[PF-1e] The Forsaken Plane: The Plane of The Elder Evils

@Xian: I have seriously enjoyed playing with you in out of the abyss. I am a newcomer to pathfinder, only just starting to play in my first game about a month ago. Do you think a relative rookie to the pathfinder ruleset would be able to effectively play a 7th level character? Also, I looked, but did not see what the expected posting rate was for the game.

I am DMing a 5e Strahd game that has been going strong for well over a year and I love some gothic horror! Thanks for any info!

Welcome! Absolutely you would be able to effectively play. The game is not centered on mechanics/roll play as much as it is on role play and decision making. In fact, it is one of my favorite aspects of this setting is that it is designed not to allow players to roll their way out of situations, but force them to make the tough choices or decisions.

In terms of posting rate, the posting rate for this game usually hovers at 1-2 per week. It may pick up a bit during combat sequences or similar situations.

Looks good enough for you to join the ice breaker. I will add you to the list of attendees to the ice breaker and have at it! There are some rough spots, but we will look to smoothing and working those out as we go.

Much like MundayKnight, the concept itself has some rough spots, especially in terms of integration into the world, but those are relatively minor as the character concept is for the most part complete. As such, I will add you to the list of attendees for the ice breaker thread.

@All- Just so I clarify this one more time, The Planes/Dark Powers does not actively do things like send monsters into other planes (in fact the contrary) and the extent of their actions is to bring those that they select to the planes and for mysterious and inscrutable reasons. While it is a bit of reading, even for those who have been selected to proceed into the ice breaker, this thread is a good primer for the world in which you will be entering and it can help fill or smooth some of the gaps as you bring your characters to this world.

Yet those who turn to evil on the Forsaken Plane are not poor, misunderstood souls damned through no fault of their own. Their selfish natures perverts simple wants and needs into obsessive lusts and they earn their damnation through the commission of horrid crimes. Those damned are all the more monstrous for the empathy one might feel for them, not in spite of it. Even when forced to face their transgressions, most damned remain or choose to remain obstinately blind to their own failings and faults, instead lashing out for perceived wrongs and persecution. Those damned to the Forsaken Planes bound not unlike Tantalus in the underworld, tormented by their greatest desires. This is the point where the characters come in, as stated there is no such a thing as true neutral. Every sentient being has a tendency one way or the other on the ethical and moral axes.

The Powers have drawn the characters for a purpose. For the villainous, The Powers will seek to test how far they will go to fulfill their greatest of desires... to see whether they will choose salvation over damnation by denying their greatest desire. In character, this means that the character must find thing to things that would cause them to reconsider... realistically... fulfilling their greatest desire.

For the virtuous, The Powers have chosen them not because that they are immaculate or incorruptible. The Powers bring the virtuous to the Forsaken Planes because they possess moral flaws or fault lines that are strong enough to cause a true dilemma when the virtuous battle corruption so that they must choose between maintaining that virtue and something the value or care for very much. The fear of loss because the shadows of greed and lust that easily can turn down a dark path, that once it has a hold will not easily let go.

Spells and abilities that detect ethical alignment (law-chaos) functions normally, but no magic can directly and accurately detect the moral alignment (good-evil axis). By shielding evil, mortals/characters must now rely solely on their judgment, to make choices on those judgments, and ultimately live with those consequences. Good and evil are locked in an eternal struggle. Those who preserve their innocence are subtly protected from the forces of darkness, while those who commit evil acts risk falling to these ethereal powers, their minds and bodies slowly warping to reflect their new inner corruption. Those who wholly embrace the lures of The Powers and the evil can and will find themselves bound to the Plane in prisons of their making. (and become NPCs)

This is the essence of the Forsaken Plane, where innocence and virtue battle corruption and evil. Where love can destroy or redeem. Where magic cannot overcome morality and divine justice or whatever The Powers may be comes to all.

My muse continues percolating.

 

Refined Take Name: Elaenia Carren Race: Human Class: Sorceress, Fey (sylvan) with a wolf. A summon-y, witch-y sorceress. The feeling is almost Ranger. Alignment: LN. L: She believes there is a social structure and fundamental order to the world, but not that it is particularly just/fair. N: She would like to be good, but is not immune to the corrupting nature and temptation of power or the traps of resentment and bitterness. Appearance and Personality: Wavy, dark hair, green eyes, petite, pale skin. She wears sturdy, practical clothes suited to her regular traveling. She exudes a woodsy-vibe, like a little-green-riding-hood all gown up, say late 20's, and jaded on a lifetime of prejudice against her magical nature. Elaenia can't help but feel that the more often she is noticed, the more frequently she needs to deal with some sort of inclement situation; so she really tries not to draw attention to herself. This is made troublesome by the dual issues of a natural gravitas and a wolf that also tends to draw attention. She has a tattoo of the State-Seal on her left forearm that signifies her status as an authorized magic user bound to the state (she typically keeps this mark covered, unless she feels the rare need to demonstrate her authority). Place of Origin: “Hofstra” seems a bit too dramatic (though I'd happily RP this, as an aside), but a township of similar size and means in Dementileu. Background bullets: Inherently magical, with her affinity for nature having broad impact on her personality Family of low-craftsmen (ie: working-class, and not on the "upper" portion of that spectrum) Discovers her ability to magic, and is unable to hide this fact successfully (age 9) Persecuted by her community for said magical aptitude, despite having done no harm Once old enough to understand that her family suffers for her stigma, she leaves (age 13) She spends a rather miserable period trying to make her own way, and encounters the first iterations of her habit of substance misuse. She eventually seeks out aid from the state. (age 14) She is routed through a branch of the Inquisitors that specializes in scouting, information gathering, and limited “support functions” for military. While training, the royal kennels become a place of refuge for El (a slice of the wild that she feels such affinity towards while in the city) and Arric, the Kennel-Master takes her under his wing. Graduates (age 17) and receives her tattoo. She is partnered with Tanner Jurst, a young inquisitor, to carry out her new duties. They develop an “incredibly close” bond over the next four years. Tanner dies (in front of her) in the course of her duties, leaving her bereft. Arric, noting her despondency, gives puppy-Rem to her to raise in the hope it will have a therapeutic effect. This is a ploy that ends up working exceptionally well. Most recently she has been scouting the Black Wolves, and is returning to report [secret 1] when passing The Dancing Elephant. She understands justice to be only coincidentally related to power. Inquisitive by nature, see enjoys the semi-solitude of her missions as a chance to explore the world and find happiness as she is able. Struggles (with debatable success) at balancing her problematically magical nature and her desire for social inclusion. Goals: Player goal: I want to try to develop her current struggle with using magic as a participating member of society with the natural flow of the game honestly. ie: will she flaunt her power publicly (in the face of stigma), will she choose a solitary route (only embracing herself in the absence of broader community), will she embrace society at the cost of her individuality... or something else entirely. Character goal: She desires freedom from persecution and prejudice. It will be interesting to see if she alienates herself, earns status, or takes it by force. A Few [Good (and not so good)] People: Companion: Rem, a wolf and El's most loyal friend. Mentor: Arric Bollen, the Royal Kennel-Master. Brawny and stoic, he always has wisdom to offer. Also, he is the individual that united El with Rem (who had been intended as breeding-stock for a new line of war-dogs). Friend: Tanner Jurst (DECEACED). First true friend, and lover, Tanner succumbed to wounds sustained while investigating an infestation of giant spiders. Friend: Shar Esten, chandler. Resident of the capital, El and Shar met coincidentally while she was under instruction of the inquisitors. An unlikely rapport developed almost instantly. Though they see each other rarely now, it is a bond that both still value. Enemy: Vice-chancellor Kellin Val, personal aid to the High Inquisitor. Elaenia reminds him of his daughter, who received “therapy” from the state for her magic that eventually lead to her suicide. He takes every opportunity to actualize this animus. Shhhhh...: Known: An important piece of information regarding the leadership/organization/positioning of the Black Wolves. Unknown: That Kellin Val under-represented the hazard/extent of the “small spider problem” that got Tanner killed, as well as took extra effort to ensure Elaenia and Tanner were tasked to it. Individualisms: She has a distinct recollection of running away from home to detach her stigma from her family. She resents, perhaps unfairly, that they didn't [try to] "stop" her. She detests magical-charlatans of all sorts and believes their lies worsen the condition of "honest" magic-users. This antipathy extends to actual magic users whose actions create a culture that is hostile to her. Elaenia does not like being in the center... of rooms, crowds, relationships, you name it - like some sort of existential claustrophobia. She finds comfort in the between/transitional spaces of life/being. (A bit of social anxiety disorder). Very distinct tattoo of state-seal on left forearm. Occasionally drinks/smoke/inebriates to excess. Plus: what aspect of your character attracted the attention of the Dark Powers to your character? A combination of [potential, at least] power/charisma, a degree of bitterness towards her fellow humanity (and all the other races that make up society), and a certain disregard for others suffering (an "I suffered, why should it be an issue if others suffer as well/additionally" type of attitude. not that she it totally callous....yet) make her a ripe target for corruption.

I totally endorse this game as the writing has been impeccable and Xian weaves quite the story, if my plate wasn't already fully I would definitely be playing in it. I can only hope that at some point in the future should my load lessen it will coincide with an opening. Make yourselves and app and get in on this adventure

• Hidden magic: While he is a wizard, he advertises himself as a wandering scholar to avoid the lynchings that come when some common people see a wizard.
• Demonic origins: Kin'ta is actually less evil than he seems, but something about his heritage makes everything he does worse than would be expected based on his actions.
• Haughty: Having been raised by proud spellcasters, Kin'ta retains his pride even if it is sometimes unjustified.
• Ethical: Kin'ta learned fundamental truths about the world and magic, he believes that lying or cheating people is beneath his station, and that untruths are more dangerous to magicians than regular people.
• After being summoned to the Forsaken lands, Kin'ta begins to believe the ancestor that tainted his bloodline is from the Forsaken Lands (likely to be mistaken)

@prometheous100 - Thanks for the interest! Please look at the primer material that have been provided in the original advert and the start of the current recruitment effort to help you flesh out and make a character that will fit into the Forsaken Planes. In short, as I have mentioned to others in the thread, The Forsaken Planes does not actively interact with the other planes and conversely no one can travel freely between the planes or know of its nature.
