If the party doesn't have a disadvantage in shooting the landed ones, our best bet is to attack them. Otherwise, Ready and melee Attack for when they close to melee range.

Right now, they have numbers (11) and attacks (two/turn) on us.

I'll wait for LeDragon's response, and then Khat will attack either one of the landed ones, or ready a melee attack for the next one to flyby.

Birds have fly-by. Melee attack is melee attack. If the bird is distracted by another foe at the same time you attack him after being ready, that's OK. You can ready and sneak attack.

@GM, I remember during the recruitment, you advised me against turning into something large and heavy for fear of what that would do to our ability to fly. Given that although a giant spider is a large creature, it doesn't have the mass of, say, a dire wolf, would I be able to turn into a giant spider? Secondly, if I can become a spider, can I climb the envelope without causing a problem? I'll change my strategy if not on either count

It's possible PT killed the nearest bird - 11 dmg plus 7 poison if it fails its save - so people may want to wait before posting.

A large spider is fine by me. You can climb the envelope without any roll.

Flanking is an optional rule in 5e; it's in the DMG. It gives ADV to melee attacks only, when allies "are adjacent to an enemy and on opposite sides or corners of the enemy’s space."

Yes. Just stay at least 10 feet away from the edge. Don't forget, the envelope is round, not flat and has a 45 degree slop at half of the distance between center and control.

@LeDragon, I'm going to intentionally not ask about the 'mechanics' of the balloon bag, but I was once in a game where the mechanics were so nasty (DC 15 to slip and fall into a river to be washed away).

It should like the further away from the Crows nest, the greater the chance of falling off. What is balloon material like (e.g., coarse or fine rope netting)? Can you fall and grab it? How about plunging a dagger into it?

Also, how big/nasty are these birds? They are 10ft x 10ft and so large? Could they grab someone and fly off with them? Potentially shove them?

Finally, we've got these harnesses with a pair of 10ft rope sections and hooks. Would it be a Free Object Interaction (FOI) to hook or unhook? Are there places to hook out on the bag?

As an alternative, perhaps tie off a 50ft section of rope to the crow's nest and then the other to a belt.

The envelope is coarse clothing and the nets are coarse nets. Nets can be grabbed easily when falling.
As long as you keep a distance of 10 feet from the edge, I will not request a roll, because the ground is soft.
If you fall, a dagger will only leave a long cut in both the envelope and the gas bag below until you fall into the depth.

They are large and may grab someone to drag them off the envelope.

Hooking/unhooking is an normal action (the system is not that sophisticated than modern ones), but as long as there are nets or ropes on the maps, there are hooks. You can prolong the ropes with your own ones, but I don't advise to cut ropes from the envelope.
