What's the word on a co-DM for this? Wanna do an ad? Want me to? Announcement style or true ad style? Open it to the site for official prizes? Whataya think?

I'd say we should get a co-DM first and then see if thar person is up for the challenge of running an arena for the whole site. Given the nature of such events, I could foresee lots of newbies wanting a chance in the arena, and while that is not necessarily a bad thing, it could mean a lot of work for a DM.
I'll make an announcement in your game and mine, looking for a co-DM. If that doesn't work, I'll ask you to take the request further into the public.

That's right 1 through 16.
Held in a public arena, they won't turn away anyone who has the entry fee, just because they're not too bright. Low levels might get clobbered but preliminary events will pit together only those contestants with similiar rankings.
The initial challenges are not contests between contestants, but varying tests of skill. PCs will gain experience as they compete.

I need a certain risk factor in these games. For those players in the campaign proper, the risk is built in. For them, every moment in the arena is 'real'.
Players who have permission from their DMs to gain XP and win or lose items in this arena will also have a risk factor.
I think that for now, for players who do not have their DM's sponsorship and are not joining this campaign, no XP gain will be allowed. Since, if they lose items or die in the arena, there is no great loss there.

What do you think about opening this up site wide but restricting it by saying that the character has to have been played in an active campaign for the last 3 or 4 months consecutively?
That will increase the pool but also keep it manageable because people won't want to risk certain characters and/or won't have as many viable characters - plus no one is making a character just for the arena (which is usually what floods such things) as well as has some RP ability so this can be the "more than hack n slash arema".

Some of us have "ex" characters. would you be open to allowing them to be used? Im not sure what the risk/reward would be....

also, would low level characters be destroyed, or would they have a short.... if so, id both like to bring in my character from Krowout's game, and allow my players in my campaign to participate... (but they are all levels 1 and 2 now, as its a relatively new one)

You could do it on DXDV2's world, if there's a problem with other DM's. I've got a portal to everywhere somewhere in my game.

I've often thought of Levitus making a surprise appearance in Corwyn's realm, and he's already in Krowout's game.

And where do you think Mannow gets some of his nifty technology?

Sigil and Union are already documented in Planescape and ELH respectively, so planar travel between alternate Material Planes is quite common with those cities in your game.

I've been thinking I've bitten off more than I can chew with DXDV2 and it's reality-spanning plot. And since two of the best DMs I know are already major characters in it, I'm hesitant to allow co-DMing with you two...

Mebbe Mirtos wants to give it a go...

I'm really wary of the newbie factor as well. I've shed quite a few of them since I joined this board..

Sounds cool, but lets change it up a bit.

However, consider that I want to see role-playing among the contestants and there must be risk and reward as well. In order for such a character to be considered, you will need a backstory, personality and physical description. There are monastaries in my campaign, but the character need not be from my world, but from any plane were there is access to other planes. Your character's backstory and personality will allow me to more easily select your starting level, but if you create a convincing enough story, place the character at whatever level you prefer (max 16 in this arena contest).

Very, very nice Corwyn. Thank you. It will probably take me up to a week to fine tune this guy. I've got Krowout's necromancer to finish up, which is an area I've never delved in before and is thus requiring some homework ^_~. I have an idea for his background/character/etc but I want to digest a bit more of your game first. Are they any racial/class restrictions?

Are we allowed to create our own places/lands/cultures/etc? i.e where do you draw the line?
Monastries? Tell me more, please.
Are there maps, country/city/place descriptions anywhere?
Is this generally fuedal/middle ages time frame, with magic dusted in, like LOTR? (asking because I noticed the gun question)
Creation of new monastic order, or possibly religion (will use your pantheon)?
Anything else I should know?

BTW, how many players are there in this campaign? By ooc and threads it seems like a baker's dozen or more.

  • By all means create a land or culture. If yours fits in the detailed parts of my world I may make changes to your version (or my own world) to make it seamless. If it is beyond anything I have, I'll out it outside of the known areas or in another dimension of plane of existance.
  • Monastaries - So far there were two that were detailed. A shoalin-like temple in the mountains that taught the 5 animal styles and then there is the Dragon Clan (also in the mountains). Generally a traditional monastary would be easy to insert in any campaign.
  • Map of the continent. Currently all active players are in this area, but the world is not restricted to the detailed portions of the map, or even the continent. Additionally, interplanar travel is possible anyway. An alternate dimension of the prime material plane could very well be the Grey Hawk setting or any DM's homebrew setting. Specific cities range from traditional fuedal towns such as Cedar Grove and Corsinth to more advanced places like Bastion City (where it has indoor plumbing and advanced irrigation and sewage removal) and the most extreme being Tashagang itself (where the arena is and where they have electicity in some places and buildings as high as 15 stories made of glass and steel). Still, even in Tashagang the most common means of transportation is the carriage, the horse or your own feet.
  • Time frame - it is the year 3161. In my backstory, the common era ended in the year 2325. The calender war restarted twice more. Therefore contining from today, it is almost 5000 years in the future. The Setting.
It is a world were man constantly struggles to ressurect technologies of the ancient past against the will of the gods. Dragons and other creatures as well as magic itself was introduced specifically to thwart technology, but yet still science develops and grows. Large cities have skyscrapers of glass and steel and combustion engines are common enough that most peasants would not balk at the sight of a horseless carriage. Artificers uncover ancient secrets of advanced science and technicians work their lives trying to recreate modern equipment. Items such as matches, lighters, flashlights, swiss army knives and kevlar armor are common enough, but the more advanced items like motorcycles and firearms are rare. Mostly advanced items such as power saws or refridgerated trucks cannot be completely salvaged and are a mixture of science and magic. Gasoline is not as common as motorcycles for example.
  • If you create a religion, or monastic order you have no limitations unless you want to base it directly in my campaign setting. Again, you can be from an alternate dimension or another plane. If you put it on Cairn, use the pantheon listed in the last post of 'The Setting' thread. A specific monastary could have developed anywhere on Cairn so if you want for example, to belong to the 'Order of the Eagle Clan', I'm sure I can find a place for that temple. Like any realm the very nature of the monk makes it a less common class. The average peasant would know less about the nearest monastary than he does about the heirarchy of a distant kingdom.
  • Anything else you should know? The master would say, 'Everything and nothing at all'.
  • Currently there are indeed 13 players but the number changes often.

Good luck
