The Afterwards
left-aligned image
Fledidi had fluttered her eyes at Cadmun as a coffee had been handed to her, and the fairy noted Kraghbar's curious gaze upon her as well. Were these two in cahoots now? Was this some kind of experiment from the always curious young fellow? Surely everyone, at some point in their lives, wondered what might happen if a tiny fairy drank something fueled by a dark and oft roasted magic. The power of "zipzap" or whatever it was called. The true name was caffeine of course, but Fledidi's education in the sciences and even the mysterious ways of herbalism, was surely lacking from any previous attempts at self-education.

She should have turned it down. Really said "no thanks" this time around. The fairy veterinarian was oh so exhausted though! That nightmarish evening worrying about how the vacation was about to turn into a dangerous search, and hopefully not a destroy mission! The overeating to excess of unusual foods. The new faces. It had all really worn her down.

Leaning forwards, she sniffed at the young scholar's offering and the steam arising from a layer of frothy brown.

Her eyes lit up like tiny blue hooded lanterns!

"Whoa!"

Yes, this was going to pack a punch. A wink to Cadmun and Kraghbar as though accepting a dare, and she took a sip, and then a gulp.

"Imagine this with chocolate cake on the side... or..."

Perhaps with thanks, her train of thoughts related to sweet treats was terminated by the arrival of that slinky... Wilcock guy. Slippery, that one, Fledidi thought. Slippery as a lake-swimmer, or an eel in a bucket of snot. Then, came the unveiling of a map. Hovering up to get a look between the many sets of heads peering down at it, the fairy darted side to side trying to catch a glimpse. Eventually having found a position that allowed her to study it, she learned the error of her ways. The parchment just wouldn't stay still! It was like there were two of them, dancing, in time with a heart beating oh so fast, and a head that was launching thoughts at her mind like a hasted repeating crossbow!

"Huh? Where is that again? Shouldn't we go north first? What? Are you all holding the map upside down?"

A flurry of activity and then she settled back into a seat.

"I feel... funny. I think I'm going to have to trust you on this one. Navigation isn't my strong suit... but if you keep this coffee stuff away from me I'll be a handy scout if you want."

Cadmun
left-aligned image
”Ah…of course.” Cadmun seemed suitably chastened by the massive orc’s words. “...I merely meant…if our fortunes just so happened to align…well…” The excitable scholar coughed. “...But of course, not if it endangers our mission.”

Ah but then the good Captain Wilock finally put in an appearance and it was time for business! Cadmun quickly finished off what remained of his breakfast before heading over to hopefully find a spot with a good view of the map. As the Captain spoke at length about the various difficulties facing the lands the scholar found himself rubbing at the scruff on his chin, pale-blue eyes viewing the map intently.

Such a strange land, inhabited by words, creatures, and faiths both alien and familiar. Cadmun wondered if perhaps they were all ‘strangelings’ after a fashion, with their group merely being the latest arrivals.

…An interesting thought perhaps, but not productive to their current quandary.

At any rate Cadmun listened carefully to Leonora’s, Harper’s, and Jane’s words, hemming to himself…

“I don’t claim to know either Sir Roderick’s or Prince Ragglink’s hearts…but I do know it never hurts to do a little groundwork before jumping into the unknown. I agree with Jade’s suggestion of searching for clues in Lareg.”

Besides, it would give him an excuse to experience more of this land and it's locals' fascinating culture.

Liam
right-aligned image

Liam listens intently as first Leonora and then Jane share their insights. Together, they seem to have a workable plan. Leonora knows Sir Roderick well and feels confident she has his goal in mind. Jane makes the valid case that they should stop at the same place Leonora believes they would resupply for additional information. After all, Liam muses, "strangelings" like them would certainly stick out in this place.

When there is a pause in the conversation, Liam asks the others "Both Leonora and Jane seem to have given us a solid approach. Are there any objections? If not, then let us head to this Larag first."

Kraghbar al-Gruun
left-aligned image

"Right, you're one of those 'thinking all the time' types, aren't you? Even without the pointy ears, you're still a Librarian." Kraghbar gave Cadmun a friendly punch in the arm as Wilcock made his appearance. "Never ask me to even guess what's up in that head of yours, but ya gotta turn that brain off sometime. Works for me when it feels like the old headmeat is gonna blow."

Now admittedly, it did not take much to overtax his rather large but underutilized mind, but that had never worried the rotund orc. It did its job and served his needs, so as far as he was concerned, it was working at optimum capacity. Which made it all the more frustrating when he was forced to consider another mystery as he beheld the map of the region they were to travel.

"Some real orcy names they got here in this kingdom. Another one of those samesies situations between worlds. Huh." Kraghbar's attention was drawn almost equally between the linguistic curiosity on the map before him and the overly energetic buzzing of Fledidi as she flitted to and fro on her caffeine high. Her movements were such that he couldn't help but throw just the slightest bit of concern her way. "You're sounding funny, Fledididi. Looking it too. You don't feel explody or nothing, do you?"

On to the matter at hand, Kraghbar had no real objections to the proposed direction, save for a matter of time.

"Getting some talk out of the locals sounds good, but we shouldn't waste time if we get nothing out of them quick. The folks good with the gab get what you can, we eat up, rest, eat some more, then take off in the direction of the biggest bad around. Hopefully we'll come across a couple of them evil wood things for some nice sport." The orc's scars were stretched to unbearable breaking as he smiled wide at the prospect of facing any number of the creatures in battle.

Morning

Captain Wilcock munched on a piece of fish as the party talked. "Aye, the Whisper Wood might've delayed them some. Odd tales about that place, but then many of the woods seem to be gettin'... stranger, in the past few years. Anyhow Larag is along the way 'n your plan sounds sensible."

The otter captain smiled at Harper, "Don't sell yerself short, Harp, there's plenty of rivers and lacks for a boatlegs to make themselves useful around. 'Sides, you'll learn fast. You'd better."

Torbeth nodded, "You will all learn much, being strangers from afar. In any case word of Prince Ragglink and Sir Roderick has already caused some buzz in Larag. I am sure the chief of that domain will have much to share if you make it worth her while..."

Captain Wilcock snorted, "Aye she's a canny one, that old Rhullo. I passed by her on m'way south 'fore I circled back, almost made the trip cost me! She's one wicked haggler that."

Torbeth nodded ponderously, "The King will send forth his goodwill so you can rely on that alone to guarantee her cooperation, though it will cost his majesty later down the line. If you can manage to secure her wisdom and aid without requiring the King's favour, we would be much obliged to you. In any case the quest must begin before too much time passes. I worry about the prince and will be much settled when he returns to us."

Captain Wilcock stood and stretched, "Aye, good luck. Ye can keep the map, 'twas a spare in anycase. I'm going West 'n up Rotheby to Bamburgh and beyond, I hope we can meet again 'n you lot can tell me more o' yer own adventures. Fair waters keep ye."

Torbeth shrugged at Kraghbar's comment, "I don't know what you mean by 'orcy' but I'd guess that a name's a name, who knows why the old names stuck. Maybe there's some connection, but damned if I know what it is. I wish you good hunting out there, whatever comes up. You'd better pack your bags if you haven't already, Brogg is waiting for you down at the docks."

As you walked down to the docks, it seemed that word of your arrival and the light of a fresh day had brought a curious crowd to watch you. Curious toddarts and other yondering folk of all types crowded platforms and walkways as they watched you pass. Whispers of concern, mistrust, excitement, wonder, and all other sorts accompanied the crowd, a general buzz of unease that made the air seem heavy.

Perhaps in all this quiet uncertainty, someone could try to charm or otherwise win over the crowd?

Brogg waited down at the docks, his dried lily pad bare of all but his self. Next to him a large wooden raft of sturdy design bobbed in the light waves that splashed against the base of the trees. On the dock sat a veritable pile of supplies, enough for two weeks journey.
"Why good morning fair folk." the old toddart croaked, "It's a pleasure to be seeing you all again so soon. I seem to be the center of a whole bunch of interesting events and lots of attention, it almost seems a bit much for an old wart like myself.

But don't be concerned. I won't croak under pressure, you don't live as long as I have without a bit of steel in your bones."

OOC

The lily pad, as you know, can hold all of you (though not comfortably) and isn't exceptionally sturdy. However it gives an advantage in the swamp terrain for those familiar with its operation.
The raft, however, can hold up to 1500 pounds of weight, is wider, and sturdier, while also being a bit stiffer and less agile in the water.
There are 24 supplies (2 pound per supply, more information in Homebrewery) per person, which in turn adds up to 336 pounds in total. You, of course, are not required by any means to lug around this huge bunch of supplies. In the wilds, you will be more likely to sustain yourselves through survivalist methods, and supplies are more meant to supplement this.

Leonora
right-aligned image

Leonora listens closely to the suggestions of her allies, conceding that she did not know for certain sir Roderick hadn't gotten sidetracked by locals. 'Is there much traffic, in the area?' she asked of her hosts- captain Wilcock in particular, guessing he had more experience traveling the lands than Torbeth. 'Do you think it likely sir Roderick and the prince have encountered anyone who might've led them towards a different path?'

At the mention of Larag's mistress, Leonora's eyes narrow. 'Chief Rhullo... We shall be careful with her,' she promised. 'If we are at all capable of securing her aid without invoking the king's favour, then we shall. What can you tell us of her?' the half-elf asked. 'Does she have any specific interests or wants which we may be able to leverage against her?'

--------

At the docks, Leonora delighted in the attention heaped upon their little group by the locals. No, not the attention- rather, their presence. As alien as these lands and their inhabitants were, Leonora could not help but smile at their seemingly kind and curious hearts, their friendly and helpful demeanours. Her expression only fell, a little, when she compared this world to her own, and found the comparison favourable to the former.

When she came upon Brogg, her smile turned wider. 'Hello, Brogg,' she greeted the old Toddard. 'I hope this morning finds you well. Fortunately, we'll be on our way soon, leaving the excitement of the docks for the quiet of the river,' she assured their guide.

Looking around, Leonora noticed both Brogg's lily pad, and a far more mundane raft, which she regarded with a hint of dejection. With everything else in this world so wonderful, seeing so common a thing was almost jarring. 'Brogg,' she started, 'would you mind if I join you on your lily pad? I must confess I greatly enjoyed traveling by it last time we met, and I think I would much enjoy repeating the experience.'

Captain Wilcock shrugged and wobbled his hand back and forth. "The Trollflood, as ye might guess by its name, isn't travelled much by regular folk. Typically only boatsmen or parties with decent sized crews and profit on the line move up 'n down it. There is a small village sitting on Loch Gal, but there's not many folk who cross over eastwards or westwards, but rather north 'n south. I heard another ship was moving down the river, so they might've run int' them. "

Torbeth hummed, "Or a troll."

The otter shrugged, "Or a troll. Anyways, Chief Rullo's a money minded toaddart with an eye for talent 'n opportunity. If'n ye have some idea or item she thinks has potential, she might give you her aid in exchange for teachin' one of her assistants on how to use it."

Captain Wilcock grinned, "Personally, I think seven new strangelin's can muster up somethin' we've never seen afore, and ol' Rhullo'll milk that fer all it's worth. Just make sure you can get what ye want out o' the deal. Right now the market on troll-craft has right dried up, and so she's tryin' t' pivot her folk into other markets t' increase her influence."

Brogg smiled and nodded, "Why of course Lady Leonora, I would be happy to have you aboard my lily again. I packed some fine berries for the trip, something I thought you all might enjoy." The old toddart opened his pack and retrieved a modestly sized jar of small, dull orange berries. "Pop berries these are, their skins are brittle and require a bit of pressure, but they burst sweetly afterwords and are a favorite of toddart children. They're no meal, but they make for a delightful snack."

Liam had called a consensus. They were to head to Laraq first, which seemed just fine to the Teifling. She was still unsure of what her value could be, but eager to at least be on the move again... Idle minds being a dangerous thing on voyages such as this!

Once down on the Docks, Harper was pleased to see Brogg again. And the large amount of supplies, which she assumed were waiting for them. "Good morning Brogg" She greeted the Toddart. "Are we to take the raft as well? we barely all fit on your lily pad last night, and now we've extra supplies to bring as well?" She asked, already assuming the affirmative, and stepping aboard the larger watercraft to check it's construction. "I can pilot this thing... Just need to make sure we split the load. Supplies, and people, so that if something should happen we don't lose it all in one go!" She offered, stepping back onto the docks and heading over to start loading the supplies. 'At least I can be more than precious cargo at the start of this Adventure...'

Smiling at the Toddard, Leonora bowed her head gratefully. 'What wonderful refreshments you have with you, whenever we meet.' Eagerly she tried one of the berries, taking a moment to savour the fruit's sweet flavour, before offering the jar to her companions. 'They're quite good,' she assured them, before turning back to Brogg.

'I confess, I look forward to traveling with you again,' the half-elf spoke earnestly. 'This world... I find it has me mesmerized with its wonders, though no doubt those wonders are but mundane to you. I would appreciate hearing your stories, your knowledge of the land,' she nodded.

As the party was ushered from the hall after concluding that Larag would be their first destination Jane hurriedly scooped up one last mouthful of breakfast and trotted after the others, not wanting to choke on what she had in her mouth.

Outside, she had been expecting a bit more fanfare, the strangers going after their lost prince. But the air was heavy with mistrust and she didn’t have anything magic wise prepared for the day that was flamboyant or festive. So the Cleric waved and smiled and nodded at any of the Toddarts that looked at her.

Arriving at the docks she was pleased to see Brogg upon his lily pad. “Good morning Brogg, I did not think we would see you so soon,” she greeted him. She took one of the offered orange berries. The ‘pop’ surprised even though she had told about it.

As much fun as it had been to ride on Brogg’s lily pad the day before, Jane wanted something a bit sturdier under feet. “I’ll ride with you Harper. This looks a bit more solid and I think you will have better luck steering this than the lily pad for now. I am sure you will get it mastered in now time. This will also give us some time while we travel to figure out what we can offer Chief Rullo,” the cleric said arrange some of the supplies to make room for the others that wanted to ride on the raft.

Cadmun
left-aligned image
The scholar looked uncharacteristically serious as he nodded (after nearly being bowled over by that playful punch anyways), taking in Kraghbar’s words. Despite the orc’s claims of being simple, Cadmun could sense the difference between them in terms of practical, real-world experience. And Cadmun knew that it was the scholar that came up short. “I will take your advice to heart, Kraghbar, thank you.”

Indeed, as he looked around at the gathering of fellow travelers he could see a wealth of experience that he lacked. Still, he would not allow himself to feel intimidated or downcast. Instead, he would take this opportunity to broaden his worldview, and learn from his new friends

And perhaps even make himself useful for the journey ahead.

At any rate Cadmun had quickly resumed being his normal chipper self once they arrived. He’d even greet the city’s curious (and occasionally suspicious) populace with a smile and cheerful waves as they gathered to watch. If any got too close, they just might end up peppered with questions about this toddart brewcraft he’d heard about…

Either way Cadmun was quick to greet Brogg once he’d recognized their generous savior from the day before. He’d even step forward to offer to shake the old toad’s hand, and hand shake or not he'd be nodding in eager agreement with both Leonora’s and Lady Jane’s words. “It is indeed good to be traveling with you again, Sir Brogg.” He paused to take one of the berries curiously. Mmm, quite flavorful, and the ‘pop’ added an element of pleasant surprise to it. “...And thank you again for your generosity, these are quite flavorful.”

Still he wasn’t here to sample sweets… He’d look to Leonora and Harper, the two who seemed most fit to lead this expedition, one for their experience on the water and the other for her connection to their quarry. “...Raft or lily I’ll not object either way. Wherever you feel I'm needed.”

Much like Cadmun, bless him, Fledidi wasn't too fussed about which vessel to depart on. It hardly mattered to her, as the thought that a tiny fairy and her assortment of traveling goods was hardly going to tip some scales, or capsize a "ship"... seemed ridiculous.

She smiled at the assembled locals and waved too, quite happy to burn off some more of her coffee-fueled energy. After that she'd smiled to Brogg and given him a little mid-air bow.

"Where would you like my gear, folks? I'm happy to hover around if it helps with the weight restraints and all that, hehe. I might fly ahead a short way, if you think that's safe, to kind of scout around."

Liam warmly greets Brogg when they see him again, extending a hand in friendship. He seems genuine in his happiness to see the toddart once again. Assessing the two watercraft, he makes a proposal to Kraghbar. "You and I seem to be the heaviest of the bunch, what say we split us up? One of us rides with Brogg, the other with Harper and the raft." He then addresses the women, specifically Harper as she is the most knowledgeable of water craft. "How much of these supplies do you think will fit on there, Harper, in addition to people?"

Kraghbar al-Gruun
left-aligned image

With no answers to the curious happenstance forthcoming, Kraghbar was more than happy to dismiss the topic from his mind in favor of more immediate concerns. One of which was procuring more of Brogg's freely offered juicy berries.

"Brogg, friend, you always know how to put a smile on this one's face!" The orc nodded to Leonora as helped himself to two pop berries from the offered jar, savoring the burst of flavor as he immediately turned his attention to the group's pile of supplies and the available vessels for their journey, looking between the lot before scooping up half the rations and carefully placing them into the raft.

"Makes sense to me." Kraghbar's response to Harper's suggestion had been to immediately put it into action, and he now stood before the latter half ot their given supplies, making some quick mental math regarding whether or not fitting the literal other half of their goods on to the lily pad would work weight wise. Remembering that his math skills were terrible, he instead opted to scoop up the remaining supplies in his arms and then start gingerly laying down packs one at an excruciatingly slow and careful time, afraid that if he overshot he would condemn the lily pad to a watery grave. "Fledididi, why don't you put your stuff on the boat? Looking like it can take more heavy stuff than the leaf. Still not sure how much stuff a plant based anything can hold. Wait, if boats are made of wood, then aren't all boats made of plants anyway...? Hmm."

The little moment of thought lasted the orc until he was approached with Liam about a proposal, and a reasonable one at that considering his own worries about weight combined with his negative knowledge of buoyancy.

"Going to stick with the boat today, Liam. This whole surrounded by water business is fascinating, but I feel more comfortable appreciating it from some sturdy ground, even when that ground's moving." The lily pad had certainly been quite sturdy on their trip to the city upon their arrival, but a more familiar wooden frame would be a great comfort to Kraghbar, and he was not afraid to admit it. All the doggy paddling in the world would not make him grow used to such large bodies of natural water as he had seen on this most recent leg of his journey so far away from home.

Brogg seemed to blush under such praise, "Oh your fair praise too much for a simple old toddart like myself. Well, I was told that some of you would like to hear some tips and advice to help you understand what you'll be dealing with during this trip, and I will do my best.

It sounds like you all have some idea of where your baggage must go, I will only say that my lily is the equal of any boat in the kingdom, so don't fear that it's any less capable of carrying loads that a good solid raft. Years of careful maintenance and oil have made it almost like wood in its strength, though it is still quite soft."

Coming down the walkway, Foulk, Yvonne, and Renfred stopped to offer their farewells.
"We will be leaving on our own journey to the Old Castle soon," Yvonne said. "We wish you safe travels on the road, may branch and bough pardon your passing."

"Just so! I know I'll be counting the days between our next meeting. May kind winds carry the fair maid of gossamer wings to jolly reunions and all that!" Foulk elbowed Renfred as if he was in on some joke, though the young missen just looked up at the lapire like he was a bit off in the head.

Overhead a piercing cry broke through the foliage, a farewell from Sir Keuron and squire Esylle as they took wing to their own lands.

Torbeth and Captain Wilcock had also come down, and Torbeth bowed low.
"It is to you that I entrust the safe return of a good friend. It is not right that I place such weight upon the shoulders of those I haven't known for much time, but I will repay the favor when the time comes."

Captain Wilcock grinned and squinted at the sky. "Might not want t' wait too much longer though, smells like there's clouds comin' up from the south-east. If ya make good time y' might make it into dock 'fore it hits." His grin didn't falter, "When we next see each other, let's bring some fine gifts of our travels. then we can see who the wind and waves favoured best!"
