I have yet to form my opinion of 5th yet but I can tell you from playing experience, 4th ed was horrible!
I've only played 3.5 (and Pathfinder), but I was really sad for the monk. Great flavor, poor mechanics.

I never really played a monk in 3.5 or pathfinder, but I liked how the style feats enhanced them a bit, but never playing one, I guess I never really got to see them in action. I did love what Pathfinder did with the a lot of the other classes. As much as I loved 3.5, Pathfinder enhanced the classes to a point where you really did get something new every level. In 3.5 there were a few levels, unless you were a spellcaster, where you really didn't get anything new except for higher saves, some skill points, and maybe a higher BAB.

Stylistically, I've always loved them, but you had to get multiple 18s for them to be effective. Always great to roll play though.

I usually gravitated towards, rogues or fighters, but it really depended the character concept for me. Though I found them interesting, I just never really had a desire to build a monk.

Basic InfoCharacter Name: Thomas Almarin
Race: Human
Class: Monk
Weight:175
Height: 6'2"
Age: 26
Gender: Male
Alignment: Chaotic Good
Background: Entertainer

AppearanceThomas has medium length brown hair, blue eyes, and slightly tan skin. He wears a martial arts gi almost all the time. He carries a moon shaped pendant around his neck and has a set of bells hooked on his belt. He has thin eyebrows but a prominent nose, and his mouth is almost always wearing a slight smile.

PersonalityThomas believes in honesty, even at the cost of hurting someone's feelings, and he cannot keep his own feelings hidden. He strives for perfection at any task he performs, but especially when it comes to his entertainment routine. He guards his set of bells almost reverently, going out of his way to keep them clean and unharmed. He is quick to anger but feels it as coldness rather than heat, and is fine biding his time to get comeuppance. He is good at heart, though reckless at times. He cannot stand feeling helpless or beneath someone else.

Background
Thomas grew up in a small village, the name of which he has long forgotten. He remembers but one thing about this time; trees. Giant trees extending high into the sky, seemingly forever, a dark roof of green. If you asked him today he would tell you they were normal trees grown tall by the imagination of a single child with too much time on his hands. As he grew older and changed, so did his surroundings. Trees turned into stone and plains. He did not know if his family moved willingly or if they were forced from the tree home he once knew, but they found themselves in a large city.

Suddenly Tom had much less time on his hands, having to tend to chores and work odd jobs to help his father and mother afford their small home. He fell in with the entertainer crowd, working only as a crier or money-taker, but secretly wishing he could be the one on the stage. This secret got out to the other children and they did not offer any encouragement, only the opposite. After a particularly mean bully had pushed Tom into the mud, he was approached by one of the entertainers in town who had watched the encounter. It was a monk who worshiped Selune and performed a graceful martial arts inspired dance. She offered to teach Tom self-defense and the basics of her dance. Tom readily agreed and bade farewell to his parents, setting off with the monk with their permission.

Thomas traveled with the monk, who was named Amelai, for many years. He picked up the basics of martial arts and dance and found himself drawn to musical bells as well. During one night of camping on the road the caravan was attacked by goblins. Everyone was slain but Thomas, who survived by being away from camp practicing his routine. He came upon the slaughter after the fact, and found Amelai near death. She gave him her moon shaped necklace, a symbol of Selune, and a set of musical bells she had commissioned for his 18th birthday. She died. He wandered. He eventually took to worshiping Selune as a way of remembering Amelai.

Many years have passed and he currently travels from town to town looking for purpose, performing not for money but as a memorial to Amelai.

Relationship with Gundren
"Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Thomas Almarin, master of the martial arts and the dance of bells!" the ring master boomed, pointing at Tom as he stood rigid in the middle of the large tent, a raucous Neverwinter crowd filling the stands. Tom bowed low and felt himself empty, preparing for his dance.

He suddenly erupted forward, swinging his fists and kicking his feet fluidly. Light flashed at his hands as his silver bells seemed to magically appear in them. He danced around the open space, in mock combat with an imaginary foe, flipping and feignting, the notes played by the bells setting the tone, frantic when it seemed he was losing, confident and deep when he triumphed. Once the dance concluded the bells returned to his belt as suddenly as they had left, and Tom bowed once more, this time to the applaud of the crowd.

Later Tom stood by his tent tending to his outfit when he was approached by a muscular, although short, man.

"Ye carry yourself well, that was no act." remarked the dwarf, "The names Gundren." he extended his hand and Tom shook it, one eyebrow raised, wary.
"Thanks for the compliment." spoke Tom, "What are you trying to buy with it?"
Gundren laughed at the abrupt words. "To the point eh?" he sighed, "Very well. I'm lookin for folk to escort my property out O' town. Strong, steady folk." he added. "Like ye. I saw how ye move. Ye can handle yourself. Pays well, what do ye say? Beats bending over fer a crowd everyday."

Tom looked around himself at the town, thinking.
"Come by some other time, I'll have an answer then." he said. Gundren nodded and smiled, "Be seeing ye soon then." he spoke, then walked away, laughing again.

Tom mulled the request over in his head. He could use a change. He'd spent too much time being content with being nothing. He muttered under his breath, grabbed his belongings, and ran after Gundren. Enough waiting, he decided.

BasicName: Lira Windrivver
Race: Human
Gender: Female
Class: Rogue
Height: 5'3"
Weight: ~115
Age: 22
Alignment: Chaotic Neutral
Background: Charlatan

AppearanceLira is a short, slight, pale girl with raven dark hair and eyes like a cold winter morning. Her nose is long and slightly pointed at the tip. Her dark hair is cut to a chin-length bob save for a single braid descending to about halfway down her neck on her left. She wears no makeup and has little in the blemishes or visible scars.

PersonalityLira follows her own set of morals. She defends the poor and the helpless, even when they aren't necessarily in the right. She doesn't worry about stopping herself from taking from the rich and giving to the poor, after all, she wouldn't have to resort to such drastic measures if those pigs would stop hoarding everything for themselves, anyway. Lira would risk her life to save a child from the path of a cart... but might 'accidentally' bump a noble into that same path. She has had more than one run-in with the guard captain and so strives to avoid all guards, lest they recognize her and set out to make her an example.

BackgroundLira was born poor. She grew up poor. She will probably die poor. And she's okay with that. What she's not okay with: watching those fat nobles in their big fancy houses stuff themselves with a month's worth of food, then throw out the rest! Do they not see how hungry her people are?!

It wasn't take long between the time Lira noticed this and the start of her rampant thievery. She was good at it too: small but strong, she could be in and out with their most precious jewels long before they finished their evening gluttony.

She did have rules. What good thief didn't? She didn't steal from the poor or those who helped the less fortunate, only the greedy pigs who already had too much, and most of the proceeds went to feed and house her adopted family.

The rest of the coin, just a small portion, went to her dream of leaving this awful, corrupted town, of getting out. She wanted to explore the world.

Relationship with GundrenLira has known Gundren for a long while. He occasionally visited the poorer districts, which was rare for someone who didn't slum there. Lira talked to him frequently on these visits. When word came that he was looking for help, Lira was delighted! A way to pay him back and make some easy gold.

Name: Meldolliel Torabrinas
Race: Wood Elf
Background: Criminal
Class Ranger
Favourite Enemy: Goblinkind and Humans
Gender: Female
Alignment: NG

Living in a forest between two human settlements, Meldolliel turned to the life of a highway robber which did her well for decades until adventurers arrested her. In prison, she had one book she read over and over: it was he story of the Gundren Rockseeker's rise and fall, the last chapter missing. When she finally was released for her crimes, she decided to find the hero she read about. When she did, he convinced her to turn over a new leaf and abandon crime. She's still working on that.

Hi, I've been playing dnd for a few months now. Started with 5e. This is my first ranger. I never played a ranger before. Never got the appeal so figured a beginnings mod would be great to try it out. Never played Lost Mines before.

What I'm going for with Meldolliel is a person seriously trying to not just reform despite overwhelming greed but trying to get to grips of being out of prison and rebuilding her life. She has to unlearn all the learned behavior she picked up in jail. I haven't thought of where she is going personality or level-wise because I want the things around her to shape her as she finds her new way of life.

Deadline is in eight and a half hours. I have a short list of a few more players than I will accept. I will be re-reading all applications at the deadline time in case there are more or existing ones are improved. Still time to give your character that extra little bit that could get you in Or to write up a whole application if you haven't yet!

I've ran this as a DM before but never played and would love to, but I would understand if you didn't want someone with knowledge of the game beforehand. Would you not want me as a player?

Prior knowledge does take away from it a bit I find.

Anyhoo, applications are now closed. I will review all applications and post a list of accepted players soon Some great applications here, and I'm gonna hate saying no to some. If you don't get in, I will keep everyone who applied already first in line in case someone drops out and we need replacements
