[D&D-5e] Purveyors of the New Land

If it's UA, I'm cool with it. Your characters can be whatever you feel you want them to be. The story will start with an open job call you all would have responded to, so you can make a sailor, adventurer, scholar, etc.

I just got back from a work trip. Tomorrow I'll edit the OP with interest placeholders and a bit more of a prompt from which you guys can all shape your characters.

Race: Human Variant (I'm thinking (maybe) that med armor master will remove the penalty for swimming in med armor. Since it removes the penalty for disadvantage on stealth I thought it may be pertinenet.medium armor master. )
Class: Mystic - Awakened Immortal
Concept: A tanky-ish melee character that will switch between heavy damage output and high defense. With auxiliary support for building and repairing ships.

Appearance:

 

Lavy has long brown hair, pulled back into a pony tail. He has a full beard and mustache. He stands at 6'2 200 lbs. Lavy is a tall man, but he's very skinny for his height. There is a sort of gracefulness in the way he walks. Lavy wears nicely made traveling clothes, that have a few fancy additions. He wears a nicely adorned rapier at his side.

Personality:

 

Lavy has an air of cockiness about him. He is a very good shipwright, no the best shipwright there is. Especially in this region. On land he blends into the background. But on a ship he is THE MAN. And everyone should know his name. At least, that's the exterior he wears.
Lavy is calm cool and collected. At least on the outside. Under the cool exterior Lavy is still trying to find a place in the world. He doesn't really know what he wants to do or where to go. Really all he thinks about is where his next gold is coming from. He's very jealous when someone's work outshines his own. He is still growing into his manhood. He has matured some since leaving his father, but he has a lot to learn.

Flaws	I’m horribly jealous of anyone who can outshine my handiwork. Everywhere I go, I’m surrounded by rivals.

Lavy is the son of a famous shipwright from another part of the country. He studied under his father for years, learning to be the best there is at his craft. His father Leo Sacar is very famous and very well known for his craft. As Lavy came into his own as a shipwright, it quickly became apparent that everyone in the area would just view his work as his father's. Lavy's ego would not allow him to live in the shadow of another. A few years ago now, Lavy set out on his own. He would find a place to make his own name, and prove his greatness.

Lavy quickly found out a few things.
1) Life is hard.
2) His work IS as good as any, and better than most.
3) He didn't quite learn the business savvy part of the business from his father.

Not really having the business sense his father did made it difficult for Lavy to set up shop in basically any port he tried. He was however, very successful in finding work on the trips his he bounced from town to town. This really became his own sort of business model. Travel from place to place, finding small jobs here in there in towns. And, to also get jobs on the ships he would be traveling on.

Lavy took up a job with a traveling group of Domingue Gang.mercenaries He traveled with them for a little longer then 5 years. There was a slightly older human female named Reya that worked with the Domingue gang. She started training Lavy in the ways of the rapier. Over the years the two started falling in love with each other.

On the day of Lavy's five year anniversary with the crew, the Jody Dominguecaptain called the crew to gather for an announcement. Lavy was late to the gathering, he was trying to finish whatever repair task he was working on. Lavy rushed to the helm, expecting a gathering to announce his five year anniversary with the crew. Instead it was an announcement that Jody and Reya where to be wed.

Lavy's heart was crushed. He excused himself from the mercenary group at the next port. His heart was crushed, but he never looked back.

OOC Peak I created a great work for someone, and then found them unworthy to receive it. I’m still looking for someone worthy. I'm using this piece of story to fulfill this bond. In Lavy's head here, several years down the road, he believes that he left the Domingue Gang because they did not appreciate his masterful work on the ship. Although from the outside looking in we know it was over a broken heart. This dynamic gives this bond double meaning. Not only is he looking for a crew that will appreciate his skill. He is also looking for a lover that will appreciate what a Hey, he thinks he's awesome!great man he is.

Then Lavy found this posted at his latest port drop off:

Job Posting: Quite oddly, the job posting had circulated around all the islands. Not even a single tradesmen has friends in every corner, yet found there was an ad looking for souls brave or foolish enough to consider entering the employ of the College of Phthalo. Furthermore, they would be even crazier to enter a contract that required them to enter ‘those’ dreadful places, residences of the God of Death to be sure. Archeological, or so named it was. A mission to discover, unveil, and recover artifacts, culture, and treasures of a long lost race, the Sea Dwarves of the Deeps. Seemingly swallowed by the seas, they were. Most considered it a foolhardy effort, especially considering no one had discovered the secret of even entering one of their massive doorfronts! Yet some poor fools might make the trip to the Island Dogbone to try and claim in the reward. Some respond to the word “adventure” the way a dog responds to “dinner.” Hapless without burdens of wanderlust, a sorrowful state if you ask me. They have a word for that terrible feeling. I think they call it destiny.

Lavy already knows what his destiny holds. His destiny is to spread his name throughout the land as the greatest shipwright that there has ever been. Reading this job posting, he immediately knew that this was a terrific opportunity to make his name known. Imagine being known as the man that kept the ship moving through the most dangerous and difficult areas in the land.

Before he had even finished the entire posting, Lavy was sold. He WANTS this job.

One more question. How do you feel about Aarakocra and flying speed in this campaign?

Elemental Evil is totally fair game. The PHB has rules on mixing fly/walk speed are fine.

Know that Aarakocra are going to feel very limited in their roleplay opportunities. The rare races account for like 1% of the population, so you'd be quite an oddity in this area.

I can't find in any of the books rules for swimming in armor. How is that going to work?Medium armor vs heavy armor, and also could the penalty be offset by say taking medium armor master?

This sounds interesting. The introduction said that there are some Race restrictions. What races are allowed and what are the restrictions?

History: Pinafore narrowly escaped seminary before he was kicked out (though he was subsequently defrocked), and by means fair and foul made way to one of the great ports: hoping to lose himself in the anonymity of the hustle and bustle of the docks. This was not to be - before long, certain inquisitors and constables were spotted around and about: there was no choice to flee, the further the better. With few funds and fewer friends, the young man had to earn his passage - over the seas, and far away. Signing on as an assistant chef was easy enough, a few cramped gestures and indistinct muttering - suddenly the hard tack is warm and sweet, bully beef redolent of garlic and spices, and grog reflavoured with a light citrus tang.

His lineswork was oddly efficient, too. As the first mate remarked, "It's like you've got three hands lad!"

I've been working on some rules, as I have noticed the same thing. I'll edit the OP soon to reflect my rules for swimming with armor and drowning.

Appearance: Tall for an elf at 5'11 his shoulder length red hair is almost always tied back in a ponytail, his emerald green eyes are bright and fierce. He wears a black and red uniform specific to his temple (typical Kung Fu garb) with long sleeves. Should anyone see him with his shirt off they'll see a multitude of scars all over his arms, torso and back as well as a brand on his left shoulder of a dragon the symbol of his temple.


Personality: He tends to be quiet and stoic most of the time, but his hard working nature and reliability make him likable. He never backs down from a challenge and is quick to defend his friends and shipmates from danger. He rarely speaks but when he does it's often fondly of his training or of his first ship the Dancing Dragon.

History:Born and raised on a remote jungle island in a warrior monk temple Lucian was trained from the time that he could walk. As a child he was loud and playful, often joking around unless training. He was like this for many years until one training mission when he was 20 they were sent out into the jungle for survival training during which time he was attacked by panther. The panther pounced on him and raked it's savage claws against his back chest and arms. During this attack it took everything that he learned to survive and kill the panther before colasping and bleeding profusely. He was found hours later and his wounds were treated though he was barely holding on to life. Comatose for days he struggling to hold on to life something changed, when he finally recovered his playful and joking manner was gone and he rarely spoke or played around choosing to focus on training stoically. His body was covered in scars that were similar to tiger stripes. The body of the panther was also recovered the meat was turned into a feast and the hide was tanned and used to make a pair of gauntlets and a backpack and given to Lucian when his training was completed. At the age of 80 he mastered all that the island could teach him and with the permission of the temple master he began preparing to leave and learn more of the world. He swam the mile long channel between the temple island and another where a port town traded with ships for supplies, this is where he met Rhogar a silver dragonborn and captain of the trading ship The Dancing Dragon. Rhogar agreed to let him work for his passage, and seeing his willingness to work and defend the ship during a pirate attack asked him to stay on with his crew. Not having any real plans of where he was going he decided to stay on and for the next 20 years before moving on traveling fullfilling bounties in small towns all over and hearing about a group of islands full of adventure thinking this would be a great experience and a chance of perfecting his martial arts he decided to go and check it out.

I didn't re-read the op yet (shame on me) but the thing a friend of mine did was that every armor which imposes stealth disadvantage also imposes disadvantage on athletics when swimming. Actually makes sense with the padded armor (where stealth disadvantage does not IMHO) because all that padding is going to be really heavy when soaked with water.
