force Perception, let me read up on what the SAGA core rulebook states, then give you my ruling after...

1. Technically no, the Force Perception talent states you may use it to avoid surprise, notice enemies, detect influence, and sense deception. It thus cannot be used for other perception checks such as: searching, eavesdropping, and hearing ambient noises.
2. This is a weird ruling and I'm not sure if it was errata'd. Technically you're considered trained in Perception for the purposes of using Force Perception for the previous actions. I'm not sure if this would count.

That being said, after reading the rules in the SAGA core rulebook, personally I'm willing to just go ahead and let you use UTF as your Perception skill if you take that talent. If we want to be technical, the book says that Force Perception doesn't work for a few perception actions, but also this is Star Wars and frankly it's not too unbelievable if you were to use the force to notice traps and other such things.

tl;dr:

The core rulebook is weird but I'm okay with Force Perception just having you use UTF for your perception rolls/requirements. No need to have it be complicated.
