Plot SummaryA newly obtained Firefly Vessel is prepared to set off into the black. Ever sail in a Firefly?

Characters are joining a crew of folk who want to get to work on their own out in the black. All characters will want to be on the crew.
Timeframe will be just after events of Firefly T.V. Series Final Episode and prior to Events of the Motion Picture “Serenity.”


The Hook
Sometime in your past, you befriended a rather unique character. You will need to mention this relationship in your bio/history. It can be secreted if you desire. GM will have to "approve" this relationship.
You received a wave that he has passed on, and left you part ownership of something his short 'Last Will & Testament' says is quite valuable if you know how to use it. The game begins with you arriving on Ares to claim what is yours.
You only knew him as "The Fox", but he went by many names in the past. Here's a short description of the man:
Dashing, intelligent, and confidence building, Fox is the quintessential example of a natural born leader. Initially a simple freighter captain who tried very hard to stay out of the war he could see brewing years ahead of others who became a fairly successful rancher. He was specifically recruited as a privateer and succeeded beyond expectation in that role. Forty-six ships captured and not a single life lost in the process. His prizes added almost three dozen ships to the Independent’s ad hoc merchant fleet and when the war was over, left him branded as either a brilliant swashbuckling hero or a blatant traitor.


Game Mechanics
What 'type' of game will it be?
Game will be typical of the Firefly/Serenity theme. Players’ characters will be part of crew – a team. Each should have motivations and or reasons to have joined a crew, and to stay part of one. Obviously, these motivations and reasons do not have to be known by other characters.

How many Players are you looking for?
4-6
Essentials are: Captain, Pilot, and Mechanic. Others are Doc type, Public relations/fence, or anything. No companions or Psychics.

What is the characters' starting level?
Greenhorn

How much gold or other starting funds will the characters begin with?
This is determined by the starting level of the game, which is Greenhorn. Point buy system - 42 points for Attributes, 62 points for Skills.

Are there any particular character “things that you want... or do not want?
Some Traits, Complications may be limited to minor. “Reader Trait is off limits. Mute complication cannot be chosen.

What races, subraces, species, etc. are allowed for your game?
Uh-duh. Human only please. No aliens in the ‘Verse, people are weird enough as it is.

Will you be doing all of the die rolling during the course of the game ?
All players will do their own die rolling. GM will roll for all NPCs and all nasty ‘Verse surprises.

Are there any homebrewed or optional/variant rules that Players should know about?
Yes. They are listed in the Game thread.

Is a character background required? Are you looking for anything in particular?
Yes. Characters Backgrounds are up to players, though should be looking to be part of a ship's crew. The “Hows” and “Whys” of this is strictly up to the player.
GM reserves right to “suggest” changes be made before game start for better “flow” of game.

Are your Players restricted to particular rule books and supplements?
Yes. These are the books I have, and all are allowed.
-Serenity RPG Core Rules Book
-Big Damn Heroes Handbook
-Six-Shooters & Spaceships
-Cortex Shipyards, Volume 1 & 2
Character Submission:
Need name, Age, Sex, background, and general idea of skill set (like complications, traits, etc.) you want your character to have. This can all be blended together in a paragraph or two as I'm not picky. Character generation will take place after your player has been accepted (though it you wish to get a head start, feel free to do so, but this will not sway acceptance into game).

About the GM and About this Game:
This Campaign/Game is a reboot in a sense. It was running and died when RL took away my job, and made my work/life balance work/work and no balance. 3 + years later, I'm miss the Firefly/Serenity Verse, so I'm starting anew.

Lastly: No dice rolling in the Advertisement Thread. Shouldn’t be a problem since Cortex rules are based on “Point Buy” system.

Description:
There are few that could mistake this particular gnarled mountain of muscle and fat for anyone but Gareth Yeoman. Always the biggest man in the room, this freak of nature towers over his peers. Upon his weathered face, he wears a perpetual frown that makes him look ten years senior. The veteran's harrowing grey eyes are cold and life less, as if he had perfected the art of the thousand-yard stare. His jet-black hair is long and unkempt, as well as typically greasy and mangy from long hours of working on ship's engines. Despite these unsightly aspects, they all pale in to his defining feature. Lasting mementoes from the war, horrific burn scarring. It covers the left side of face, with the cheek almost eviscerated down to the bone and naught but charred sinue to bare. His bare body is likewise complete mess, with not a clean patch in sight and more than a third of his flesh warped by burns. Those patches of skin that are not burnt are covered in the veteran's crude tattoos, most amateur in their application but all rich with memories and meaning. Roses down the left forearm, a detailed coat of arms across his back, a nude young lady on his right bicep and a plethora of other peculiar etches. Countless other scars web their way both under and above the ink and across the muscular form, the most recent of which are a healing leg injury and the unmistakable marks of several gunshot wounds.

Gareth’s limited assortment of attire ranges from drab fatigues to gaudy and colourful Hawaiian shirts. He seems indifferent to fashion, pragmatically favouring clothing for its durability, protection or simple cheapness. After all, as a seasoned grease monkey Gareth’s clothes tend to quickly become torn or dirty. There is one signature wardrobe that piece this giant dons, an old Alliance standard issue cold weather jacket from the war. Perhaps not as ironic as the infamous “Brown Coat”, this grey jacket never the less makes a bold statement. No veteran from either side still wears the old colours lightly. The garb still bares several distinct patches on its sleeves as well some more obscure ones. Gareth isn’t one to make small talk about the war, however with a little investigation it is not difficult to determine the meaning of most the patches.

Personality:
Upon first impressions, Gareth Yeoman is the perfect cocktail of anti-social behaviour. Whether nature, nurture or large helping of post-traumatic stress disorder is to blame matters little now. Gareth is a creature of habit, running on instinct and unlikely to change. It's initially confronting, but the man is as predictable as clockwork once one discovers what makes him tick. When ordinary folk gaze upon the unsightly monstrosity they see an unthinking brute, and this gruff bastard does little to rebuke such notions. However, Gareth far from stupid or irrational. He is well travelled, street savvy, proficient in several trades and is able to offer insight into most circumstances, even if it just to air grievances about one of the many group he holds prejudices against. Gareth's pragmatism and straight forward outlook on life, is probably derived from his dire lack of empathy and distain for the intricacies of human interaction. The gruff mechanic takes things at face value, distrusting those whom he sees as making a living from lies and honeyed words over honest trades. Despite this, he ironically he seems at home in the very places he openly despises most, the rough outskirts and seedy underbelly of the 'verse.

Assets:
Tough as Nails (Major Asset): Gareth has been beaten, stabbed, shot, set alight and even survived his tank’s fiery destruction during the war. He is one hard man to kill.
Ain’t Got Time to Bleed (Major Asset): Rumour has it that during the Second Athens Campaign, Gareth continued to operate his weapon despite being set on fire. The fact that there are people that seriously believe this urban legend is testament enough to his die hard persona.
Intimidating Manner (Minor Asset): Looking like a walking corpse tends to put most folk off.
Fightin’ Type (Major Asset): Gareth has been a fighter his whole life. From the mean streets of his youth, to the bloody battlefields of the Unification War and now in whatever fine mess he has gotten himself into this time.
Mechanical Empathy (Minor Asset): Gareth always understood machines better than people.

Complications:
Ugly as Sin (Major Complication): Ever since suffering third degree burns to half his face and body, Gareth hasn’t really been a hit with the ladies.
Branded (Major Complication): Being a proud Alliance Veteran usually isn’t something to be ashamed of. That is unless of course you are in the business of crime and most of your colleagues fought for the other side.
Chip on the Shoulder (Major Complication): Gareth has a rather overt way of expressing his frustrations.
Cold as the Black (Minor Complication): Empathy has never really been this bruiser’s strong suit. I guess the war does that to some folks.
Memorable (Minor Complication): His significant facial scarring and enormous stature makes Gareth easy to spot in a crowd.

Description: Dark golden hair drapes across Tristan's shoulders, the bangs having a tendency to hang in a curtain over his forest green eyes. Narrow shouldered and lacking muscle, it is far from surprising for Tristan to find himself mistaken for a young woman when only a side or rear view is taken. Lines of lean muscle tone his arms and shoulders, the definition of chest and stomach likely more the result of the lack of fat than any particularly arduous activity.

History:
There are two types of people who come from Lilac. The families who have managed to claim land that is not burnt barren by the sun or torn and sundered through drought. They live not quite decadent lives but not far, their work suitable to sustain a life style that allows those niceties of the inner planets such as gatherings with feasts and entertainment or the latest fashions, which may or may not be true to those they are trying to mimic. Tristan, however, was not one of these.

Tristan was not quite an orphan seeing as how both his parents are alive and very much wanted to keep him around... and alive. However, destitution's shadow was a curse that never was never far from their minds. As such, the young man eventually found himself a 'group' of misfits who all grifted their way into extra food rations or whatever nicety the latest haul could afford. It was here that he found a true 'home', if a run-down, condemned old building could be considered as such. The boys scavenged and looted, distracted and stole, and just about did whatever they could to keep themselves from dying off.

There was never a true 'leader' to the group of yung'ins but Tristan often kept those organized in a way as to benefit the whole. Setting daily tasks or organizing the latest 'heist' all with the mindset of one day escaping the hellhole that is Lilac and making something of himself.



Personality:
Tristan has come into his own over the last few years, growing that confidence and ego that comes with making something of oneself. In this, he carries himself with an air of grandeur that is accompanied with the best clothes he can afford at the time.

In conversation, he is rather good-natured and friendly though his smiles never quite seem to reach his eyes. There is always a want for more, a need to be doing something... A fear of having nothing.

Assets:

MajorLeadership - While his group of misfits never quite had a leader, Tristan was the one who often planned and motivated the others into executing their given tasks to 'perfection'. At the end of the day, it was Tristan who made sure everyone was getting their cut.

MajorTalented (skill) - Skill undecided. Will update soon.

MinorAllure - Perhaps if Tristan's growth had not been so chaotic nutrient-wise, he may have ended up far more alluring or, perhaps, something far worse. However, he is as he is. A lithe, golden-haired young man with just a good mixture of dashing and daring.

MinorNatural Linguist - Accents. It started with the accents. The ports on Lilac were filled with those who managed their way out to their little hellhole from all across the universe and it was Tristan who often got them chatting. A bit of a drawl here or perhaps picking up on the latest slang, he was quick to interject himself into whatever crowd and quickly seem as if he were one of them, at least when it came to talking...

MinorMighty Fine Hat Item Undecided at this point. Playing with ideas.

Flaws:

MajorBleeder - Perhaps genetics or, more likely, the constant surrounding himself with chemicals and who knows what else while scavenging about ports and lesser frequented areas has left Tristan with quite the disability. What is inside of him wants out and, by that, I mean that once he is wounded he just cannot stop bleeding without assistance.

MajorWeak Stomach - Death was not an uncommon sight on Lilac, especially among the urchins the boy ran with but... Tristan never managed to build up any form of a tolerance to it. Perhaps due to his own fears of being one of them, he has always had a tendency to just faint at the sight of anything that might be considered 'gorey'

MinorAmorous - A childhood of mistreatment has left its mark on Tristan and he has never been able to get passed that need to be loved... Or at least, appreciated.

MinorEgo Signature - In his youth, Tristan was a big fan of stories of tales of good-natured bandits, knights, and heroes. He especially loved the stories where the protagonist left their mark on their victim as a way of taking claim for the deed. It is these legends that roll through his mind as he leaves behind [TBD] after every 'crime'.

MinorGlass Jaw - Avoiding fights as to avoid bleeding to death has served Tristan well in that he has not yet been murdered. Unfortunately, it has also left him lacking in anything that might resemble being able to take a hit. He has a tendency to just crumble beneath any onslaught.



Player Notes:
Kind of busy getting kids ready for bed. Just getting a layout set up for this. Will fill it in as soon as I have a moment without children yelling.

@BustaHemo - great so far. Need background/history of your character as well as the tie-in or connection with "The Fox." The assests and flaws are needed, but I'd like to get a feel for who your character is, personality, what makes 'em tick, that sort of thing.

@BustaHemo, Hack, & ghost6442 - Here is a link to the game forum. Head over there and finish out your characters and sheets fully.

@ghost6442 - The sheet is 4 points over on skills. This is probably due to you playing Skye in the past and her getting improvements up from Greenhorn level.

@Bustahemo - Is there a specific "position or slot" you want Tristan to have on the crew? As it looks now, I see him as a "fence", or job getter for the crew. With leadership, I'd say Captain, but the age and lack of experience on a ship and in the black make that a high improbability. Also, the site has a character sheet for Serenity RPG, so you can plug everything into it.

I was thinking that he would be the face/job getter, yeah. Eventual captain but definitely not from the get go... he lacks the experience and know how to do it well.

I'm posting my interest. Actually looked at the Serenity RPG Core Rules Book back when it first came out but didn't have the cash to buy it. Luckily, it's on the web in as pdf My favorite characters from the Movie/TV show was Jane and Kaylee.

Thought about making a gunslinger/mechanic but we already have a mechanic so might just go with gunslinger/Pilot, or just stick with Gunslinger. Will look over the character creation rules to see it that is possible.

Or maybe just go with a Pilot that can shoot since it is a needed class.
