Okay so due to life nabbing up a couple of players, we're once again seeking new players (approx. 1-2) for the game! We have just finished the first thread and now would be the ideal time to jump in!

Hiya, I'm quite interested. Would you be open to someone who has never played City of Mists or any PbtA game?

Yeah, newcomers to the PbtA system are definitely welcome.

See, I keep trying to think of characters but they keep turning into bad guys. :P

Well run me through some examples and we'll see what you've got; It's important to remember with this system that the Character and their Mythoi are separate entities individually, they can both want different things and have different goals.

Definite interest if you still need players, Marsh Here's the concept for now, will flesh it out later.

Character Name: Lucas Lawson

Age: 26

Occupation: Paramedic

Mythoi: The Whitechapel Murderer AKA Jack the Ripper

Background / Mythoi Awakening: Lucas’ life was fairly ordinary up to the fateful night down in the Pesgan Slums. Growing up in Downtown born to a pair of well-off surgeons, Lucas was fully-expected to follow his parents’ footsteps into medical school and the onto the high-paying world of surgery for those who could afford his services. Unfortunately (in their eyes) Lucas spent a fair amount of time growing up with his paternal grandmother (usually after escaping from another soon-to-be-fired babysitter) who ran a free clinic down in the Ethnic Burroughs, where she herself had grown up and lived all her life despite her son endeavouring to get out of the area as soon as he could.

As such, despite graduating with honours and having his pick from a choice of private hospitals to apply to, Lucas instead went to work as a paramedic, deciding his skills would be best used for those who needed them at the most crucial time. Suffice it to say, this caused a bit of a rift to form between him and his parents and four years later they still haven’t gotten back on speaking terms, though as of last December he has at least made it back onto the Christmas card list.

Apart from the coolness between him and his parents, Lucas didn’t feel too bad about where he was in life. He was in a career he loved, even though he had to deal with pain and death every single day and while they weren’t meant to keep score, he took pride in the fact that he always managed to save more than he lost on any given day. His partners often ascribed this to a medical knowledge that bordered on encyclopaedic, especially when it came to anatomy.

Then one night Lucas and his partner Andrew were called out to a stabbing in the slums and on arrival, they found a man in the street dying from multiple stab wounds. The two immediately began trying to stabilise the man when they were interrupted by a group of three men, one still wielding the knife that, on examination, Lucas instinctively knew had carved the deep wounds into the man they were trying to help.

”You two jumpsuits want to keep breathing, you step away from him…” The knife-wielder hissed, waving the knife around and Lucas spotted the gang tattoo on the back of his hand, and shifted his eyes to the man on the ground and spotted a different set of tattoos on his hand. Great, they were caught in the middle of a gang war. ”He needs to choke for what he did to our brother.”

The pair was were unarmed but Lucas saw Andrew’s one hand, the one not currently trying to stem blood loss, creeping towards the scalpel in their medical kit. Lucas shook his head, not wanting Andrew to do anything stupid but he was too late. His fellow paramedic’s frantic slash with the scalpel missed and he was stabbed in the sternum in turn. Lucas scrambled up to try and catch Andrew as he fell, not even realising the thought that went through his mind (Blade pierced breastplate, lodging between the aorta and pulmonary artery – careless, not severing either means slow death by exsanguination) before the same knife slammed, butt-first, into the back of his skull and dropped him to the floor.

”Oh, you want to cut, buddy?” The gang member with the knife asked, hunching over the gasping Andrew while one of his friends pinned Lucas down to the ground. ”Alright, we can cut!”

The knife stabbed again, into Andrew’s torso and the gasp turned into a strangled scream as a spurt of blood fountained up into the air, splattering the ground around him as well as splashing on Lucas’ face. He blinked, trying to clear the blood from his eyes, but with his hands held, he only saw the world through a red haze as the knife sawed through his abdomen, mutilating organs (Sloppy…So sloppy…You’re not leaving anything to take!) as Andrew’s life was quickly draining from him (Too quickly…Much too quickly…) as the man laughed and laughed…

…Though the laugh was interrupted by the scream of his compatriot and he turned his head to see the other man stumbling away from the paramedic with the fingers on both hands severed off, the scalpel that had been discarded earlier clutched expertly in the hand of the tall brown-haired man who was pulling himself sprightly to his feet.

”Sloppy…So sloppy...” The voice was different now, raspy, and with an edge to it that sent an involuntary chill down the ganger’s spine. ”Either end it quickly, or make sure you can play with your food…”

Lucas’ movements were lightning-quick and he caught the fleeing man by the hair and hauled him to the ground before finishing him with a brief, but deep slash across the throat, smiling at the sound of a quick liquid gurgle that heralded the end, the same way an opera fanatic might listen to a beautiful aria.

”The hell, man! You’re gonna die!” The ganger flew up and stabbed wildly at Lucas’ back, only to see the paramedic duck out of the way and the next moment, the scalpel sliced clean through his wrist, sending the now-detached hand spiralling through the air before it landed in a heap on the dirty floor. ”AAAAAAAH!”

”Shhh-shhh…You and I both know that no-one will come…” Lucas whispered with a grin, as he grabbed the man by the throat and shoved him onto his back before mounting him in the same manner he had done to Andrew. ”You know, my young fellow, there is a saying…Do unto others as you would have done to you…”

Both looked over to the now-dead Andrew, Lucas’ eyes lidded, the ganger’s eyes wide and fearful.

”…Now let us begin…”

I thought you'd be sick of me after the stuff I've just pulled in the Witcher game, but alright.

Just a plug for the game. I've been enjoying playing my character and learning the game.

Alright, well - this is supposed to have a sort of Noir vibe. Let's try this.

Character Name: Matthieu Lavigne
Age: 26
Occupation: Criminal/Ex-Military
Mythoi: "Madame Guillotine"

Short Bio: Technically, even among the Mythoi, there's little proof that Matthieu isn't just crazy. Born in a small French village, Matthieu escaped the village life by signing on wih the Military. His service short, violent, and bloody as anyone will tell you if they look honestly. After his discharge he moved to Paris, where he fell in with organized crime.

The last thing that happened that everyone agrees on was that he was sent down to the Paris Catacombs by the boss for an errand, or a murder, even Matthieu doesn't really remember anymore. Officially, he got lost in the darkness surrounded by the dead. He was only rescued before he died of starvation or thirst by sheer luck, and at some point he apparently found a hidden chamber of Revolution-Era artifacts as when he was found he was clutching a spare Guillotine blade. The chamber has never been found.

What he claims happened though, was something else. He claims that he was found in those Catacombs - by the Dead. He claims he was Judged, and only Released because they decided that his Employment was preferable to his Execution.

Now the blade has, somehow, been reforged into a Sword. The Sword wants Justice, it wants to Stand Up for the Lower Classes. It wants the "Filthy Aristos" that get away with abusing their positions for personal or political gain to pay for what they've done. It would be inspiring, really - if it didn't want to do this via Decapitation.

It's not bad, just a little confused as to how they end up in Pesgan if this all happened in France.

Oh, sorry - let that part out. My bad.

The short version is skipping town because it's getting too hot. A head-choppy sword isn't the most accepted of company. I can also think of something else if it's too much.

I'm just trying to think of how the character would lay low and all, killing people with a sword in an act of what I assume to be either criminal assault or vigilante justice is a pretty noticeable thing in the modern world, what with analytics and modern technology and what not.

I'm not trying to downplay your character/trying to be too choosey or anything here, I'm just trying to picture it in the modern era; An example I can think of would be Excalibur in the starting player presets, which is an artifact but transforms into a bracelet for concealability/ease of use. 'course the unwieldiness and obvious nature of the artifact could be its weakness tag, too.
