I have opened this post many times, trying to figure out if I should apply or pass. Trying to judge my available time and so. But I think the guy with the mustache has convinced me.

I will try to post tonight.

Name: His birth name is Skay'lett Buteleer. But starting from his days at the sea, he calls himself Targun.
Race & Class: Aarakocra Monk
Background: Sailor. Lastly second mate at Lethe, under Captain Dawson 'Black Eyes' Whiteley.
Age: 7. Started the the Temple of the Hundred Handed One at 2, left at 4. Last 3 years was at the sea.
Gender: Male
Alignment: CG
Description: Targun is tall for his race, nearly coming up to 6ft. tall. His feathers are very dark red (bordering on brown) at the root and turn into mustard yellow at the tips. His chest and inner feathers are white. He keeps them very clean and neat, taking pride in his outlook. He has golden, smart looking eyes. He is quick to smile, even though it is hard to understand -with the peak and all-. He wears comfortable and easy clothes.
Personality Traits:-My language is as foul as an otyugh nest.
-With enough courage, you can do without a reputation.
Flaws:-Once I start drinking, it's hard for me to stop.
- I've always have a weakness for lost causes, once they're really lost.
Bond:-I'll always remember my monastery and my first ship.
Ideal:-I believe in Targun, he's the only cause I know.
Character Goals: Targun has a strong character. He is a confident Aarakocra. He thinks he knows himself quite well. If you ask him, he is selfish and shrewd. He thinks he is wiser than most fools around him. But he is not obnoxious or snob. He likes people.
In reality he is wise; except for the things he is not, for the things he really cares. He is selfish; but then gives everything he has for the things that won't matter to anyone but himself. He is capable; but frankly, he doesn't give a damn.
Player Goals: I am DMing one, and playing in another campaign here in RPGCrossing. I was wondering if I had time for another, and I came upon this thread. I had a monk prepared for another potential game and liked him quite much. So I started to think about him. And creating a character with strong beliefs & ideals, but a loose goal tempted me. A loose background with potential threads to catch on, build upon. Really a young man trying to write his own bildungsroman. Then my wife haven't seen "Gone with the Wind" so we started watching and I -once again- admired Rhett. And combination really fascinated me and so took significant time off and wanted to apply. I am really excited for this. Even if Targun doesn't qualifies it was real fun to build him up in my head.
Bio:Skay'lett was born in the Mistcliffs in Chult. Proving himself quite the prodigy in young age, he attended the monastery. Even though the details are fuzzy and known to only a few people; one day he left the monastery. He left without any thing, any bonds. At least that is what he will tell you. Which is not true. At the least he has the holy Tome of Hundred Handed One. Trying to start a new life, he went to the first city, first port and first ship; and became a seaman. Feeling the sea is just like the sky, he bonded quite easily and well. Now he feels his days at sea is over. He needs to make a aarakocra (man) out of himself. So as his M.O. he got off in the first port, went in the first town and first inn.
RP Sample: "Well, what the **** are you talking about?" Targun slaps the table, nearly spilling all the drinks; his wings open up! "This is the fourth bloody ****ing time you pull a fast one on me!" he slaps his other hand as well, nearly breaking the table. "Where is your left hand all the time, inside your *******?" he gets up, pushing his chair back. "I know one of my two aces is from my sleeve! Where did you get your full set, you piece of incompetent elf-kissing smudge-rubber?"
Looking at the dwarf in front of him angrily, Targun starts laughing!
"You little cheat! *chirp*" downing his drink in one gulp, "More ale for us." he calls out to the bartender.
This was his second day at Balefire Tavern. He come down here to find odd jobs and maybe start his career as an adventurer.

Updates
Player Goals: Playing characters (either as a DM or a player) with a very detailed and solid background is a two-edged sword. If you put every single little detail about your royal family and how they've gotten murdered by a rival one. DM cannot turn them into vampires and liches for his story needs. Your group might go on a very different direction they you anticipate and all those leads will stay untouched.
(Of course on the other hand, some details are obviously appreciated and well-used.)
So, taking my cue from Critical Role and especially Taliesin; I wanted Targun to have opportunities for details in his background, but didn't want to fix them yet. Example:
Targun has left his monastery, why? There is obviously a reason, a very good (for Targun at least) reason. This reason can be a love story. This love story can be with a girl. But also this story might be related to revenge (family) or a plot (against the status quo). Did Targun steal the tome or was it given to him?
These things are certain, we just don't know them yet. Time and opportunity will show them, and we will be ready to seize it. Why make a love(/revenge) story, when a revenge(/love) might fit better?

Character Goals: Make a "name" for himself.
-His family had high expectations of him. When he didn't deliver, he became the black sheep. But in the process learned that you don't need anyone's approval. Only yourself.
-After this understanding, he put himself in the middle of the universe. He might not care for his families expectations of him, but he certainly has many for himself. That is why his goal is to become "a man", that he is proud of.
-This can come with: money, power, recognition. But his current understanding and attitude is: it is all of them combined. And the best way for achieving this is becoming an adventurer.
-When he left the monastery, something happened. He believed in a lost cause. It was so obvious that the cause was lost, nobody would have bet on it. Except Targun. Contrary to his character he fell for it. There is not much to explain why he fell for it. He just did. And he dropped everything for it.
-Probably a similar situation will not happen again. It requires extreme conditions. But it is real safe to assume that the first thing will come to haunt him.

One more thing!

I've said it a few times- but I'll say it again- you all have submitted some really impressive character ideas. In the next day or so, applications close, and... I've gotta say... I've got my work cut out for me!

Thanks to everyone who've submitted so far, and to anyone who'll submit last-second! ;D

Yeah, I don't envy you of having to choose between so many great applications. Good luck everybody!

Shoes or no shoes it's going to be a tough selection.

I don’t want to be in my fuzzy Hobbit feet either! XD

I’m almost done my selection, but I’ve found myself with a list of desired characters one or two larger than I’d consider “small”. To cut or not to cut, that is the question. I’ve been stewing over it all morning and afternoon, and I still don’t know the answer. =3=“

I will respectfully say that go with what is best for the game and yourself. Yes, we'd all like to be in the game, but we wouldn't want to make the game harder for you, or slower for everyone else due to having too many players. And yes, I am aware that I could be one of those on the precipice of being in or out.

@Inuvash255,

My experience is that there is some natural attrition in groups. One option is to start with a larger party - IMO, six is the upper limit. Another is to start off with two parties - I actually did this in one adventure and by the end of the 2nd combat, needed to consolidate the two groups due to player attrition. A third alternative is simply select two or so characters as 'alternates' who could be tapped to join the adventure in the event that someone dropped out.

Yes. Sadly player attrition is a problem at the start of games, so the options purplerook mentions are solid.
