The Short answer, no we don’t allow the Planeshift material. However, we do allow re-skinning races (and weapons). You can pick an official WotC race, use its mechanics, but call it a different race. For example, we have a playing playing a Thri-Kreen based on a Simic Hybrid.

The longer answer. Which material(s) we use has evolved over time. Initially, we allowed UA Classes and Races. However, we had to deal with changes when UA became official (and UA material became abandoned). The general consensus is that there are more than enough official Races and Sub-Classes for people.

The standard is that anyone should be able to run your character without referencing any outside material other than spell descriptions.

does this mean even if not accepted some one else can play your ch that you made? or is this for if you go silent and they have to finish with out you?

Public means that the GMs and other players can view (but not change) the character. This is necessary for review of the character both on creation and at the start of adventures (different GMs).

This looks like a lot of fun! I'm starting on a character, and I have a question about stats which may have an obvious answer, but I'll ask anyway at the risk of straining your patience:

I rolled stats in Lady Luck's House and got an 18 as my last number. I want to use the rolled stats in reverse order and I'm thinking of making a half-orc character, but the half-orc racial bonus would give me a strength of 20. Is having a stat that high okay, or is there a cap on what stats should be for this game?

This is better off asked in the OOC General Thread in the West Marches. However, yes reverse the stat and your Half-Orc will have a 20 Strength. Rolling a 18 is not unheard of. I have a Warlock running around with a 20 Charisma (although he does have a 9 Int).

It is common to have questions about the world and the game before you get a completed character. Also, feel free to RP in the On Your Shiled and register in the OOC Party Planning thread even before the character is approved. The West Marches is an open game (subject to GM availability) and so approval is merely making sure that your character is complete and consistent with WotC sources.

A quick plug/bump for The West Marches. We have 11 active games. Game are designed to be one adventuring day and run about 3 months in IRL. It is a great opportunity to learn a bit more about PbP.

Yes custom backgrounds are fine (common actually). BTW, we are in the early stages of getting a 1st level adventure started.
