How I got into D&D!

Well, to begin with i grew up reading a lot. Historical fiction, westerns, science fiction and fantasy--the reading was the fertile ground for role playing games and i read about them, too. I first played Melee! in the mid-eighties and even bought Paranoia (which I never played). Later I played some role playing games by snail mail, but got busy again and let that lapse. Children and career intervened for many years. I played WoW for several years and followed that by playing Skyrim.

Recently my son-in-law was talking about playing D&D with a few of his friends and that stirred my interest, again. So, I did a few searches online and found RPG Crossing and here I am. I've been reading the D&D 5e players handbook and am ready to try play by post.

With the best (story- and atmosphere-wise) computer game series in existence: The Baldur's Gate series. Damn, I still play those games more than 15 years laters. True masterpieces. And I guess you could also make an awesome tabletop or play by post campaign out of it, but it would only work with players who never played the games, of course.

Yogscast

Yes, Yogscast.
A while ago Yogscast had 3 seasons of Yogsquest.
I know that they did not play d&d per say. However, it made me interested in watching tabletop rpgs.
I was a bit of a closet fan, never learning how to actually play. Then me and my friends just jumped into 5e.
I only started recently. Plus, I'm trying shed my new user tag.
Just for luck:

First was TMT d20 when I was a kid, then played AD&D a bit and stopped. When VtM came out I got back into gaming. I would like to revisit D&D one day.

I got into role playing because a boy I fancied at uni was a DM.
Nearly four years later and we've written our own D&D game together!
(And yes, I did manage to snatch him as a boyfriend :P)

I got into it because I watched this YouTube video, just recently. I finally saw RP for what it is - storytelling! I wanted to learn more about it, and I stumbled upon Critical Role. Needless to say, I'm hooked and can't wait to play more!

Mostly thanks to playing computer RPGs, like Morrowind, as a child and seeing DnD referenced in pop culture, like Freaks and Geeks, Dexter's Laboratory and Community.

I always enjoyed reading fantasy and playing game books. Remember the ones from the 80s? I was fond of Lone Wolf. Favorite movie as a kid were Conan the Barbarian and Excalibur and Dragonslayer. One day I came across a book called 'Saga of Old City' by Gary Gygax. The adventures of Gord the Rogue. His journey from urchin beggar to powerful adventurer with cool magic items and barbarian and druid friends. It had Gord's ability scores in the epilogue. This Gary Gygax fellow (whoever he may be) wrote a really entertaining fantasy adventure. Made me want to play.

A friend I made in late high school had grown up playing D&D and when he came into our group, we all just fell into it as well. It was loads of fun and it laid a big hand is us becoming a pretty tight knit group. We've gone our separate ways now, but I still enjoy playing D&D.

I came to it kinda late. No one in my highschool that I knew of was into it. MTG and Pokemon were the geek games of choice. I was into MTG then.
In my mid 20's, I picked up the 4e Red Box, and tried playing it with a couple friends.
It didn't work out. Only one was actually interested and he had scheduling troubles. The others mostly wanted to hang out and drink.

A few years later, a guy I was going to college with had an opening at his table, and invited me to join. They were playing 3.5 and I had a blast. Been playing consistently ever since.

I'd heard about it in some of my video gaming circles, but never knew anyone who played it. Then when I went off to college, I saw a flyer for the College's Adventurer's Guild, aka the RPG club. Had a blast, met some of the best friends I've ever had, and fell deeper and deeper down the nerdy rabbit hole

I still have that flyer with my important gaming papers

I got into D&D in high school; a friend of mine had a copy of the 3rd edition Player's Handbook. Or was it 3.5....darn. Its been so long I don't quite recall. Mostly me and a bunch of dudes were just goofing around and enjoyed a few good ol' hack-n-slash sessions, and the grand majority of them stopped playing tabletop rpgs altogether after that. I kept at it, though I drifted away from D&D for several years until the past year or so, thanks to 5th edition, though I was playing other tabletops during that time.

Back in college, I played some games with some old friends I rarely see because everyone got their ^&%$ together except me. We called ourselves the Infinite Gods, which was inspired by a really old discussion I once had that became a running gag.

I also was introduced to D&D in high school. Several of my friends gathered in the library in the early mornings before class to play. With nothing better to do, I lingered around their table and quickly learned it was comedy gold. Before I knew it, I was rolling up my own character and joining in. To this day, those were the funniest sessions I've ever participated in, and because we were gathered nearly every weekday, completing campaigns was actually possible. Bit nostalgic for that..

I knew about D&D years ago but I always thought I could never learn to play it. I only did written "roleplay" basically just writing a story together with a friend without any rules. I later roleplayed on WoW. Some time ago I started listening to The Adventure Zone D&D podcast and I got hooked and looked for a D&D group in my area!
