Morgan
Feeling weak and shaky after her resurrection, Morgan was still quite determined to close the gap of missing time that her own death had left her with. The primordial woman imagined that her pack must have won the battle after she had already fallen, but what could have happened beyond that was mere speculation, and so she strained her sluggish head to absorb Gil's recollections as he was sharing them with her, and what she heard was quite a lot to digest for her. The part about the scuttled-off brain didn't quite track for her when her packmate mentioned it, but she didn't really have time to get hung up on that when just on the next sentence her guts froze. Bern died?? The way that Gil blew past that shocking revelation was making it difficult for Morgan to follow his explanation for a moment, something about Bern having swallowed one of the tadpoles from the tanks that they saw, but certainly nothing that made her grasp why Gil was so utterly at peace with the youth's death. How did he die?! How did they let that happen??
Not the most vocal especially when she was feeling very debilitated at the moment, Morgan didn't interrupt Gil's tale when he turned to Mistress Saltwood and explained how they had met Bern and that the leech he had mentioned was supposed to have already been inside of the human boy at the time. Gil framed it as if that had been a great betrayal or conspiracy of sorts, which certainly didn't make much sense to the stupefied genasi, before he went back to calling her killer a crawly brain elf, which finally drove home for Morgan that he was proposing that the wreck's defender's organ had taken a life of its own after the body had been crushed by Storm. It sounded preposterous, but was also the only way that Gil's story made any sense at all, though how that made Bern's death a desirable outcome was utterly incomprehensible for the overwhelmed life cleric. The sahuagin are supposed to have put a tadpole in Bern's body? Why would they do such a thing? He had a headache... But it still doesn't make sense...
At this point, Morgan was genuinely lost about what to think or what to feel. She was dismayed that Bern had passed away. She was dismayed that Gil didn't seem to care. Moments ago she had cried tears of gladness. Now she didn't feel like that at all anymore. Her sorcerous companion continued to explain that Storm had carried her corpse while Gil and Tolan had ventured deeper into the wreck, and what the half-elf said next seemed to grant some sort of explanation that finally made sense. He thought that he would lose his mind? Has he done so perhaps? Morgan remembered a time when she herself had thought that she might go mad with grief. Too long had she been uncertain even whether she deserved to live when the whole of her tribe hadn't been allowed to. Had her own death affected Gil so greatly that whatever else he had seen inside the wreck had disturbed him permanently? Or maybe it would pass, and he would start making sense again soon.
The rest of the story was quickly told with Captain Schon leading her pack to Mistress Saltwood's Storehouse, but Gil's conclusion that there was a sahuagin tadpole alliance that had been born from the wreck's emergence on Fishbark's shore felt wrong to Morgan. Mistress Saltwood though seemed to have understood differently, calling the sharkfolk the bane of the island who had their seat at a place called the Golden Crown. To the resurrected undine, the old woman's acceptance of how Gil had told his story was confounding as well. It made her doubt how she had felt about it at first. Am I the one that's confused? Am I still sane? Morgan slowly raised one of her webbed hands, closing her palm over her right brow as if putting pressure on her skull from the outside would help her to think more clearly. The genasi could feel that she wasn't thinking that clearly at all right now. It seemed more plausible that her own condition was making her overlook something. The primordial woman didn't think that this something could make her see that Bern's death had been right, but she also had developed some trust in Gil, and it didn't make sense to her for him to go so far as to bring her back from the brink of death and then find comfort that the human youth had met his end as well. Was Bern... monstrous? Morgan hadn't gotten that sense from Gil's story, but maybe he simply wasn't a good storyteller. And I'm not a good listener right now...
Still trying to catch up with everything that she had listened to just now, Morgan looked up when she could hear hasty steps approaching the room, and almost just as soon Tolan had stormed into the room and was already wrapping his arms around her neck. Once more Morgan was stunned, weakly putting her hands on the halfling's shoulders and back to return the embrace. The genasi was glad to see that Tolan was looking well after everything, and she was humbled by his reaction to seeing her returned from the dead. But she also felt a bit numb after everything that Gil had just explained to her on her sickbed, and while Morgan wanted to return her packmate's enthusiasm, it hurt that all she did muster was her usual blank stare. Tolan smiled, teared up, and he told her how worried he had been. Morgan couldn't entirely relate, but she had the wisdom to comprehend, and once more she felt greatly thankful to have been able to form a connection in such a way. Tolan and Gil as well truly meant something to her.
In that moment, the follower of Umberlee deeply wished that their reunion hadn't been soured by what she had just learned. Morgan's deep-green eyes wandered over to Gil while Tolan held her. Is it because we're adventurers? Is Bern an outsider to him? The errant thought lingered for a moment. It wasn't that Bern had meant much to Morgan, but all life meant something to her. If Bern was slain in the wreck, she also felt that the responsibility had been theirs to prevent that. Just the next moment Tolan let go of the embrace and climbed back down from her bedstead, and the water genasi turned her attention back on him. The halfling asked what she wanted, but she didn't feel in tune with her body, and she no longer wanted to hear more about their quest when she seemingly was too unfocused to make sense of it. So she replied in a soft voice. "Rest... I think that I'll need rest... But I'm glad that you're here, Tolan. And that you're well..." Morgan idly considered that the three men from her party seemed to have split in Grumbulbarg during the wait for her revival, and she wondered what Storm was doing right now. She imagined that he was sound as well. At least with him I was able to uphold my promises...
