Realm of the floating islands: A Strife in the Sky

left-aligned image

The morning is cold and foggy over Westhaven. The last patrons have left the pubs and the first day laborers and maids are not yet on the streets. Only the lack of sewerage is noticeable as always damp and smelly in every corner.

Only a lonely cart rattles over the cobblestones. An old, brown mare pulls a rickety cart behind it. A young man steers the horse and cart. "Ahoy, aeronauts!" he shouts with exaggerated glee. "Who's up for a little scenic flight?" He leaps from the carriage seat and salutes. "I'm Able Aeronaut Brynor Featherstar, and I'm here to collect you landlubbers on behalf of Captain Frostraven."

He grins at everyone and opens the cart at the backside. "Throw your stuff inside. Who of you is the respectable Skypriest Suluruk?"

Valerius Codrin, Druid of the Moon
HP: 33/33 | AC 16 | PP: 15 | Spell Save DC: 13 | Spell Attack: +5 | Status: Normal
HD 3/3d8 | Spell Slots: (1) 4/4, (2) 2/2 | Starting at 2nd level, you can use your action to magically assume the shape of a beast that you have seen before. You can use this feature twice. You regain expended uses when you finish a short or long rest. Your druid level determines the beasts you can transform into, as shown in the Beast Shapes table. At 2nd level, for example, you can transform into any beast that has a challenge rating of 1/4 or lower that doesn’t have a flying or swimming speed.

When you choose the circle of the moon at 2nd level, you gain the ability to use Wild Shape on your turn as a bonus action, rather than as an action. Additionally, while you are transformed by Wild Shape, you can use a bonus action to expend one spell slot to regain 1d8 hit points per level of the spell slot expended.
Combat Wild Shape 2/2 | The rites of your circle grant you the ability to transform into more dangerous animal forms. Starting at 2nd level, you can use your Wild Shape to transform into a beast with a challenge rating as high as 1 (you ignore the Max. CR column of the Beast Shapes table, but must abide by the other limitations there). Starting at 6th level, you can transform into a beast with a challenge rating as high as your druid level divided by 3, rounded down.Circle Forms
You have resistance to fire damage.Hellish Resistance | Thanks to your infernal heritage, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.Darkvision | You know the ray of frost cantrip. When you reach 3rd level, you can cast the armor of Agathys spell as a 2nd-level spell once with this trait and regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest. When you reach 5th level, you can cast the darkness spell once with this trait and regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest. Charisma is your spellcasting ability for these spells.Legacy of Stygia 1/1

There are several words and phrases that could describe Valerius, but none of them are "morning person." His ancestor's blood made the cold and damp energetic rather than oppressive, but it was still fighting his natural lethargy. Wordlessly, he tossed his pack inside. He rarely had much to look forward to, but he was sort of looking forward to this venture; the clean air would be a welcome change to city-stink. The beginning of a snide remark along the lines of, "Able? You have a rank to tell people you're competent?" but he let it fall. He should be behaving himself after all; he should save it for when he's awake enough to snark properly.

Prrup-tik waits in the morning chill with both his wolf Cujo and, contrary to instructions, his mule Bilbo, led by a nondescript human. When the cart arrives, things clarify: the man moves some blankets and second-hand cold-weather gearextra clothing off the mule and onto the cart before departing. “Thanksth!” Prrup-tik calls after him, waving. “Sthee you sthoon!” The man does not even turn his head.

“‘Aeronautsth!’” the little grung repeats in his lisp, turning back to Featherstar. “I never heard that word ‘fore yesthterday, from the captain and her friend. I asthked everyone ‘bout that word, and no one elsthe knew it neither, until finally thisth one man did, and he told me, ‘cept he was kinda mean about it. He sthaid, ‘Aero! Naut! Air…traveler, you blabbering little fool! Because you’ll be travelling on an air ship, just like they told you.’ He sthaid it justht like that.” The disappointment shows clearly even on Prrup-tik’s foreign features. “But now I know, I guessth.”

The grung suddenly stands very straight. “Ready and Willing Aeronaut Prrup-tik reporting for duty, sthir,” he declares. “And Cujo,” he adds.

Able Aeronaut Featherstar salutes to Prrup-tik. "Greetings, Aeronaut Prrup-tik, may the wind be always in your back and may be always more than ten feet between your keel and the ground!" he smiles friendly. "Being an Aeronaut is not just a name for an air traveler! Anybody can be an air traveler! A passenger! Their pets! A sheep!" he says seriously. "But being an Aeronaut means more than this! It means skills and ability! Responsibility and duty!" He points to the sky. "In a thunderstorm, when the sky challenges our lives, an aeronaut fixes the ropes and checks the tanks while the passengers are gathering around the head to pray to the god of the ground by sacrificing their last meal!"
Able Aeronaut Featherstar winks to Prrup-tik. "Never forget: your an important part of the crew and the airship, not just talking cargo!"
He turns to the wolf. "Same goes for you, my furry friend." he adds and waits a second as if he expected the wolf to answer. Maybe he really does.

Khat spent 10 gold for cold weather gear. If she can, she'll buy a set of the goggles that all of the aeronauts are wearing.

IC

Khat - Rouge Female Shifter (Swiftstride) | Darkvison: 60ft, PP 13, PI 11 | Status: normal | Initiative: +5

Khat was a city girl at heart. She was born and raised in Sharn - one of the largest cities. Additionally, most of her bounty hunting was in cities and not in the Wilderness. Still, Khat was no dummy. She knew to be observant of her surroundings and learn from others more knowledgeable than her.

As soon as she was hired, Khat inquired about where she might buy gear for being an aeronaut and then set off to acquire the relevant gear. As an Urban Hunter, Khat tried to get some colors that would blend in more than stand out, but she would get what she could. Similarly, Khat had seen the goggles worn by the aeronauts and endeavored to acquire a set as well.

Khat was a noctural hunter, and most of her escort jobs had involved parties that ran late into the night. However, the bounty hunter lived by the creed - 'Never a second chance to make a first impression.' Khat packed her bag the night before and tipped the staff at the On-Your-Shield to ensure that she was up early enough for a quick meal and to be outside waiting for her ride.

"In a Thunderstorm." The phrase brought back bad memories of the ship and sailing from Faerun to the West Marches. Khat cursed, "Is there no quality transportation in this world? It sounds like the airships are as primitive as the sea ships." Still, the Swiftstride shifter was eager to get out into the world again.

Climbing in after his gear, the druid sorted through his new acquisitions. He threw on the heavy parka and goggles (leaving the one open and the other on his forehead for now) and throwing his cloak over the lot, put his new javelins with the others on his back, settled his new healer's kit where he wanted it, and secured the bottles of oil. You never know when something will need to burn. Just not the ship, of course. His armor, he'd kept. It was a little banged up from wear and tear, but he couldn't quite justify buying that suit of scale mail; it was a little loud to move in, but Valerius had never really cared about bothering people. It was twice the weight though, and there had been that fuss over his weight. There had also been a set of spiked mail he thought was cool, but it was only sized for dwarves.

It was a novel experience; he'd never owned so many things before. Maybe this adventuring thing had something going for it. It was even taking the edge off of his natural grump. Poking his head out of the cart as others arrived, he waved his last acquisition at them: a grappling hook. "You lot might think about grabbing one of these, too. I dunno 'bout you, but if I roll off the edge in a bad storm, I **** well want a way back over it." He takes a moment to tie it to his coil of rope. Ideally, he'd wasted his money, but assuming bad things would happen had kept him alive this long.

Kazza detached herself from the wall she was leaning against once enough of the others had arrived. She jogged forward to make haste to meet with the group. She'd already changed into some warmer clothing, thick woollen jacket and fur-lined trousers, with warm boots. The cloak she'd strapped to her pack for now, too warm for the current weather. Around her neck was a pair of goggles, which she assumed went on her face, but having never worn any, she wasn't entirely sure. Her usual assortment of weapons was nearby, the silvered spear, an ancestral weapon modified after a venture into the swamps, and her bow, a mighty weapon picked up from a dead archer in her foray to the White Crown.

"Prrup-tik, good to see you," she mumbled, remembering the little creature from that same expedition to the swamps. She nodded at the others in greeting. "Kazza..." She paused as if she'd said something wrong. "Aero... naut Kazza," she hastily changed her tack. The word didn't roll well off her tongue. She was comfortable with new experience, except perhaps those related to magic, but sometimes new words got the better of her. "I have not seen Suluruk this morning, Aeronaut Featherstar. I am sure he will join us." She'd ventured with him before as well. A quiet one at times, which was surprising giving his penchant for the storm. Do we always have to address by title on this vehicle? She took a moment ponder what the the airship would eventually look like when they saw it. Not very different from Valkerie, perhaps more bloated, she imagined. Then again, not built for speed and most likely a different kind of technology. Or magic. She silently shuddered inside. Magic was something she would not easily get used to, but experience birthed comfort.

She, too, tossed her belongings onto the cart, taking up a position to walk beside it. "Falling would not be sensible," she remarked with a forced grin at Valerius. "But the hook is a good idea. Perhaps there are other airships? Not sure if it would arrest a fall, though. Perhaps a rope tied to the ship is a better idea. Or perhaps the ship has ropes around one can tie on to." She wasn't sure, and it was uncomfortable for her to speak this much. "It will be a good journey." she finally remarked before waiting for the mule to get going.

Featherstar turns away from the little frog man and his furry pet. He looks at Valerius and his grappling hook.
"Ay, pal, that's a nice idea, but useless. You'll never be able to get your hook out and throw it at the hull if you fall overboard." he comments in amusement. "We have harnesses for this, so you don't even fall over the railing,... well, maybe over the railing, but not deep, just some feet. Enough to climb back or be pulled back. Ay!"
He winks at Valerius. "But I like your thinking, Aeronaut!"

Then, he approaches Kazza. "It's Able Aeronaut Featherstar, please." he corrects her leniently, as one corrects a child. His higher rank seems to be important for him. "Greetings Aeronaut Kazza. Please put your equipment into the cart, too."
He looks up and down the street. "We are waiting for Skypriest Suluruk, then we'll leave. Ay, he's probably busy with praying for good weather... or so..."

suluruk steps from the inn finding the day to be cloudy and a little cold. He imagines this to be what it would be like to be in actual clouds. This brings a wide grin to his face. He hears his name being called but the clouds have him entranced while he see others approach.

He sees prup-tik and remembers his time with the witch. He had learned manners from her even though the direct approach seemed to be without issue. Khat was on his first adventure and where he had found his pet mastiff. He should go check on the pup sometime. Kazza had been on the other strange ship where his god had been testing his strength through thunder and machines. Would this ship be the same? He hoped not but with the strange headgear perhaps. Suluruk grabs some heavy furs and with his fond memories of home.

"Right, sorry, I'm the sky priest you were looking for. I got a bit distracted by the clouds. Will it be like this up in the sky? I was told you might need a prayer before we go. I could come up with something though it generally involves yelling into a storm cloud when the storms show their face. Perhaps we could get some smoke going through a large fire and yell into this. "

As Suluruk rounds the corner, Able Aeronaut Featherstar immediately takes his stance and salutes respectfully. "In the name of the sky gods, greetings, honorable Skypriest Suluruk, I am Able Aeronaut Featherstar. On behalf of Captain Frostraven, I am to greet you warmly and escort you to the Dragonrise." Featherstar bows again and then takes the luggage from Suluruk, which he then carefully places among the other pieces of luggage.
"Skypriest Suluruk, please take a seat next to me at the coach-box. I brought an extra pillow from the Dragonrise.... so just in case you want one." He points toward the south. "How you want to say your mass is up to you, but Captain Frostraven will assist you with everything... but we can't make the fire on board, though. Perhaps incense sticks will suffice?"

---------------------------

The journey through morning Westhaven and across the South Hills is cold and uneventful. The guards at the south gate nod only briefly and then retreat back to the warm guardroom. A few ragged day laborers loiter outside the gate, waiting to be let in. Soon the group passes one of the villages outside the walls. An old, stooped woman with a basket almost taller than she is offers some dead chickens to the occupants of the cart, but Featherstar scares her away with a wave of her whip. A shaggy, one-eyed street dog follows the cart, yapping wildly, but keeping a respectful distance. Neither the coachman nor the horse pay any attention to him.

Then the cart and horse passes through a small valley between wooded hills. It is cold and misty and smells of damp moss and wet pine needles. But then, the forest opens up to reveal a large, circular and slightly misty clearing, in the center of which stands a narrow, round wooden tower on massive poles. Actually, the tower consists primarily of poles, a ladder, and a platform. In the center of the platform, one can see a large iron ring to which an airship is tied with thick ropes. The giant vehicle makes a constant humming sound, as if a giant bumblebee is up to its mischief inside. Few of the adventurer have ever seen one.

"The Dragonrise!" explains Featherstar redundantly. "It's a semi-rigid airship. The envelope contains six huge gas bags and is about 230 feet long, 65 feet high and 40 feet wide. In height, it gets more 55 to 55 feet, but the length stays. Because of the net." Now the aeronaut points to the hull, which looks more like a ship's hull than expected. "75 feet long, 15 feet wide, 19 feet from keel to top of rail, and 3 decks - the cargo deck at the very bottom, the lower deck for crew and passengers, and the main deck with helm and weapons."
Featherstar turns to the adventurers and his eyes shine. "The Dragonrise has a Dannenberg & Eisenbieger engine with triple defusion cage, caliber 3.5 x 24 with adjustable twin propellers on hollow shaft. She can do 240 miles per day plus/minus the wind. As the crow flies!"
He looks proudly from one to the other, apparently expecting more enthusiasm somehow. But probably his passengers didn't understand more than that you can travel Roughly 20-times faster than a common medieval traveler. It's like flying from LA to NY in 15 minutes, today.very fast and very far with it.

At the edge of the clearing are two small half-timbered houses. An inn and a carpenter's shop with a rope maker. The sound of someone sawing echos over the clearing. A few dozen sheep graze comfortably in the clearing, guarded by a waist-high black dog that warily eyes the newcomers from a distance.

Below the airship, people are busily walking around and loading the ship with various cargo.

DMoC:This is the airship which fits the most to my inner image of an medieval-fantasy airship, expect for the sails, mast and the yards. Thus, future description of the ship may deviate from the picture.

“Dragonrise” Prrup-tik repeats in a whisper as he gazes up in awe. The ranger rarely lacks enthusiasm, but his investment in this adventure has exceeded even his usual, ever since Featherstar’s introductory speech. Prrup-tik has rarely – no, never – received such respectful treatment since he abandoned the wilds in Westhaven.

The big-eyed grung nods his head and knowingly repeats other words and phrases as Featherstar describes the fantastic ship. “Defusion…caliber…” Of course, he hasn’t the slightest idea what the man is talking about, until the last several words. 240 miles in a day? By flying like a crow?!

The journey from Westhaven through the villages was refreshing. Kazza enjoyed being away from her little work shop and the uncomfortable nature of pleasantries. That, and the confines of the city, made this escapade worth it. She trotted along the wagon, occasionally running ahead to scout the path, not because it was needed, but simply because it was wanted. She spotted more than a few easy rabbits that would've made a fine meal, but she left them to their own devices as they travelled. Better to save what arrows she had for more serious occasions. She walked leisurely back to the wagon and then fell in step with her companions until they arrived at the airship.

"Now that's a sight to behold, make no mistake," she muttered as she took in the bloated whale of a ship. But despite it's appearance not unlike the great beasts she'd seen on sea voyages, there was a majesty and serenity about this great ship. She ignored all those milling around and loading cargo, instead trying to take in the lay of the ship. The traced the masts, sails, what could only be a rudder at the rear. Not unlike a seafaring vessel, though she wouldn't venture a guess as to how it stayed in the air. And it was fast. Faster than a horse. Perhaps even faster than a dragon. "Is it magic?" she asked to no-one in particular, wondering how the great ship kept to the skies. She would hate to be inside if that thing ever fell. The Doom would laugh out loud at her death if that ever happened. Taking a deep breath, she steeled her nerve and awaited command on where to go.

Khat - Rouge Female Shifter (Swiftstride) | Darkvison: 60ft, PP 13, PI 11 | Status: normal | Initiative: +5
Khat had never flown on an airship on Sharon, for such trips were beyond her reach. She had heard stories but not enough technical detail to know the differences between this ship and the ones on Ebberon. Still, Khat was a native of Sharn and had seen the consequences of plunging from a great height without a Feather Fall charm.

The technical details passed in one ear and out the other. However, Khat's mind zeroed in on critical details or what she considered key details, " Ah, Able Aeronaut Featherstar, you mentioned harnesses as a prescription for falling. Perhaps when you have a few moments, you could show me those. Also, I assume that there is a short rope and belaying points. I'm new to flying, but I've done a bit of climbing."

"Also, you mentioned a main deck and weapons. The mention of weapons makes it sound like there is a chance of being attacked while in flight. Will you want us to assist with crewing the weapons or only stand by to repel boarders?"

Khat smiled as she examined the profusion of canvas and ropes and the multiple decks. Khat was an ambush predator, preferring to take her prey by surprise and, if possible, at a distance. The Dragonrise appeared to offer a wealth of nooks and crannies from which a cunning Swiftstride Shifter could ambush their prey.

"Why do you bow are you not worthy of the storm as well?" suluruk laughs. "stand up. feel the breeze against your face. We are praising the sky not the earth." He gestures for the man to rise with his hand guiding the the man up.

"Incense could work though if were flying in the sky we should feel the wind right?" suluruk looks up as the ship comes into sight. "What manner of magic is this. I don't understand it but a ship that flies through the storms is beautiful." he is interupted when asked if he'd like a pillow. "Why would i need this a captain should be strong are you not strong enough to face the wind. why are we sitting shouldn't we be walking the ship making sure she sails straight?" Suluruk turns away form who he assumes is the captain and begins to look for who is actually in charge.
