Pardon me, but that's not the case.

It is an exotic weapon. Regardless of how it is wielded, it is always considered an exotic weapon for the purposes of feats and abilities.
Uhm...not to open a can of worms, Muggins, but on the list you provided, if you scroll down to the Bastard Sword description in the link you provided, it says a Bastard Sword may be wielded with two hands as a martial weapon, and in one as exotic, which would let all his abilities use it as a martial weapon, right? The wording says it "Can be used in two hands as a martial weapon". I played Temple of Elemental Evil a lot through High School, and I had a Rogue with a bastard sword (don't ask! It worked!) and took no penalties on using it with two hands. So I think it would apply in all ways as a martial weapon...they probably only put it on one chart to avoid confusion...in which it has ultimately caused.

In my games it is usually easier to consider it a two handed martial weapon for all intents and purposes. It has the ability to be used in a one hand if you spend a feat, but otherwise it is a two handed martial.

However as a two handed martial it is pretty sub par compared to a greatsword, and the only people who ever take it are those seeking a one handed weapon and they spend a feat for it.

This is why this has never come up for me before...

I could empty the lake they are in if I had ten minutes or so and was willing to waste all my mana on it, but otherwise I can't do anything to get them to surface and face us.

The best idea I have right now is to just leave the way we came in. They are big enough that they won't be able to follow us up the stairs and there are other paths to follow. Also we have no real beef with these guys.

Combat Formulating a plan
How about a Wall of Ice covering 12 10'x10' squares on the surface of the water? Anchoring them in some fashion to opposing walls of the cavern, that would work, right? Also, if they destroy the segments and move through them, they'll take additional cold damage!
