Application Status: Complete! Temporary picture uploaded while InfamousDasher draws our characters up
The Primrose Guard: Marl "Gravel" of Wadskarn-Schorlgabbro
left-aligned image
Name: Marl "Gravel" of Wadskarn-Schorlgabbro
Race: Earth Genasi (Goliath Lineage)
Class: Barbarian
Subclass: Path of the Ancestral Guardian
Bonus Campaign Feat: Polearm Master
Background: Outlander (Customized)
Personality Trait 1: Disciplined - To honor the stone is to be as stone; I shall strive to be stoic and mighty.
Personality Trait 2: Reflective - I reciprocate as I receive, often times in greater proportion.
Ideal: Reverence - We are one with nature in life and death. To venerate it is to esteem those here and gone, the earth we walk, and ourselves.
Bond: Companionship - I maintain good standing with home new and old, and have found myself bonded with a fellow genasi of remarkable difference.
Flaw: Inarticulate - Verbal nuance and subtlety tend to elude me.
Appearance: With both goliath and genasi traits, Marl is a massive man. He received the nickname "Gravel" from the elders due to the multitude of tiny pebble-like structures that help compose his flesh, and his skin is comprised of deep muted tones of greens, browns, and dark greys with streaks and spots of black and white - much like the crystalline structures inhabiting the insides of many of his regions rocks. Atop his head is a colossal gathering of ebony dreads falling down to the middle of his back, and a thick, sizable black beard to match. His left eye appears to be a polish green gem of some kind, while his right eye takes on the appearance typical of goliath's, with a deep brown iris.

Trinket: A shard of obsidian that always feels warm to the touch
Favorite Childhood Toy: Walking/Sparring Staff
Greatest Fear: Dishonoring the earthen spirits

Backstory
In the Jageschist Mountains, a vast range of towering spires in the far off eastern reaches of Telia, the outlandish and mighty goliath tribe known as the Wadskarn-Schorlgabbro Clan reside amongst the savage rocks, living a primal existence in tune with the natural world. Revering the elements themselves as powerful forces worthy of divine status, the tribes theological backbone consists of paying tribute and honoring their favored force of nature: the tenacious stone. Ceremonies small and large take place for many reasons, but the most sacred to the Wadskarn-Schorlgabbro takes place when a goliath woman is heavy with child. The expecting parents as well as close friends, family, and the active chieftain beseech the primordial realm through ritual and prayer to bless the unborn baby with the greatest of privileges - to infuse the coming being with the very essence of the earth. Most of the time, the tradition serves as little more than a spiritual focus, at most blessing the young with the hardiness and resilience one already expects from the giant race. However, if a child is exceptionally fortunate, and the primal spirits see great potential in the forming life, they will grant the most sought after gift of all: To be imbued with raw elemental energy, thus birthing a tribal genasi.

Birthing a child like Marl.

As a right of passage into adulthood, Gravel would prove his worthiness of such a boon by showing exceptional competency in self-sufficiency. To live within the wilds and thrive off of it's fruits was a privilege for him, but he did also enjoy the company of his fellow man. This soft spot within him pushed him to provide extra resources to his brethren, returning home regularly with extra supplies from his hunting and gathering. This trait would help prove to others that despite his prodigious size, off-putting shell, and quiet nature, there was a gentleness deep within the giant.

Through the nomadic propensity of his people and with his own exploratory leanings, Marl had found himself on the outskirts of the modest - and remarkable - town of Pomelvale. Typically the genasi would avoid exposing himself to these settlements out of concern for their reaction to him, but through observation began to realize this place was composed of a variety of people, large and small, from all walks of life. There were bipedal beings even he himself had only heard stories of existing, which was an ironic revelation considering how strange of a creature he was himself. Armed with this knowledge and a generous amount of food and materials, he braved this new setting in hopes of opening the local populaces minds to welcoming the outsider and members of his clan as occasional visitors.

Though there were those who remained intimidated and chose to give Gravel a wide birth whenever around, the village exceeded his highest hopes, and not only graciously accepted his contribution, but were happy to count the goliath tribe as allies. They offered him goods and services for his help whenever he was willing to make appearances, providing companionship and purpose to break up the many solitary nights on the fringe of civilization. To be such an arbiter would prove to venerate the earthen spirits, pleased by the harmony encouraged by tolerance. It was through this symbiotic relationship that Marl would meet Mistral - a woman that was of great intrigue to him, despite his inability to confess and articulate as such, and who would become the strongest connection he had to another life.

Though wildly different in many ways, when they worked together, they made a dynamic and effective team. While her volatile personality did conflict with his own stone cold demeanor, there were many times he couldn't help but find her passions charming - but most importantly, an honest glimpse into who she was at her core. A concept that was almost alien for a man as reserved as Gravel.
Dinner Interrupted: Why Do We Answer the King's Call”I was wondering, Gravel, do you have any vices?” Mistral was dragging the tip of a slender finger around the rim of a glass of wine, making a slight humming noise as it moved. ”Clearly I indulge in this one every so often, but I haven’t seen you take part in anything yourself. Do you even have any?”

Marl’s grip on his large pitcher didn’t falter as his companion continued her line of questioning, droplets streaming down the sides of his mouth as he pondered an answer. To have these “vices” seemed impractical, aiding themselves only to indulgences not necessary to grow and thrive. "I enjoy…" Gravel looked around slowly at anything he could use as an answer, eyes repeatedly drawn back to his beverage. "...water." he shrugged. Marl knew this didn’t qualify as an appropriate response, but he had no other options to offer.

The air genasi shrugged and laughed ”Fair enough, I’m not really surprised. You never really do anything outside of what you may need. What about hobbies? Anything? Surely maybe there’s something that helps you relax? Take for instance, I like to learn languages when we don’t have a job that we’re doing” she watched him expectantly.

“I hunt and gather. Make preparations for the coming weather. I keep my den clear of root and pest and…” the goliath couldn’t help but notice Mistral’s squinting eyes and tilting head as he listed off his daily activities. “...these are...not hobbies? Then...I don’t know. I suppose I like to watch things.” he thought harder, truly trying to satisfy his dates curiosities. “I enjoy music. I have no skills here, and am drawn to the soothing sounds.”

She couldn’t help but chuckle, ”There you go! Basic survival does not count as a hobby, but music does. Even if it’s just listening to it.” Mistral paused for a moment in her thoughts, looking back at her glass of wine. ”Going off of your original ideas of hobbies, I’m assuming you’ve never had a pet?” She looked back up at him as she went on, ”Back home, my stepmother had a bird of some sort. I loved hearing it sing early in the morning.”

This was an interesting concept for Gravel. Domesticated creatures served a necessary purpose for his tribe and himself - to provide sustenance and supplies. To become emotionally attached to an animal you knew you were to slaughter was counter-intuitive, yet he could see it happening around him, especially with the children, whose innocent hearts only cared to express their joy in being around other species. “No pets. My family does have farm animals. I respect them, and they nourish in return.” A different kind of relationship for sure, unless her or her stepmother ended up eating that bird.

”I’ll let livestock count as pets in this case” she said as she finished off the last little bit of her wine. It was then that she realized how long it had been since they had asked for their food. Slightly irritated, the wind around her started to bristle more than normal, causing some nearby patrons to lose random bits of paper and lightly tussling hair. Mistral huffed as she shifted in her seat. Now she was irritated with herself. ”There are just days I really wish I didn’t have these powers, you know? What I wouldn’t give to have been normal. Mind you, I enjoy that I’ve made it to this town, and that I’ve been able to meet you. But back home, I could’ve gone to school and not caused a fellow student’s test to not fly across the room. I...wouldn’t have had to worry about lightning getting out of hand because I couldn’t control why I was upset.” She looked down at the table and started dragging her nail alongside a particularly deep crevice in the wooden surface.

The faintest of frowns appeared on Marl’s face. ”You must be patient with yourself. Accepting your nature will help bring you peace.” Her mention of getting an education and living a different life had him pondering his own envy of the talented musicians filling the tavern with gentle music. ”I admire them.” he stated as he looked in their direction. ”I would wish to make noise that is pleasing to the ears.” Gravel finished his pitcher, unable to shake de Lacy’s troubled expressions from causing a twinge of sadness. ”You are a gifted woman with untamed powers. I have seen accidents at your hand many times - but have you caused indeliberate harm?”

She looked up at him, “Not that I’m aware of. I’m sure I have though, and the thought of that scares me. I want to get better at controlling them so I don’t run that risk.” Her confession coaxed Marl to empathize. ”I have to watch my feet. I almost stepped on one of the villager’s cats. I would feel guilty if I had done so.”

At this point, the giant was becoming a bit uncomfortable about the flyer he had kept under the table. He knew she would be upset about him breaking their promise, but this was just too important to ignore. It could have incredible possibilities - it could even help lead up to her finally getting the life she was fighting so hard for. A life he felt she deserved.

”Forgive me.” he demanded as he produced the hidden parchment and laid it before his companion, just in time for the food to FINALLY have arrived. Exceptional timing. Mistral stared at his hand on the table for a moment then looked at him before taking it, ”Forgive you for wha-” she had flipped the paper over and read it as she was about to finish her question. The server had barely managed to set down their food before a blast of statically charged wind blasted through the tavern for a brief moment. The poor man didn’t know what to do other than scuttle away from ground zero and tend to his now electric hair. Trying to calm down, Mistral breathed in deep and slowly let it out before locking eyes on him, ”We both promised, no work. Where did this even come from?” Mistral had to take a moment to reread the paper. Escorting a princess? Didn’t they have knights for that? But, this...this was a good opportunity. She glanced at Gravel then back at the decree, the air around her calming even more. ”Yes, alright, I see your point. This is a good thing. Favor with a royal family is a good thing in several ways. The town could certainly use the notoriety if we succeed with this. New trade, new outlets for the economy to go up-”

”Your family.” Gravel calmly interjected.

She stared at him not having expected him to say that. Sure she was thinking it, but he had apparently thought about it earlier on. A soft look flitted through her eyes. Even though he was usually sparing with his words, he always managed to know what to say. The jerk.

With all of that out of the way, the pair was finally free to enjoy their meal while it was still hot. The innkeeper was clear to refill the genasi duo’s drinks without fear of electrocution as they filled their bellies with the fresh meats and breads - the amount consumed by each of them as disproportionate as their sizes - and decided to leave a generous tip and not linger. The building had surely seen enough of them for one night. As the doorway closed behind them and the moonlight gleaming down upon Pomelvale, Marl had finally thought of a simple courtship question.

”What makes you smile?" he turned his gaze from the sparkling stars down to her - and in turn, she looked up to him with a beaming grin.
OOC: Why Do You Want To Play Your Character?Marl is the product of wanting to make a "yin and yang" type duo to play alongside my wonderful partner InfamousDasher. With her strongly drawn in by the Storm Mage and inspired to maintain the elemental affiliation by pairing it with the air genasi race, I couldn't help but find myself motivated to follow suit, creating a being focused on the opposing element of earth. They're composed of stark differences, with bonds and goals that align for varying reasons.

This will be a special character if selected, as this is her first application ever to a D&D game here on the forums, and I'm thrilled she wanted to make someone side by side with me to help her not only outside, but inside of the game. After YEARS of people trying and failing to get her to open her mind to D&D, she has allowed me to get her into a tabletop game - and has found herself enjoying it so much more than she realized she would. It's almost like we KNEW she would like it or something, but who are we but her closest companions?

She was slow to pick a campaign since joining, feeling too many would stifle her creative freedom - but with a watchful eye on the forums, she sent me your game right away and told me this was the first one to click. Thus, Mistral and Marl were crafted, and here we are.

Well crap. We posted them at the same time hoping they would be right on top of each other since they are linked to look nice and tidy, and wouldn't you know, I'm on the next page.

Sadness lol.

What are Erk's hobbies?
If he could have a companion animal (pet, beast of burden, etc.) what would it be?
I've updated Erk's application with your questions and I would definitely pick the pickaxe as a weapon, really gives him that miner feel.

Came back for a check up and the whole thread has exploded. Lots of good apps. Just curious who does everyone think would be the most interesting coupling of characters? Personally I am all about that cat/kenku combo. Mostly to hear a bird meow.

To be honest, if I'm not miscounting, under the thread starter post we could still technically all fit. We're...certainly a colorful group so far, and I think it's definitely a motley Crew thrown together to protect a princess none of us know we will like.

EDIT: I'm miscounting. By 2 only, but...well that's enough to put us up to 8.

Ha.

Ha haaaaaaaaa.

By the way, very minor detail, but I changed Wood’s flaw on the application. I think it works better for him than the old one did. Again, minor detail, but those small things are what make characters special right?

Player Application
right-aligned image
Name: Melquiades Macondo
Race: Tortle
Class: Wizard
Subclass: Divination
Background: Hermit
Personality: Melquiades sees that his life as a series of acts of fate. He believes strongly in a grand, cosmic plan that affects every great and influential event as well as every small and unnoticeable occurrence. He feels very deeply for those who suffer at the hands of others and tries to make sense of fate’s role in injustices, with the ultimate belief that injustices will be made right. He is very nurturing and loves to give advice, especially when he has felt the voice of destiny concerning that person.
Ideal: Destiny. There is a path which all things must follow and the best I can do is figure out what that is. (Lawful)
Bond: I was banished from my village by the elders who disagreed with my prophesyings. I still care deeply about my friends and family there, though I have not been able to speak to them for a long while.
Flaw: I will often not do something I could because I feel it is not my place or “destiny” to do that thing. I will also feel compelled to share my divined insights with those they pertain to, even if telling them could offend or enrage them.
Why: I have received a vision in my time apart alerting me that I was to be of some influence or importance to the events that will take place at the opening of this neighboring country. I must fulfill my destiny.
OOC Why: I love the concept of the smart, wise old man who shares his insights with others. I feel like the Tortle race gives a great addition to the idea from an aesthetic perspective, the idea of a slow, lumbering old man just meshes well with what the race has to offer. In fact, this character has lived in my mind for quite a few months now and I’ve been dying to play him specifically.

I would post right after the scoreboard goes up, haha.

But in all seriousness, I hope the Tortle race is acceptable. At first with the PHB and XGtE restriction that Melquiades wouldn’t fly here but now that I see Kenku and Genasi being seriously considered, I have a glimmer of hope. But please let me know if the Tortle race is flat out unacceptable. Or any other comments or suggestions for that matter.

Tortle would be just fine by me! but with a couple of tweaks:
-Take that racial life expectancy and add a zero to the end of it.
-Your speed is 20ft, but when you take a dash action you can move 60ft.

I got you on the board, I love the concept!
At what point does Melquiades take destiny into his own hands? does someone have to get hurt before he steps in?

I really like those changes, they definitely feel way more thematically correct to me.

He of course will do most things throughout his day to day life without waiting on destiny’s call to do so. In his mind, destiny is a force that creates great good through many acts. Some of these effects are the result of large scale events and others are the accumulation of small happenings compounding together. As a general rule, he will do the best he can to act in the moment according to his previous revelations, but if some huge decision comes up he will try to receive insight on what the right choice is. His flaw is more that if he feels a course of action does not mesh with his understanding of what his destiny is supposed to be, he will not take it.

Got those questions answered -- need the DM's input on that last one, since I gave a few options there, in order from most to least preferred, for how the paladin powers work.
