Odysseus smiled; it was finally time. Quickly and efficiently he calculated the approach vector to Translation Point A. "Approach vector laid in; engines fully powered and active; all systems report ready for departure - engaging thrusters... now!"

A subtle rumble could be heard as the engines roared to life. The ship begun to gracefully glide towards the translation point.

OOCAs far as I can tell, I don't need to roll anything for normal (non-combat) space flight maneuvers. Let me know if I am wrong... still familiarizing myself with the ruleset.

The navigator quickly determines that the jump will take about 22 days in real time. Meanwhile the engines roar to life and the Signatus Fortuna leaves its moorings for the first time in generations. The Guardsmen company that was quickly drafted from Scintilla begins to settle down into their quarters for the long journey ahead. As you ply your way through the void you are escorted by two system ships, their hulls too small to house a warp engine, and thus doomed to live their lives around the star they were born on.

After five days you reach the translation point. It appears that the admiral's vessel will be arriving later, but you have the go ahead to jump without him. The escort ships turn back and the crew prepares themselves for translation. The lives of the crew now rest in the capable hands of the navigator.

After five days of interspersed activity and anticipation, the Signatus Fortuna finally stands ready to make its maiden voyage into the Warp. As the escort ships veer away, final checklists are submitted and all bulkheads sealed with overseers leading deck crews in prayers of purification and safe travel. The senior staff stands ready on the bridge, gazing into the dark abyss of space until the warded shutters slide down and conceal the view. The trepidation of the crew is palpable.

Gaius Artinazar, Chartist Navigator, is elsewhere, ensconced in the great ballroom beneath Fortuna's arched observation dome. The vast space is dark save for a circle of votive candles dripping wax on the polished marble floor. While the space would normally house tables for banquets or great banners of lineage and conquest, Gaius had ordered it cleared and scrubbed. Sitting in the center of the circle of candles, he was likewise purified, clad in a white samite robe embroidered with complex meditative patterns taught by the Magisterial Houses. For the past hour he has been chanting through the rites as taught to him by his fathers and their fathers before him, a legacy originating before the Emperor Himself. For a new ship and a new voyage, no precaution was to be spared. At long last, he holds a one-way com-bead to his mouth and says "Gillead, activate the field."

With a sucking noise audible to no others on the ship, the all-important Gellar Field rises into place, keeping the Signatus Fortuna shielded from the Aethyr and its inhabitants. To Gaius, it feels as if thick cloth had been placed over his head, his senses dulled and muted. With nothing left but the task, he raises the communicator again and commands "Thrust ahead one-third, Strelov generator to full power." As the ship begins to coast forward, a hole in space itself opens, small at first but then larger, until it becomes a bright, swirling vortex of clashing colors, full of pinks, purples, reds and blues of all hues and shades. Raising his arms, the navigator slowly tugs away the scarf upon his forehead. In the center, immediately above his brow, the wrinkled lid of his third eye. Relaxing his concentration, the lid curls back to reveal a black orb identical to the other two, save that it emanates its own light. Its light is a dark thing, barely visible, yet at the same time identical to that given off by the portal to the Warp. It lights the observation room in cool purple hues, the white marble floor as luminescent as the day, fighting the harsh, clashing lightning the Signatus soars towards.

As the ship noses through the opening in reality itself, Gaius takes a deep breath and casts his Gaze into the Warp, separating from his body and the ship. Shining in the distance is his constant companion, the brightest light in the darkest space. The Astronomicon, point of all reference and hope for humanity. Even through the baleful Chaos energies and swirling currents, it burns with white light, as warm as a comforting blanket and as cold as a fresh breeze. It brings peace, strength and certainty wherever its light, the Emperor's Light, may fall. Taking his bearing, Gaius charts the course to Dusk, as he memorized over the past few days, sending their ship plunging into the warp, and possibly into the jaws of hell itself.

OOCtl;dr Summary: Warp travel time! Dice results:
35 vs 50 to locate the Astronomicon
61 vs 50 to detect any obstacles
45 vs 68 to steer the vessel (thank you Fate Point otherwise it would have been a 97)
83 vs 20 for "complications"
91 for Warp Travel Encounters
And the journey will take 2 weeks longer than intended due to junky warp engines.
Summary: We might not die.

The journey itself is uneventful. Only four hours pass in the warp before you reach the translation back to the matterium. It seems by some fluke, or good planning, your navigator has found a shortcut in the warp route, shaving days off your travel time. You exit the warp, but as soon as you do you realize your luck hasn't held. You exit near the outermost planet of the system, near enough for it's gravity to affect the translation. With an ominous groan the bulkheads begin to bend and tear, rivets burst like buttons on a too tight shirt. Its a tight few moments, but the ship holds and no major damage is sustained.

Shortly thereafter the astropath contacts the main fleet and determines that you've only been in warp for 12 days. A good omen to make such good time, despite the hair raising return. The admiral is waiting for you, along with the rest of the fleet. The admiral's vessel, a Lunar class cruiser, is marshalling the convoy for departure. There a two dozen transports, in addition to two more Cobras, a pair of Swords and a Firestorm.

All engines seem...normal after warp. reporting as numbers come in, Sirs. He has a particularly long spasm, one wrought from his long time spent behind the console. Imperial Navy has brought out the big guns, it feels...uneasy to stare at such a line of gunboats, doesn't it? His servitor answers the question before the rest of the crew has much notice of his brief lucid period

We are for war, and they are for war. It hovers to face Gillead eye to eye. What did you hope for, a quiet exploration and retrieval?

The explorator's mech arm juts out in a swing, whapping the skull-servitor away impatiently. He didn't need reminded that he was truely not in his element here. What he really needed was a chance to stretch his shoulders out...get into the trouble and fix his way out of it. He just needed to prove he had something more than monitoring skills.

As the Signatus slides into place in the convoy, Gaius sighs and begins going over the charts again. The last warp jump had not ended in disaster, but the warp engines had been difficult to wrestle with. Wherever Jericus had got them from, they had best not shop there again. Commandeering a com channel, he calls the Admiral's flagship, the Traitor's Woe and says "I need to confer with your navigator, please summon him to the vox." in curt and commanding tones.

"Yes, Navigator Artinazar. I will alert him immediately." A few moments later the navigator from the Woe is on the vox. "This is navigator Severus Fernandz, make it quick, I have to chart the route and I don't have much time." His voice is curt and he sounds inpatient at the interruption.

Meanwhile the admiral hails the bridge of the Fortuna. "I see you've arrived safely. Let us get the business out of the way. You'll be joining up with our other two Cobras to form a patrol near the center of the convoy. I will lead and the swords and firestorm will take up the rear. Hopefully we will have a smooth journey from the system rim to Cobalt. There haven't been many reports of Eldar vessels in orbit, but the xeno has always been a slippery foe..."

Captain Khan emerges from the rear hatchway onto the bridge while the automated fanfare trumpets his house's anthem.

He turns to Gaius and politely relieves him before addressing the admiral on the screen, his hands folded behind his back.

"The foul Eldar witches are treacherous, lord Admiral, but we will be ready for their trickery. Emperor be with you."

He turns to the bridge staff. "Embark on the lord admiral's command."

" Let them come... I will make sure they receive the warm welcome they deserve!", said Odysseus, slightly tapping the fire control console.

"Cousin Fernandz, this is Cousin Artinazar of the Signatus Fortuna. I have not traveled this route before and was wondering if you might have any charts or tips to help an old relative like me." is Gaius' response into the comm system, working the charm for all it's worth.

When Captain Khan enters the bridge, Gaius turns and says "After I see if I can get anything useful out of my colleague, then we should be ready to engage alongside the fleet."

OOCThe "cousin" thing is not implying actual cousins, but fellow navigators.

"Very good, commander." Khan says, drumming his fingers against the hand rest of his captain's throne. "Make sure you tell navigator Fernandz that our arrival will greatly affect the success of our mission and the safety of the task force. I expect you to receive all the help you can get regarding our journey. Inform me if the case be otherwise."

Fernandz quickly agrees to provide a fairly new chart and a bit of advice.

"The maw is a dangerous passage, one of the worst this side of Terra. Keep your wits about you and don't be afraid to drop out of warp to adjust your bearings. There are few waypoints, safe havens in the storm, that I've marked on the map. They aren't exactly secret, so I can't promise they'll be empty if you go there. That is all I can offer. May the Emperor watch over you all, and may his light guide you to safe orbits.

OOC+20 on Navigation(Warp) tests while crossign the Maw only. The locations are simply marked as Battleground, Witch-cursed, Temple, and Hermitage starting at port wander and heading deeper into the Maw.

Throughout all the conversations, Gillead kept quiet at his console. Occasionally he tapped a few commands in to help even out engine power, but so far everything was well within limits. It was a quiet trip, and that's how he hoped to keep it. Hearing the call to warp, he turned his focus inward, preparing mentally every possible situation. He mumbled softly as he enumerated each step of protocol in case of damage. Hull breach, warp engine damage...all of the most dangerous situations he ticked off in his head. A scary place it must be to be in the mind of a techpriest.

Very much bored and frustrated with the need for an entirely naval mission Coyle lounged about in his quarters. Wheres the fire when ya need it, he mused to himself, his feet kicked up on the edge of his bunk. He began wondering how soon it would be until they all went back into their jump procedures.

Having had just about enough waiting around during the hours between his ready checks and his personal incarceration in his quarters; he finally made his way to the flight deck. The door to the deck opened with its tell tale metallic shifting and he walked out, his hands folded behind his head. What's the word folks, those navy boys finally ready to get trenches on this run? His words were callous and ignorant, not even bothering to check what the others were actually in motions of preparation.

Captain Khan toured the various sections of the ship. At each compartment, he stopped, gave a few orders to the man in charge followed by words of encouragement and duty to the crew, before returning to the bridge.

Anxious to get underway, he turned to the senior staff officers. "Embark." he said, sitting on the captain's throne.
