Other question, in the name of realism... which fellow players may hate me for.. but would we have lost our gear in the crashing of ships/ being rescued bit?

I gave this a bit of thought; those that survived were able to salvage either their gear or approximation thereof (I am not a GM who takes away stuff based on GM fiat- and if the ship scenarios had been played through you might have not all "wrecked," some of the ships might have survived based on your actions).

How will we handle spells for those 2 levels that we have gained? Do I have any level 2 spells available for example?

you can add one 1st level spell and 2 second level spells. Obviously, you need a mentor...
