I agree, but I'm beginning to suspect that any of the contests that offer a significant cash prize have an admission fee. That's my feel of it so far. I'm still not sure if my stuff is good enough to be in a rag of any flavor, but how can one know until he tries. Thanks for the tip on the publication by the way. I'll have to find a few copies to read out there before I send something in. I'm not sure what they would accept unless I've seen what they've printed already.

How often does Explosive Ruins come out? Is it one of those, "we do it when we can" sorts of things? I thought it would be nice to see a piece of mine in a periodical. It's only happened once before and that underground magazine is no more...and nobody knew anything about it anyway. I can't even remember the weird name the editor called in. It was something like G. Rapids Quarterly, but it was weirder than that. It's been too long ago and nobody cares about that. But I get the idea that somebody might actually read the Explosive Ruins.

There's a writer's site on-line that I found but you have to pay a monthly fee like a club. Still, people comment on each other's work etc. I just didn't see evidence of anyone on the site being published anywhere BUT that site. So is it a scam? Or would something like that improve someone's writing.

At the middle school where I teach a kid wanted to show me a story he's writing. It is an 8th grader's answer to a zombie story. It's not bad, but I was wondering if helping him write his story might help me become a better writer. I'm no expert, but I KNOW I can help a 14 year old to write better. I wish I was as deadly serious about my writing as he is. Unfortunately, I wonder if he might have a hard time taking criticism. I love it to-the-point criticism myself, because it tells me where to fix some less than stellar pieces. A 14 year old wraps up his whole sense of well being in what other people think of his or her artistic expression. Weird. I think I was like that once. Now, I just want to write better and who has time for hurt feelings. I've written enough crap already and I'd like to do something REALLY worth reading before I die.

They are all pretty good, I haven't decided which I will vote for yet. Just so you know, I don't always vote for Vitus.

Thanks much! It is really cool to have something I created in print...at least on line "print". I wouldn't have done it were it not for the short story contest. Sure makes a scarred up middle school teacher feel proud.

I need two replacements for my game Farhaven and thought I would ask my favorite DNDOGers if they wanted to take a crack at it. It is heavy RP (a lot of writing and brainstorming) so it should be right up your alleys. Let me know if your interested and we can work out the details

Just finished reading over some of the basics of Farhaven, still need to finish the game thread but so far definitely interested Klazz. The game-style seems exactly like my kind of game. I'm PMing you a rough concept now.

Looks like we have a tie this month! Though it is a little disappointing that only four people read them and two of those live in my apartment. Hmm. Does make one wonder if we shouldn't advertise this a little more.

Or maybe the problem is worse than that. Are we so busy that we don't have time to sit and read for a few minutes? I think reading is becoming some kind of lost art. So many people I talk to make statements like, "I don't read." What d'ya mean you don't read? At one time in this country it was against the law to teach people of a certain color to read, and now we so completely take it for granted that we see no loss in ignoring the skill altogether?!!! It is alarming. How as a nation are we to grow as an educated democracy if people look at reading as a chore instead of a gift?

----steps down from soap box----

Sorry, just wish more people read our stories...

I agree with Vitus on every point. I have tried to think of better ways to advertise, but so far I am tapped out. I keep my signature up with a link to this site, but I am only one man and I only participate in two games on the site atm. I used to advertise in the General Forums, but I think ppl started to ignore it after a while. Anyway, if you guys have any ideas, I am open to suggestions.

Also, I don't know if the lack of reading is the issue. I mean this is a reading and writing site right? That's why I thought this would thrive here. I dunno, but like Vitus, I am discouraged by the lack of participation, not that I will give this up as long as there are ppl still willing to take part.

Oh sure, I really enjoy the challenge of writing and this is a terrific motivator for me at least.

I could volunteer my signature with a link too. I'll get Anti to help me figure it out. If we all had a link in or sig. that might help. I'm in all too many games right now.

I'll pitch in, I'm in/running a lot of games, so a lot of folks should see the link.

I think one of the reasons more members don't participate is because, like me, they're too busy writing game posts to take the time to write a story. Though I do try to find the time if I can, it's nice to control all the characters once in awhile.

This month I've submitted another story based on my campaign world called Solterra. Crystal Loch is a city I've been using here for a game for a while. I've been using this world for Thorn's stuff and a few other stories here. The Less Than Familiar Cat happens on the continent as did the Patient Time Traveler. This story follows behind the Patient Time traveler and hints that things aren't going so well with Krisnight's vampiric great-great-grandfather. After reading some of these stories, I'm wondering if a reader has any sense of the campaign world. I've been immersed in the place in my mind so long, I can't tell if I'm assuming too much knowledge of the reader, or if every story sounds like a geography review. Give me some feedback. Is the geography lesson too much, or do you want to hear more about the diverse and advanced world of Solterra?

Well, looks like Vitus wins by default Slightly discouraged by the lack of site involvement in recent months, but maybe this months topic will help to peak some interest. Anyway, everything is updated and ready to go. Good luck!
