Emmett is 6'1'', rough, tanned, grizzled, covered in hides with an axe strapped to his back. He tends to wear a woven hat low over his eyes and prefers to listen over talking. His actions are instinctual, and in battle he has a tendency to growl with his precise strikes. Despite his feral nature, he does still stand with poise; back straight, calm features. Throw into a suit of shining armor, one might think he was a knight who has forgotten to shave.

 

Life in the empire never really suited Emmett. He'd had some training as a knight, but the formality, the discipline didn't much suit him. He thought not with his head, but with his heart. It seemed to always see more. Emmett might say he left his life, but truth be told, he was nearly forced out of it between the pressures of society and the call to the freedom of the wilds.
It was there, in this New World that he heard voice. It must have seen the heart within Emmett, the well trained, caged heart. To Emmett, the voice, his instincts, manifested itself as a bear, a guide to his adaptation back to what he knew he always was: a beast.
It wasn't long after he had been living off the land as a hunter that he found himself a tribe of shifters who welcomed him. Not with open arms, but with combat. Three against one, Emmett found proudly against the powerful adversaries, their tactics measured without words, just understanding. They felt what they had to do. Emmett felt it too, though it wasn't enough. He had felled one, but it wasn't long that the others managed to pin him down, their spears at his throat. He expected his death, but instead heard the sounds of the bear. He must've not been the only one, for one of the shifters ran off, the other uneasily holding the haft. Emmett would have then stuck the manbeast (they were all man beasts, this fight nothing more than a territorial dispute), but he was badly wounded. They were going to let him bleed out. And he did, passing out after a last instinctual swipe for the shifter's face.
Then he awoke. He wasn't expecting that. There was a heavy smell of incense (reminded him of his mother) and leather. An old woman stood above him, a shifter with a wooden mask covering her eyes. Emmett reached for her face violently, but in his weakness it came out as tenderness, grazing the side of her face. She smiled, pointing above her and to a picture of a bear, then to Emmett. Her language was broken, but he could make out bits of common, giant and primordial. "You are of the bear. You are us as we are you. Welcome. Welcome back."

Emmett acclimated to the tribes way of life relatively simply, they way they were always on the move, chasing the bison and antelope, fighting back the drakes and always, always moving. Then the tribe died. Not because there was any battle, no bloodshed. The movement stopped, and the tribe was halted in their circuit by the encroaching empire, their outreaching hands preventing the shifters to what it was they had done since their ancestors. Emmett couldn't watch them die in their stillness, they being forced into a single plot of land, so he left. And much had changed since he had been last alone. He eventually found himself back in society, looking for something. It wasn't long before he started looking at the bottom of mugs in dusty taverns. There were, of course, a few brawls, but none as disastrous as the last. None died, all his restraint had been put in play, but he did break enough that it got the attention of the baron. For Emmett, it was either a "favor" consisting of being a guide to a bunch of treasure seekers, or the gallows.

 

Anyone who either knew Emmett while he was training to be a knight back in the old world or maybe a shifter who was apart of the "of the bear" tribe Emmett was with. Maybe another friendly tribe that met on occasion.
Aukan and Morrigan: There seems to be a constant theme about that before Emmett can consider anyone his friend, he must draw their blood, and they his. Emmett didn't expect to find anyone interesting that day, but the idea that he found two in the same day, in the same bar room brawl practically didn't surprise him. A few nights caged up did them a favor.

 

"Heh you! Big man!" Two men, arm in arm and in low noble clothes, stained from the nights revelry walked up to a man sitting in a dark corner contemplating his glass. "Hey, yeah! Talkin' to you."
Emmett doesn't even bother looking away from his glass. "Doesn't mean I'm talking to you."
"Do you know who I am?" The speaker looked over at his buddy who was having a hard time keeping his buddy's wobbly legs up due to the lack of rigger in his own. "I'm the nephew of Baro-"
"Birth gives you nothing, pup."
"Oh yeah? Just try and touch me. In fact, I dare you."
"Don't think anyone wants that."
"Hah. You're scared! Big man talks big, but, uhh..."
Emmett stood up, standing at least a foot over the young man, and looked past the two men and toward the bartender for approval. The man returned a shrug, and Emmett smiled. The two men instantly sobered up.

And that's how Emmett ended up working for the baron on threat of death. The next one is relations to people he doesn't mind.

The body of a stagdrake appeared on Barnes counter with a loud "thaump," its head just slightly to far to the left. There was no apparent wounds on the body, and he knew of only one man who could hunt stag in the middle of fall with his bare hands. "Emmett, that you?"
"Yeah." Not that he was hard to miss. "Hope you don't mind. Took a tip off the antler." And by that, he meant he got gored, and the horn broke in his shoulder. Barnes could see the clotting wound.
"You don't need me to stitch you up, do I?" the old man with frail but stern hands started fishing for a needle.
"No big deal." He knocked on the wound without flinching. "How's the hunt?"
"Same ol' same ol'." Barnes turned to the wall behind him, it covered in bits of parchment with various writings on it. "Couple sightings since you've been here last. And-"
"I'm sure we could have a good conversation about this, but I don't think that'd be before this beast is fly-rot."
"Oh yes, of course of course. Anything in particular?"
"Nope. Just the usual."
Barnes sat back down, opened up a low shelf and threw a rag hide bag into Emmett's hands, their landing with the stale sound of coin. "You know, if you ever wanted to talk about-"
"I don't." Emmett made the motions to leave, then turned back and gave the man a nod. "May the Bear watch your back."
"Long days and pleasant nights. And for Erathis sake, don't you spend all that on booze."

Is he a wandering loner, hunting and gathering for himself? Has he joined a tribe of shifters? Does he stick to the plains, the forests or the mountains? What sorts of experiences has he had since leaving the Imperial settlements, and what's brought him back to Olid to seek an artifact on behalf of a Baron? (Sorry, I know that's a lot of questions and your app is a work in progress. Just trying to give you some idea of what I'm looking for.)

Doghouse, thanks for bringing it to my attention. I hadn't noticed. That background is awesome! Love it. Is he a member of the Imperial military, or is he a mercenary for hire?

He's a mercenary. Most of the work originates from the Empire so that's who he usually works for, but as I said in my app, he's not the biggest fan of the empire.

I've been getting into Game of Thrones recently (started with the show, I've only read the first book). I sort of see Rhett as a cross between Jon Snow and Jorah Mormont.

Appearance and Personality: Very serous, and not afraid to voice his opinions. Values the well being of his comrades above anything, to the point of self sacrifice. Slightly impulsive, never hesitates to act or make decisions.

Background: He once worked as a chaplain in the military, well trained and confident, he was a great soldier.
One day on a routine patrol everyone in his company but him ended up dead, without any enemy to be seen, like they had killed themselves.
He had no memory of the event and his superiors could prove nothing, but there could be no other explanation for what had happened. In the present he has just been released from a 30 year prison sentence. Very angry but somehow unbroken, his only wish is to do his best to make things right.

Potential Connections to Other Characters: His arrest was big news at the time, so anyone old enough may remember or have been involved. Any one who has spent time in prison might know of him, beacuse there are not many priests in prison. Military people might know him.

Error1, cool background. Sounds like it could be quite the character. Something about "Hybrid Berserker/Cleric" just conjures up images of an Incredible Hulk sort of character with wicked anger management issues.

Name: Rahne of the En Sabah Nur merchant clan
Race: Dragonborn
Class: Ardent
Role: leader
Alignment: Good
Appearance: Dark slate grey coloring along her back flanks with light almost white chest/abdominal area. A streak of dark purple runs along the ridges of her spine. Unlike most dragonborn Rahne was born with slight defect, a tail. It gives her slim silhouette a cat like grace.

Rahne prefers to hide the birth defect behind thick, heavy floor length skirts and so her dressing usually have an antiquated look to them.

 

Publically: although relatively meek in demeanor Rahne is a good kid, trying not only to get along with everyone but trying to see the good in everyone too. This doesn’t mean she isn’t stubborn at times or willing standup for herself, or her friends if she believes they are being treated unfairly.
With Friends: Rahne has an infectious personality, if she’s happy the entire room seems brighter, and if she’s sad it’s like the entire world is grey and rainy.
With Family: Strong willed and stubborn, she simply refuses to be lady-like but this marriage will straighten her out, you’ll see.

Background: The En Sabah Nur family was one of the first families to move Medrona nearly thirty years ago, sending its youngest son and budding family to establish a trade route in the new “world”. Olomourn flourished in the new environment, eagerly making and strengthening contact throughout the rabidly developing Olid, becoming well known for his generosity towards the community, especially its builders and workers.

But that was then and this is now and now we see the En Sabah Nur family wishing to expand the family’s business once again, this time in the developing Calia much to the youngest daughter’s dismay. You see, Rahne didn’t want to leave Olid, or her friends and family just to go sit behind a desk, counting money and tracking shipments, AND she especially didn’t want to marry the fiancé for whom her dad had selected for her, one Lt. commander Davakas Paralax.

 

At an early age Rahne’s mother Quirath (49) enrolled her daughter into dancing classes, both classical and ballet in hopes to give her a lady-like elegance despite her physical handicaps. However Rahne became disheartened and quit the Kissinger dance group after two years of training when she was told that she wouldn’t be allowed in any of the recitals because of her disfigurement. Throughout the years Rahne has kept up with the exercise regiments of the dance group however, giving her a toned, slim body and an overly graceful gait.

As with any active youngster Rahne was want to get into trouble, Quirath quickly channeled these energies into lady-like activities such as knitting and music, but Rahne would have none of it and after a prolonged rebellion she was eventually allowed to take up archery and fencing. Quirath bemoaned the fencing lessons, but Olomourn dismissed her concerns about how the lessons would affect their daughter’s reputations, saying that they were mere sports, hobbies. It wasn’t like she was going to go out and join the army or anything.

However that mentality proved slightly askew as it would turn out. Rahne became interested in the medical arts after her brother Zangold returned home severely injured in the line of duty. During his recovery and the learning of how to cope with missing his right arm Zangold, and Rahne, meet his future wife Fhasys. Through Fhasys the young woman was introduced to the medical facilities the navy used and although her mother forbade it Rahne began to take lessons.

To keep the household peace Olomourn offered the young woman a compromise, If she were to work for him in the merchant offices he would allow her to continue her courses at the naval medical academy. In truth Olomourn was beginning to groom his daughter to head or at least advise a new arm of the En Sabah Nur merchant house and secretly hoped that she would lose interest in further nursing aspirations. Through her work with the various merchants over the last few years Rahne has picked up on several languages, and despite her father’s unspoken wishes Rahne finished her medical training and although she has no plans to join the navy she still volunteers at its medical facilities on a regular basis.

Lt. Commander Paralax has decided to rejoin society after being captured by pirates for over a month. His ransom was denied, however the crew of the Garuda (the ship in which he served) mounted a resque, managing to take out the small cove pirate base. Davakas was severely injured during his captivity due to torture and exposure to the elements and is taking leave to recover.

Early on in his recovery Rahne’s older brothers Vicrry and Zangold mentioned that Rahne had become of an eligible age and the gentleman (age 27) decided to approach Rahne’s father to inquiry further. As Davakas was of an outstanding character Olomourn negotiated a marriage contract with him within a few weeks.

 

The ship and her crew have several confirmed (2) pirate controlled frigates kills, and six additional unconfirmed battles with reports of sunk ships.

Character connection: most characters will have heard of the family name and I’m more than willing to work on any true connections between characters

Through his families delivery services Davtiln (William Imm) has worked around and with Rahne for years.

Recently Rahne has met Cinna (hyena) and Aukan (grav) while helping her father on the docks and although the giant of a man with his pierced right arm intimidates her, she nad the young noble woman hit it right off and quickly became friends.
Through both of her new friends she met Morrigan (dark), an intense woman who intrigued the young aristocrat as she had the inner strength that she herself lacked.

It was through Morrigan that Rahne met Lirianna (strawberries), a fire genasi. Although Rahne hasn’t spent much time around the brash woman she se in her some of the same qualities she finds so fascinating in Morrigan.

Other connection through Davakas as he traveled from port Calia to Olid for a special ball held in his honor. (to be approved of course, but feel free to use it as a character connection if you want)

Name: Tamos

Race:Shifter (Razorclaw)

Class: Seeker

Role: Controller.

Alignment: Good, but leans towards unaligned.

Appearance and Personality: Tamos quite often has many tangles in the long flowing locks of brown that cascade down his back. His bushy sideburns run along his jawlength and end abruptly just inches from his mouth. His green eyes still have a somewhat feral look to them.

He does his best to have a cheery disposition, but sometimes those pointed teeth tend to scare more then welcome. While not stupid, Tamos does not quite understand all the intracacies of how people act and speak. He maintains a kind of child-like innocence. For now, at least.

Background: Tamos is quite accomodating to these strangers. These..imperial invaders some would say. Yet, Tamos looks at the situation in a unique way. What better way to protect the land then to guide those that would destroy it to what they are seeking.

In his mind, Tamos would love nothing more than to see the Empire come to accept the land for what it is instead of trying to change it. He intends to protect this...what is it they are calling his home? New World or Medrona. As such, when he heard about an expedition into uncharted parts of the land, Tamos quickly found a guard to inform the Baron that he would like to extend his services as a kind of guide for his treasure hunters.

Potential Connections to Other Characters: Tamos has always been friendly and tried to be helpful to those new to this land. He does his best to explain potential dangers to anyone who will listen, whether they be real or imagined. And also tries to teach them how to listen to the spirits of the wilderness to help guide them.

When he's not kicked out of the establishment, Tamos tries to frequent something he's heard called a "tabern" or some such nonsense where it seems most of these groups tend to try to find like-minded beings.

Gnoll, your app looks good. First dragonborn! And a female character, too! We haven't had too many of those yet. The background is good: merchant's daughter, signing up for adventure to avoid working a desk job and marrying a d-bag. Timeless story, really. Looks good.

I am new to the PbP system. Just joining DnDOG. But I would like to give it a try. I am interested in joining in your campaign.

Wondering if it was possible to play a striker as a Revenant Assassin, leaning towards Elf as past race. The issue with the assassin class is that their power source is shadow, which is not on the guidelines list.

If not, I wonder if I could play a Warforged Barbarian.

Robvdhjr, welcome to DnDOG! It's awesome. You're gonna love it. Unfortunately, I have to say no to Revenant and Warforged. While I find the DnD cosmology very interesting, with the different planes and all, I try to keep my campaigns restricted to one plane. True, I'm allowing some races to slip through from the Feywild, but I'm just not into the dark shadowy-gloomy Shadowfell thing. I think it's just a matter of personal preference. I'm all for a gritty and realistic campaign (and yes, I'm aware of the contradiction within "realistic fantasy"), but the Shadowfell just doesn't appeal to me, so I try to keep it out of my campaigns and leave it in silly Tim Burton movies where it belongs. So the Assassin class is off the table, as is the Revenant race. As for Warforged, I think they can be interesting characters, from a RP perspective, but I just have a hard time coming to terms that there's a frickin' robot walking around. Why doesn't it shoot laser beams out of its eyes? Why does it need to have a sword?

Sorry, it's late and I'm ranting. Short answer is no, but I'd love to have you submit an application with another race/class. It'd be great to have a new player in the campaign. Are you new to DnD entirely, or just new to PbP?
