How will levelling up ship skills work in the game?

WIP Application Name: 'Professor' Gilliam Pile Class: Rogue Race: Mixed-Blood Age: 35 Ship Role: Whatever needs doing. Background: Charlatan Personality Trait: Flattery is his preferred trick for getting what he wants. Ideal: Aspiration. Gilliam is determined to make something of himself. Bond: He once fleeced the wrong person and must work to ensure that this individual never crosses paths with him again. Flaw: Too greedy for his own good, he can't resist taking a risk if there's money involved. Physical Description: At first glance, Gilliam looks very much like one might expect from a man who names himself a scholar: average height, with the look of a man has missed more than a few meals while lost in his work. His hair is unmarked by grey, but his face is somewhat drawn, giving away that he is no longer as young as he once was, the lines around his mouth eyes speak of a life of smiling and laughter. His clothes tend to look expensive and well-made, if having the slightly ruffled appearance of having been slept in. The small pair of wire-frame spectacles perched on his nose completes the look of a bookish scholar. Personality: With an easy smile and a laughing glint in his eyes, Gilliam seems a very easy-going sort and by-and-large this is accurate. Little ever seems to ruffle his feathers, or shake him up, and nothing ever seems to make him frown. Despite being - at heart - a materialistic, selfish, greedy and cynical person, there's an odd kind of serenity to how he carries himself, as though he's acknowledged his own shortcomings and embraced them. Backstory: Gilliam was born in the Blue Sky Archipelago to working class parents. His father died when he was very young, leaving young Gilliam to be raised alone by his mother; a kind, industrious woman who was determined to ensure a bright future for her son, especially when the boy discovered that he possessed a voracious appetite for books and learning. As a boy, Gilliam would read every book he could find, most of his meager allowance going to the occasional book merchant that moved through the trading posts of his island home. Though the family had little money, Gilliam's mother worked hard to pay for her son's schooling, sending the boy to a prestigious academy for his education. Determined not to let his beloved mother's sacrifices go to waste, Gilliam worked hard and excelled at his studies. But the search for knowledge never ends, and after graduating, he decided to travel the world, both to put his knowledge to practice and to see what else he might learn. At least, that's what Gilliam claims. In truth, no one truly knows where the man who calls himself Gilliam was born. A charlatan and a wandering vagabond, he'll hold on to an identity only long enough for it to wear out its welcome before discarding it and moving on to greener prospects. The adventurous professor is merely the latest in a long line, but even while sticking to a single story, the details often change. For every five taverns he passes through, one might hear seven different version of the stories, most of them from Gilliam himself. Whether the man is a pathological liar or simply enjoys seeing who is clever enough to pick up on it is difficult to say. Certainly, the man himself hardly seems bothered by it, and even if someone happens to call him out on some contradiction he will often simply laugh and spin a new tale altogether. One of the few common thread that tends to appear in most of Gilliam's stories is that he is a scholar, though which particular institution he hails from can change wildly, and more than once he has even claimed to have taught himself everything he knows. Perhaps there is even a shred of truth to the man's claims to higher education. Certainly he seems to know a great deal about a wide range of subjects, many of which he would not simply be able to pick up on the streets. It's simply too bad that he's typically more interested in how his knowledge might get him some easy money rather than doing anything more productive with it.

Bade: In between the main chapters of the game I will introduce intermediate chapters that will span longer periods of time than a standard game setting. Your character will be free to pursue long term goals that would otherwise be hard to achieve in the span of just one day or during a dungeon crawl.

This will give your character a chance to apprentice with someone who knows more about in a certain subject. You could also choose to increase your ship skills by experimentation. The down time periods will not be exclusively for improving ship skills, you could also choose to learn a new language or get a new skill proficiency based on what you choose to do.

Couple of questions as i've been having a bit of trouble getting my characters background done. What are the names of some Zivilyn cities/towns/villages, there capital? Will Zivilyn characters start with the dark goggles (Assuming its to negate there light sensitivity) or how much would they cost? What is life like for the Zivilyn people? the difference between a regular citizen, a soldier, and a noble? I am ok with this info being secreted or PMed to me if you want to keep there mystery alive....in fact i would prefer it
