Name: Willow Wothbrook. aka Willow the Worthless, aka Weeping Willow
Race:Human
Class:Wizard/illusionist
Alignment:LG
Background:Sage
Personality: Willow is a man who is used to failure. He laments all the years he spent learning magic only to be so mediocre. He is the kind of man who will run into a burning building to save those inside, be be utterly terrified the entire time. despite the hardships and misfortune of his life, he is kind and friendly to others, always eager to be helpful.
Ideal: Helping someone in need is always the right thing to do
Bond: All I want is to make the world a better place
Flaw: I'm a pessimist who drinks my sorrows away without restraint
Hook: When Willow was a young man,he met a wizard who inspired him with his magic. Being the son of a merchant, Willow was able to afford a tutor to teach him the basics until he was old enough to go to a mages college, but despite years of effort and study, he progressed at a snails pace. His parents were killed by bandits, and Willow spent his inheritance on the college fees until he had nothing left and was kicked out with little to show for it. Since then Willow has traveled aimlessly like a leaf on the wind seeking adventure as a way to prove himself, but never finding any. Then he heard about Ten towns and Icewind Dale, an inhospitable place full of danger. Willow thought that to forge someone as weak as himself into something strong,he needed a harsh forge, and the frozen lands with its yetis, orcs, and barbarians seemed the perfect place; the place for those who have nowhere else to welcome them. he has made a humble living entertaining locals with his magic, and helping out as he could, He spends his afternoons sobbing into his mug at the local tavern bemoaning his wasted life. At sixty years old,he is still only a novice spell caster. but he still dreams of going on an adventure to prove himself a worthwhile wizard.
D&D Bio in Brief: I started playing 3.5 a number of years ago with a friend who introduced me to it. I played on the weekends with him and his girlfriend and another friend for a number of years. I learned pathfinder when it came out, and have now made the transition to fifth ed. I have been on the site for a couple years now. I like playing wizards due to the creative possibilities of magic and its uses.

Name: Zoran Dawncaller

Race: Human Variant
Class: Cleric (Light)
Alignment: LN

Background: Acolyte

Ideal: Only by achieving my real mission, will I will help to see the truth and light of the Sun God finally shine.
Bond: Discovering and investigating the remains of ancient Netheril and its teachings is the Way.
Flaw: A small, occasionally unhealthy, obsession with using fire and holy radiance to deal with everyday challenges even when more subtly is required.

Hook:

D&D Bio in Brief: Mostly played d&d since my teens (basic, 2e). Skipped a few editions in favour of Pathfinder and some other systems, have been back for 5E. Love character development a good party to engage with and a strong plot to an adventure and shaping long term settings that have depth. About ten years ago I accidentally found the movie 30 Days of Night on a rainy Saturday afternoon and it was awesome, for the Sat afternoon movie. Excited to read that it was an influence on the new module, together with The Thing. Have read the original Icewind Dale trilogy, but never been into DDo or such, just the setting itself. New to pbp but I write regularly through work and have kept a personal journal for decades. Read fantasy & scifi prolifically and online a lot.

Raithe ak'Terahn, wood elf ranger, is complete. I had fun writing his RP sample, although there's not a ton of dialogue. I look forward to being considered.

Hi all! I updated the original ad to include the most recent applications in the table and to add some notes.

Most significantly this:

I now have the book and I'm busy ingesting it. I can now tell you that at the start of the adventure, Icewind Dale has been cursed by the Frostmaiden (Auril, the goddess of winter) for two years, during which time the sun has only been felt for a couple of hours midday, and then only dimly.

If your character is newly arrived on the scene, they will have had to fight the elements to get here, as Icewind Pass and the Sea of Moving Ice have become increasingly difficult (but not impossibe!) to navigate during this seemingly endless winter and brutal cold. If your character has been living in Ten Towns during this curse, they will have felt the pull of despair and darkness, as for two years there has been no summer, no spring, only night and cold. Travel, commerce, community -- all are strained to the breaking point, as each night before midnight, Auril takes to the sky on the back of a white roc and weaves her spell, a glimmering curtain of light, which prevents the next day's sun from rising. You've been living in another world, really, cut off from from the south, isolated, suffering through what you call the Everlasting Rime
.

If you have already written your application, there's no need to revise your hook to reflect this. I'll assume that if you join the party and we need to make adjustments, we will.

Wow.......thats an interesting start!

I think I'll update my application, as having my gnome being stuck in the Dale these past two years....

....i don't see him heading up there during this just to hunt for an extinct lizard.

Name: Wrthia Stormbringer
Race: Half Orc
Class: Barbarian (Storm Herald)
Alignment: NN
Background: Outlander
Personality: Brash, vulgar, and prone to being a hot head. Wrthia dose not do social graces well. She has managed to learn enough to interact with people and not be thrown from towns, but she still bears the memories of growing up in an orc tribe as apposed to human ones. Still lack of social etiquette aside, The towering woman of muscle can be more then counted on by those that at least she considers to be her friends and allies. On the battle feild she tends to let her more orc-ish side come forth reavling in the chance of battle and bloodshed and the sight of enemies turned to paste by her massive hammer.

Past the rough battle hardened exterior though even she has her issues. Harboring feeling of being cursed and unwanted after being exiled from her clan, and the general treatment some humans give to her kind has left her feeling she needs to keep people at a distance while she tries to figure things out in the new life she has been thrust into.

Ideal: I will win glory in battle fore both my self, and my clan. for my friends.
Bond: My twin brother is part of a group of mercenaries that escort caravans. I would like to see him some day.
Flaw: Violence is the typical solution I find to any problem out there.

Hook: Born along side a twin brother, Wrthia is the daughter of a human mother, and orc warlord. Despite the normal belifes of how such unions come about, the union had been agreed on by the mother's tribe and the war-band leader for mutual trade and gain in the hostile outer lands of civilization. Both Sibling grew up around Orcs and violence thought they took two different paths. Her brother Wrthu (The father was bad with names) Tended to take after his more human side being more refined to a degree in his dealings with others. This would eventually lead to him leaving the clan on his own accord for his own wealth and gain.

Wrthia was far more in line with the Orc Blood that ran in her veins. A wild woman with a love for battle and to fell her enemies it seemed Wrthia did not need much more then to just continue to be a part of the clan she was born into. Sadly fate would have other ideas. Along her body would begin to show strange marking some in the faint shape of lighting, would appear. Her battle cry carried a faint distant sound of thunder and it felt as if the wind subtly swirled about her as she fought. The clan's shamans and seers dubbed her the be "storm-touched" and that in time the storm that raged form inside her would bring destruction upon the clan and all those around her. And so Wrthia was sent into the world on her own after much deliberation, heading to the world of the frozen north to seek battle, glory, and perhaps a place and people to call her own.

D&D Bio in Brief: Been playing on and off again for a few years. Some times it's PbP, some times it's over discord, and quite a few times just around a table with friends. I enjoy when things are a mix between serious, and not so serious. I do my best to get along with the party, try and make sure I'm not doing things to trip everyone else up or get in their way. Love to do combat as well as role-play as well. I'm not always the best a long multi paragraph posting but do put in my best to at least try and match the parties posting habits where I can.

Hey, some academics are REALLY committed to their research. I mean, he wouldn't be the first person to head into some kind of arctic hellscape just to find out what's there.

The way it's explained in the book is that outsiders don't really get what's going on. And there is still some trade in and out. I don't mind him going up there under the flap of some courageous trade caravan and being kind of horrified and stuck once he gets there. I like the idea of a few characters being new to the situation and a few being stuck there for years -- and really that's something we can adjust later.

It could go ether way. He could have gotten stuck up there or just gone up to check out and research the "everlasting" night

I noticed you still have Torchlight marked "WIP". Is there something I'm missing in my application? The hook is reflected in his short bio written next to his picture.

I'm in the same boat! I think if things have been nuts up there for two years, it wouldn't be wise for my Goliath to assume he could just go up there and come back easily.

Maybe he went up two years ago, and got stuck in. I think that'd be a really good way to get that hook into him; he still wants to finish his personal quest- but he's been seriously delayed and is getting stir-crazy!

If there is still SOME trade going on, then Hasim, as a small independent trader, could have been braving the constant snow, to deliver to, and trade with the more remote regions of Icewind Dale.

He's probably missing the burning heat of the desert now!

Ha, jokes on you Cheerio! If Lore knows there's someone casting that crazy-powerful magic not even frostbite will stop him from getting to Ten Towns!

Yeah the intro blurb changes things somewhat for Gandril and his little home town as well. Pretty sure under these circumstances the Sylvanite druids would very clearly suspect Auril and her cultists of stealing the Heartstone Gem since the oak served to hold back Auril's rime and chill, at least within it's vicinity.

In addition, Gandril's departure from Kuldahar to begin his adventure would be at least partially motivated by the guilt of being part of the group that permitted the gem to be stolen, thereby removing the god Sylvanus' influence as a possible impediment to Auril's plan.
