Two personality traits:
-I can stare down a hellhound without flinching
-My nights are haunted by memories of war, I can't get the images of violence and loss out of my mind.
Ideal:
-Ideals aren't worth killing over or going to war for.
Bond:
-A man's worth is based on what he is willing to do, not always what he is capable of doing.
Flaw:
-I'm short an arm but that's doesn't make me useless. I hate being useless.

Appearance: Gastion is a tall man, over six feet but only a few inches. He has the weight of soldier training that is distributed evenly over his body from specialized training. The left side of his face is scarred from a terrible war wound despite the thick beard and long brown hair that he grew in an attempt to soften his appearance. He looks the part of an intimidating warrior until you see the stump of his left shoulder.

Backstory: Gastion was born in the village of Longsaddle to a blacksmith that was known around the area as a master swordsmith, able to make blades with no rival and he was willing to pass this skill onto his very fortunate son. Gastion worked very hard in the forge daily from the time he was able to understand the processes that went into making a sword and as a young adult, he made his first blade. It was a fine dagger if a little on the light side in weight but it wasn't like the masterpieces his father made. He strived on, honing his skills until he was making swords that were the second finest blades in the local area and was quite capable of helping his father produce blades for the local militia.

Now, coming into adulthood and very able to make up his own mind, he was delivering a shipment of swords to the local barracks when a soldier's story caught his ear. A mercenary who made his living traveling about and putting his sword skills to use for coin. This really peaked his interest and while the mercenary was obliged to tell young Gastion his story of glory and adventure, it did more than keep the young man's interest but sparked an idea in him that evolved into a dangerous game that would steer him from the forge and onto the battlefield for the rest of his life. Gastion made more frequent trips to the barracks and begged for the mercenary to train him with a blade and he found himself spending less and less time in his father's forge.

He finally got his opportunity one cold winter day, when the local militia was folded into a military contingent and they began asking door-to-door about recruits to join the frontlines. Gastion didn't hesitate signing his life away and to his father's dismay, Gastion packed his things and was out the door before his father could talk sense into him. For five years, Gastion rode to the frontlines of the conflict, from one battlefield to the next until he ended up in the Calim Desert, fighting alongside a mercenary group. It was in that barren desert where Gastion's life was changed forever.

His unit went against an opposing army and was scattered and routed. As Gastion, far flung and lost, wandered the desert, he had the bad luck of stumbling into a nest of purple worms. While he fought valiantly, not many men could stand against a group of monstrous purple worms. His shield arm got slammed as he blocked an attack then the purple worm took the shield and his left arm, biting it off at the shoulder. Bloody and battered he managed to strike a terrible blow against his opponent and was able to get away.

As he struggled to keep walking, he finally succumbed to blood loss and fell unconscious. It was there, face down in the sand that a strange traveler found him and took him to a secluded and safe place called Falconsrise. In the next five years, the traveler trained Gastion how to handle himself in combat with only one arm at the young man's request. Gastion trained long and hard to make himself strong enough in order to compensate for what he had lost.

When the traveler revealed that he had taught Gastion all he could, the one-armed warrior went on his way, on a journey back home. It was nearly another year before he saw familiar lands in Red Larch, south of Longsaddle. This was where he took a detour, joining up with a group of misfits like himself to prove to himself that he was still useful.

Absolutely!

@Everyone -Once I take the two players for this current game, if there's 5 or more remaining Characters that didn't get chosen, are all of you game for me to spin up another game running parallel to this one?

Appearance: At first glance, Ginnifer could easily be mistaken for a gnome or some diminutive fey creature. On closer inspection it becomes clear that she is actually little more than a child. Standing just over four feet tall, her gangly frame supports cherubic face of fair complexion, sprinkled with freckles that seem forever on the verge of taking over her entire face. Her broad guileless smile reveals a sizable gap where a new tooth is just beginning to push its way through the gum-line. Knobby knees peek over the tops of bright red galoshes and out from under the hem of an old tweed coat that appears several sizes too big for her tiny form. Overall, she seems to have the generally disheveled look of a child who has not yet learned how to be insecure about her appearance.

Honestly child, I’ve just told you she was ancient. Are you ancient?

And are you powerful?

”I don’t know. I could be.”

She wasn’t you, dearie. Now may I get on with the story? Now this witch was also very kind and very wise. She saw to the well-being of all those who lived in the realm - as is the responsibility of any good witch worth her salt, as I’m sure you remember. She tended to the elderly, cared for the sick, and played midwife to their women when they were with child. But, though she ushered nearly every new life into the realm, the witch had no babe of her own.

’Always the midwife, never the mother,’ she used to say. At first it was said with a smile and a laugh, but over time something began to change. The words grew sour within her mouth, and her heart ached a bit more each time. As she thought on it, it hardly seemed fair, for who knew more about the care of children than she? Who could make a better mother than she?

And so the witch made up her mind: she would have a child of her own. But what man could she enlist to take part? The witch was very discerning, after all, and only the finest specimen of man could be good enough for her daughter-to-be. She thoroughly examined every option within the realm, and found flaws in all of them. But do you think she gave up, little one?

”Nope, because witches always find a solution, no matter how … um … orthodontic?”

It’s ‘no matter how unorthodox,' luv, but your intent is still true. If the witch could not find the conventional means, she would find her own way. She reached into the sky and plucked the light of the crescent moon. She cupped her hands around a breath of wind. She lifted the babble off of a babbling brook. She gathered them together and bathed them all in the colors of the rainbow. Sculpting the pieces and giving them form, she drew her creation to her breast and gave it a piece of her own heartbeat. And so her babe was born, a child of magic, pure and raw.

”Yay! I love happy endings.”

It’s not an ending, child. True stories never have endings, just places where people stop listening. Now where was I?

”Ummm, the baby?”

Ah, yes. Well the witch soon discovered that her plan had its own flaws. You see, to wield magic takes control, it takes discipline, it takes understanding - things that can hardly be expected of a babe. In order to protect the child as well as those around her, the old witch used her own magic to construct a barrier within the child’s mind, restricting her access to the magicks coursing through her veins, at least until she had time to teach the girl. And there was much to be taught - not only how to use magic, but also when and why.

But holding raw, unfiltered magicks in check proved to be quite taxing for the witch. As each day passed into the next, she felt more of her own magic fading. Though she had walked the earth for centuries, it was the first time she had ever felt … old. As the girl’s years drew close to three times three, the old witch knew that she did not have much time left. She only hoped that she had taught the child enough, even as she knew there was much the child would have to learn for herself.

”Mother, that was a strange story. I’m not sure I understood it.”

Plot SummaryYou are the last of the few left in the "Light of Day" Orphanage in Waterdeep; the lowest, poorest, orphanage in the city. There's only a few of you orphans left when the last caretaker dies. You are all just about of age to leave anyway, but it has been tradition in Waterdeep that all Orphanages help those who have outgrown them find work somewhere, whether it be with a Guild, merchant or even a caravan guard leaving the city. Without such guidance you and your "orphan family" are flung into the city streets. You make a vow to meet back in a year to honor the fallen caretaker at the Yawning Portal Tavern.
A year later, when you return (job/career/life Background added along with the chosen class skills) you've got some life experience under your belt as they say, but just barely. You didn't have a good time of it alone and decide to throw in together like the unlikely family you are. This is where your adventure starts - Waterdeep.
You are late to the meeting, and quickly "catch up" to your fellow former Orphans as they investigate a missing person.

Welcome to Waterdeep, the Crown of the north, where a woundrous tale of urban adventure is about to unfold. Our story begins with the gathering of adventurers at the Yawning Portal Inn and Tavern. Volothamp Geddarm, the famous explorer and raconteur, has a quest for them - one that entangles the characters in a bitter conflict between two nefarious organizations. If the adventurers complete his quest, Volo rewards them handsomely. Yet a much greater prize lies hidden somewhere in the City of Splendors, waiting to be claimed.

This game takes characters through the official Game Module - Waterdeep: Dragon Heist. It is a treasure hunt set against an urban backdrop. Characters start at level one and if they survive will be at level five come the end.



Details
Character Builds:
  • Setting: Forgotten Realms
  • Starting Level: 1
  • Ability Scores: How to roll for scores and where to roll is all laid out HERE. NO ROLLING IN THIS FORUM PER SITE RULES.
  • Equipment: Per class and Background + 1 common magic item.
  • Starting Hit points: Max for first level.
  • Allowed Sources: Player's Hand Book, SCAG, Tasha's, Volo's Guide to Monsters, and Xanathar's Guide. That's it.
  • Alignments: restricted to: NG, CG, LN, N, CN, LE.
  • Pantheon: Forgotten Realms only
  • Multi-classing: Given the nature of the game, all characters start the game with multi-classed with 1 level of Rogue. It can be Main (1st) level if you like, but doesn't have to be.
  • Post Rate: Minimum of 1-3/wk as long as the "1" isn't consistent. This is very important as PbP is a LONG process. I am available most days during the week, and some on weekends.
  • Party Size: There are already 4 players in the game. Will be taking 1 additional Melee Combat type character - Class (Fighter, Ranger, Hexblade Warlock, etc) is up to applicant, and "possibly" one other of any type.
  • Resources: We will use RPGX for most everything including posts, sheets, and rolls. Will also be using Roll20 for maps. You don't need to really know how to use Roll20 so much, except to see enemies and understand the layout and mapping of the "dungeon."
  • Character Sheet: Create a character sheet based on the above information and link it to your application. I want to see how you view the logistics of your character.

InfoWhat will help me be a better DM for you.

Excitement.

How's that? Yes, excitement, or more to the point a "want" to be in the game and genuine interest to get to know your own character, and the other characters in the game; both from a character standpoint and a player standpoint.

What you should include in your character Bio
  • Your typical app; Name, class, race, appearance, 5e background, two personality traits, ideal, bond, flaw.
  • A backstory that includes a few things:
  • Relationships: Between players is up to you, but this will be a "family", or "kinship", or that "bond" that keeps you together. Not saying one won't steal from all the others and spend it all in one night (this would make for interesting RP, and there would be 'repercussions in group'), but they'd stick together and there would at least be a sense of remorse at doing another "kin/pack mate/friend" or whatever wrong.
  • Character Mechanical Background: Any from any of the above sources, bonus advantage from DM if your background has a Sword Coast, or Forgotten Realms History associated with it. Also, will need to "fit" the premise and are at DM approval.
  • Character Image: Though an image isn't necessary, one would be appreciated.
