I think I'll check it out, maybe roll up a character, test the waters.

Hey there, I'm interested in starting a campaign to help take off the edge of stay-at-home monotony. Any groups in need of more players?

The whole Games Seeking Players thread is Campaigns looking for players. The West Marches is a Shared/Open World with multiple-GMs. We are always accepting new players. If you are interested, check out the READ First New Player thread.

Giving this a quick bump. The West Marches game has been continuously running since 2017. We have around 10 GMs and 40 or so players.

We encourage those new PbP and or RPGCrossing players to apply. As a shared/open game, everyone is accepted and we are continuously starting new adventures.

As well, this is a good place to try your hand at GMing. There is a ready pool of characters/players and experienced GMs to help out. As well, GMs commit on a per adventure basis (approximately 3 months IRL). So, there is no long-term commitment to GMing.

If you are interested, start here

Okay, I'm having a heck of a time figuring out the dice.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What specifically are you having trouble with? Rolling a character or just rolling the dice in general?

Idrahil,

The link below is the basic information about the Dice Roller. Additionally, I find out it is frequently useful to try out format codes using Preview. You can try a Dice format and then preview to see if it is valid. You can do the same thing with the various BBS codes. Also, you can quote someone else’s post and see the codes they used to get their result.

Thanks, your Quote and Preview tricks did it.

I kept hearing about Westmarches concept, but never had a chance to sign up to one. I'll throw win a character shortly!

Welcome to West Marches Bjorgulf.

Our version of the West Marches has varied a bit from the original article. First, the original article had ‘town safe and boring, wilderness dangerous’. We have run a number of in-town adventures. Second, the idea was that all of the adventures were ‘location-based’, the PCs go to a specific location and Dungeon Dive. We have been a bit more flexible with adventure types - I have even participated in a Murder Mystery that was entirely social (no combat). Third, the original West Marches was designed to be mostly stand-alone (one-shot adventures). However, a number of the GMs are now running larger campaigns, where different groups of characters go on different adventures as part of the campaign arc.

Oh stop it, my dice tower can only get so upright!

That 8 in CON / INT is really messing up my character ideas.. 8 INT means 10 WIS so no multiclass, or 8 CON means a really frail caster... decisions decisions!

How does one go about applying for a chance to learn the ropes and join the team of DMs?

Calling us a team perhaps stretches the definition. Anyone can volunteer to GM a game. From past experience, we prefer that people play at least one adventure in the West Marches before GMing. This is mostly to reduce the learning curve and to reduce the probability that they will bail part way through the adventure.

We have had people who GM and then go off to run a private game, others who decide after an outing that GMing is not for them. Then, we have a core of people who regularly GM a game.

More to the point, we try and provide some support for new GMs. I have put together a brief guide on GMing in the West Marches. GMs are available to review outlines and answer question. We try to mix in a more experienced player/GM into adventure with a new GM.

Take at Read Me First If it sounds good, I would suggest rolling up a character and joining an adventure. If you are really anxious to GM, ask in the Ask a DM thread and one of the GMs can consider it.

This sounds interesting. I'll begin working on a character.
