I just thought of a very good game that I believe incorporates most of what you want-The Witcher (the first one, I haven't played the second). Have a look through that (it's very cheap on various sites), and think about what they've done to make what is more or less a fixed story come alive and involve the player far more than 99% of most "sandbox" games that offer unlimited freedom.

But the witcher isn't a visual novel haha. I keep hearing good things about it though, so maybe I can try it and see if I get inspired.

What I would be trying for is to have a interactive book, but with some active gameplay added in. Imagine walking into town, and you see this awesome static artwork, and you can point and click to talk to people or enter buildings - I mean its an old idea, I just want to add some personal touches, and more freedom than you would classically get.

Take a recent example on the DS and a sequel on the 3DS, 999 and Zero's escape. You can choose who to go with, to a point, and those decisions are vital for how your game turns out. But playing all of the seperate options out to the end reveals more and more information, letting you prgress further in a path you thought was over - a nice unique experience, and very well thought out.

I just want to give people the feeling of a classic roleplaying adventure, without having to roll dice or take part in large action sequences or huge combats. I want it to feel like real role playing - the issue is, wether or not I can provide that feeling within the setting the game would provide. Can I let people be evil? How do I motivate a character to follow the path to the main goal? Etc etc.

It's sort of tough to put it in words, but I am feeling very positive and enthusiastic about it. I think given the right tools, it could be quite popular, especially if my idea of letting the player choose some skills and other class option pans out - perhaps you can heal people, and two people get severely injured - you can heal one with magic and bandage the other, but the bandaged one can't help in combat and could possibly die - which would you choose? Giving people tough choices like that would be very interesting to include.

Am I going on about it too much? Hahahaha.

DOes anyone know if the DM is feeling more inspired to put up with us yet?

Also in response to the graphic novel thing, I think there's more crossover than you realise with what you want to do, and how The Witcher plays out
