[SR6E] Shadowrun: Barcelona 2080

GAME NAMEShadowrun: Barcelona 2080

GAME SYSTEMShadowrun Sixth Edition

GAME THEMEMystery, Survival

GAME TONENew City, new contacts, new friends, new enemies, and the clock is ticking

GAME PLOTMr. Johnson - "Here’s what I know, or at least what I strongly believe: In the near future, someone important is going to be assassinated in Barcelona. Several signs point in that direction: Some heavy hitters have moved into the sprawl, while some light hitters have left town to clear out some space. Law enforcement has picked up some buzz about this, too, but they only know something is in the works, not what. They don’t know it’s an assassination. I need t know more, and I’ll pay you to find out what’s going on before it happens. Then we can figure out if we want to stop it.

I’ll pay your way to Barcelona, then each of you will be on a five-thousand-nuyen-a-week retainer. That should cover food and lodging, but you can contact me if there are any extraordinary expenses you need help with. "

CHARACTER CREATIONWorking through the character creation process is helpful with defining specific details for your character and will give me a good idea of the type of character you want to play, but the most important thing I am looking for in a character submission will be the background. It does not need to be a novel, but it would be nice to see your writing style and what motivates your character.

As far as game mechanics go for character creation, we will be using standard priority generation, although I am happy to accept Sum-10 *1 provided only one Priority A choice is taken. (NOTE: There are some additional rewards you can use at character creation noted in the House Rules.)

To help with character creation, Arialles has created an Excel Character Generator for SR6 which can be downloaded from here (Section 7.1 6e Runner creation tool).

I would like to keep the post as clean as possible, maintaining the PG13 rating for this platform. Let's keep descriptive violence minimal and without too much gore. I would also like the story focused on the campaign (preferably everyone stays professional and focus on the job)with little to no romance.

We’ll use SR swear words, eg drek and frag(ger) rather than their Anglo Saxon equivalents.

I am looking for one player to join the current team.

I've got a Human Operative Sniper for you.

The AlleywayDerrick waited for the guard to clear the corner of the building. Tightening his finger on the trigger he loosens a single round. The sub-sonic bullet whistles slightly through the air, driving through skull and flesh to destroy the top of the brainstem. The sentry couldn’t even let out a gasp of surprise before crumpling down into the slowly expanding pool of his own blood.

One thousand feet away from what’s left of the sentry, Derrick lifts his cheek from the butt of his rifle. "Ghost to Viper, Eyes blinded. 12 minutes to shift change. Go."

A subtle whirring sound alerted him to the spy drone whipping past his head to provide overwatch to the team going in. "Ghost confirms Wasp on site." He waved down to the team disappearing into the building before scooting back from the snipers nest and beginning to make his way around the high-ground over the alley where his truck was parked. "Ghost on station at Drop 2. 10 minutes to extract."

The next few minutes are silent, the team inside would only contact him if they needed help. The sniper held his breath for almost a minute as a truck stopped across the alleyway leading to this back entrance to the facility, but it moved on quickly. He checked the time display inside his glasses. Everything was going according to plan. A security drone hovered overhead, its cams and turrets swiveling about to survey the alley. That was the tricky part. Derrick hadn’t worked with their rigger before and wasn’t entirely sure that the programs he’s put in place would work. If they did, the drone would see a recording of its previous pass and transmit that as the real-time image. No alarms were raised and the drone continued its flight without pause. “Good job Wasp.” He whispered.

Derrick breathes a sigh of relief as his teammates emerge from the facility three minutes ahead of the deadline. "Go for evac at Drop 2." He pushes the coil of rope over the edge and swings his rifle onto his back. Just as he grabs the rope to rappel down to the truck, the sound of a van door draws his attention back to the far end of the alley. Three men in security uniforms pour out of an unmarked van and take up positions at the alleyway. Then a fourth swings an armature mounted rotary cannon through the doorway and points it towards the retreating intrusion team.

“Cover!” He shouts. Despite the ease with which he could pick them off from this height he didn’t bother to swing his rifle in line. Even his expert reflexes would be too slow to draw a bead and eliminate the driver before he perforated the exposed Shadowrunners below. One hand swung out bearing his shotgun. Firing before he even was conscious of the move. At this range the load would pepper the gunner, doing no damage, but maybe getting him to pause and look up. Most people wouldn't seek to draw the attention of a crew served anti-vehicular cannon. But most people wouldn’t already be cocked back to throw both a frag grenade and a smoke popper at the gunner.

Before the grenades had even bounced down the alley he was one hand on the rope and over the side of the roof. He aimed for the dumpster behind his truck. His half-grip would slow him some, and day-old Chinese food would provide a softer landing than the pavement. He only had a few moments to contemplate the number of chopsticks he might get stuck with and a brief flashback to an incident involving an ex-girlfriend, a fondue fork, and a very ugly public breakup. Then he landed, twisting an ankle and jarring his knee. Then the frag went off. The brick walls channeled the shockwave down the alley, knocking the lid of the dumpster closed.

A second shockwave, much bigger, sent the dumpster rolling for several feet before it tipped over spilling refuse and sniper into the pavement. Derrick looked back at the now burning wreckage of the van the guards had arrived in. A large hand grabbed Derrick by the shoulder and hauling him effortlessly into the air. The Troll held Derrick at arm's length as if the man weighed nothing. "You ok, Der?"

Wincing in pain as he was lowered back down to his injured leg he replied, "I'll be fine Tank. Get the others into the truck. We're gone."

Name and Principle Alias: Morgen Chantel “Cheshire”

Ethnicity and Metatype: Caucasian Human

Born:2056 Sex:Male Height:5’6” Weight:120 lbs. Nationality:UCAS

Archetype:Technomancer

Description:Cheshire doesn’t really stand out much from the crowd. Average height, average weight, average build, basic clothes, and keep to herself demeanor doesn’t really scream shadowrunner, at least of the trids are to be believed. Looking poor and riding the public transportation system helps to explain the lack of basic Cyberware she seemed to lack given how she never really had the money for the ‘ware or surgery. She is pretty and likable but tends to keep to herself. This of course leads some men to think she was easy pickings all without noticing the crazed and mischievous twinkle in her eye as they approached.

BioMorgan Chantel was brought up as the only child in the Barrens of Seattle. Her mother died during childbirth while her father died an innocent bystander in a drive by shooting. This left her being raised by her uncle, Keith Chantel. Keith wasn’t the best role model, but the man protected Morgan as if she was his own daughter. Keith was the leader of a local street gang, the Boomsticks. The guys of the gang knew to keep their hands off her otherwise Keith would put a bullet through their skulls. This led to her being raised by her adoptive “uncles”. They taught her how to shoot and sneak around from a young age.

At about 12 years old, Morgan began to have lucid dreams where she was floating through the Matrix seeing everything in such clarity. When she woke up, the little girl could swear that it felt so real. Every night, she couldn’t wait until it was time for her to sleep and rejoin that world. After a couple of years, that mystical world wasn’t just when she was sleeping but also during daydreams until eventually she was fully awake. Having grown up with AR and trodes, she knew what she was seeing was the Matrix. Several matrix searches later helped Morgan to realize that she may be a Technomancer.

She decided to intentionally dive for the first time and meditated in her room. Her consciousness floated through the Matrix like a fish to water. Nothing was hidden from her, but she was hidden to the world. Upon exploring, she found a hole just floating in the air. A white rabbit in a comical costume whizzed by her giving a playful wink on the way by. ”I know what you are. Do you?”Before she could respond, it was gone into the hole. Without a moment’s hesitation, she dived into the hole falling deeper and deeper for what seemed forever.

Time is relative in the matrix. Some things that seem like second could be hours and vice versa. Out from the hole came the white rabbit walking alongside a floating purple and pink Cheshire cat. The rabbit turned to the cat. “You’re ready, Morgan.”Cheshire stretched it’s legs with what sounded like several bones popping. It rubbed its cheek on the Rabbit before disappearing. Morgan opened her eyes to see the whole gang circled around her bed with Keith looking particularly relieved to she she was awake. ”Morgan! Oh thank goodness you’re finally awake. You’ve been laying there unconscious for three days. Are you okay?” Morgan sat up and smiled at Keith with a smile and eyes almost too wide for her face. ”I’ve never felt better…”

From then on, she was a force to be reckoned with. Her sprites caused so much mischief against anyone that went up against her uncle and the Boomsticks. The other guys in the gang all admired and feared her. Knowing that one day somebody might betray her, Keith sent her into the Shadows to keep her secret safe and possibly run into more of her kind. She was 22 when she went into the shadows as Cheshire and garnered a decent reputation. There were always rumors of what she was but no evidence to prove it.

Here is my application.

I have changed the concept to being Cover-Ops Specialist, which I think could really help with the investigation and information gathering portion of the game. The aim is to lean more into assassination/infiltration, rather than the face/charmer/manipulator. Hope that's not an issue?

Good luck to the other applicants, too!

PERSONAL INFO
NAME: James Smith ALIAS: Incognito
ETHNICITY: Caucasian METATYPE: Elf
BORN: 2057 GENDER: Male
HEIGHT: 5'10" WEIGHT: 180 lbs
BUILD: Athletic NATIONALITY: American
METATYPE: D / ATTRIBUTES: A / MAGIC: E / SKILLS: B / RESOURCES: C
DESCRIPTION: Incognito is a lean, physically toned, and clearly fit Elf. He isn't too big or too small, he isn't overly attractive or terribly ugly, and he tends to blend into a crowd quite easily. His dark hair is kept short, he has dark eyes, and possesses very typical traits of his race - his face is angular, giving him the pointed chin and defined cheekbones, he has pointed ears and a litheness to movement.
Depending on the task, Incognito can wear many clothing types. Usually he favors a clean, crisp suit of average expense, though does keep more infiltration-specific clothing on hand, namely sneak suits and designer wears. He also knows how to blend in, or change his physical appearance with his clothing - such as broadening his stature with large coats, or hiding his ears with certain hats or beanies, etc.

BACKGROUND FILE
Born to unknown parentage, a small Elf baby was delivered to a local orphanage in the barrens of Seattle. He was raised from that day on by the employees of the shelter, given the name James Smith, and learned many hard lessons quickly. The other children in the orphanage weren't always kind, James was usually called a an elf (vulgar)keeb by one bully in particular, A future unfriendly rival contact that is equal to your character (+5 karma)Levi Jones. Over the years, James also made friends with others, but the orphanage didn't allow for long-term relationships - as there was no way to know when a family would adopt one of them.
James found he was able to blend in, except where it came to Levi, and he was able to move through various social groups with ease. It made for a fairly distant lifestyle, since James found it hard to get close to people, otherwise he drew attention. However, it was that blandness that made him a perfect pickpocket and petty thief, which allowed him to venture out onto the mean streets of Seattle to grab some extra creds for personal spending. It wasn't like the orphanage was giving out pocket money for their kids, after all.
James' biggest confrontation came when Levi, who was older and bigger, had finally had enough of the Elf kid. Whatever the reason was, it was hard to say, but the hatred was obvious and there was no way Levi was going to back down. So, the pair fought, and being the stronger of the two, Levi beat the hell out of James; and once it was over, the latter was left battered and bruised, bleeding from cuts across his face and body. Thankfully, Levi didn't last much longer at the orphanage, as he decided to leave when the caretakers started reprimanding him for his behavior... and for what happened to James.
James would find out weeks later that Levi fell in with a violent gang, and had moved out of the shelter, to live his own life. And over the years the pair would cross paths, with Levi having become even meaner and that hatred for James only having grown. It also didn't help that during James' early teenage years, he fell in with bad crowds - with some of them being local thugs that Levi knew. Still, James proved to be an asset, and was protected somewhat from his rival. So, James was often used the boy for tailing rival gangers, delivering packages or lifting scrip chips from SINners. James made a good living, but the constant threat of danger was there, which helped to hone his natural instincts and improve his skills - especially when he had no choice but to get better, or face the rage of the people he 'worked' for.
It was around his late teens that James started to make a reasonable name for himself. He had a penchant for being able to blend in, to hide in plain sight, and to find his way into places that shouldn't have been accessible. Some attributed it to luck, others to rumor, but the truth was that James was more skilled than he let on. Being socially adaptable was one of his biggest strengths, since he could put on clothing of - seemingly - any type and immediately be accepted by others for what he was wearing. So it went without saying that James used that particular characteristic to his advantage, especially when it came to fooling false work colleagues into paying for group dinners, or running a tab at the local club when he assimilated with wageslaves finished for the day.
In his twenties, James caught the attention of a fixer - An (Expendable) Contact that you can use for free while they are aroundPennywise - when she needed someone who could do things nice and quiet like, and the alias Incognito was born. The job involved infiltrating a gambling ring, where a datasteal device needed to be placed into the computer in the main office; the purpose was to copy files, find evidence desired by the employer, and get it out of the establishment. Through a combination of guile, stealth and a handy change of clothing, Incognito was able to live up to his alias-sake and performed the job admirably - and not only did he gain the fixer as an on-going contact, but he received a small jing bonus for the effectiveness.
It was an excellent start to his shadowrunner career.
More recently, Incognito has been accepting bigger and better jobs. He plans to leave the gang work behind, instead focused on becoming a dedicated runner, where he feels the better pay comes from. Not to mention he has a little more control over his life, and doesn't owe anyone for anything, unless he chooses to...

Bumping this ad up!
I am so not a Shadowrun player, but have been fortunate to play in a few games with Kenjitsu.
They are a wonderfully creative and engaging player; I can only imagine how weird, delightful and interactive their Barcelona is going to be!
Apply for this...you won't regret it!

I'll post interest, might get a character up soon, depending on how quickly I can twig the 6E chargen. I'll probably roll an aspected sorcerer or full magician. Possibly an adept.

I need to give 6E a fair shot, I suppose.

I'm withdrawing, I absolutely cannot stomach 6E it seems.

I feel the same way, Marshmallow. I think when 6E came out, instead of judging it on it merits, I tried to use 5E as a benchmark. After some conversations with Yamaneko - and thinking about Imveros' mantra of 'the best version of Shadowrun is the one you're playing' - I should start over. It's me, 6E, not you!

Aleksandar walked around the corner just in time to see the Interpol van disgorge a squad of heavily armed cops in front of his Milan hotel. His heart raced in his chest as he recognized the Cyber Division patches on their body armor. He knew they were headed for room 1134. His room.

The Tastes-Like-Chicken© Burrito fell from nerveless fingers and hit the sidewalk with a splat, unnoticed by the decker. His mind raced in sixteen directions at once as he tried to figure out how to get to his hotel room before the police. He knew it would be impossible. Weak legs carried him back around the corner – out of sight of the Interpol van – as he thought about the hundreds of thousands of nuyen in equipment that he had just lost.

***

Aleksandar Straga was born in Novi Pazar, Serbia. He was poor and SINless, but so was everyone else around him. His family didn’t have much, but they got along fine. His sole entertainment was playing Matrix games at the public library after school. When the Matrix crashed in 2064, his pastime was denied him for a while, so he spent more time in his father’s automotive shop.

After things returned to normal, Aleks was back on the Matrix, but this time he was more interested in Matrix architecture. That hobby led him to the Vory V Zakone syndicate, Serbia’s largest employer of the SINless. He began as a security spider with the Vory, where he and a Russian competed for the top spot.

Bruno, the Russian, didn’t think an upstart Serbian had a place in the Vory, and wasn’t shy about making his feelings known. While Aleks felt much the same about Bruno, the competitive nature of their relationship pushed both deckers to heights they wouldn’t have achieved by themselves. When Aleks got promoted to run the Eastern European host for the Vory syndicate, he felt like he had finally proved himself to be better than his rival.

The promotion meant moving to Georgia, which was perfect for Straga. Despite who his employer was, his life in Tblisi was like that of a middle manager in a Megacorp. For the most part, he worked 9 to 5, had a nice apartment, and hit the clubs on weekends. All of this by 22. If it had been up to him, he’d still be there.

However, four years after he got to Georgia, there was a major “reorganization” of the Vory. Aleksandar’s boss was out, and that meant bad news for Aleks. Because of how close Straga was to his old boss, the most likely outcome was a visit from a Russian hit squad. It was possible that his skills would make him valuable enough to keep under the new management, but he decided not to stick around to find out.

Aleks made a cursory attempt to fake his own death before taking his cyberware and a platinum credstick full of nuyen to Rome. He was no spy, but he kept his head down and lived well below what he was used to in Georgia. He figured he’d make it or he wouldn’t. The axe never fell, so after six months, he started looking for work.

That was when he met Anne Munition, a Street Sam from Seattle. Anne was working the European circuit while “things cooled off on the other side of the pond,” she said. They worked together on a few jobs and, by the time she went back to the UCAS, Aleks was an established shadowrunner himself.

***

A year ago, Aleksandar’s old friend Bruno caught up with him. Like Aleks, Bruno was outed by the Vory shake up. He too is a shadowrunner now, and it was only by coincidence that he found the Serbian. Sending Interpol after his rival was Bruno’s way of renewing their acquaintance. Now Aleks is working on replacing his gear, restoring the damage to his reputation, and returning the favor to Bruno.

Contacts
  • Oleg Taktarov (4L/4C) Vory lieutenant (friend/mentor): Oleg is past his prime now, but he comes from a time when all you needed was toughness and loyalty. He prospered in the Vory because he had bucketloads of both. By the time Aleks met him, he had stopped being the muscle, instead riding herd on this generation of thugs. Everyone, including Aleks, deferred to him and, over time, Oleg took the young Matrix specialist under his wing. Oleg survived the change in management, but unofficially stays in touch with Aleksandar.
  • Anne Munition (4L/2C) (friend): One of the most amoral people Aleks has met outside the Vory, Anne hails from that Mecca of shadowrunning, Seattle. She would take any kind of work and never look back. That is why she ended up in Europe for awhile and, frankly, Aleks was glad to see her head west again. She assumed everyone was like her and was on the verge of taking Aleks down a dark path. Now that they are several thousand miles apart, the Serbian has no problem staying in touch with the person who got him into the shadows. They trade information and Anne still has some other contacts in Europe that Aleks has helped out in the past.
  • Dario Cabrisi - Italian Carabinieri officer (2L/3C) (trade favors): While Aleks was laying low in Rome, he started building a new network of friends. Coopting police was a favorite Vory practice, and the decker started with that. Dario isn’t a crooked cop, but he doesn’t mind ‘drawing outside the lines’ either. Aleks has done a fair bit of Matrix work for Dario and, in exchange, the Carabinieri officer has shared his contacts with the Italian Mafia.
  • “Herr Schmidt” - Black Market electronics dealer (2L/3C) (regular customer): Aleksandar doesn’t know Schmidt’s real name. His guess is the guy doesn’t work with shadowrunners much, and he used that name with Anne as a joke. The reason for these inferences is because Herr Schmidt is what German shadowrunners call Mr. Johnson. No (professional) Johnson would stoop to doing what Schmidt does, and nobody (well, almost nobody) who worked in the shadows on a regular basis would have a moniker like that. At least that’s what Aleksandar tells himself. Schmidt has been the go-to guy for everything electronic from fake SINs to cyberdecks. As far as Aleks can tell, he is located in the Black Forest Troll Kingdom, but his infrastructure is top notch and runs throughout Europe.

"Sierra 2 in position. Visual on Target Beta"
The sniper was lying on the roof of an office building, which was bathed in a pale light by the logo of the Shiawase-Shipping-Int-Corporation and blinked. An unusual - and after implantation of the cyber eyes - also useless habit. And as expected, the picture didn't change.
"Command ... do you see that too? Beta is ..."
He considered how he should describe his observation, but Commands respond was faster.
"Sierra 2, we see everything you see; target beta is to disable. Please confirm kill."
He looked through the scope again. The strange colors he had recently seen had disappeared, but the certainty of his observation remained.
"Command, target Beta is pregnant, shooting not possible."
"Sierra 2, repeat."
"Target Beta is pregnant ... I… I can't shoot."
"I see your feed, Neal."
The lieutenant's voice remains professional and calm. "The target is not pregnant. Beta is an armed terrorist who will destroy several million Nuyen corp property in a few seconds. You have to fire now."
"Sir .. I can't."

The sniper released his finger from the trigger and let out a deep breath. His hand was shaking, something that had never happened before. He heard the officer's voice through his helmet headphones. "Sierra 1, change position as marked, confirm destination and take out Beta. Domino 1 and 2 ready for access in 3, 2, 1."
The sniper wondered what to do next.

Angel didn't feel good about the whole thing. She had even vomited this morning, an unmistakable sign that she should keep her hands off the run. But the other two had convinced her to come with them and at least to stand up.
Suddenly a shot tore through the silence of the night. The wall of the house half a meter next to Angel's head exploded in a cloud of concrete fragments. Instinctively she took cover.
"Team, enemy contact. Get out of here!"
She ran as fast as she could towards the meeting point. The run was blown. Almost half a kilometer from her, a sniper had just given up his familiar corporate life and was ready to step into the shadows.

6 months later

"Attack, attack!" The warriors ran toward their target, weapons armed, screaming wildly. Their opponent was thrown to the ground and was quickly incapacitated.
"Be careful with the stick!" The man who had been thrown to the ground turned his head to one side, laughing, while a girl dug the stick, which had been declared a rifle, into the grass next to her. Her twin sister meanwhile began to tickle her father until all three were laughing in the grass of the park. A few moments later they were back on their feet and went still laughing towards a Rolls-Royce Phaeton, which had parked on the holding strip at the edge of the meadow. A man and a woman had got out and were watching the three with a smile.

"Mamaaa!" The girls ran towards the woman.
"You both look like you're from a war zone. And as if you've had fun." The woman pointed to the girls' clothes, which were dusty and stained with grass. In the meantime the father had reached the limousine and greeted the woman with a hug and the man with a handshake.
"Hey Neal, bro, are you okay?" The man looked at him, but Neal - the father - shook his head briefly and waited for the girls to be put into the car by their mother. Only then did he answer.
"Bruce, we have a code blue." The laughter was gone from the face of both men.
"Fraggers, when are they going to leave you alone?" Bruce hit the palm of his fist. "What do you think for how long?"
"How long what?"
asked the woman, who in the meantime had approached the two of them.
"Neal says there is a code blue."
"Drek. What do you think for how long?"
she was now asking the same question.
Neal shrugged. "I don't know, I'll get in touch with you." He looked into the open Phaeton and kissed his children. "Bye you two, don't be too nice to both of them!"
The two adults hugged him goodbye before getting into the car. "And write me about that shaman girl." the woman called out to him.

Meanwhile 1 km away on a house roof.
"Don, we lost him!"
"What? How could you lose him? Your only job was to watch him."

The two men on the roof looked resignedly at the recording of their commlink. In front of them an almost 1 meter long camera rested on a tripod.
"Don ... he was just gone. We're currently looking at the feed again, but we can't ..."
The speaker fell silent as his jaw clenched and he fell forward on his face. His colleague never got around to picking up the submachine gun before a targeted volley hit him in the temple and he also slumped to the ground, knocked out by small electrical charges.
Still almost silently, Neal holstered his gun and searched the two of them. He pocketed everything that had a matrix signature, unloaded the submachine guns and threw them away.
"Victor? Mel? Do you hear me?" The Don rang out over the loudspeaker of one of the commlinks. Then there was a pause. "Ghost? Is that you?" the voice sounded calmer now. "Ghost, if that's you .. I have a job for you." Neal picked up the commlink and tapped the microphone once to confirm. "Okay, I hope that means yes ..." the Don continued. "Meet me tomorrow 12:30 in the Plaza, I'll send an address to this commlink ..."

I'm withdrawing, I absolutely cannot stomach 6E it seems.
Sorry things did not work out for you Marshmallow. There is nothing wrong with sticking to 5E if that version is fun for you. Wishing you the best of luck in your future games.

Bump

I just wanted to check in to see how things were going. We have a little over a week left, so there is still time to flesh out details and ask any specific questions about character development.

Since there is not a Shadowrun Character Template, we will be using a post to maintain your character details. So, whatever effort is used here can be copied directly over to the character roster.

The Excel Spreadsheet Character Generator has a worksheet that exports everything you need to post here, just in case anyone was not aware of that feature.

@Kenjitsu: Please disregard my character sheet, as I've missed some rule limitations I hadn't been aware of, and the character isn't char gen legal. I'll work to correct it, though it might change the sheet aspect of the character from what it was (cyber parts are stupid expensive and require a lot of attribute investment - the latter was the problem).

The character itself, from an application standpoint, should remain consistent though!

HH, we can work out those details if you are selected, so don't worry too much about it being 100% legal. I am more interested in characters and the story than trying to follow the rules completely as written. If it makes sense and does not break the game for others, we can work out any issues in the character creation process.

Just a reminder that the deadline is January 15th, which is at the end of this week. The last team member will be selected by Monday.

I do want to thank each of the players who made a submission, even those who withdrew.
