Khat - Rouge Female Shifter (Swiftstride) | Darkvison: 60ft, PP 13, PI 11 | Status: normal, Shifted | Initiative: +5
The situation was both desperate and oddly familiar. Several times in her bounty-hunting career, Khat had been pursued by superior forces. Her favored tactic was to outrun them, but several times the feline shifter had taken a position where they could not reach her and gunned them down.

Khat smiled at Sululruk and told the Half-Orc Cleric, "The plan is coming together. We've found the prisoners and are where we need to be for the skyship to pick us up. Please do what you can to bar the door; every minute it holds gets us closer to getting out of here."

Suluruk turned to finish latching the door, then grabbed the table and braced it against the door.

Khat pointed to Kazza, "You're our fastest. Up the ladders to the roof and light the green flare." Then the Rogue turned to Valerius. "Spells? Do you have something that will delay the Giant and his ax?"

Finally, Khat turned to the Grung Ranger, "The prisoners. They're the reason we are here. See if you can find keys on a dead body. I'll tackle the locks directly."

Khat pulled out her Thieves' tools and approached the cells.

Kazza didn't hesitate as she spud around from holding the door and headed to the ladders. She glanced once, briefly, at Prrup-tik but she assumed the fact that he was here meant the tower was empty. She hit the first rung at speed and started to climb, not sure how long it would take or how high the tower was. But, the sooner she managed to get that sunrod activated on the roof, the quicker they'd get the airship here and way from that giant. Hopefully the narrow confines of the tower meant that only the smaller orcs would be able to pursue them onwards. Shaking the thoughts of the coming battle from her head, she raced upwards, her wooden mask of Mercy swaying at the side of her pack. She'd not worn it on this trip, but perhaps when she returned from the top she needed to show the Doom that she was one of a pack, a faceless one that would stand against it. Faster, Kazza!

HD 3/3d8 | Spell Slots: (1) 3/4, (2) 2/2 | Starting at 2nd level, you can use your action to magically assume the shape of a beast that you have seen before. You can use this feature twice. You regain expended uses when you finish a short or long rest. Your druid level determines the beasts you can transform into, as shown in the Beast Shapes table. At 2nd level, for example, you can transform into any beast that has a challenge rating of 1/4 or lower that doesn’t have a flying or swimming speed.

When you choose the circle of the moon at 2nd level, you gain the ability to use Wild Shape on your turn as a bonus action, rather than as an action. Additionally, while you are transformed by Wild Shape, you can use a bonus action to expend one spell slot to regain 1d8 hit points per level of the spell slot expended.

That last blow that would've broken a wolf's neck instead saw a tiefling scrambling out of a disintegrating wolf skin like a lizard letting its tail pop off to confuse a predator. He was barely wounded when he got inside, but being beaten out of a wild shape hurt. On top of whatever would've killed him, it was like he was being peeled like an orange in the time it took to scream and cuss.

Valerius held onto the back of a chair while he panted and replied, "Spells? Lemme see... I can make entangling plants come up from the ground, I can make a big, um, fog cloud to fill the room, or I can make a wind that will ward them away. Wait, that only works if I stay behind. The fog won't actually stop anyone, so plants it is." After the way was clear of compatriots and the door barred, Valerius called forth a series of vines and weeds, dead or dormant beneath the stones, to break through the floor, waiting to trap whoever would be fool enough to get too close. That done, he turned to Khat, "I also have some oil with me. Want to start a fire behind us?"

Suluruk latches the door and turns around to get the table, when the second attack hits the door, then a third and fourth one - the both latters are not as mighty as the second, but under all, wood splinters and iron bends. Obviously, the opponents improved their teamwork, now.

"We must get out! Everyone get up!" The sky cleric ignores the hail of splinters and braces the table between the door and the stairs. Another triple attack smashes against the wood and But the doorway is still blocked by a broken door and a half-broken table.the door breaks. "Up! Upwards! Run! Climb!"
Suluruk turns around and runs upwards the stairs and then up the ladder.

A second later, Valerius casts his spell and vines and weeds grow out from the ground, covering the stairs and no adventurer or prisoner is affectedhalf of the first floor.

The breakage of the door comes right in time when Prrur-tik opens the last door. He does not recognize the seven persons and can only hope that their target persons are part of the desperate group.

On the top
Meanwhile, Kazza has reached the top of the tower. The cold wind gusts blow snow and ice in her face. The sky is black and covered with dark clouds. About half a mile away, in the mess of the storm, the wood elf recognizes an airship-like shape fighting against the storm.

As the Door shattered, vines and weeds covered part of the 1st floor and the stairs to the second. Khat added her voice to Sululruk's, "UP! To The Roof." and then "Sululruk, we've got to destroy the ladders to delay them."

As the rest of the prisoners forced their way through the vines on the stairs, Khat took the rear guard position. Waiting for the last person to get up the stairs. With a Swiftstride Shiftercat-like burst of speed Khat ran up the stairs. The feline rogue paused long enough to free a collection of caltrops from a pouch on her belt and then scattered the metallic objects on the stairs. She then turned and continued following the others.

"Destroy the ladders" was all he needed to hear. Valerius fished a flask of oil from his pack. After the party and prisoners were up, he knocked over the ladder with his foot and dumped the oil over as much of its length as he could. With that done, it would be a simple matter to conjure a flame to set the ladder, and probably the floor, alight.

They are breaking through!
right-aligned image
Kazza ignites the green sunrod. Bright light shines over the tower and into the blizzard.

An angry roar sounds from the base of the tower as the snowflakes reflect green light. Orders are shouted, but Kazza cannot hear them in the storm. Even if it were quieter - the mighty axe blows against the door make the tower shake more than anyone inside would like.
Slowly, very slowly, the airship now seems to be moving towards the tower. Much too slowly, it comes closer. Kazza can see a few ropes and a rope ladder being lowered, but the storm swirls everything and the first ropes are immediately tangled.

The axe blows fall silent and the first orcs storm roaring the first floor of the tower, accompanied by curses and screams as vines and weed entwine around their legs or they step into caltrops.

The freed prisoners, weakened, climb the ladders with difficulty. Suluruk grabs the struggling Cujo under his arm and climbs ahead to help the others. The elf woman in particular is having a hard time, while the Silver Griffon is ruthlessly pushing his way to the front and is the first to climb the ladders without paying any attention to the others. The two aeronauts and the old dwarf follow him without hesitation. The halfling has surprisingly freed himself from his bonds and now climbs after the others. The elf-man tries in vain to push his trembling companion up the ladder, but she almost whimpers and clings to a rung.
The way to the third floor is blocked!

Everyone else climbs upwards. Valerius starts a fire below and Prurr-tik jumps with one leap into the upper hatch, leaving a smashed and burning ladder back.

From the second floor, Prurr-tik, Valerius and Khat see orcs on the first floor clearing away the debris of the burning ladder and pushing the table and chairs under the hatch. A groan sounds and a heavily armed ogre squeezes through the destroyed door. His heavy metal armor squeaks and scrapes. Sparks fly, but then he is through. He grins bloodily at the queue above him.

DMoC:No map for this challenge, yet. I summarized two rounds to speed up the story.

The druid stood over the fire he'd started below. Keeping his concentration on the tangling vines as an obstacle, he kept to the rear of the line. He held a flame in his hand, ready to throw it at any fool who decided to try their luck with following them.

Sululruk continued up the ladder ahead of the freed prisoners. The Half-Orc knew he was the only one with the size and strength to carry the wolf. Additionally, he knew that his companions would sorely miss his strength and spells as the fought a rear-guard action.

As the Ogre forced his metal-clad body through the door and grinned up at Khat, Khat bared her canines, grinning back at the large monster. The rogue thought"Oh foolish creature, you rely on your brute strength and do not consider the terrain. You are at a disadvantage in this tower. We shall slice you up and leave your body to plug the opening."

Khat spared a glance at the ladder to the third floor. The ladder was blocked by the half-elf woman who had a bandage over her eye. It appeared that her courage had failed her, and her companion lacked the wit to use a few kind words and the strength to force her up. While the Ogre was a future threat, the female elf was the present problem.

Khat approached the woman and attempted to Persuasion - see rollcoax her into climbing up the ladder. "I know what you've gone through is horrible. Danger is down below, but safety is above us. There's an airship to spirit us away. Climb as fast as you can to the roof."

By the sounds coming from below the tower, things appeared to be heating up. But, if she didn't get the airship here in time, nothing would matter. As the storm hammered and battered her and the airship alike she wondered whether the winds would ever let them get onto that airship. She imagined even grabbing a swaying rope would not be an easy task. Somehow they'd perhaps have to anchor a rope to the tower and the airship to create some sort of bridge. She wasn't sure.

As she continued to keep an eye on the activity of the airship in case she was signaled to do something, she peered down to see the first signs of life pop up through the lower floor. People were coming. She then started to look around for something on the roof they could tie a rope to.

“Hey!” Prrup-tik cries upward, “You guys in front - get down here and help the others! Sthuluruk, you don’t let ‘em up those ladders alone! Yeesh!”

Prrup-tik reaches for a flask of oil to drop on the table that the orcs are moving, then reconsiders. The fire might end up outpacing the orcs, and the prisoners aren’t a sure bet to beat either to the top. Instead, the grung steps away from the portal and draws his crossbow, waiting for any enemy who manages to get its ugly face through the hole.

OOCOnce everyone is moving up the ladder, Prrup-tik will again wait to go last, wreck the ladder, then jump up.

They are breaking through!

While Valerius secures the retreat with I understood that there is no fire belowfire in his hand, Khat tries to get the elf woman to keep climbing. She looks at the swollen face, recognizes the knocked out teeth, the dried blood and pus on the dirty eye bandage that used to be a white sleeve. "We're going to die, all of us.... I know it..." the woman only whispers, but she climbs up, trembling, and finally gives way to the rest. Her companion is just following her when the wood booms and the ogre's large waraxe doubles the opening in the floor. The wooden planks splinter and crashes. The ladder disappears into the depths with the elf. The elven woman screams.

Prurr-tik suddenly has a pretty good look down.

At the top of the tower, Kazza Leafwind looks for a way to tie down the airship's ropes, but there are no options except for the broken stump of a flagpole. The hatch behind her opens and Suluruk with Cujo and the Silver Griffon climb onto the platform.

Suddenly the tower shakes and Kazza hears the orcs cheering frenetically from below.

DMoC:@Khat: Dex-check DC 14 to grab the elf before he falls down. She rolls with disadvantage because she must avoid to fall down, too. If you don't want to roll with disadvantage, then roll twice: first for the elf, then for Khat. Failure means that you fall down.

Pleaese find below a simplified sketch:
