Overlord

Game NameOverlord
Game SystemDnD 5e
ThemeBringing hope to a hopless word
Flavouradventure, political intruige.rebuilding the destroyed world
Plot SummaryIt has been fifty years since the apocalypse. Fifty years since the lich king waged war against the living. With an army of undead, fiends, and monsters, he brought the world to its knees, killing hundreds of millions in the land of forsena. For ten years he crushed the kingdoms of men, elves, and dwarves. Nothing could stand up to his might. Humankind stood at the twilight of extinction without hope as they huddled into the handful of final strongholds with no chance for escape. For fifty years, one question has puzzled every mortal mind. Why, when the lich king had his fingers around the throat of every man woman and child in the world, had he suddenly withdrawn his forces?

For fifty years, the human race as struggled to rebuild, though they are not united. The elves have vanished, believed to be extinct. The halflings and gnomes have been enslaved by fiend worshiping empire of Falkreath. The dwarves hide in their mountain of Markarth and rarely come above ground. The demi humans are isolated in the kingdom of Solitude, cut off from the world. And nestled like a sleeping tiger, the lich kings kingdom of death, Morthal remains a no man’s land where few venture and fewer return.

Although Whiterun has enjoyed fifty years of peace, all is not well. Beasts and monsters have flourished in mankind’s absence. The farmers who are essential to feeding the population are constantly plagued by troubles. The army simply cannot respond to so many requests on the frontier. The kingdom’s chief warrior, Gazzeff Stonoff has come up with a solution: the world needs heroes.

To that end, he has recruited you, young promising individuals with ability. Your task is simple; help the common people. As a small group of specialists, you are more mobile than the regular army which is handicapped with the bureaucracy of the bickering nobles. Your rewards will depend on the results you achieve, but you’ve been given an opportunity to make a real difference in helping civilization flourish again.

I am looking for five level three characters to save the world

What to expect
No maps. We will be using theatre of the mind
You gain inspiration when you land a killing blow or land a critical hit. They don’t stack so feel free to use them
No rolling for initiative. The order of combat will be boss, players, minions. Whatever player posts first goes first in the round.
Posting twice a week. I would like to keep things moving well. If you don’t post for a while, I will skip you or take control of you.
While i am using the skyrim map, this is not set in the elder scrolls universe. this is a homebrew world

Application

Name:

Race Human, dwarf, Halfling, gone. If you’re a gnome or a Halfling, you are either an escaped slave from Falkreath, or the child of escaped slaves. If you are a dwarf, why aren’t you hiding away with the rest of your kin?

Class: anything from the core rule book, xanthars guide, or eberon. if you are a cleric, you were trained in the holy kingdom of Dawn. If you’re an arcane caster, you came from the magic kingdom of Winterhold

Background: same available sources as above

Backstory

What your characters should know about the world

Whiterun is the fortress city at the center of the continent and capital of Whiterun kingdom. There two other cities in the kingdom called riverwood which is a lumber town providing the capital with wood, and Rorickstead, a mining town. There are numerous villages and farms but they are poorly defended. This is the city you start in. Its population is primarily human, though it does have a number of halflings and gnomes who escaped the empire. Its king is Ramposa, an old warrior who led mankind in the Great War. He has two sons, Mealagant, Lance, and a daughter, Carlota. The city has three massive circular walls separating the city into districts. The outer district is the residential area for peasants. The middle district is for commerce. The center is for nobles and royals.

Falkreath.is south of Whiterun. It was a second city called Helgan. The empire ir rulled by Zemickes and his wife, Esmeree, and openly practices devil worship and slavery. It keeps Halfling slaves as sacrifices for devils, and gnome slaves for crafting magic items due to their natural talents. Falkreath and Whiterun have an adversarial relationship, as the kingdom condems slavery and offers safe haven to any slaves who escape the empire. Falkreath is famous for Azmodeus’ gift, a massive dungeon that spawns an endless horde of monsters within that drop magic stones upon death which can be crafted into magical weapons, wands, and armor.

Dawn is to the north of Whiterun. It is known as the holy kingdom and ruled by a high priestess Lieonese who is the youngest ruler of any kingdom. She was chosen by the goddess herself, and is the strongest divine caster of any kingdom. The kingdom is a theocracy that worships the goddess of mercy. All clerics and paladins are trained in the holy kingdom and sent out as missionaries. While they claim to be righteous, they are very xenophobic of non-humans, and charge exorbitant prices for healing spells. They have been known to hunt down any clerics who offer their miracles for free. Gazzeff has made a deal with the kingdom to allow any cleric hero to waive this expense.

Winterhold is to the north east and is known as the magic kingdom. It is ruled by arcane casters and is the source of most of the magical items in the world, though they charge high prices. Their capital rests in the heart of a never ending blizzard protected by a magical barrier. Seven years prior Winterhold declared war on Windhelm to the south of them, believing they could easily conquer the barbarians who lived there. They soundly defeated and forced to make several painful concessions. It is ruled by the arch mage Bulnoil. His only son Meltorfess is a guest of Windhelm as a hostage.

Windhelm rests to the east. It is renowned for having the hardiest warriors in the land, though also the least civilized. They are a harsh people who value strength above all. Their king is Vanyard, a young man who has only recently accepted the throne after his father’s death. He is known as the white wolf due to his white hair, and his cold calculating nature.

Riften rests to the south east on a large lake. It is the city of commerce, crime, and corruption. It supplies the other kingdoms with most of their luxury goods and has the only navy. It is ruled by the mad monarch Dryst, a very eccentric yet uncannily cunning ruler, though many believe that he is only a puppet ruler and that the city is actually run by crime lords who operate in the shadows. Riften is the wealthiest kingdom and is able to support the most cities. Shors stone is a mining town, and Aivarstead is a lumber town.

Markarth is hidden away in the mountains in the west. It is home to the dwarves and little is known about them as they sealed their doors and hid away during the Great War. It is believed they suffered the fewest losses of any race which has earned some resentment from many humans and earned them the brand of cowards. There have been a handful of their race who have ventured above ground in attempts to reconnect with the world. Little is known about them.

Solitude is an isolated kingdom to the North West. It is cut off from the world by the great canyon of Sarenrea’s fall rumored to be where the goddess was struck down by the lich king, the mountains to the south, and their boarder with Morthal to the east. The main form of contact they have with the world are merchant ships sent by Riften, and a hand full of brave souls who travel through Morthal. It is a kingdom of demi humans ruled by the ape men, though there is a human population as well. It has one fortress city called Dragon Bridge which guards the only bridge across Sarenrae’s fall.

Morhtal rests to the north sharing a boarder with Solitude, Whiterun, and Dawn. Very little is known about the undead kingdom than it is extremely dangerous. Few are brave enough to trespass across its boarders. Fewer still return alive. Those that do tell of a blighted land where the dead roam everywhere. None have located a city or tomb where the lich king lies. Rumor is the kingdom of Dawn is planning on launching a crusade into undead lands, but many fear that this will provoke the lich king to return and finish what he started fifty years ago.

Another interesting campaign idea Togot. Skyrim remains one of my favourite games. Placeholding
Also, are Necromancers a viable option here, or would they be "death-by-pitchforked?"

Given the history of the setting, it would be very challenging to play a necromancer

The idea of having Skyrim become an actual RPG setting, as opposed to an open-world single-player setting, is intriguing...

Race Human.

Class: Fighter (champion)

Background: Outlander

Backstory: Grew up near Riverwood, hunting for food and fur and heading in to the village to trade for supplies. Was raised on legends of the 'bad times' fifty years ago, when the dead walked the earth and the living were their prey. Watched as giants and trolls killed travelers, and swore he would someday put a stop to this...but how? Perhaps, by joining the company of heroes being created, he can make a difference. There are legends that say that once, long ago, Whiterun was home to a group of adventurers with incredible powers. Perhaps the legend can become the truth...

Alignment: Neutral good.

Ideal: Community.

Flaw: Somewhat too trusting of others on the first meeting.

Bond: His parents still live in the hut near Riverwood-he will spend time with them when he can.

Appearance: A bit short for a human. Wears simple green and brown clothing. His facial features are rather plain, with dull brown eyes and hair and rather light skin. Does not wear particularly heavy armor or carry heavy melee weapons, but uses a bow.

Thought I'd give this a go. I've left out some specifics which I can fill in later if this idea fits with the world :-)

Name: Peregrine Babcock
Race: Human
Class: Wizard (could also work as a sorcerer)
Alignment: CG
Background: Hermit

The Tale...
eregrine learned much of his trade in jail.

As a first year student in the college of magic in Winterhold, he found himself locked up after drunkenly boasting to a rather hot tempered Jarl that he had the power to transform rocks into gold nuggets (and then being unable to back up his big talk when asked to prove himself at sword-point by the Jarl’s guards). That was the end of the his college education and any chance of being recognized as an arcane caster but he did still have his spellbook and knew that given enough time, he could unlock its mysteries.

The Jarl was a cruel man and Peregrine paid a heavy price for his insolence. Five years in solitary confinement with only a bail of hay, his spellbook (disguised as a compendium of tall tales) and a frog called Ribbit for company.

There, Peregrine studied and studied, gradually perfecting his trade. Then, one winter's day, about four years into his sentence it happened! The foolish guard charged with bringing the magician’s daily bowl of gruel accidentally left the cell door unlocked!

Peregrine ran from the cell, fleeing like a banshee in the night to the highest watchtower of the Jarl’s fort. The guards who chased him witnessed as Peregrine whispered the words “So long, you fools!” before pulling a small chicken’s feather from the mud beneath his feet and jumping from the tower. He sailed like a leaf on the wind. Across the fort’s moat and vanishing into the snowstorm. Freedom.

Over the subsequent months and years, Peregrine Babcock roamed the city, sleeping in barns and cowsheds. Living off berries, wild fruit, game and the occasional stolen leak. From time to time he accepted small time quests. A lost cat here, a children’s magic show there.

All this time, however, his experiments and learning continued. Behind closed doors his magical abilities grew and grew.

* * *

The messenger rode up to the broken down old cowshed where the wizard was said to be dwelling. Eyeing the curious ramshackle structure he licked his mustache which was still crispy from the effects of the snow barrier. Wizards. Damn them all to the abyss..

"Oh the bone-ache! The bone-ache!" came a voice from inside as the messenger banged loudly on the rotten wood.

The door opened a crack. A wizened and wrinkled face the texture of leather peered through. Though only in his late twenties, the cruelty of jail, vagrancy and the caustic effects of magic components had taken a heavy toll on the wizard's weak constitution.

Wild and frenetic eyes shone eerily from the darkness within, darting from side to side like a startled sparrow. "Yes? What is it?"

The messenger looked at Peregrine in disgust before pushing the scroll toward the mage's beak like nose. What was so special about this revolting barn dwelling hedge wizard? Could there have been a mistake?

The floor and walls of the barn were filled with chalk sigils, circles of protection, telling-bones and hanging bunches of henbane, basil and jasmine. The mage was dressed in ragged robes, crudely crafted from sackcloth. His shoes were nothing more than mud caked strips of scrap leather bound around his feet. His mousy brown hair seemed to bubble from his head like the foam on an overcooked broth and an unkempt beard sprouted erratically from his face like weeds in a graveyard.

"Ahhh yes.. yes.. the bones said we would have a visitor didn't they, Ribbit.. they said.. they said.. or was it the tea leaves?" the wizard muttered to a fat green frog cradled delicately in his thin, dirty hand. He then pulled a crystal knife from within his ragged burlap toga and kissed it before waving it over the signet-sealed scroll. His eyes became wild and his lips started to smack and whisper the unnatural language of magic.

"I see... I see... interesting... interesting... well we can't be having this can we? No no no! Tsk tsk tsk..." the muddy mage trailed off.

Having somehow magically divined its content, the mad wizard froze as though remembering something important and tucked the unopened scroll into is ragged one piece tunic. It immediately fell straight through and landed on the hay strewn floor. The wizard paced back and forward muttering himself, waving one long dirty finger wildly in the air before turning to the frog in his hand, "We'd better back a bag, Ribbit. Yes, yes... a bag. Looks like we're going on a journey eh? Yes.. yes.. a journey. You've always wanted to see Whiterun haven't you Ribbit!"

Ideal: To survive.... and do a little good and spread a little kindness if there is time.
Flaw: Unkempt, slapdash, taste for experimentation goes a little too far. Maybe a tiny bit crazy.
Bond: He will do anything for his pet frog, Ribbit

Technical stuff:
He channels all his spells through a small crystal knife which serves as his athame. This knife is named Barakiel. Peregrine keeps Barakiel in a small leather sheath which hangs from a cord around his neck and guards it jealously. He secretly fears that the Barakiel has become tied to his very life essence and without it his blood will freeze and his bones become brittle as twigs.

Background: Sage (Wizard's apprentice). Einhorn was trained as a wizard's apprentice by the human wizard Corello, who the young gnome met shortly after his escape.

Bond: I work to preserve a library, university, scriptorium,or monastery. (the library of the College of Winterhold).

Flaw: I am easily distracted by the promise of information. Specifically, I have been tasked to find rare books throughout the land, so anything that I can find out related to my search is a priority for me.

Is there a chance that fornsworn exist in this universe or they got destroyed as the Reach didn't have walls or real protection?

Edit: I was thinkning that maybe some tribes took refuge in the caves underground during the apocalypse and roamed the underground..

I think i should clarify something, while i am using the skyrim map for inspiration, this is a home brew world, not elder scrolls. there is a group like the foresworn in it though, they are amazons, but they arose recently. the only survivors of the great war are those who took refuge in the cities i described in the advertisement.

I wanted to make a human barbarian, but looking through my gallery of images I found this image and realized I always wanted to use it but never managed to.

Rurik
right-aligned image
Name: Ruriken "The Fist"
Race: Hill Dwarf
Class: Monk (Open Hand)
Background: Urchin
Alignment: True Neutral

Backstory: In the depths of Markath, the Dwarves managed to survive well during the decade long attack of the Lich King. Their secret was a fierce organization and sturdy walls. As their impenetrable defences kept them safe from the army of Death, they had to guard themselves from the horrors of the underdark. Food rationing was at the heart of the people survivability, and they had to syncronize their hunting excurcions with the reproductive cycles of various horrid cave creatures to sustain the Dwarven settlers.

In these dark times, Ruriken Ulgrinn was one of the guards tasked with protecting the bug jerkey cellars. Unfortunately for Rurik, he always loved gold, and couldn't resist accepting when he was offered to steal food to put it on the black market. Evan after the war ended, the Dwarves were still dubious about resurging. This is why when he and his partners were found out, they were charged with crimes against the drawen race.

The culprits were shaven clean, their jewelry stripped from them, the clan tattoos were fire-scraped from them, they were then expelled by the community by tying them on individual horses, all of this while suffering an exhile litany. Finally the horses were spurred into the horizon, the equivalent of a death sentence.

As Rurik's horse was galloping away, after hours from the exhile, they were attaked by a big feline. Luckily the dwarf managed to get away as his ride was being eaten. Around the ruins of Rorickstead, he found some scavangers that agreed to bring him to Whiterun in exchange for physical labour participating in the human efforts to rebuild their society.

In Whiterun, it took some years for the Dwarf to find his place. He spent years begging and scrapping by, knowing the inside of a cell a couple of times because of his anger issues. Eventually Ruriken filled a niche as a bouncer at the Bannered Mare tavern and as a brawler in underground fights.

Personality: Rurik is split between drawish traditions and the human lifestyle he has been living in for the last eight years. At first he welcomed the xenophobia as the other side of the coin for his transgression, but after some years the citizens of Whiterun began to know him. Never the less, as the exhile litany dictated, he does not use his clan name anymore, does not wear armor or wield axe nor hammer, doesn't eat spiced meat, and defying the stereotype, he doesn't consume alcohol. Keeping up with the prohibitions that his people imposed on him is Rurik's way to mantain a connection with his roots.

Ideal: Community: we have to take care of each other, because no one else is going to do it.
Bond: My town is my home and I'll fight to protect it.
Flaw: I'll do anything for gold.
