Have You Heard the Good News?
left-aligned image

“Gods, does it never end?” Schon asks the sea. “What do I sacrifice to your god to get you to stop talking about her? Hobbs!” she cries. “Ready the dinghy. I don’t want any time lost in dropping our cargo.” The captain is plainly done hearing from Morgan.

Less than two hours later, a few small structures on the coast come into view; Fishbark would not impress anyone. By means mysterious to the passengers, Captain Schon chooses a distance at which to anchor the Journey, and the crew lower the dinghy that will take the four adventurers to shore. “I expect you’ll want to talk to the jarl,” says Schon, who has come over to supervise, if not say good-bye, “but that’s your business; my job is just to get you here and back. We’ll keep an eye on the shore for the next three days. Just give us a signal fire, and we’ll come get you." The captain touches her hat, gives a businesslike nod, and leaves to return to other business.

Storm faces a descent to an even more uncomfortably proximity to the water, but, bolstered by the promise of imminent landfall, the dragonborn summons sufficient courage to climb into the little boat. The others join him there, along with two sailors to work the oars, and Bern. The lad seems almost as eager to stay in the protection of the party as he is to return home.

With an oar a piece, the sailors propel the dinghy rapidly to Fishbark. Each stroke through the water clarifies the image of the little town and its modest marina. Likely it houses only a few hundred, in humble slate-roofed wooden buildings. The docks don’t compare to Westhaven’s, but there are slips for a few dozen small boats at least.

The odor of old fish trimmings hits the adventurers hard as they debark their little boat, leaving the protection of the landward daytime winds. The squawking of gulls fills their ears. “The jarl’s hold is over there, says Bern. “I can show you, unless there’s something else to do first.” Bern points toward a roof noticeably bigger than others visible.

Storm
Storm seeing, land was happy for once. Not being to far out to sea the little boat didn't bother him that much. Well he hoped the others didn't notice his nervous shaking.

But as he went to board it he managed to speak "Farewell captain. I know we had a rough start but it wasn't the worst trip ever. We even got to fightalong side each other. Still I'm sorry about your losses.

I may not miss the boat and sea but I'll miss you and your crew. I know you don't like it but I'll still ask Zeus to protect you and crew while we are away. Safe journey."
, Storm said with a wave and hopped in the little boat.

He was ready to be on land again. And if it could be avoided get home without out a sea journey. Of course now he wondered if this boat was big enough for him. It was so small and he so large....

Gillerithan Taverner - Sorcerer 3

"Huh. So's an octopus or somethin' busted up the fishmen's holy shark doll, but it still had some kinda zap in it." Gil scratched his head and shrugged, not at all bothered that Tolan had tossed the thing away. "Prolly fer the best. They can dive fer it if'n they want it." If Bern had ended up with the thing after the octopus had it, it might even be able to find its own way back. At least there was something else around that didn't like the sahuagin much.

The sorcerer was more than happy to board the dinghy. Shipboard life was alright as a break in routine, but the diet of fish and hardtack got a bit samey after a few weeks. "Thanks, Cap'n! Seeya soon, don't get yerself et!"

The sailors pulled at the oars, Fishbark came into view, and with it, the likelihood of more fish. Gil scrambled onto the dock and surveyed the somewhat unpromising seaside town. "Yah, Bern. I guess we oughtta pay our respects ta the gentry." Always an optimist, Gil hoped the jarl liked a bit of variety at his table and might be up for serving dinner to out-of-town guests.

Morgan
right-aligned image

As Morgan descended into the dinghy with her other packmates, she left the Journey behind with a heart that wasn't much lighter than when she had boarded it. It had always been hard for her when even her own people hadn't listened to her, and though Schon was nowhere as near to the primordial's heart as her tribe had been, they had after all survived this voyage together and Morgan wished no ill winds to ever befall this crew again. But to blaspheme against Umberlee very well meant to face the storm eventually, so the Wavemother's cleric only hoped that the captain had at least listened to her a little bit. It was what she wanted to hope for, even as it was doubtful. At least she knew where they were standing now. Morgan understood that she wasn't hated because of who she was, but rather because Schon couldn't accept reality for what it was. There was solace in that.

It was fairly obvious that despite his display during the storm, the bronze dragon of the same name was still shaking and trembling at the mere prospect of facing their small jaunt over the waves. Morgan thought about swimming instead of being with her pack on the boat, but then she ended up deciding against it. Bern seemed to feel safer within their company and being willful in this situation appeared unnecessary to the genasi woman. Schon had parted ways with the pack by suggesting that they should seek out the local Jarl, and both Bern and Gil appeared eager to make the man's acquaintance. They hadn't spoken again about scouring the northern coast for the possibility of saving Bern's parents, and although she felt empathetic to the young human, Morgan ended up seeing no reason to press the issue herself. Her mind was still occupied by the vision that Tolan had spoken off and by Schon's refusal to see reason. Their quest had been to inspect the shipwreck that had fallen from the sky, and although a lot of thoughts were coursing through Morgan's head she couldn't deny that she felt very curious. Talking to the jarl was most likely a sensible idea though, and so following along with the will of the pack seemed to be worthwhile. Morgan turned around to look at the Journey with her deep-green eyes. I have... to accept that I did all I could...

Bern leads the party to the center of the scattered slate-roofed houses, where a large, thatched feast hall stands. The doors to the chamber are decorated with the colossal jaws of some monstrous shark that could easily swallow a man whole. No guards watch the exterior of the hall. As the party moves to enter, Bern drops to the rear, allowing Storm to push both doors open dramatically.

Inside, two long tables border a narrow fire pit that runs the length of the hall. Over this a handful of large sea bass and a single pig slowly roast. Crowded in groups at the tables are what appear to be twelve warriors, modestly equipped. At the far end of the hall, is a man who looks much the same, but sits on a wooden throne. As the party enters, the boisterous conversation among the warriors suddenly stops, though no record has scratched.

The jarl breaks the brief silence by bellowing across the room at the arrivals. “Who are these foreign folk in my hall?” he demands. “If you are friends, then take a seat at my table and have an ale. If you are foes, you picked a good day to die.” The gathered warriors, hands now on weapons, seem to agree.

Storm
Storm was excited to be on land and liked seeing the small town. He ran about slightly like a kid at a fair taking in the sights. But stopped and walked solemnly to the two big doors. Almost incontrol of his excitement... but he pushed both doors open a bit hard drawing immediate attention.

But as he was addressed he responded "Umm sorry sir. My umm companions and I are here to help. As a cleric of Zeus I swore an oath to not partake of drink. But if you have water or cocoa....
We actually came here straightfromthe ship to pay our respectsto you."
, Storm said with a wave and approached with his hands up away from his weapons... not like that mattes his whole body is a weapon. He stepped slightly dice ways to allow everyone in.

Gil squeezed in past Storm, leaning away from the shark teeth that studded the double doors, and scanned the longhouse. Oooooo, fancy! The locals knew how to build for cold weather, the pork smelled amazing, and the promise of ale was a subject near and dear to his heart. You knew where you stood with northern folk, they didn't pussyfoot around. "S'alright, Storm, I can drink fer two."

The sorcerer tucked his staff behind his pack and walked the length of the hall to near the throne, his hands empty of weapons as a sign of good intentions, and bowed before the man on throne. "That's a kind offer, Yer Lordship, an' we'll be proud ta accept." Realizing that there might be two ways to interpret that, he found an open seat between two warriors and drained half of an unclaimed tankard, in case anyone had jumped to conclusions about accepting being killed as a foe instead of drinking ale as a friend. "Mos' generous, sir. Ya see, as we heard it, yer words reached yer king an' he put a call out ta the Order o' the Gauntlet, who in turn called us ta see about yer wreck. These're Storm, Morgan, an' Tolan, I'm Gil. We're the pros from Westhaven."

Any threat of violence quickly evaporates in the presence of the heroes friendly manners. But Jarl Frostgale apparently remains irritable. “The Order!” he spits back. “Those lordlings and their talk. The king waits on the steps of their great hall, hoping to be let in…he loses his roots.

“All our warriors,”
complains the jarl, “sent to die for the Order, and look at where we’re left.” The jarl’s other guests look away quietly during this rant. “We give away our fighting strength, just so we can go begging back to them for help! Pros,” Frostgale repeats skeptically, and looks the group over. “Small, and skinny…but this one I like,” he says, smiling broadly at Storm, who towers over the next largest person in the room.

“They’ve made us wait weeks,”
says the jarl. “I would have done this job long ago, had I even three warriors to spare. You’ll leave today.”

Storm
Storm smiled( of course it looks like a growl baring teeth, unless you look at his eyes they shine happily). The approached.

And responded, "Yes sir. My umm companions and I are happy to... But as we have said we are new to the island.
And wecame here straight from the ship . I do not claim tobe a pro as my companion suggests but I am a warrior cleric of the Storm God Zeus. Who is a God of justice. We have indeed come to aid you, but."
, Storm said .
" We lack details. And direction could you perhaps aid us in this. And if so might we eat a bit as we listen?" He asked with respect. " I could even ask Zeus to bless the meal and lands here." He offered.

Morgan
right-aligned image

When Bern had led the pack to the Jarl's feast hall and Storm had invited himself in, the humans inside of the building showed themselves alarmed for but a moment before both Gil and Storm managed to relay to them who they were and that they had indeed come to Fishbark to do them all a service. Morgan kept herself to the back and she didn't feel comfortable joining the table, even as Gil demonstrated that being at ease around these men was the expected custom. Although they all had been hired by them, the water genasi barely knew anything about the Order of the Gauntlet, and hearing Jarl Frostgale complain about his relations to them didn't really serve much to put Morgan into a mood to talk. Her thoughts still inadvertently clung to the conversation she had with Schon a few hours ago, and although she and these men were nothing alike, the cleric of Umberlee was glad that she could let her packmates speak for her right now. Gil and Bern had considered pursuing the lad's parents, but evidently the Jarl didn't mean to give them the time. The wreck... is a curious thing... I would like to know more... as well... After Storm had already requested the Jarl to share over a meal, Morgan let herself become a bit of a wallflower in the conversation. Her hair waved softly around her blank face, and she was working up the courage to sit down between the others and also partake of what the Jarl was offering them.

“Zeus,” repeats the jarl, and he nods respectfully. “Yes, eat!” he commands. “And your god’s blessing is welcome. Best you leave fed, equipped, and provisioned. I don’t want the fresh problem of dead foreigners on top of falling sky ships. Get yourself fully ready to go. The sooner you clear the wreck, the sooner I can send people to push it into the sea. As for directions, it – ”

“I’ll show them,” volunteers Bern, drawing Frostgale’s attention. This prompts a short exchange in which Bern explains his connection to the party.

“Mm,” grumbles Jarl Frostgale. “Blasted sharkfolk. You might find more of them by that wreck.” A moment of silence passes, as the jarl appears to consider the many troubles currently afflicting his small domain. Then he speaks again. “There it is,” he says. “The boy will take you.”

Gil nearly chugged the rest of the tankard at the prospect of leaving on the instant, but thankfully Storm had his priorities straight and it looked like dinner, at least, was on the house.

"The Order acting up a bit, Yer Lordship? I thought their fella back in Westhaven was a bit of a stiff, meself. Didn't seem to know much." He eyed the roasting pig, wondering if it was self-serve or if the custom was for the lord to take the first portion. "Did 'ear some wild tales 'bout the wreck comin' over though, disappearin' farmers an' the like. The fishmen made awful pests o' themselves too. Fell right outta the sky, did it? Not yer everyday sorta thing."

Tolan happily drank and ate with the many fighters. Standing on the table in front of him the halfling raised his ale. "My Lord, I am grateful for the warm welcome, and even more grateful if you had anything your men could spare for this journey. He smiled broadly. "My friends and I have taken on the fishpeople before and have bested them. I am sure we will have little trouble doing it once again."

Storm
Storm smiled even more at the welcoming of his diety. And of course blessed the meal. And asked for Zeus to bless the land further as he was welcomed by these people. Hopefully his God herd and would help them porsper. Of this maybe why he's here. As he was going to join his other friends but wound up with his God blessing this voyage instead and so as much as Storm hated the sea he came. When he prayed his lightening bolt amulet crackled with lightening. As it does when using his cleric abilities.
"So these provisions you spoke of. Is that just rations. Or maybe even a sword befitting a warrior cleric of the Storm God Zeus. ", Storm asked holding his great sword out for the jarl to see.
" I'm afraid this is all my temple had for me when I set out. Though it has seen the blood of the enemies of justice it's ill suited to the storms I bring down apon my enemies. I constantly clean rust and cannot channel the lightening through it, as well it'd melt. " He asked with respect. " Of curse we'd be happy with anything you may help with even if it's just a few arrows and spare daggers. You never know when one of those will get you out if a pinch. ." He said that last bit more of a conversation price.

" Also you have Zeus and my thanks for your welcoming of his blessings and my companions. As my quest is spread his words through deeds and bring justice for his followers. It is good to have a opertunity to do just that for your good people."
He added. As he ate what was offered glad that his faith was welcomed here. And actually seemed to aid the group a bit.

“Yes!” the jarl responds to Gil, filling the silence as the adventurers eat. “From the sky! It killed two of my people as it came down. They tell me that they have never seen its like. I don’t know where its origin – and I don’t care! I can’t have this trouble now.”

Jarl Frostgale listens to Storm’s complaints about his sword, narrowing his eyes as the dragonborn continues to list needs. Some of the other warriors look curiously at Storm, and one speaks up. “You came here without arrows?” he asks. “Are they home, with your bow?” A smattering of laughter rounds the table until the jarl interrupts it.

“You look well enough armed to meet the sharkfolk again,” says Frostgale, “with a dagger as well. But if you need your bolts restocked,” he says, glancing at Gil and Tolan, “we will see it done.”

OOCA very good Persuasion roll saved Storm from a considerable faux pas.
