Great Denizens of RPGX,

After a longer than planned hiatus, I am able to return to engage in my favorite past time of story-telling and hope to have a group of 5-6 people to join me as I revive one of my favorite games and settings.

Please refer to the introduction for the atmospherics of this game and the main interest in the game is fun and to development of a complex and compelling Gothic Horror story narrative. It is very much a "role-play" versus a "roll-play" game.

I also have an unorthodox method for player selection that may be unfamiliar to veterans and new players to the site alike and may not be for everyone. The initial application in this thread will simply be a post of the basic demographic information (race, class, appearance), a description of their personality / personal motivations, and a BRIEF backstory of the character that focuses on the 2 or 3 formative events that defined their personality and motivations.

Once this is completed, I will send you a PM for access to a thread where you and whoever else has made the initial cut will go and interact to resolve a situation together for the remainder of the selection period. The resolution of the situation is not as important as for me to see how you as a player and character interact with the others and me in storytelling. In the past, this has been helped me to better assess these things than a one time writing sample. All of the OOC for this thread will this recruitment thread so I can keep the main game thread and folders clear.

Hopefully, all of my RPGX muscle memory will be back and I can deliver a engaging experience. I still do not have a good sensing of my pacing yet, so the duration of recruitment is not set at this time. Thanks for the interest! Onward!

A Ravenloft esque game where we don't have to be from Golarion? I'm interested.

I know PCs are supposed to be the heroes here but how do you determine "hero"? Is an evil PC fighting against the elder evil and the corrupting nature of the plane heroic enough or does it need to be good aligned?

Ultimately, it is the decisions and the motivations for those decision that underpin that determination... and in the case of the Great Powers, who can tell? Examples of what you are describing could be Thanos of Titan (MCU) and Ozymandias of Watchmen (DC) that both did unspeakable things in the name of the greater good. Even at personal cost, spiritually and emotionally. This is a particularly complex and challenging character to play in a non-Ravenloft game, it is even more so in one. However, if you are up to such a challenge, I welcome it and your character personality and motivation should be reflective of the tension between these tendencies.

I see where you said this plane is low magic but I see any Piazo class is available. How exactly is the magic limited? I also saw where one of the previous applicants used some Dreamscarred Press material. Is DSP material on the table or is it case by case or flat out banned? I'm leaning towards a Dread or Cryptic in DSP material or failing that possibly a Witch or Shaman.

As I stated in the initial advertisement, I am not opposed to the use of 3PP material to help define your character as long as narrative consistency is maintained and that the material is not too much at odds with the setting. Having said that, I have permitted thing that were at odds for a well developed character that had narrative potential, from the writer and character. An example was a Summoner that fused with her eidolon into essential an anime Magical Girl (ala Sailor Moon).

The low magic setting means that there is not a plethora of magical items and artifacts to be found and spells/spell casting is not a common occurrence. There will be more in the lore, but this also applies to even nonhuman core races...

Finally, I have permitted DSP classes and familiar most of the legacy classes (to include Dread and Cryptic) and they remain on the table on a case by case basis. I want people to play classes that they want and be invested in their characters, but also want remain thematically and narratively consistent as possible.

Your presentation and character narrative is foremost and if it requires 3PP material to realize, I can work with that. Just be forewarned, not all powers and abilities may function quite how the player or the character expects or thinks... or the Dark Powers may exact a price for their use... [insert evil laughter here]
