Chapter Seven: Bloodlines

The Children held their gathering a little over two weeks after the events that had already come to be known as the Fiendish Civil War. It wasn't nearly enough time to recover from the events during their short time on Aheka, even though they weren't Deimos or the Sins' true target, but it was enough time for the healing, rebuilding and recovering to begin.

One of the surprising beneficiaries of this regeneration was the riverside town of Edgewater - the very same town where the Blue Woman first revealed herself while attempting to capture Kala. The majority of its survivors had opted to remain in the capitol, afraid that they might be targetted again, but there was one group unafraid of conflict: the Children in the Dark themselves.

Vulcar has allowed them to use Edgewater as their own 'embassy' on Aheka, provided that they help rebuild the town and protect those who chose to return as they would their own. It was an odd thing for most of them, as the Children didn't usually use buildings or houses - no home was permanent in the Plane of Shadows in fact - but with the help of the 'Freeborn' they have managed to rebuild a great deal even in that short time.

By the time of the gathering, even though most of the surviving buildings had been repaired enough to be usable the Children and locals had put aside room for and even erected a few tents of their own, for cover, privacy and sleeping. It took the native Ahekans a while to realise said tents were fashioned from fiendish hides along with most of the leather and clothing that the Children made for themselves.

While there were to be many representatives from all over Aheka attending the event they would soon realise that their numbers would be truly dwarfed by the thousands of Children who began to amass in Edgewater and even this was but a fraction of the hundreds of thousands of Children there were in all. With three of the Sins being dead, as well as the Demon Queen herself and the de-powering of Deimos, this was set to be the largest gathering of Children ever seen, with representatives from every Clan and most if not all of the largest/most influential Families. It was also to be the first gathering of all the Keepers, who serve as the spiritual leaders of the Children, in centuries.

At the centre of Edgewater was an immense bonfire, around which were spread various drums including three truly massive ones. Curiously, few Children appeared to be gathering around it, instead gathering around the town itself in loose and ever-changing groups. It was very rare for so many Children from so many different Clans and Families to be in the same place which meant a lot of mingling and even quite a few competitions breaking out, with Children competing with each other at various feats such as throwing daggers at a target or even simple arm wrestling.

Even with this disjointed feel to it, there was a distinctly celebratory atmosphere among the Children, with pockets of dancing, singing and drinking popping up at various points for a time. Despite this, it seemed as if they were all waiting for something before they began the celebrations proper and content to mingle amongst themselves and the few Freeborn present for now.

It was still early, with the sun only just beginning to dip below the horizon, so not everyone had arrived yet, at least among the 'Freeborn'. As a result there were still a few groups working on a building or two. Surprisingly, they were being aided by several of the Unknown Gods, many of which had arrived early to aid in the last of the rebuilding while the others did so to mingle. The Gods had so far refused to talk about their intentions when asked, simply stating that they would rather speak when everyone was here to listen rather than repeating themselves over and over again.

The only visible change that the Children had made to Edgewater were a series of small towers, only a couple of stories tall, which made a ring around the town, all of which had Children milling about them keeping an eye all around it. Whenever someone approached Edgewater they would be approached and spoken to by three Children in order to find out who they were. Assuming they were expected, they would be welcomed into the town but warned against attacking anyone - Child or guest alike. Otherwise they didn't appear to be much concerned, even by those openly carrying weapons, although that was likely because the Children themselves all seemed to be carrying at least one weapon - even those singing and dancing.

So far, the only notable Ahekans present were a majority of the Archgates, several Sei and a few world leaders and ambassadors. Jester was the the most notable absentee so far, but it wasn't unusual for him to arrive to events late.

While Didina and Misa had, somewhat reluctantly on Didina's part, agreed to attend the gathering, from their previous experience with the Tiefling noblewoman it seemed likely that they would arrive a little late.

Vulcar and Celes had been among the first guests to arrive and were currently sitting in one of the tents with Cypher, the Sword in the Dark's eldest child, and her twin toddlers. Said tent appeared to be one of the 'family' areas of the Children, being a little quieter and more private than the open fields although even then there were others in the tent.

Mrith had arrived at the earliest stages of the preparations.
Not to help with setting up the place (except perhaps to light up fires and other minimal-effort contributions) but to observe.
To see how they would assemble and work together. Piece out their quirks and other particularities that would define their people, so as to better understand them. And to indulge her curiosity.

So many people suddenly surfacing. Enough to make their own nation or would they add to Halva's own?
What would be the repercussions of this sudden boom in population, and considering they managed to reach such numbers in a hostile environment, what was to be expected of them if they were to settle in this comparatively more stable and safer world? And with them having a culture of war.

And it fell to her to try to think of such things and find answers. Because that's what ambassadors did, apparently. Even substitute ones.

She palmed the choker at her neck, its thin metal reflecting no light. Feeling colder than usual despite her proximity to the bonfire. Now that she had time to think idle thoughts she figured that just about now was a good time to be afraid. Of the future and such. Maybe brood a little by the fire, trying to make sense of what she felt. Desires to help even under the risk of death and worse, desires to leave everything behind and just live freely.
But she wasn't. She couldn't let herself be afraid. No anger either, nor self-pity. She cared but was surprised to find that none of it got to her anymore. Or perhaps she was just bracing herself for what was to come.

She'd try to mingle with the Children as well, mostly sharing stories to further help her understand their culture.
Despite their being dancing and other such celebrations, she didn't really want to celebrate yet.

She wondered if Nehrahk would come.

Even though the Gathering was only just getting started, Brood was already starting to feel a little overwhelmed. Brood agreed with the concept of celebrating, particularly after the Children had just saw a number of the Sins eliminated. Celebration was great but... Brood always had trouble dealing with social occasions. And this was going to prove to be an even larger social occasion than most.

At first, Brood thought that she would be able to stay aloof near the gates and watch the incoming crowds, keeping an eye out for those that the Sword in the Dark had mentioned. However, she felt uncharacteristically impatient, and even more so, seemed to be beckoned by the celebrating Children. Just because she had a mission did not mean that she should be exempt from the swelling feelings of cheer and victory.

Finally, she spotted Min, Toy, and Geld and decided to make her way towards them. These were familiar faces with whom Brood felt quite comfortable. On her way she noticed Shadow and her "shadow form" helping to rebuild the city. She had heard rumors that Humility had been learning from Shadow. Would Humility be here as well? Brood made a mental note to keep watch, and at the very least, to re-introduce herself to Shadow.

When Brood reached the In'ira trio, she regarded them warmly and offered them a kind greeting, "I heard about your adventures during the Fiendish Civil War, Min. Was the battle as intense as your companions have shared with me?"

Brood returned Min's hug affectionately. Though she could sometimes be less expressive than others, Brood still cared for others a great deal. Min was no exception.

When Min spoke of the enslaved Drow, Brood's eyes took on a dark glow, "There many things about the Freeborn that confuse me still. Did the other Freeborn truly not question the disappearances of their kin?"

The Drow had kept their presence and their slavery practices a secret from the Children, so she could understand that maybe the Freeborn were not able to discover what was happening. On the other hand, if even a few Children started to go missing, the Clans knew about it. Even if the Children were not always able to recover their lost companions in their wars with the Fiends, the absence of their companions was always felt and noticed.

As the topic changed to her own accomplishments, Brood inclined her head towards Toy, "It wasn't something that I did entirely alone. But we did manage to end the life of one of Luxuria's unfortunate fiends, as I am sure you've heard." Brood left it open for Toy to add his comments. After all, the slayed fiend--Murel--and Toy had somewhat of a history. Brood hadn't spent a lot of time with Toy since the Fiendish Invasion and wasn't sure what he had relayed to Min and what he had left out...

Brood accepted the drink that Min offered her, though she took only a few small sips. She wanted to have a clear mind at the party: Brood was no closer to figuring out who the owner of the coin was and she doubted that getting drunk right away would aid her discovery. Not to mention, one could never be certain just how strong the drink she had accepted would actually turn out to be.

"But that I am sure is old news," Brood continued, changing topics, "More interesting to me are the Unknown Gods. Any insight at what they are planning for? I guess I intuitively trust that they are working to prevent some sort of disaster, but their secrecy... There is just a lot of details they are leaving out..."

Brood hadn't expected to say so much, but Min's warmth could be infectious.

Mrith may have smelled his presence suddenly hearing him attracted her attention, turning to look at him, seeing him staring into the flames as he spoke. Her retort came easily, even as he finished his sentence.
"I can appreciate your sense for the dramatic but speaking to someone without looking them is seen here as equally rude, or a show of submissiveness."

She smiled coyly.
"But I suppose that would make them right. I do am a little rude. As I must be. And as befit my kind, I suppose. I am Mrith Jenn'la Rudaa of Yesterwind."

She'd walk closer, eyes resting on him playfully. Inquisitively. Thinking on what she mustered so far of their culture and the terminology.
"You are Sublime's... "sword-siblings", is that correct?"

Adam & SublimeAdam arrived at the celebration after his sequestration with Jester on their journey of discovery and learning. It was useful and he was sure that his friend would come around. He knew that Jester was worried, but nothing was ever done by whinging and fussing over things that you couldn't control. Jester was doing the only thing he thought he could do, find a way to do something about it in ancient tome. It will yet to be seen what they found would bear any fruit, but Adam hope what they were able to find would improve his friend's mood.

Now it was party time and it was something that Adam certainly felt that he deserved after the time spent in a dusty ancient tower. He spotted Sublime, recalling her from his blazing entry back into the world of the caring as he was coming off of his walk about. The again it was difficult not to miss her with the commotion she was making with the head of the slain Sins on a pike. What was it with this girl and decapitated heads? Seriously.

"Seriously, Sublime, we have got to get you a new hobby... dancing around with the heads of your enemies is a bit much." Adam says with a laugh as he emerges in the circle of the Children as he sheds the "skin" he was wearing and takes the familiar form of the construct she had met and showed the liquid metal weapon that she shaved off for him. "Not saying that you got issues... but you got issues..."

"So got anything decent to eat or drink around here?" Adam asked as he nodded to the other Children as he looked knowingly at Sublime. "Or is it just Sin Head kebabs around here?"

Brood listened intently to Toy's words: it made sense.

'How difficult it is to shake our preconceived notions...' she reflected to herself.

As to Min's comment about Toy's feelings about Luxuria, Brood nodded knowingly. Toy had almost tried to run off and deal with Murel all by himself. Only the intervention of his Sword-siblings had prevented his uncharacteristic moment of irrationality. Brood merely shrugged her shoulders as the conversation turned towards the Unknown Gods.

Geld simply summarized what Brood had already learned from her previous encounters with the Unknown Gods. Toy's revelations, however, took her by surprise.

"Children of Zera?!?" she asked with some confusion. Brood had heard rumors of Zera and had a very negative opinion of the man. But this was the first she'd heard about the Unknown Gods admitting to being his children. She pondered these revelations, and took Toy's jaded view with a grain of salt.

"But neither is the enemy of my enemy necessarily a foe," Brood replies simply. She decides that until she learns more about the Unknown Gods, she will continue to be wary and watchful. However, she tended to side with Min and preferred not to dismiss the Unknown Gods' accomplishments.

Having said her piece, Brood listens attentively and pays attentions to how the others respond.

She had suspected as much, which was in part why she had assumed her rudeness fully. She noted his habits mostly because they happened to be the kind of things she paid particular attention to in people during the more social events. It was important to paint a clear picture of who was who. Who didn't play the game and who did. Who tried to join it. Who the opponents were. But this was different. There was not much advancement to be made in Quall in this particular conversation. But, thinking about it and reflecting on the recent events, Nevh likely hadn't led her on to assume her ambassadorship in her absence to merely think of affairs of state; she had to help everyone get through this crisis, somehow. Something that seemed to be a concern of late was the understanding or lack thereof of those godlings. Maybe that was something to work on for now.
That those two weren't Children of the Dark hadn't been expected. She had sort of assumed that their entire group was some kind of secret Children unit. Maybe like those vampires Nevh had met in that tomb. The dark choker's thoughts seemed to be heavily pondering about them as Arte spoke. And the Hand of Samael. She had trouble to keep up with them and instead went her own route.
"It will indeed suffice."

She took up the notes she had been writing so far. There was much lore to go through and Arte seemed to be one of the more knowledgeable members of the group. She folded her dress beneath her knees and sat on the ground, eyeing him with the storyteller's expression of a friendly stranger that invited one to confession. Where did they come from, what happened in their lives to end up where they now stood?
"So, Arte, what brought you into all of this? How did it begin?"

Brood agreed at least that much with Toy: the Unknown Gods had promised answers.

"Indeed," she replied.

Taking a look around at the other guests who had arrived, Brood decided to ask Min if she knew or had seen anyone the Sword had mentioned.

"Speaking of answers, I'm looking for someone named Morgan Wainraith. Or someone close to him... Do you know what he looks like or where I might find him?"

Mrith pens in a few words, looks at the flames for a moment then inks in a few more. Instead of noting him down word for word, she simply writes down her impressions and the mood that settles it. Easier to work back on it later if needs be.
"Not very helpful indeed. But it could make for a nice prelude. It begins and ends in blood, as it so often does."

His inquiring on her work gave her a self-satisfied smile. It was her most favored topic, after all. Her voice held a melody of its own.
"I have many stories but these are none of mine. Yet. This is the skeleton of a compendium of the tales of the Children. You must understand the culture to understand the people. I write what we could call 'memory bells'. I haven't the time to write all the words but I remember them well enough. The memory bells make it easier to keep the right pace and avoid skipping a line. But there are also notes about you all and the things going on. For what will likely be my best work. For posterity. And fame. Ah, and profit too, I suppose. But mostly because it keeps boredom at bay. Say..."

She then cast a sidelong glace at him.
"Would there happen to be any among you related to a dragon?"

"I also chronicle dragon ancestries. If any of you had a close lineage to one, it would likely be a branch I haven't documented yet."

WIP

"I wonder how far back we can trace the common genealogies. My observations so far led me to the theory that perhaps all humans descend from the dragons. Of blood so weak that only the human skin remains. First Humanborn dragons having children that eventually went so far as to lose their flame, but multiplied quickly."
