Good Clean Fun

"Thank you Aender," Ireena seems surprised and pleased at the Gnome's compliment. "You're pretty dashing yourself without all that road grime on your face," she clumsily tries to return the sentiment.

Your double table is still vacant and minus Polly bathing with Barry and Jhorn standing guardmost of you move to seat yourselves once again. Nearly a third of the inn's custom seems to have departed within the last half-hour, probably people who had only come in for dinner or a single cup of wine. A Half Elven man stands atop a small stage across the common room, apparently telling a story. Many of the remaining patrons seem to ignore him and his story is mostly lost among the rumble of general chatter. The mulled hard cider turns out to have enough of a kick to give you all a pleasant no penalties yet, but if Polly drinks more brandy then she'll need to be carried to bedlight-headed feeling. The mid to late thirtiesolder of the two barmaids finally approaches the table just as the other three rejoin the group. She carries a huge tray of bowls, each filled with a strangely spiced goulash, much like what Ireena made for you on your first night trapped in this land. Many of you are instantly missing the steaming bread loaves served with butter you would have received in your own land as an accompaniment. "My name is Danika," she tells you in a Barry gets very good vibes from herfriendly - almost motherly - manner. "My husband and I own The Blue Water Inn and I wanted to be the first to welcome you all here." She works her way around the table to set a bowl in front of each of you. Pausing at Halas, she makes much over his bandore and asks if he might consider gracing the room with a song after the meal. When she gets to Jhorn, you hear a sharp intake of breath. "Morninglord! Your face looks like a whipped back!" While her exclamation was low and breathy, it was still loud enough for the table to hear and her face turns beet red. "I... I didn't mean to say that out loud. Please forgive me, good sir! I'm sure you have no trouble attracting the ladies with those strong hands and shoulders and your thoughtful manner..." Barry saves her from her verbal fumbling by changing the subject with a question about the laws. She looks at him gratefully, then looks about the room as if she's about to say something horribly racist and wants to make sure there's nobody of that particular race within earshot, then leans over the table a bit to speak in a hushed voice. "The most important thing you can know about that is to try and appear happy. Burgomaster Vargas holds a festival every week to make people happy. It doesn't work, mind you, but if you're overheard expressing discontent or worse, mocking the Burgomaster or his festivals, you'll be lucky to only end up in the stocks for a few days." She straightens and seems to have no trouble with returning to her motherly smile. "Other than that, I think just the sort of thing you'll find in any town." Having finished laying out your dinner, she casts a final apologetic glance at Jhorn before returning it to the entire group. "Now I must be about other business, but I'll try and keep an eye open. If you need anything at all, you just wave me right over here."

As soon as she leaves the table, trouble coming is easy to spot. The older of the two young power drinkers from earlier starts to head your direction. The other makes a half-hearted attempt to grab his arm and hold him in place but is shrugged off with a grin. They appear to be brothers only a couple years apart, well dressed and moderately handsome, though obviously drunk. The aged at maybe 19 or 20younger brother - under normal circumstances would be the slightly better looking of the two if not for the unfortunate beginnings of a painful looking boil developing on the point of his left cheekbone - trails behind grinning as if in anticipation of a spectacle. The young man approaches the table to stand before Mara, "please excuse my forwardness miss, but we don't see many outlanders here. Would you be Half-Orc?" He smiles at Mara's curt nod as if it were an invitation, "I just find that a great coincidence, is all. You see, I'm half-centaur. Well, only one part of me is horse-like, and this doesn't seem like the proper venue to put it on display..." The younger brother standing behind him shakes his head grinning while holding up a hand, thumb and forefinger seeming to measure an insultingly small distance before using the hand to clasp his drunken brother on the shoulder. "Come away Karl. Your head's going to hurt enough tomorrow without a drubbing," he sensibly foretells. Not to be dissuaded, "I apologize for the tasteless joke. I really do have a question for you. Where you're from... in your homeland, do they have multiple orc chasms?" The younger brother lets his hand drop while closing his eyes and shaking his head for a moment. Karl simply adopts an impudent grin and even flickers his glance about as if to include Marybeth and Ireena in his lewd approach. His eyes bounce off Jhorn's flat stare and he visibly gulps, then quickly readopts his grin as Ireena stands up from the other end of the table. She walks toward the man with a sultry smile and an alluring sway to the hips you'd not seen from her before, causing his grin to widen further yet. Her full-armed slap rang out across the common room, dropping the audacious lad to one knee. She turned about shaking her hand a little as she returned to her seat, this time without the hip-swaying or smile. The younger brother seemed unable to do anything but laugh for several seconds with his mouth in the shape of an O. Finally, he helped Karl back to his feet while ushering him towards the exit. "I told you it was a bad idea," you hear him say through some snickers. Luckily for Karl, he allows himself to be pulled along this time. The brothers brush by a man entering the place in a dismissive fashion, but an uncomfortable hush momentarily falls as the other patrons see him. He's a fairly big man, a warrior by the way he carries himself, but the most immediately striking feature is his right arm - it looks as though it belongs to a demon or some kind of abyssal fiend. His eyes take in the room quickly, but linger a moment on your table before he moves to seat himself in the opposite corner.

"Sorry Polly, I was about to answer your question when that man..." Ireena's face hardens slightly in anger. "I've never even heard of someone with that much nerve, drunk or not!" She seems to completely ignore the appearance of the man with the fiendish arm. "I'd planned on visiting the Burgomaster - or at least his clerk, if he has one - to see if there are any houses for sale here in town. I fear we'll have to get used to something much more modest, not that I could keep up with another mansion anyways. From the look of things on the way in, a vacant house will likely need some restoration, though."

Aender smiles up at Ireena and straightens his collar. "Thank you! I know I may come off as brusque and uncivilized at times but this place does not seem to bring out the best in people. I guess I am just not very skilled at speaking with others, it's not in my nature."

Moving to the table he dug in once the food was provided to him, his stomach grumbling and eager for something hot. As the woman answered questions he continued to eat hungrily. Of course as was common trouble wasn't far off though, as the two young men came over the first being quite rude to Mara. At that his spoon landed in the goulash as the other slipped beneath the table to grip the hilt of his dagger. Before he could do anything else though Ireena stood and swayed over to the man and slapping him hard across the face with all her strength.

The young man dropped to one knee in pain and shock as Ireena returned to her seat without a second glance. "Well I guess he won't be rude around a Lady again. Well struck Ireena." Chuckling he waved to the waitress who had introduced herself. "Another round for the table please."

When the room went silent his eyes went to the door where the young men were heading and spotted the large man. Noticing the strange arm he looked around the table speaking in a whisper. "Well that is not something you see you everyday? You all saw he looked over at us right? Please no more trouble for one night can't we just have a relaxing peaceful night in this gods forsaken place?"

The bath was glorious in Marybeth’s opinion. She too had been a bit hesitant to disrobe with only the thin sheet separating the spaces. But the steaming stubs were too inviting and she quickly slid into one. She kept her bit wound out of water but gently cleaned it, pleased with its appearance this far after the incident. Beth was glad Polly was keeping watch, she didn’t need any of the town’s folk to see her bite and start any questions or rumors. Her braided hair was also unwound and washed showing that it was nearly to her waist when it wasn’t tied up. She too washed her clothes as best she could and washed as many of her clothe wraps as well before water was too grey and cloudy to be any good cleaning.

Brandy, hot cider and a bowl of goulash was more than the Sorceress could have asked for once reaching this town. And there was still a bed to sleep in.

As Danika made her way round, Beth nodded politely at her as she was served. When she stopped at Jhorn, Beth held her breath, not sure of the man’s reaction to a stranger. The woman pursed her lips, frowned a little and nodded as she explained the laws of the Burgomaster.

Easy enough I can pretend to be happy while we’re here. I did that long enough married to Johnathan, it will be like dancing. Once you learn to do it you can’t forget no matter how hard you try….

Beth too could see the trouble coming across the dining room as the two brother’s approached the table. Beth just glared at the young man as he spoke, reciting abyssal in her head silently cursing the man for disturbing them. She too was about to stand up when Ireena beat her to it and smiled when she heard Ireena’ palm meet the man’s cheek. Her eyes stopped and stared at the new stranger with the grotesque arm, maybe a bit too long, before she returned her gaze to her cider cup.

“A vacant house is better than sleeping in a bedroll outside. I’ve run a household before. We could make something livable in a short amount of time,” Beth suggested

Polly Titchwillow

Returning to the table, Polly found herself feeling slightly dizzy, as well as fuzzy on the inside. Apparently, the drink had hit harder than she'd thought. Maybe because she drank it on an empty stomach. Or maybe because the warmth of the bath had accelerated her metabolism. Whatever the case, the monk felt herself become slightly tipsy quite early in the evening.

Which is why, as opposed to everybody else, she found the young drunkard's remarks highly amusing. 'Ha!' she called out, her words somewhat slurred. 'Good one!' Then Ireena got up, and before the inebriated Hexblood knew what was happening, the mayor's daughter slapped the insolent stranger across the face. Polly's amusement turned to excitement, as she jumped up from her chair, a broad grin on her face. 'Yeah! Now it's a party!' she called out, ready to jump in and join the barfight as it was brewing.

Regrettably for her, and fortunately for everyone around her, the youth scurried away, supported by his older friend. Polly's excited grin turned to a confused frown, then a disappointed scowl. She sat back down, arms crossed, a dejected look on her face. 'How come I never get to punch anyone?' she slurred, sounding heartbroken. 'I didn't get to punch that ghost. Now I didn't get to punch that guy,' she continued her complaint, nodding in the youth's direction. 'And I'm real good at punching, too!' she added, grabbing whoever sat next to her by the shoulder.

Leaning back, Polly looked at the bottle on the table, swallowed hard, and decided- with what faint bit of clarity she had left- that perhaps she'd had enough for tonight. 'Goodbye, friend,' she offered apologetically, sliding the bottle away from her.

She looked up then, when Aender pointed out the dangerous looking man. 'Huh,' the Hexblood offered, making no attempt at being subtle while staring at him. 'That guy's got a weird arm. That's weird. He's weird,' she concluded, before losing interest. 'Speaking of houses, we gotta find you a place to stay, too,' she said, pointing at Lucian. 'How's your milk, buddy?'

Barry Elba
left-aligned image

Barry watch on with some amusement. Vulgar indeed, but it did add a different air to everything that they had encountered til now and was bound to end dramatically.
He was close to spurting out his drink as a chuckle tried to escape as Ireena's slap rang out. ...Didn't expect you to be the one, but aye, nice one lass...

Not one for sitting still for a long time, the wood elf got to his feet to have a little wonder around the inn. He stopped at the bar and rested an elbow casually. "Say Danika. I'm ever interested to learn more about the places we visit. There wouldn't happen to be a library or a historian around would there? he listened with a friendly smile across his face, nodding along to really show his interest. From her early rant it did seem the last liked talking. "One more if you wouldn't mind." and he leant in closer and spoke softly. "Why don't people like the festivals? Sounds like a good thing, no?"

Still stand by the bar as the stranger came in...but isn't it we who are the strangers?... Barry watched as he crossed the inn and took his seat in the corner. Turning back to Danika he said nonchalantly, "Huh. Odd arm. Regular?"

This game thread is closed, but I'm leaving it accessible in the folder for reference purposes. This was prologue and chapter 1. Chapter 2 thread should be available now in the main folder. I was supposed to change threads upon arrival at Vallaki, so I copied/pasted everyone's post since arrival into that thread.
