[D&D-5e] A siege in Karameikos

Character Name: Soveliss Liadon Race: Wood Elf Gender: Male Class: Ranger (All the way to 20) Age: 197 (Appears in his late 20's) Trait 1: I feel tremendous empathy for all who suffer. Trait 2: I place no stock in wealthy or well-mannered folk. Money and manners won't save you from a hungry owlbear. Bond: My tribe is the most important thing in my life, even when they are far from me. Ideal: Free Thinking: Inquiry and curiosity are the pillars of progress. Flaw: I'm a sucker for a pretty face. Background: Soveliss was born to one of the nomadic wood elf tribes roaming the world. From an early age, the young elf took part in the defense of the tribe, acting as a sentry to guard the tribe's homes against the raids of goblins, bandits, and wolves. It was here that he learned the ways of his people, from archery to the silent movement that elves are known for. Over the years, as he ascended into adulthood, the dangers facing the tribe grew steadily, until, following one raid in which the defensive lines were broken and goblins almost broke into the settlement proper, the tribal elders reluctantly acknowledged that they could no longer live alone in the world. Soveliss was dispatched to the nearby human settlement of Veseya, hoping to secure a meeting between humans and elves, only to arrive to find it under an attack of it's own. Entering via a side gate, the elf was swept up in the defense of the town. During a particularly harrowing moment of the siege, when the gate was breached, Soveliss single-handedly brought down an Orc captain leading the attack, piercing his dark heart with an arrow. Seeking no acclaim for the feat ("I would have done the same thing defending my people," He repeatedly remarked), his action was noted by several of the defenders, who promptly sang his praises loudly to everyone who would listen. RP example: Chaos hung over the battlefield like a veil. Everything was obscured by a faint layer of smoke, making even the keen elven eyes of Soveliss Liadon strain to identify the orcs and goblins pouring through the shattered gate. Standing against the charge of beasts that plagued the nightmares of men, dwarves, and elves the world over, a mere twenty brave men, militia, armed with makeshift spears and shields. He was fairly sure that one of the men's shields had begun life as a carriage wheel, though through the smoke he couldn't be entirely sure. As he watched from a nearby rooftop, Soveliss couldn't help but feel a sense of admiration, these humans, defending their homes and families, standing against a foe that they couldn't hope to best. Several streets away, a squad of the town guard, more professionally armed and trained men, were hurrying to reinforce the gate, but it would be several minutes before they arrived, and the defenders didn't look as if they had that long. He thought briefly of his own home, of fighting against these types of raids for decades, even though the forces attacking this town seemed larger, more organized. How many times had he experienced this moment, the critical point at which a battle could be won or lost? He remembered his training, under the tutelage of his tribal elders, that sensing the tides of battle, of finding the right point to attack or defend for maximum effect. Now was another moment to act. But not to defend. Jumping down from the low thatched roof, the lithe elf sprinted to the line of men who were staring down their enemies as they came on, snarling and howling their primitive war-cries. Goblins and orcs only respected strength, and wouldn't be moved by the determination of the defenders. So in order to buy time for the town guard to arrive, there was only one course of action. Stepping through the uneven line of humans, he withdrew a white-fletched arrow from the quiver at his back, nocking it to the string of his longbow, and drew it back. Bringing the arrow to his cheek, he took careful aim, exhaled briefly, and released. The orcs, not expecting to be shot at, were surprised, checking their mad charge for just a moment. The humans, not expecting assistance, gasped aloud as the sharp twang of the bowstring reverberated through the air. But nobody was as surprised as the orc captain who was at the head of the charge, swinging a huge cleaver around and whooping his warcries for all to hear. The powerful arrow, aimed with all of the skill that near a hundred years as an archer had given Soveliss, pierced the crude iron plate covering his chest. It dug through skin, flesh, and bone, piercing the captain's black heart, and proceeded out through his back, protruding from the back plate of his armor. Giving a gasp of surprise, it looked down in confusion at the shaft protruding from his chest, gave a look of shock, and tumbled to the ground. Slinging his bow quickly over his shoulder, the young elf drew the long, thin blade at his back and, turning to the surprised humans behind him, smiled reassuringly. "If we charge now we can hold them!" He exclaimed, and with that, turned and dashed off towards the suddenly less fearsome orcs and goblins.

Story:

Gerard is your typical Rakasta, only more so. He's been more places and you've even heard of. He adpoted the life of a bard to earn his way around (and became quite good at that), but his real passion is history. Throughout his travels he has studied and documented the cultures and pasts of many places, often transcribing tales and later retelling them in his shows. He's currently in Veseya, earning enough to keep him for when he crosses the border, but when the bandits came in and messed up the place, he put in his hand to help. The sooner the siege ends the sooner he can leave, not to mention a little extra gold.

But rumors have been a flutter that something bigger has been happening here. Attacks are not uncommon in these parts, but theses bands of goblins seemed particularly stone-headed. He was not a stranger to a fight, and managed to end a few goblins as they rushed the walls. Apparently quite a few people noticed, and he's been summoned to another tavern by Lord Serne. Wanting to know what these goblins might have been after, he decided to go along with things for now, and have answered the summons for now.

Gerard sat on a rock playing his pan flute in sporadic tunes as he often did while thinking. He wasn't far from the bar he was playing at the other night, but when he went to see if there was a spot for him tonight he found it closed. Not surprising really, a lot of places have been in trouble lately, given the state of things, but it only made it harder on him. He couldn't leave yet, there were still packs of goblins roaming about and he'd rather not put the entire five months work at jeopardy if but a week would clear the roads.

So he sat here, taking in all what he heard about these past few days. Goblins come and go every few years as goblins do, trying to steal honey from the beehive without incurring too many stings. But no matter how many arrows pierced the scraps they tied together and called armor, the ones behind them would clamor over the dead and keep rushing forward. They didn't get away with much regardless. Goblins are a very dense being.

However according to the locals the recent attacks have been rather malicious. Very rarely have goblins gathered in so many numbers, or have attacked with such ferocity. It indeed doesn't make much sense for them to have kept coming after the first few waves failed to make any progress, but again, goblins haven't much sense for that. But something about them seemed more than that. They were more organized in their attacks, more determined than usual as it seems. One would definitely say they wanted more than the usual sacks of gold, that they could find in much easier encampments, the weary traveler perhaps.

Gerard played a few notes to focus his thoughts, but just as he was beginning to drift into deep concentration, a messenger came rushing.
"I have been looking everywhere for you, heavens what are you doing here on the edge of town! A summons from Lord Serne, he wants to offer his gratitude for your services in the recent seige. You'll find the arranged time and place inside."
Begrudgingly Gerard tipped the boy a silver, and ripped open the letter with the claw of his forefinger. The place was a rather large tavern in the center of town, and the time was in two hours, just before evening struck and the crowds came. With some luck he might get a spot in tonight's entertainment there, earn back his losses for the coming week, but for now, he needed to hear what Lord Serne had to say about the goblins, and find out what it is that they were after, or at least, if they really were after anything worth knowing about.
