Raft
left-aligned image
Glasses askew, black hair disheveled and dripping, his clothing sodden (again!), and well…more than a little banged up from that rough ride, Cadmun nevertheless put on a cheerful face for his compatriots as everyone took stock of their situation. He’d pat Kraghbar on the shoulder (or as close as he could reach on the big orc) consolingly. “...Aye, it’s a bit of a setback, but the important thing is none of us were hurt, or worse, swept away.”

The scholar adjusted his glasses, trying to ignore the persistent throbbing in his right shoulder as he nodded towards Fledidi and Harper. “...And we likely owe our lives to these two.. Between their efforts and Brogg's experience with the waterways we were likely saved from a far more severe drubbing.”

And then the conversation turned to monsters, and Cadmun was quick to change on a dime from supportive to cheerfully distracted. “...A goeroe? I’ve not heard of such a creature. Where...?” Pale blue eyes peered out over the waters, seeing if he too might catch a glimpse of the beast. Alas, perhaps too distracted by his injuries to act quickly enough, the moment was lost. "Fascinating. ...And slippery too."

Being thrown to the deck of the raft Jane scraped her chin on the rough wood boards. Will the deluge and waves rocking the raft like a cradle she could do little to stop any of the supplies from sliding over the edge unless she wished to join them. But as quickly as the storm started it stopped. She rubbed her chin with her hand and had a little bit of blood come away. It probably wasn't that bad.

The dwarf got to her feet and heading for the railing to look forlornly at the quickly sinking and drifting cargo. She tried vainly to reach out and grab one last little wrapped package but a wave sent it bobbing away.

At the mention of a Goeroe, the dwarf decided to back away from the edge of the raft. “A what? I’ve never heard of one of those… that sounds terrible Harper, why would anyone want to be around one,” Jane said looking carefully at the water. She wasn’t eager to want to see this Goeroe. Maybe they could pass without trouble

Brogg croaked in surprise, "A goeroe!? Nasty things I say. Give the beast a good scare and it should look for an easier meal."

He paused mid paddle and squinted into the water, "Ah, but try not to hit it, that might provoke it too much."

Leonora
right-aligned image

When Harper pointed out the creature, Leonora cautiously unslung her bow, and began stringing her short bow, not taking her eye off the Goeroe. Her caution faltered somewhat, however, when Liam began throwing insults at the beast, with little to no effect. The scene was hilarous, eliciting a hearty but well-meaning laugh from the half-elf. Putting a hand to her mouth, Leonora couldn't keep herself from snickering. 'Apologies, Liam,' she offered courteously. 'I am sure the creature is quite rattled by your performance. But, perhaps, you would let me try?'

Leonora tried to make herself look big despite her small stature. She nocked an arrow and, taking careful aim, launched the projectile- some five feet ahead of the approaching beast. 'Back!' she called out, waving her bow above her head to appear even larger. 'Come on, git!'

Kraghbar al-Gruun
left-aligned image

The orc seemed content to sit in his misery, pondering over the potential which was cut short by the troupe's watery trial, even as his companions offered him words of comfort to lift his spirits from their heavy-set depths.

"'Spose it could be worse." Kraghbar's response to Fledidi was despondent, his grey eyes still on the soaked foodstuff packaging in his hand. "Not much sadder in the world than seeing prepped food go to waste. No matter what the snack, some dedicated hands put it together for others to enjoy."

His gnarled, pointed ears perked up at the fairy's mentioning of lands full of sand, a pang of homesickness a sharp jolt to his temperament. Despite himself, a soft smile began to form on scarred over lips as he remembered Erensahr.

"The sands are more welcoming than you'd think, Fledididi, and their bounty plentiful. Especially scorpion venom! It can give any platter an excellent zest. Just make sure not to serve it to anybody with mouth sores. Haha... oh, poor, stupid Torhmed."

The grisly and hilarious memory of culinary demise widened Kraghbar's smile. Suddenly, the package in his hand was not all that heavy. With Cadmun further putting the whole ordeal into perspective, the orc was ready to cast off his grey cloud and look to the future.

"Lucky orc gets to travel with a bunch of smart folk that keep things focused on the path. I'd give you both tears of gratitude if I didn't think you'd had enough of being damp today." Instead he rose suddenly, his arms opening wide as it appeared he was instead threatening Cadmun with a heartwarming embrace, ready to put all that he had into making certain the human could feel the very depths of his gratitude down to his bones.

The appearance of the Goeroe threw off his plans as he noted the unfamiliar beast, Harper quickly clarifying what it was they were looking at and what the creature was about. And as attempts were made to intimidate the creature into leaving the lot of them alone, Kraghbar was of a different mind now that he had a better idea about what was stalking them.

"Aww, it's just a little hungry. It'll probably appreciate some appetizers." Probably with more excitement than was warranted, the orc gathered what waterlogged supplies he could and inched himself closer to edge to get a clearer view of the creature waiting beneath the surface.

"You have good timing, friend. These would have gone to waste otherwise. Enjoy!" And without much more fanfare, the damp rations were chucked gracelessly into the river for the creature to hopefully consume.

At first Liam and Leonora tried to scare the Goeroe off with shouting and lofting an arrow in it’s general direction. Then Kraghbar had a different tactic, feed it!

Jane watched in a bit of shock as the chef-orc started to toss the water soaked food stuff into the river.

“Kraghbar! If you feed then it is just going to follow us” Jane exclaimed trying to stop the half-orc from throwing more over the side of the raft. “It won’t leave us alone and then it might really eat one of us!” it must have looked a sight as the small dwarf hoping and standing on her tip toes trying to pull at Kraghbar’s arms.

She had fed a rock mole once as a child. It followed her home and then proceed to eat her brothers’ gem collection along with part of her father’s prized gem collection. The thing was only the size of a two pound anvil but managed to eat nearly two hundred specimen quality gems in a matter of a few days before her father found it, caught it and disposed of it. She had learned her lesson about feeding wild animals after serving a four year ban of no gem club or stone carving for that.

“Oh it’s going to follow us now isn’t it Brogg?”
Jane wracked her brain about what to do about the Goeroe.

Oh! She could try to talk to it. Yes! that might work. She hadn't been able to talk to the rock mole when she was a child but she had learned the spell after taking up the mantle of Silvaus.

"Please do not eat us. We wish to pass through your water without trouble. Kraghbar wishes to feed you please accept."
Janecast Speak with Animals (domain spell), good 10 minutes tried to speak with the Goeroe. She wasn't sure if it would work, but it was worth a shot.

Go Row
left-aligned image
"A go... what? A go row?"

It was then that Fledidi caught a glimpse of what everyone was raving on about all of a sudden.

"That thing's enormous!"

Yup. This felt like an appropriate time to get those wings beating and hover upwards a good few yards from the muddy water's surface. It couldn't gobble her up, if she was up here, right? As horrible as the possibilities might be, she couldn't resist a chuckle though as Liam dared try to scold it.

"Oh that's so horribly mean... and I'm not sure about..."

Too late, Kraghbar had already tipped some soiled foods overboard. "... offering it tribute."

Then Jane did the most unusual thing. She started directing her voice at the creature, making some really slurpy sounds.

Was there anything a fairy could do to help? Not immediately. Anything with a mouth big enough to eat you was worth staying away from. No offense to Kraghbar of course.

Leonora
right-aligned image

Frowning, Leonora looked from the orc to the fairy and back, then formulated a plan. 'Good idea, Kraghbar, redirecting the beast,' she said. 'But Jane's right; you're leading it towards us.'

She then looked over at Fledidi. 'All we need is a change of direction. Fledidi, would you be willing to take some food, and leave a trail for the Goeroe to follow, leading away from us?' She smiled, and shrugged. 'When we went hunting for smaller game, we sometimes made a trail with bits of food, rather than go look for the critter ourselves. More often than not, a beast would come along and follow the trail into a trap we'd prepared.' Nodding at the Goeroe, she elaborated. 'Same thing here, except instead of leading the beast to our trap, we lead it to anywhere but here.'

Hesitating for a moment, Leonora voiced her concerns. 'Don't get too close, though. I am reticent of asking even this much of a risk, but alas, you wings make you the only one not confined to the boat or lilypad.'

The goeroe's baleful eye looked at Liam, most unimpressed and possibly a little stung by his tone despite not understanding his words. It flinched and writhed, twisting away from the fired arrow, seeming more agitated now. It flicked away towards the raft. There, it seemed to be wary of the proffered supplies, but stuck around a bit.
Brogg wrinkled his nose, "It might... goeroe's aren't known for being scavengers though..."

It shifted and fixed its eyes on Jane, full of anxious curiosity, "Scared. Hungry. Annoyed. What's a Kraghbar? Pointy meals. Threatened. One speaks? I am Hungry. Weird food. I'll try it."
It swam forwards towards the spoiled food, a massive maw stretching wide to practically swallow it all up in one gulp.
"Food strange. I don't like it. Less hungry. Confused. Weird food speaks like Hungry. Confused. Must think. Food too noisy. Still hungry though. I want more strange food. Hmmmm... Can I eat you?"

Brogg blinked, "Now that's a nice ability, Lady Jane. I've always wondered what beasts think. What is it saying?"

Harper was all for feeding the wildlife, as long as the supplies were truly unsalvageable... However, she didn't have the opportunity to learn for herself if they would have been fine, if given the time to dry out. Or even to really process what her crewmate was doing, Before Kragbhar unceremoniously dumped them overboard. And offered them wholeheartedly to the creature.

"What the.... Don't send him over here. He'll eat the damned raft..." She managed to curse at the Orcish Chef as she began to paddle her way towards the safety of the others. If any place was truly safe next to a monster capable of swallowing them, raft and all, whole.

Go Row

Fledidi's eyes lit up. Leonora had an idea! A not-terrible one too.

"A crumb-line or whatever they call it! Yes! I had to use one once to lure a pesky injured cat out of a... anyway, I'm on it!"

The concept of doing something helpful, rather than just flying about waiting to witness her new dear friends gobbled up, was great in principle. There was a hard choice to make though. Take some food from the vessels, or upcycle that which was already bobbing around in the sloshy "waters". Honestly, it didn't look like the kind of monster that cared about best-before dates or tummy bugs. Thus, the fairy lifted a handful of the more buoyant once-edible supplies from the murk, and then flew closer to the Go-row. It was there that she dropped it a few yards away, on the side furthest away from the raft and lillypad.

"Yummy! Come and get it!"

Would that be enough? Somehow she had to make this new offering more... interesting than the rest of the supplies floating about. She waved a hand around imitating a fish, a bit like in some of those remote islander dances.

"This tribute here you surely should examine, alas alas, it smells like.... salmon!"
OOCCast Druidcraft on the dropped food, to make it smell like fresh fish. Rolled a huge 6 for deception or persuasion too, in case it is of use lol.

Jane was surprised that the Goeroe conversed with her. The glurping, water logged voice was strange in her ears as the magic translated it into something she could understand.

“It says it’s hungry. But it doesn’t like our provisions. I think it really wants to eat us or meat or something,” Jane answered.

“No you can’t eat me. Or anyone else up here. We just want to pass. We have to find our Captain. Please don’t eat us,” Jane pleaded with the Goeroe.

Kraghbar al-Gruun
left-aligned image

Kraghbar paused his counter-offensive against Jane's worry-born offensive when he saw the dwarven woman begin an honest to goodness conversation with the goeroe. And apparently getting a response to boot!

"Oh ho, it wants meat? Not hard to imagine, tasty meat is a real treat! Knew it was just a little hungry. Although..." The orc's fat fingers slowly reached back to his glaive, now eyeing the goeroe with much less benevolent intent. "Brogg, friend, any idea how gogo meat tastes? Thing looks big enough to make a proper meal or two."

Kraghbar no longer showed any hints of his recent despondence, and the joy he now displayed was tinted with a very hungry look, aimed straight at the big mouthed river beast.

"Jane, I don't think we should be discouraging it from giving that meal a go. All's fair in nature right? If it wants to try eating us, should be pretty fair to think we can eat it back if things don't go its way. Is letting the best hungry beast win not a fair proposal?"

Unfortunately such arts as talking to animals are beyond Cadmun’s abilities, leaving the scholar with little to do but take mental notes. Yet the scholar was surely taking a lot of them, finding Fledidi’s and Jane’s nature-based abilities fascinating to watch in action…and who knows? Perhaps he might learn a useful trick of his own along the way.

Something he was somewhat less excited about, however, was Kraghbar suddenly wanting to fight the creature. He reached up to pat the orc’s shoulder (or at least as far as he could get). “...It’s quite brave and generous of you to offer to help with our provisions, but we’d much prefer you uninjured and whole for the tasks ahead and uh…in general. Er…if you should feel so inclined that is. I mean…surely we can stock up at the village ahead?”
