FELA!
right-aligned image
SpiderHin, there was a point where everything connected in that big web, thick-stranded, with huge gaps between. Much too large and thick for you or the siren to be its flies.

On that web, the gnomes yanked, and a gargantuan spider-robot came. These back and forth web-strand-things are not part of that greater web. They seem to be cables for spiders to walk down zigzag, faster than the steps. But **** that. You have butt-floss and a route out of the whirlwind air. WHEEEEE DOWN YOU GO SO FAST.

Tempest, you cling, and your stomach drops much more slowly than you do, as if you have left it behind. Below you, dark rushes up, and the thick cables. You go down down down down down. This would have taken hours if not days on foot. Surely you will soon hit the center of the earth, where according to your mother, the great water wyrm gestates, and when it is finally born, the whole world will explode, for it is just an egg.

Then a pale, glorious light springs up toward you in the darkness. It is a column of silvery burning.

SpiderHin, This is a moonbeam spell!

You both then see that past it, there is a much more tightly woven web of much smaller cables. This is a web that would easily catch either of you, in terms of size. Balancing on it is a golden nightmare of a spider, big as a horse, with two strange evil needlhands. Fela has roped a piece of it and is riding it. The big golden dome at the back of it has telescoped open, showing you a compartment large enough, perhaps, to contain two medium creatures. The compartment is outfitted with chains and no windows.

OOC Fela began combat, she has not seen you but you see her. The spider sees you. If you beat its initiative, you can attack! If not, you can RP but no actions.

SPIDER FIGHT
right-aligned image
Fela, this is a golden moment. You throw your lasso perfectly i a glorious arch and loop it around a piece of the machinery. You are riding it—-amazing! Your feet are planted firmly, your grasp is excellent. You could do this all day. But.

The spider turns its needle hands toward you, and it discharges first one and then another needle right at you! Both of these needles land, one in your neck, one in your hand gripping the rope. It…stings? A little, sure. But you don’t even bleed. Oh, spider-thing, is that all you got?

Just then, a strange lethargy catches you, and your perfect stance wobbles and wibbles a bit.. You feel coolness invading your blood where the needles landed. You unleash Moonbeam on the front part, though, and it does seem to hurt it, though perhaps not as much as you had hoped.

You brace yourself for two more needle attacks, but they do not come. Instead, its attention seems pulled by something happening above you…Ah but you are so tired!

OOC: Ptwids you need to succeed on two very important DC13 con saves, or you have the poisoned condition. If either saving throw fails by 5 or more, Fela is also unconscious while poisoned in this way. If you do not fall unconscious, you can go again. You are absolutely in combat.

BINGLE
left-aligned image
Bingle GRAY! GNOMES! You have heard of this kind of gnomes. Perhaps Tumble was a surprise to you, but your father had a book called Gary Gonmes of the Nuderdrak. Bingle, you are in the Nuderdrak, YOU MUST BE, because that is where the book said the Gary Gonmes live.

You know they are fine craftsmen, especially with stone and metal, and they are VERY! VERY! SECRET! Your father had implemented many of their protocols in the village, actually, because the Nuderdrak iis full of danger, and they never want to be found. THEY ARE NOT FUN GNOMES, the book said. Not smiley, not jokey, not cozy or knitty or hummy. Dour and sour—-but mostly good. Mostly. MOST ARE GOOD IN THEIR HEARTS. This one, though, well he is working for a lef. Banx agrees, Lef name, a hnuderd precnet. And lefs in the Nuderdrak are called Dorw and they are heartless slavers and bad. Maybe most Gary Gonmes are good, but most is not all. You have never heard of The Ant Trap, so this must be a Nuderdrak thing.

Terad carefluly, whispers Banx. He is janking the lever that ought to make it go around, to no avail. Oh dear. The Spider idles. Halran swoops about, confused. The tobacco is pungent but not skunky, the cravat is silk, but dirty.

The Gary Gonme is not at all alarmed and says, Well, I hope his mruderous mother is dead and safeyl in the Demnoweb Ptis. But she is likeyl fine and mipatinet to see our haul. As for the rset…Waht care we for Sruface Shraks? We have pelnyt to worry us dwon here without mucking about with sruface messes. But he do like presnets. Nad making powreful firends. Come on then, follow me. He means in the HUGE spider you claim to have under your control, but you don’t actually. HEH.

Banx shows you the panel. Eight buttons in two rows of four. A lever that moves up and down but doesn’t make the spider go up and down. A thick knob. He shrugs, mystified.

Before this becomes awkward, a flash of silvery light appears in the far far darkness maybe near the center. Or at least very far away. 100 feet or more. The golden spider you evaded lights up and hums and turns toward the light. He turns and stares back into the darkness toward the center, and then says in a growl of urgency, Are those littel files at the cneter with you? Or did you come alone?

Well, this is really, really, so so so so bad. It's so bad! It's extra bad.

"He's Gary!" she whisperspits to Banx, "Gary! He might be okay, but his boss's mother is really, really, really really bad. So bad. And mipatinet! Mipatinet to see the haul which is -- us!" Bingle is also gray. Grey like a maple bark! Who cares.

But what if:
1. What if the boss himself is not like the mother. Maybe the boss hates the mother! Ithil’vorn Mlezzi’ir, do you hate your mother? Do you?
2. What if the gary gonme is a SALVE. If he's a salve, then they could extend a hand to him, offer him feremod, get him out of the Nuderdrak or to a different part that doesn't have salves.
3. What if none of that is true and Gary and Ithil’vorn Mlezzi’ir are both evil as Glasya's bosiasms, and this is their last chance to not get shuttled down into the Nuderdrak wrapped in mechanical spiderweb? And what if they should just kill the Gary Gonme really quick, as quick as possible, and figure out how to run the freaking spider, and climb the freak out of here, and go home, and hide in the woods? Falco doesn't really need a ship! They have a ship already! A good one!
Bingle's eyes threaten to roll back in her head from the sheer stress of it. Gary gonmes and drak lefs. Chittipaw's whiksers! She tries to buy them both a bit more time with figuring out the controls. If they can't get the spider moving, it won't matter if he wants them to follow him or kill him or free him or anything because they'll just be stuck here smiling nervously while the machine continues to loudly go nowhere.

"Yes, we will flolow you in a mitune. But one more wrod: We sreve a powefrul deliv. We can hlep you to feremod if you wnat to sotp being a salve to the drak lefs. If taht's waht you aer. Just knid of thikn about taht whiel I sak you tihs ohter quetsion: We seek a sihp called the Dsukmadien. Have you seen tihs sihp? It is knid of gerat and it mihgt be orepated by mosnerts. Sonud falimiar? Now csuse me wihle I trun on tihs sipder."

She kicks Banx in the ankle and hisses, "Let me see!"

There's the flash of silvery light and Gary asks her if they came alone.

"Yes," she calls over her shoulder from in the control cabin, "No! Um yes, the files aer our aliles. Pelase do not wrory about tehm. We all came totegher, no sihp, all files. Just files. No wrories, we are very nice."

There's got to be a control for moltening and demoltening things. Lever? Fine. She pulls it. There's got to be a way to go around -- the knob? She janks it back and forth. If you can't figure out by looking, you have to figure out by trying. She pokes the buttons one by one.

"Just a mitune!" she carols over her shoulder. "It's fine!"

A careful dance

He had t' admit, it were loads o' fun zoomin' down silken strands through th' dark. He'll need t' be rememberin' t' do this again another time when things weren't so urgent. Once again Falco wondered exactly how far away from th' Wailin' Maiden they was by now an' where approximately that might be. That thought would have t' wait as a glowin' beam o' moonlight, so far from th' sky, pierced through th' darkness.

After SpiderHin's many eyes adjusted t' th' light, he saw Fela! Only she were ridin' a horse sized metal spider what were more convincin' than th' big web-menders. Well, besides th' needle hands anyways. Nothin' natural 'bout those. He quickly spun down an' alighted on th' web 'nto a casual Hin stance what Fela might recognize if'n he could get close enough t' th' moonbeam.

He knew th' machine spider seen 'im so, as he moved, he waived 'is palps in th' air. SpiderHin swayed an' sauntered t'wards th' paladin an' her unlikely mount th' way a true spider might approach a potential mate. Th' black humor what were th' truth about what happens t' most spider suiters weren't lost on 'im. He cautiously advanced but circled around t' get a view o' th' opened abdomen an' maybe get a feel fer th' web. If'n he were lucky, 'is dance might jus' distract th' machine spider from Fela.

Dance of the Sexy Spiders
left-aligned image

OoOoo The Siren groaned like the time she tried a pirate's stew, chock full of sour lemon snails, slime-sick eels not baby spotted eels, and chunks of unfresh crab probably found attached to a fallen, dragging net. This drop didn't give her sharp pains, but her stomach - oh, her stomach. Lucky for her she hadn't eaten in….who knows how long. Time seemed to be turned about being so close to the center of the world... of the ocean!

The moonbeam was the most hopeful light Tempest had ever seen. It's been forever since they've seen such bright light, real light, even if its source was holy or magical. As she lifted her head, clinging onto Spider-Hin, her eyes immediately took in the horse-sized golden metallic spider that wasn't a spider, but mechanical....jointed and sharp. "Falco Starspider, isn't it incredible?" The blue Siren that had barely any real experience on land, who found suits of scalemail, silken teabags, and hand-hammered silver platters to be exquisite, couldn't believe the beauty of such a potentially deadly ….creature. Perhaps it guards the Egg.

Soon enough Tempest caught sight of Fela when StarSpider-Hin swayed curiously, performing a strange walk, and a delicate wire-walking dance. She clutched her arm to her stomach for a moment, then drew in a deep breath, which was so odd when under the deep like this. "Fela! FeEeeelLllAah! It's US! How glorious!!" For moment she waved elegantly, tail of her rope in hand before the Spider-Dancer moved to circle the sitting, needle-y giant spider. The Siren hunkered down again, clutching at the ropes, elated that her sister-at-arms was very alive and was also learning how to ride a giant spider of sorts. Won't Bingle and Banx be excited with such news.

Fela, down but not out
left-aligned image

"Wooohoooo!"

Fela can't resist a celebratory yelp as the rope loops up and over as best as she can place it. It's not like she's hidden from anything -- the spider thing was trying to shake her off, and now there's a massive column of light on it, a small pale sliver of Saliber's glory.

The celebration is short lived, as the needle-hands she had so smugly positioned herself to be just out of reach of change the rules on her, the cheating appendages shooting needles into her from afar, and suddenly Fela poisoned, nearly fell unconsciouswoozy-woobles and decides she better lie down, right here on the cool metal spider back, before she falls down. A deep breath, free hand tightening comfortingly on the rope, wrapping it tightly around her hand, and the worst of it has passed, somehow, and she can open her eyes...to see another spider descending from above. Oh great. Saliber, we better hurry up on this one to get ready for the next... shifting her weight just enough to slide her sword out, raising it up once, twice, and down against the flank of the spider like she were urging it on like a jockey, except her whip is metal heated and glowing with the righteous anger of a sun god, scraping and sparking and scorching against the metallic carapace beneath her.

Over the clanging metal noise she hears ... Tempest? Yes, only her siren could be so enthusiastic given these circumstances. She's not quite sure where or how Tempest found her own spider mount -- presumably she just told the spider what was what and the poor thing was powerless against the bottomless determination, a twisted version of the siren's song.

"Glorious is one word for it. Just -- help me get this thing out of commission before we're all locked up in it."

Actions, etc.
Dice here
Failed a con save so poisoned, barely avoided being unconscious.
Start of turn spider takes 11 damage from Moonbeam, half as much on a DC15 Con save

Movement: Fall prone, holding the rope
Action: Attack, hitting twice even with disadvantage, level 1 smite on each, 31 total damage magical slashing and radiant
Status: Poisoned, concentrating on moonlight, prone, sword in one hand holding rope in other so AC=16

Aura of Protection: +4 to saves for Fela and any friendlies within 10'

Bingle
left-aligned image
Bingle, the needle-finger spider scuttles off after Halran, out of the range of your dark vision. It is fast and lithe for a thing so large. Maybe as fast as Halran—at least on this web.

You stall and patter and send waves of gnomely manners at Gary Gonme. You are better at this than Banx, better than any swamp gonme ever could be, but he doesn’t scuttle behind anything or illusion himself into a bank of buttons. He stands by you making yeah face, backing you up.

You think you have to engage a directional button and maybe pull or push that knob for the lever to work? But which button is what direction? And push or pull? Before or after button? You need time and you have none. Gary makes a frown. He speaks in gnomish, strangely accented:

Nice girl like you, nice fella, what would you two want with a devil? I can see what a devil would want with you. And you aren’t a half bad liar, are you. No ship. Ha. he says “Ha”like a word, very flat. He briefly turns and stares off into the drak that is is too drak for you, but maybe not him. Your allies are acquitting themselves well, I’ll say that.

But you have a ship. Files can’t fyl.
If any other gnome said this, it would be a joke, a wordplay. Maybe it is, but the delivery is dour and flat, so flat. He ignores your offer of freedom and tells you nothing of his status. Salve or not salve? WHO CAN KNOW?

Files can’t fyl this far out to sea. Here, in Teh Nat Tarp, you can be only three things, gnome girl. A killer, a customer, or merch. You came in the merch door, but you took my Ship-weaver out of commission, so I suspect you would object with cost-ineffective violence to being merch. Two options left. You come to mruder Lord Vorn and take Teh Nat Tarp for this devil, or you came to shop. If the latter, Lord ‘Vorn will see you. Come down, have a seat in here with me and we’ll collect your allies before they hurt my Salve-Spniners enough to irk his Lordship. If the former, stop mucking about and let’s get to it.

He makes his hand into a shape, holding magic in it, you can see, but he keeps it there, a colorless and lightless weave-glow.

Halran bursts into your head. Jumbled images of Fela, cowboying around on top of a lassoed needle hand spider and going SMITEY SMITE with RAWR face. You see Tempest, too, riding another spider, flesh not metal, a great big hairy thing. Falco is nowhere, but the light you saw is a moonbeam spell. They are under siege from at least two of these needle hand bots—but the one Fela is riding seems hurt. Halran is allllmost as far as he can get from you and still share what he sees.

OOC Gary Gonme rolled a pretty great insight on you guys. You are in action economy. Talking is free, but it is very clear to you that he has readied an action.

SPIDER ON SPIDER ON SPIDER HOT ARACHNID ACTION
right-aligned image
Fela, you drop prone. The needle hands shift and flicker about trying to find you, and you unload the fury of Saliber with all the strength of your good sword arm. WHAM! WHAM! A piece of the carapace cracks, and you hear a click and a sick whir. You have hurt it, for sure.

The arms, bent backward, waver and seek. You are crouched low, but it gets the best bead it can on you and two more needles zing toward you. One pings off the metal beside you, but a second sticks deep in your flesh. Another wave of lethargy overtakes you…

Tempest, Falco lands you light and begins a weavery dancing toward the spider bot. Do you recognize this as courtship? If you do, you see the spider bot is not, forgive me, wired that way. It turns as he moves, keeping itself facing you.

From your perch atop star-spider-hin, you can see into the open hatch in its bloated abdomen. It is polished smooth and lined with cloth or cushion. Not velvet or silk, but definitely a kind of a padding. So perhaps you could speculate that this thing is friendly or a vehicle, but only until you clock the chains. One in each “corner” of the oval space. Short, attached, each with a manacle at the end. You imagine two medium creatures could fit in here, or one large one, or three of four small ones.

Transport in chains is decidedly not friendly.

Falco, this web is different from the one above: much more tightly knit, smaller cables, stretched t]taut, much, much stickier. Not that this bothers you.

As a spider, you kinda get the point of the layers: Big web above catches big big things. Very heavy. No wonder the GARGANTUAN spider-bot ignored the shirt. This finer web is to catch whatever falls through that big one. Both webs are custom made and each is very good for its own purpose—the proof is Fela, who fell foreeeeever, and is not hurt.

You wonder if there is another web, very fine indeed web under this, to catch whatever falls through this one? How many layers are sifed? This one is made to catch things that are maybe a little bigger than Fela all the way to things that are a little smaller than you-as-Hin.

You feel all kinds of activity happening east of you. SO much activity it is confusing. At least two more spiders, this size, but also a big big weight. A bending? A huge bending? Maybe the GARGANTUAN spider is on the web, but if so, it is entirely still.

From this area of confusion, a pattern of vibration emerges and surges toward you, fast, one of the two moving spiders you sensed. It feels a little lighter but similar to the one Fela is riding. You look that way with a few of your extra eyes and see another needle-handed bot, lighter because it has no Fela, emerging into your range of dark vision from the east. A little bird flies above it. Halran! Looking for you?! Or fleeing? You do not know

Tempest, you see Halran, too. Perhaps you do not notice the second spider, though, at least not until it shoots a hot needle at you. One buries itself in your arm, filling you with sickness and lethargy, and you see another deep in the meat of Falco’s hairy foreleg.

OOC: You are joining an ongoing combat. Fela is on top of the spider, so you are not within ten feet of her unless you move into melee range, which you can do on this turn if you choose. You are in action economy, but we are going to do theatre of the mind and no charts because, Indonesia. Please track your conditions in your action block.

Fela could have repeated her save at the end of last turn, so she can do it at the beginning of this turn for the current condition. She can also try to save against ANY poison at the end of this turn. Spider had disadvantage because of prone but still hit with one needle, so after you save, make ANOTHER dc13 con save, and if you fail by more than 5, she will go unconscious. Pass and you slough off any poison you have. I hope this is clear but feel free to ask questions in discord.

The spider has taken 43 damage and is for sure listing, but does not yet appear “bloody.” The other spider is undamaged.

No damage, but Falco and Tempest must each also make a DC 13 con save or have the poisoned condition, If you fail by more than 5, you also fall unconscious. The Wolf Spider is sadly not immune or resistant to poison. I gave the spider that joined in disadvantage against Falco as WEB SENSE gave him a warning, but these guys are rolling like little gods.

Th' metal spider weren't much impressed by 'is seductive dance. SpiderHin knew th' steps was right but somethin' else were off. Maybe it weren't interested with Fela clangin' 'round on it's back. That had t' be it. Th' web were a flurry o' subtle vibrations an' also one muted spot as if it were stretched with weight. Maybe th' weight o' th' massive web-tender an' two gnomes?

Th' smaller mechanical spider, an' then another, ignored th' slow swayin' dance as if they could only mind one specific task. As far as spiders, they was about as convincin' as Biffers' were t' livin'. Even their fangs were wrong. But when they lifted those funny arms an' shot fangs out like bolts from a crossbow, SpiderHin realized their bite had reach. He knew that itchy tingle what burned its way in were venom.

One eye spied th' swift flash o' color indicatin' Harlan before it closed. It were startin' t' feel so tired in here with all th' walkin' an' crawlin'. At least they'd all be findin' each other soon. That were a comfortin' thought t' SpiderHin as he lowered down an' folded 'is legs. Falco settled int' th' soft, hammock-like webbin' an' shrugged th' spider off t' have 'imself a quick lil nap.

Going, Going…
left-aligned image

"I saw manacles! We aren't lowly pirates, for we ought to be honoured GUESTS, foolish minions...WHAT. How Dare..you!" All Tempest wanted to do was have a loud conversation with Fela who had just fallen down as she was being needled. Do these metal creatures not see that they are in the glorious presence of at least a wondrous blue, Elven-eared, tiger-ish striped woman with qualities more perfect than the most beautiful of rare pearls? And riding a hairy spider, which has never been seen before. Ever. This was a true way to make an entrance, yet….they were being attacked instead of courted to join them (whomever 'them' may be) in a parlor or court for vibrant discussions of the day. Perhaps they are in real bodily danger. Watching Fela survive this ordeal was inspirational; why did these metal beasts not convey such bravery and nobleness to their mistress who would clearly be in awe and have a table set with fine wine.

This was not how Tempest envisioned the Center of the Sea and World. Where was The Fanfare? It certainly was not in the hot needle that was jammed into her arm, making her head cottony as the poison pumped through her in a sickly discomfort, threatening her abilities to jump, or even stand. Spider-Hin was weakening as well under her as he lowered himself to the Wrongful Webs. And then she saw in the radiant sacred moonlight the bright, welcoming and sky-blessed colors of Halran. As her muscles ached so unusually, and a weight pushed upon her very being through the needle, the sight of what she believed to be goddess-touched allowed her the strength to growl and then roar out, "We are NOT prey!" A delicate dance of electricity erupted around her needled arm and lightning forked off at the offending Spider.

right-aligned image
The Siren was most upset, especially as a sickness kind of warmth flowed through her body. The Spiders would have been excellent vehicles to ride upon, but…the thought of chains just haunts her. She's seen chains before on ships and they were never for simply keeping crates from sliding around. No, Tempest was pretty sure they weren't there to keep the passengers from toppling about the Spider's innards. Knowing that there were two spiders, and Spider-Hin falling under the sickness, she called upon Aerdrie Faenya's protective nature, asking for the bright, radiant spirits to gather around her in a wild, circular dance.

Silvery-blue flying, spiked…almost feather-like winged sea creatures bobbed about the Siren and Spider-Hin with their whippy tails, glowing in a pure radiance, as odd as they were gliding on the air. Their circle stretched outwards to include the metallic spiders in their dangerous spinning about.

Drawing in another breath, wishing she were in the water, Tempest raised her hand and called forth her ethereal trident, floating it toward Fela to try to attack the enemy she was currently laying low on. She felt almost spent, but that fire for freedom and survival burned clear through tiring eyes. "Falco Spiderstar…hold on."

"Oh, taht sihp! Taht sihp! Yes, yes taht sihp. I menat did we have a sihp in the tarp. Which we dnot. Yes, we came here in a sihp! It is gerat, spuer gerat, but it is full of nuns and zmobies. But unsacthed! Amlost like new. And it has a blalitsa! If you wnat it, you cloud porbalby have it wehn we get the Duksmadien. Yeah! We jsut need the zmobie and nuns. Wnat the sihp? It's yorus. Jsut hlep us. Pelase."

Why should they not trade? A ship for a ship? They were going to scuttle it, after all. They can find something else to lure the siren, when it comes to that. And if the Slatmrash folk want to know what happened to Burt Beezlebub's ship full of constructs, they can tell the tale of the Ant Trap and it will be a good one! And with the added benefit of being true! She goes on and elaborates about the beauties of the ship, the fanciness of the riches on board, and all the rest, taking care to remind Gary that it is not just sitting there ripe for the picking, but manned and defended.

Meanwhile Bingle and Banx climb into the cockpit with Gary. He seems fine. Fine enough to take them to where Halran is at and then after that? Is he fine enough? Hm. They could have the big spider, the tool spider, and all the little needle spiders, and attack Lord Vorn with a spider amry!

"We dnot wnat to mruder aynone," she says, thinking about mrudering Gary a whole lot. "We wnat to make a dela with Lrod Vron."

Look at the cotnorls! she messages to Banx. We may have whiffed on the webinator, but see if we can figure out how to drive this one anyway!

She's not specifically planning to mruder Gary, but anything could happen. He could get tired and need someone to take over driving. He could be killed by falling rocks. Is it so wrong to want to know how the spider works, just! in! case?!

Fela: was I like that?
left-aligned image

Lying low on the spider is comforting, familiar. Riding wasn't really Her Thing, not like some girls who lived in the saddle, braided their horses hair, wove flowers through the griffon's feathers. But riding was part and parcel of being a Watcher, a Springer, which was Her Thing, and so though she had no natural affinity for it she'd done enough of it, it had soaked up enough light from her calling that the warmth of it radiated out to her still, even when the mount is cold and metallic and trying to poison and imprison her.

A few breaths there, and she feels the poison -- not melt away, but dilute, be pushed out to the edges of her. Tempest is yelling, entitled, expecting a fawning welcome, like the one Fela had gotten in Glotten, half a lifetime or just over two weeks ago, depending on how you counted. Had Fela expected that, demanded it? She couldn't remember, but she certainly hadn't found it strange. But it feels strange now, seeing Tempest's reaction -- though maybe it's the outrage at manacles. An important tool of civilization, manacles.

But: they're still in a battle a day's journey down whirlpool steps in the middle of the sea. Head cleared, Fela rises to her feet, still clutching the rope for balance, the better to get leverage and angle to crack her sword again against, and then against again, the spider's carapace, repositioning Saliber's light just so.

Standing, she sees Tempest join the fight, but her mount -- Falco, she yells. Of course! -- apparently drugged out of it. "Wake him up before they chain him up!"

Actions, etc.
Dice
Shook of poison and passed the new con save as well.
Start of turn Spider takes 17 radiant damage from moonbeam, half as much on a DC15 Con save

Movement: Stand back up, still holding the rope
Action: Attack, hitting twice, no smites, 16 magical piercing damage
Status: Concentrating on moonbeam, upright, sword in one hand holding rope in other so AC=16

Aura of Protection: +4 to saves for Fela and any friendlies within 10'

The “Haul Together” Part of the Song
left-aligned image
Oh, Falco, the injustice! You offer your delightful courtship dance and get served a roofie in return. Well, Spiders are terrible dates, you know this.

You sink into the web and stick flat on your belly facing the enemy, arms and legs outstretched into a spider-shape, but before this can bother you much, you fall deep into dreams of being poisoned—oh but this when you were poisoned before, before, when it was heady and wild, lily-scented, an altogether stranger brew, and there she was, close, her breath sharp and sweet like fresh cut mint leaves, her small shrewd face so avid, her wild eyes. Is she here?

No, she is lost Feyside, but the last time you danced, you were with her falling endlessly through stars; bizarre courtship mixed with poison is her vibe, so perhaps this is why some memory of her finds you:

You dream the Dusk Maiden. Crewed by monsters. As she showed you, as she warned you, saying to charge in blazing would spell your doom. You see: a wide-mouthed thing with visible smell lines dragging a mop across the deck. A huge gelid cube with hats and bones and hooks inside it. A beautiful small-framed man-elf with deep gray skin wearing Captain Keirnan’s bloodstained hat over his braided white hair. You think of elves as stupid-tall, but this one stands not even two feet over Hin-size. The door to Cap’s cabin is boarded over, chained, locked, and beyond that, more misshapen forms are moving in darkness around the masts, pulling ropes with hands and claws and flippers.

In the dream, even though you're sick and stuck, you know that you were right to take these stairs. Your ship is down here in the deep deep deep darkness. Almost time to get your girl, Bramble says in your head.

She means the Dusk Maiden. Doesn’t she?

right-aligned image
Tempest, the nerve! No pageantry, no manners, no reverence. Do these things not know —well, not who you are. What you are! Here, with water all around you in a whirl, you ought to be revered. This is sea, and here you rule. Or is it sea? Webs and stairs that go forever? Maybe your kind is unknown. A shocking thought. The world has been so small. A vast ocean where you own a piece, a nice island where your father lives. The town, so busy and full, surprised you. So much people, talking as if there are many-many such towns! SO MUCH PEOPLE. Your world has been 3, and sailors at intervals. Now it seems the whole thing is much vaster than books could adequately express, than you ever imagined.

The Wolf Spider under you begins to surge down and sink, smallening, turning back into a deeply sleeping Falco. He cannot move you across the web to get close enough to the spiderbot Fela is riding to react with your wrathful lightning. You are about fifteen feet away from it. You serve up a heaping scoop of spiritual guardian glory, and the spider writhes as your creatures fan it with their webbed winglets.

Alas, a function of that writhing means your spiritual weapon aims at a place that the spider no longer occupies.

The other needle-hand is a solid fifty feet away, just within the range of your dark vision.

Can you keep your balance? Your bare feet are trying to find purchase on his back, even as it changes under you from a bristled dome to a Hin a fancy coat.

Fela, you know that if someone will give Falco a good shake, he will wake up, ,and you say so. Then you rise up. It’s hard. Yes, yes, Springers ride, but are Springers circus performers? Not hardly. You have seen advanced paladins stand on their griffins to shoot longbows. But in those cases, the griffin is co-operating, holding steady in a six-second glide so the knight can sit safe back down.

This spiderbot is not co-operating.

In fact, at this moment,it chooses to focus all its efforts on especially not co-operating. It jitters and jukes, skitters and swoops, spins and bobbles, trying hard to dislodge you. As it turns, you see that over by the second spiderbot, a third arriving. That feels REALLY bad, so bad, but—then you see—It is not the same as these needle-hands. This is an open-domed similar spider, with multi-tool hands.

left-aligned image
Bingle and Banx are riding inside. A gray-skinned, sour-faced gnome is driving it, and your small wizards are unchained, and seated behind him. Banx has his eyebrows together, tense, and Bingle has that manic smile that means she is three seconds from a leap and grapple or a mruder, but the gray gnome is talking to them laconically in gnomish, very calm, and they appear unharmed.

Bingle, Gary Gonme smells like laundry you washed in the creek but then forgot to hang, and it sat there in a wet pile in the basket for a week. He has a bench seat behind his driving seat where you and Banx both fit. He reaches for a green lever to his left, but then hesitates and does not pull it. Bteter keep the lid open so you can tlak to your lalies, and they can see you, yes? he says.

The controls for driving are very like the manual ones on the BIG Weaver. Knob pulls out. The top row of buttons re-angle the horizontal direction it as it runs FAST FAST over the web. Gary never touches the bottom row. He presses the lever forward, only forward, with his other hand. You feel pretty confident you could now use the controls to move a spider with controls like this safely forward across webbing.

You see the battle, looming up grayscale from the darkness, before you hear it because the whirlpool is loud. Falco is unconscious (or dead?!) (AGAIN!?) stuck facedown on the web, and Tempest is trying to stay balanced on his back. She is surrounded by flowing blue spirit guardians, her glowing trident whanging anway at a needle-hand spider like the one you saw before—oh hey, Fela has roped it and is trying to ride it as it skitters and bucks. There is a second one, the one you saw originally, and it is very near you on the web. It is aiming one needle hand at Fela and one at Tempest, but when it sees Gary Gonme, it holds, hands poised, humming.

Gary says, Hm. Well, they havne’t wercekd naything too bad. Yet. But Lrod Vron wno’t love it if they fulyl ruin that lsiting sipder. Ti’s xepesnive.

OOC HI! I am soon getting on a plane and will be home after 30+ hours of airports and flying. YIKES! I am going back to remove all the secret tags if you want to know what happened whilst you were away from each other. SORRY FOR THE SPOTTY POSTING. Internet has been challenging in Indonesia and I have been SO DIVING SO MUCH and then yesterday SO SICK. Ate a bad thing? Fine now! Best trip of my life.

I plan to get back on schedule; next DM post incoming Tuesday after 7 am.

The spider FELA is riding has taken 75 damage and is for sure past “bloody.” The other spider is undamaged. Good guys are up. You are still in action economy, but before you go!

Plaid, I need a dex save from Tempest to stay standing on Falco. DC 13 and she surfs as he transforms and stays on with her feet planted on his back. If she does this, she CAN use her reaction to wake him as stamping should not take a whole a whole action. If she fails, she falls, but only the lower half of her body is stuck (she can still use her hands for casting or waking Falco as an action), if she fails by more than 5, she is flat on her back stuck for reals. She can use her action to use str/athletics to try to get unstuck… DC 16 because she is medium and in medium armor. (A breast plate I believe)

P~, the spider used its action to try to buck Fela off, as she seems very poison resistant! You can dex or str save, as you choose, to stay on, DC15 or she falls, but only the lower half of her body is stuck, and she still has her sword and is beside the spider, but if she fails by more than 5, she is flat on her back stuck for reals
Same str check dc17 because she is medium in heavy armor.

Goons, if Falco gets woken up, you can try to carefully peel his hands and head free of the webbing without dislodging Tempest with a str/athletics check, DC 14 because he is light and in light armor. Tempest can help but this is an action.

Trying to take a great mental image of the cotnorls, and also take in exactly what's going on with Fela and Falco and Tempest, this is a lot.

Bingle leaps up on the bench and begins waving one arm and shrieking, burying her other fist in Banx's hair for stability. Fela's on the spider. Falco's on the ground. Hrut. Maybe dead.

"It's US! Fela! It's okay it's US! Tempest! Look! This is our friend Gary! He runs the spiders around here. He knows we're customers, not merch! NOT MERCH!!!!!"

She thumps Gary on the musty shoulder and says, "Oh, look, she's just ptuting it thorugh its capes, not hradly dagamed at all, and you can rset asusred Banx and I are going to hlep you fix it! We'll asbotulely hlep you. We can all be trermendous firends I'm srue! Can you just pick up taht Hin off the web? He is the firendliset of all!"

Into Fela's mind she messages: After that giant spider this guy came. He works for an elf named Lord Vorn! This is the Underdark! We can trade for our ship.

Wake Up…
left-aligned image

"Falco! Don't unspider.." Tempest untangled herself, slipping up to a standing position as the coarse layer of hair shifted into that of an elegant coat. Her movement was surprisingly fluid, finding her bare feet positioned just so between the small of the Hin's back and parallel between his shoulder blades. The Siren imagined she was on the rigging of a ship balancing between ropes and masts, unwilling to fall as she balanced with a grace about her. Her gaze shot up to look again at Fela when she shouted directions, letting her know that Falco wasn't simply taking a quiet breather, but was out-out, eyes-shut-asleep.

Tempest's eyes grew wide as her toes clenched along her companion's back before bouncing on the balls on her feet. With a bit of a bounce, she scoOotched forward to thwack Falco head with her toes. "Aye, aye, Fela MarkWig Springer!" She called, gesturing sharply with her hand to try to strike the Mechanical Buckin' Spinning Needle Spider that Fela was somehow riding like a pro. Admirable. the Siren thought before focusing her efforts on the unspidered Druid. "Up, Falco! Wake-up! Captain Falco! You must be fit for duty; do not become food!" Bending her knees, the Siren leaned over and started to tug at his right arm, curling her fingers around the fabric of his sleeve, determining if she enjoyed the texture or not, before pulling with more consideration once again. "Time for you to be free." With narrowing eyes, and a fiercer expression, the Siren glared at the needle arm of the Spider closest to them as it whirred and stilled, probably positioning itself and deciding who to poison first. She too, would position herself best she could so her shielded back would face the metal beast if possible.

Tempest's eyes then followed the shadow-grays upwards until she noticed the looming, hulking Spinner Gargantuan with Bingle and Banx and an Unknown fellow with them. Oh! Bingle was waving! Falco was correct that they would find a way, and indeed they have done just that. Her beautiful and dangerous flying brilliantly blue sea dragon spirit nudibranches spin about tighten to ten feet in their guardian dance just in case Bingle jumps to slay one of the needle spiders. There was no doubt in her mind that the noble Gnome would do exactly that, spinning effective, deadly magic from her fingertips if she so desired. "Falco! Great and Brave Lady Wizard Bingle Curiosa and equally as Brave and Ice-flinging Banx have arrived."

Strange awakenin'
right-aligned image

There were a heady brew o' toxin flowin' through 'is veins. Falco had been all five flavors o' f--inebriated at some point in 'is life an' this experience weren't quite like anythin' before. But there were some soft-edged fuzzy familiarity here. It were like when he offered a part o' 'imself up amongst a sea o' stars an' afterward, dreamed true. It were wild poison an' abandon what showed 'im th' way then so why should now be any different?

She came th' same as before, th' Dusk Maiden, with monsters an' abominations stainin' her decks. Th' chains 'n' boards o'er th' Captian's quarters a bold proclamation that Garrick still lives. Why else would it need such sealing? Only this time, it felt closer somehow. This is where they brought it! Th' Starless Sea.

Now Bramble was with him too, no longer stuck in th' Brineweave, an' whisperin' in th' way what sounds like th' wind through reeds, th' hiss o' snakes, an' a chorus o' nighttime in th' swamps. Almost time, she affirmed. She were pullin' on 'im an' shakin' 'im t' show th' way t' find 'is ship an' then th' Destiny t' open th' way t' find her. Th' Dream must've been thin enough fer 'em t' both reach out across spaces. A fragile thing what were swiftly unravelin'.

Shadows, dim light, an' mechanical sounds flooded 'is senses. That, an' siren-sized feet on 'is back. Now he remembered, he was th' spider. But somethin' happened with th' metal ones an' now he can't move. Falco were paralyzed! That's what they do, spiders. Only, he could feel Tempest on 'is back nudgin' an' pullin' 'im awake so he couldn't be paralyzed, jus' stuck. "It's here, she told me," he blurted out 'nto th' dark.

Thanks t' Tempest's application o' not-so-gentle counterpressure, Falco were able t' free 'is hands an' even managed t' release 'is face from th' web 18 Athleticswhilst keepin' 'is sideburns fully attached. When she announced th' arrival o' Bingle an' Banx, he smiled an' craned 'is head back t' say, "I knew we'd eventually come t'gether. All o' our stars share a similar path t' some unknown constellation an' this be th' way." O' course, he were still stuck t' a giant web far below th' deepest depths o' th' sea an' maybe still a wee bit high on spider venom. But maybe, jus' maybe, he gleaned some piece o' truth from 'is visions beyond th' stars.

Fela, furious
left-aligned image

Fela had seen riders more skilled than her ride standing up their horses saddles at fairs. Heck, she'd seen Springers do this on griffons, high up in the air, just for the heck of it. But those had been better riders than her, riding mounts they were familiar with it.

So though she thinks she's ready for the spider's bucking, she doesn't really understand what's about to happen. Her feet fly up into the air, the rope yanks her back down, hips crashing against the metal shell and bouncing her back in the air, and again, and again, and the next time she pulls her legs in, curled into a ball, and somehow her feet land on the shell and springs out of the ball and is on her feet again, battered, shaken, angered, but not substantially hurt.

The adrenaline makes it hard to take everything in. The other spiders. Tempest dancing on Falco's back like an angel on the head of a needle, Falco who's awake and talking about "it's here" and paths and constellations and "this be the way". The other spiders, a needly one looking ready to shoot at her, and the big one from above, with Bingle yelling out at her about being a customer and not 'merch', whatever that was. Falco's destiny, Bingle's commerce: both seemed to jumping ahead a bit to Fela, who's expected to die several times.

She edges the moonbeam back over so it's just scraping the edge of the spider, holds her sword up high to strike down, and hollers. "Friends?! We've been stabbed and drugged and if Gary there doesn't make the spiders play nice and start explaining then, then,..." struggling for words, Fela just waves her sword for emphasis. "THIS be the way. The customer is always right!"

Actions, etc.
Dice here

Start of turn Spider takes 9 radiant damage from moonbeam, half as much on a DC15 Con save

Movement: Stay up, still holding the rope
Action: Hold action to attack if spider doesn't chill. 1 hit for 7 damage
Status: Concentrating on moonbeam, upright, sword in one hand holding rope in other so AC=16

Aura of Protection: +4 to saves for Fela and any friendlies within 10'
