Gold Speaks

RECRUITMENT CLOSED AT THIS TIME

Game NameGold Speaks

Game SystemPathfinder First Edition

ThemeThe Exploits of an Established Adventuring Company

FlavourThe Darkness that Lurks Within, Hidden Humour

Plot SummaryThis is the first part where I deviate from the formula.

This is not a game advertisement seeking to run one cohesive campaign.

The vast majority of this offering is designed to be contained within the pages of published game modules as released by Paizo. To start things off, I propose to run Feast of Ravenmoor (basic plot hook at link), a solid module written for third-level characters. At the conclusion of the module, characters will be given the option to level up and continue play with another module, likely The Midnight Mirror.

Iím not going to try to sell myself with a plot hook here. I will have examples of my GM posts linked below if youíre concerned about my style or competence. I have experience with both of the modules mentioned above, and can vouch for their resonance.

Players are only signing up for the first module. At its conclusion, players will be provided with a negotiable amount of downtime, at which point any new players needed will be recruited and integrated.

About the GMHeya! If you donít know me, you should probably keep it that way for the sake of your sanity. No, seriously.

If youíre still reading this, Iím Ziether, as the ďUsernameĒ section at the top of all my posts insists on proclaiming to the entire site. Iím a nutcase full-time father/aspiring educator who has an obsession with these awesome RPGs. I enjoy telling a story and bringing a handful of people along to help make it more interesting than the drivel Iíd create on my own. My games arenít complete sandboxes, but theyíre also not set on rails. Just beware that going off the reservation often leads to challenges that may be impossible to walk away from intact. While Iím pretty dang busy, I make a point of putting effort into my creations. I wouldnít be posting an ad if I couldnít keep up with it on a regular basis (reasonable exceptions due to Real Life). Hopefully I can bring my vision of a fantasy world beyond my own mind and into the experiences of others.

EXAMPLE GM POST FROM PREVIOUS ITERATION
EXAMPLE OPENER FROM IRONFANG INVASION
What Iím Looking ForIíd like to be upfront and honest about what I want in players and characters right here before I even get to the details. I owe it to you to give you the chance to eliminate yourselves before you waste time that youíll never get back. Creating characters and crafting full, detailed applications takes serious time, and I donít want to miscommunicate and distract you from games for which youíd be a better fit. Without further ado:
  • Iím looking for people who can communicate. If youíre going to be away from posting for a while, I get it. Life happens. Please let me (or the group) know as soon as you know itís coming, or as soon after the fact as is reasonable. I understand that sometimes thereís nothing to prevent you from going AWOL, and Iíll hold a spot open for players in good standing for a while, but after several weeks without communication I reserve the right to move on, potentially replacing the player.
  • Iím looking for people who can play a character. In-character knowledge is very different from player or meta knowledge. Sure, you can design your character with generalities in mind, but, for example, I want to see a nice backstory reason or Knowledge (religion) roll before a character goes to their backup bludgeoning weapon against a skeleton.
  • Iím looking for Role Play over Roll Play. Numbers and crunch are a part of Pathfinder, and more so than many other systems. I respect that and expect a certain level of optimization when it comes to decision-making, but it canít come at the expense of the integrity of the character. People have flaws. I want to see them come up at times.
  • Iím looking for people who can write a solid post. Iím not demanding voluminous posts constantly, nor do I employ any sort of word count minimums. Yes, I usually want at least two thought-out paragraphs. More is great, but Iím not going to value verbosity over a more succinct post that is still evocative. All I want is to feel the character. I do care about grammar and spelling, particularly when it comes to homophones, but I can overlook them when they arenít a regular part of a playerís posts. Iíd rather see a post take an extra day and get proofread than get something that could be fixed by a readthrough.
  • Iím looking for people who want to have fun. There may be serious themes in the game, but at the end of the day, youíre in this for enjoyment. I donít want this to be a chore for anyone. I may bend rules in the name of fun, and in return I will ask that players allow me to do the same to a very limited extent and never to outright malicious ends. This leads us into my final point:
  • Iím looking for people who can respect Rule Zero. Iím not a dictator. I donít need the game to strictly follow the Rules As Written to the letter with citations of developer posts to justify things. I will make decisions on matters of interpretation, though, and I need to be able to do so without it being an issue. If you donít agree with my ruling, I invite a politely worded PM on the subject, and I may actually consider changing my decision, but I have to be able to move the game along, and endless infighting about rulings does not facilitate that.
  • I'm looking to keep things comfortable for everyone: As part of any player application, I ask that prospective players privately list any content they are uncomfortable with full inclusion of and any content they are uncomfortable with passing references to. This will be in Secret Text or via PM for privacy's sake. I will list all disallowed content before proceeding to the game's start using the information provided.

Game Info
  • Posting Rate: I will not commit to posting more than 2/week in non-combat situations, though I will aim for that pace. I will work toward 3/week in combat as long as the players can keep up, otherwise the 1-2/week pace will continue.
  • Character Level: 3 (three)
  • Acceptable Races: Dwarf, Elf, Gnome, Half-Elf, Half-Orc, Halfling, Human, and other Paizo-published races of 15RP or less. I will consider others, but I strongly prefer to keep things as simple as possible.
  • Acceptable Classes: All Paizo classes except Vampire Hunter and Omdura. I have a preference for Unchained Barbarian/Monk/Rogue/Summoner over their original iterations, but Iíll accept either way.
  • Archetypes: All Paizo archetypes that fit the flavor will be considered as long as I can get free, legal access to them. Archives of Nethys or d20pfsrd are preferred. Follow all rules regarding mixing archetypes.
  • Traits: Two, or three and a Drawback. Please exclude Campaign and Equipment traits. Please use discretion when choosing Regional or Religion traits, as they need to work into the setting and the characterís background.
  • Alignment: Make me believe itíll work and Iíll accept any of the nine.
  • Starting Money: Third-level average Wealth By Level (3000gp).
  • Ability Scores: 25 point buy.
  • Hit Points: Full at 1st, rolled thereafter.
  • Firearms: Emerging Guns. PCs will have access to means to make guns viable.
  • Religion: Make any strong affiliation with a deity believable. I love the Pathfinder religion lore.
  • Experience: PbP is terrible for leveling up. Iíll keep track of XP/bonus XP, but if I feel the PCs have done enough to level before the numbers add up, theyíll get rewarded with a level.
  • Hero Points: The Hero Points system will be utilized. Suitable characters may take the Anithero alternative and take a bonus feat at 1st level instead.
  • Extras: Background Skills will be in force. Fractional Base Attack Bonuses and Save Bonuses will be used. Elephant in the Room feat tax alleviation is to be utilized.

The deadline for this recruitment is 9pm Pacific on Monday, January 24th. I don't feel like this needs a ton of time, as I am not asking for any significant creative investments at this point. If you have any questions, please ask without delay!

Player ApplicationsI am not looking for a character application at this time. I am looking for players that fit with my own idiosyncrasies as well as each otherís styles.
  • Player Name: Your RPGX Username. Yes, I have it on all your posts, but please humor me.
  • Relative PbP Experience: how long have you been doing the writey-posty-RPG thing? A long time? A few weeks? I just want to have a feel.
  • Favorite Pathfinder Class: doesn't have to be by Paizo, though that doesn't change what I'm allowing. If youíve never played Pathfinder, a hypothetical favorite is acceptable.
  • Favorite Class Archetype: doesn't have to match the class above.
  • Your Favorite Aspect of TTRPGing: combat? Intrigue? Crit fumbles? Your amazing GM, Ziether?
  • Tropes: name 2-4 tropes that frequently make it into your characters' personalities and tell me why you like them so much.
  • One Awesome Moment: briefly (a decent paragraph?) describe one amazing moment in your TTRPG history. If you haven't been playing long, describe something that interested you in playing TTRPGs.
  • House Rules: Indicate that you have read and understand my House Rules. If you don't understand something, ask me!
  • Sample Posts: please provide links to two or three posts you feel exemplify your style as a player. I don't want your best posts. I want average ones. We all end up laying an egg every once in a while, and I want us to all acknowledge it.
  • Declaration: I, [USERNAME HERE], being of sound body and mind capable of working a keyboard or other form of text input device, do hereby indicate my sincere intention to make myself available to post a couple times per week for at least a few months. If I have planned events that will cause absences, I will do my best to communicate them in advance. I will not wait until I have a Post of the Month candidate in my head before composing, but will make average-quality posts if they are called for. I will not open spoilerbuttons with listed Difficulty Classes without first publicly rolling an appropriate check. Finally, I will make an effort to consider giving RPXP to exemplary posts in order to encourage my fellow players.
  • Lines and Veils: Either in Secret Text within a spoiler or in an accompanying PM to Ziether, please let me know what subject matter/situations you are not comfortable fully exploring or seeing mentioned in the game. The site requires PG-13 conduct in general, but I want to work to be reasonably accommodating of individual needs.

Player ApplicationsI am not looking for a character application at this time. I am looking for players that fit with my own idiosyncrasies as well as each other’s styles.

Player Name: OneDarkness or OD or OneD is fine for short

Relative PbP Experience: Years, joined RPG back in 2014 and been around ever since with one or two breaks here and there.

Favorite Pathfinder Class: Its tough, to nail down just one as there are so many good ones, a handful of my favorite ones though are Paladin, Bloodrager, Bard, Cleric/Oracle or Wizard/Sorcerer. I dont play pure martials that often, largely because I like the variety other classes give in regards to gaming and RP opportunities.

Favorite Class Archetype: Tattoo Sorcerer is certainly a go to for my sorcerers, Brazen deceiver for Bards, Theologian for clerics.

Your Favorite Aspect of TTRPGing: I'm a sucker for a good story, I mean as much fun as it is to roll some dice and or pull off some cool character class move, I like to read a good story, and good dialogue with the other players I am playing with. Its awesome when somebody comes up with some thing unexpected or takes something in a whole new way that i wouldnt have thought of that is good for the game and the party as its something i can learn from and hopefully be a better player because of it.

Tropes: 9 chances out of 10 my characters background involves something traumatic that has happened to them, dunno why but it just seems to naturally fit into the background of the characters I envision. Whether its a dead parent or parents, missing sibling, lost past, or the like, something that pushed the player out from their run of the mill day to day life and into the life of an adventurer. Heroic Fantasy, being the good guy/gal who does things not for gold and glory but just to generally be a nice person who will happily donate thousand gold to a orphanage or get side tracked helping the child get their cat down from the tree. Lastly the Human exploring the variety of life around them, one without a great deal of knowledge about other races who knows very little of the world and wants to learn everything about dwarves, or elves, or other monstrous creatures.

One Awesome Moment: Been playing rpgs for its got be close to 35 years now at least, and more games than I can possibly count so there are so many moments its hard to just pick one. My favourite moments though are those ones where the party wins but just barely and you get to just the end of that point and you all look at each other either in person or reading the final post and your like holy crap I can't believe we survived that by the skin of our teeth where we had no business pulling that off. That and I love playing in outplay, only done it a couple times now but the writing is incredible and you really have to step up your game against others who are trying their hardest to out do you as well.

House Rules: Read and am good with it.

Sample Posts: HERE, HERE, and HERE

Declaration: I, OneDarkness, being of sound body and mind capable of working a keyboard or other form of text input device, do hereby indicate my sincere intention to make myself available to post a couple times per week for at least a few months. If I have planned events that will cause absences, I will do my best to communicate them in advance. Application HereinPlayer Name: Pianoman90 - piano and flute man in RL, yet pianoman has been my handle for over 10 years online and it has stuck hard.

Relative PbP Experience: I have been here since 2012, but have taken a couple of breaks from the site. The last break was only due to serious internet issues when we moved to our last place, which was unfortunate because I was knee deep in some great games that I wish I hadn't had to give up.

Favorite Pathfinder Class: I have always had a soft spot for a good magus. The versatility of spell-swording seems to jump out at me. I guess the double of swashbuckler/magus is something I often return to for greater flashy swordplay and fun.
Favorite Class Archetype: My favourite high-level build was a Kensai magus/Inspired blade swashbuckler for very fun and high AC. I ran it in an Outplay here years ago that managed to dodge a full-round attack at level 11 from a dragon, so I think that one ranks as the most fun.

Your Favorite Aspect of TTRPGing: Definitely the unexpected nature. I have a great love of running a game and participating, looking to help move the game along at all times and take strange turns that eventually make sense, but might be misleading at first. The players that I have enjoyed the most have been those who also do unexpected, but ultimately helpful things.

Tropes: There have been a few characters that repeatedly live on in various forms on this site and in RL games. The flashy swordsman is definitely one, as well as the irreverent wizard who 'accidentally' seems to be just in the right place at the right time. The father figure is what got me through Outplay this year, a very standard grieving dwarf barbarian, pulled originally from a background made for Curse of the Crimson Throne, and then used many times in various guises since. An interesting question to get me to think about my style as a player!

One Awesome Moment: My favorite post on this site (and most engaging game for a long time) was in Xian's The Forsaken Plane game. An intensely dark set-up thrust the players into a cackling crone and jester's den. Incredible scenarios were designed to warp morality and create dubious decisions in the party and my character had just reached the end of his tether when he was presented with a supposed opportunity to take out the crone's power base-a group of children somehow bound to her life force. In a moment of desperation, my alchemist/barbarian launched a perfect (crit) throw and bombed the children. It was right at the pointy end of a very tense prologue and I loved writing every minute of that game!

House Rules: Totally fine with me - it is fantastic to shoot straight from the beginning.

Sample Posts: Here is a simple post that (hopefully) gave players and the GM something to work with in response to the challenge of the time. This is typical of what I will write for short interactions, while this one was where I flew off the handle when given the opportunity to create my own direction in the game. I can't go past one of my favorites from Outplay 2020 where I threw the gauntlet down (erroneously) against one of the judges of the day. It was a misguided attempt to get to the bottom of the action, but it was fun to write at the end of a gruelling competition.

Declaration: I, Pianoman90, being of sound body and mind capable of working a keyboard or other form of text input device, do hereby indicate my sincere intention to make myself available to post a couple times per week for at least a few months.

From the previous thread/posting interest:

Humble HeroPlayer Name: Humble Hero

Relative PbP Experience: A long time. 10+ years, in various genres (sci-fi, fantasy, etc)

Favorite Pathfinder Class: Ranger tends to be my go-to, but that's generally because I tend to play retroactively to a group, and take whatever is needed; and for some reason, everyone likes to not be the Ranger, in my experience. That said, I honestly don't mind what class I have, I've been enjoying random selection lately, which makes it more interesting and fun!

Favorite Class Archetype: None. Never gotten to the point of using/needing archetypes. My experience with Pathfinder 1e (or even 2e) is limited, generally because the GMs I've played it with in the past (around tables, face-to-face) have been unreliable and stop the game after a month or two for other games. I'm happy to learn more though!

Your Favorite Aspect of TTRPGing: Socializing. I enjoy the group dynamic, I enjoy reacting to, or having others react to me, and sharing the moments of awe or loss. I generally approach things with a 'we're a group, let's play as a group' mentality, and have tried to bring that into pbp RPing as well. I don't try to steal the spotlight, I don't try to derail an adventure or session, and I'm very flexible when it comes to direction or changes in games - it's for fun, I don't get bent out of shape from it!

Tropes: Mysterious silent type, or the outgoing talkative type. Really depends on the character, and lately I've been trying to vary my character personalities and belief systems, to attempt RPing some out of comfort zone approaches. Unsure if successful yet, but the short version is I'll try anything, because I want to expand as a writer and handle different personalities/tropes.

One Awesome Moment: I was playing a WoD game, brand new characters, and we had to unlock our power. My guy was a football Jock, the quarterback, and when our group of school teens were attacked by werewolves, we had to run through the school and try to escape - or face the threat of death, etc. My guy was athletic, he could run, GM probably fluffed a few rolls to keep us guessing and having those 'we got away' moments. Anyway, group was about to get to the exit, through the gym, when the alpha burst in and cornered us - and right when one of our members was about to be killed (held by the neck by the alpha), my guy grabbed a football and started throwing. He kept throwing and throwing, and got the alpha's attention long enough to have the other grasped member wiggle and escape (with some amazing rolls)... but that left my guy against the werewolf alone, and it was in that moment with the last football, that my character felt a power unleash from within (per GM revelation) and he unlocked the ability to cleave. With footballs. And with a surge, my guy threw the last football, and sheared the alpha's head clean off, and we escaped to become hunters for many sessions after!

House Rules: I indicate that you can roll whenever, for whatever, regarding my character/s. I have no problem with GMs giving me prompts to play out, if it suits a need or whim or reason for the story. Go wild, roll for me as much or as little as you want!

Sample Posts: I'll give you three types of posts from me:

- Low effort example
- Average example & Average example
- Slightly above-average example

My method for posts, first and foremost, is rooting a character in the scene. Descriptions of environment (if not provided), or internal monologue, or a humanizing moment, etc. I will aim to include something that correlates with the scene, around the reactions to other players, while also providing a response prompt every single time - I feel many players forget the latter, and make replies more difficult as a result, because there's nothing to go off.

If you need more, I can provide!

Declaration: I, HUMBLE HERO, being of sound body and mind capable of working a keyboard or other form of text input device, do hereby indicate my sincere intention to make myself available to post a couple times per week for at least a few months.

Lines and Veils: Explicit sexuality. Beyond that, I have no compunctions on my pretend writing, in pretend worlds, with pretend characters. I have no problem with anything if it suits the setting.

Copy-pasting from the prior thread (and still needing to pick One Awesome Moment to share >_>):

SeeksPlayer Name: Seeks.

Relative PbP Experience: One of the first message boards I'd ever been on, a Final Fantasy 9 RP called "Realm of Eternal Rain". I believe that it used FFRPG, convoluted as it would be for an actual tabletop, as the system? Otherwise I've played on other RP-focused sites with character stats, such as a Skyrim forum and Superhero RPG.

Favorite Pathfinder Class: Bard is a lot of fun for me. They combine my three favorite types of characters all in one -- DEX-based melee, support, and skill monkey, probably in that order. Unchained Monk makes the class a lot more viable, as it's one of my favorites in RPGs to begin with. Slayer is also a blast, though it's a more recent one I'd played.

Favorite Class Archetype: Knife Master for Rogues. Coming from JRPGs, I enjoy the idea of thief-types making terrifyingly good use out of a simple dagger. Besides, a Rogue's melee weapons are just a vessel for Sneak Attack damage anyway. Better than the stereotypical rapier these days.

Favorite Aspect of TTRPGing: Having an adventure with friends, where no one party is in full control of the outcome. I enjoy the gameplay aspects, don't get me wrong, but my introduction to TTRPGs with D&D 3.5 blew my mind when it all clicked. It boosted my imagination in ways that video games and cartoons couldn't.

Tropes: Good Is Not Soft, Family of Choice, Heroic BSoD, Fish Out Of Water.

One Awesome Moment: I'd pondered between two of them, but here's one that's more RP-focused. One of my favorite campaigns I've been in to date was a Planescape campaign ran with Pathfinder 1e. It was a sequel to a failed run of Tomb of Horrors -- a "revenge campaign", as the GM puts it. We needed to travel the Multiverse to gather information about Acererak, taken from those who vanquished him after our parties failed, to defeat him again as his cult tries to conquer the planes.

The party had met with the Bleak Cabal, an existential-nihilist faction within the plane of Pandaemonium. Our party had been trying every trick we could to endure the plane's howling winds, known to drive even the plane's inhabitants mad. My character for that adventure was Genevieve, a kitsune ronin, because my main's bardic powers would've been stifled by the winds. Genny's personal virtue is stoicism -- the belief that no matter what hardship she faces (and she has), she will face it defiantly and emerge on top. Learning about the Cabal in their sanitarium, Genevieve could agree with at least the spirit of their ideals: if nothing matters, then find a reason to make existence matter without adding to its suffering. But the party faced a tough decision before long. In order to decode the mad ravings of Silk, a catfolk rogue who went insane from the horrors of Acererak's tomb, at least one of us had to understand his insanity. Which meant, we had to stand outside in the howling winds without ear protection and become at least a little cracked.

Genevieve insisted she volunteered. The other party members for that adventure were a nereid sorcerer and a duskwalker rogue, both too youthful in their nature and personality to subject to this madness. Not unlike sitting under a waterfall in a samurai flick, she disarmed herself and sat meditative in the unending gale. One of the things I adore about the samurai class in PF is how resolute they are, reflected in their class abilities. Because of such determination, Genny passed her Will saves to avoid further psychological damage, with her acquired delusions only applicable while in Pandaemonium. Due to this controlled mental breakdown, she now understood where Silk's spirit resided. The party advanced to a place called the Cave of the Self. There we fought a defensive Silk, manifesting in refracting illusions from a strange crystal formation. In order to hit him, we actually needed to actually miss his AC with low attack rolls. Things such as closing our eyes to invoke a miss chance as if blinded, or using Power Attack to drop the attack bonus, came in handy.

And as if fitting to her sacrificed sanity, with her swinging her ghost touch katana like a baseball bat with her eyes closed? Genevieve landed the finishing blow to the real Silk, knocking some sense into him and getting him to help us out. Oddly fitting too that his gift to us, a Ring of Evasion, tends to go onto my bard or on Genevieve when we adventure. Then again, if not for our summoner's eidolon or the rogue's sneak attacks, I'm the only one playing anyone who's useful in melee. And can you believe that I replayed her in our trip to Mount Celestia sessions later?

House Rules: Read them over. All seem straight-forward and fit PbP, and the last is a general assumption of mine.

Sample Posts: Backstory Blurb, where it'd be relevant to what's happening at the moment. I hope.

Introduction, where I was late to join in OOC, so I made it so IC.

Action Post, where a fight has just started from a near-ambush.

Declaration: I, Rachel "Seeks" M., being of sound body and mind capable of working a keyboard or other form of text input device, do hereby indicate my sincere intention to make myself available to post a couple times per week for at least a few months.

Lines and Veils: Shhh... is a secret o.o

DrowNinjaPrincess's ApplicationPlayer Name: In case you missed it again, it's DrowNinjaPrincess.

Relative PbP Experience: Too long. Too, too long... It's been about 10 years.

Favorite Pathfinder Class: I guess monks, wizards, and sorcerers?

Favorite Class Archetype: I really can't say. There must be hundreds, and I've maybe only played two?

Your Favorite Aspect of TTRPGing: Maybe the fact that combat could be wrapped up in a matter of 5-10 minutes, as opposed to weeks or months. Not that I have ever had that experience. Oh, did you not literally mean sitting at a table? I like being able to roleplay a character and daydreaming what it might be like to actually be them. At least PbP makes it easier in this regard. Everyone uses their imagination, as opposed to what they see and hear in the same room.

Tropes: I usually like characters that are unarmed and unarmored. So that goes hand in hand with my favorite classes. Vow of poverty is something that appeals to me, though its actual implementation is pretty strict and disruptive, I feel.. so I just kind of roleplay it a little, when convenient. I can't exactly explain why, other than the fact that often times in other video games, I try to get by using as few items as possible as well. Maybe it's just a challenge?

My characters also end up being quite good, even to the point of pacifism. While I get that this is D&D and a lot of times we are forced into these situations simply by the nature of the game, at least it means I don't like the idea of killing people just to take their stuff. Again, can't really say why, other than the fact that trying to roleplay someone evil makes me uncomfortable.

One Awesome Moment: My itty-bitty elf monk 'soloing' a twisted ogre abomination all by herself. Long story somewhat shortened: the party was busy fending off undeads on a narrow bridge while my character had leaped across twenty-foot gaps with unknown certain-death abysses below and traded shots with some cultist. The jerk fled and my character pursued. He ran into some building and was yelling, only to be squished, broken, and flung out the window like a rag doll. Then the giant monster bursts through the wall like some Dark Souls boss. This was no ordinary ogre, as it was also apparently some kind of mutant and part-undead, too.

Well my character was no match for this thing, considering she had already eaten a handful of magic missiles and just wasn't strong to begin with. This ogre could probably snap somebody in half like a twig. But there wasn't much I could do except stall. I figured it would charge, and so readied an action to wait at the cliff's edge and then tumble away at the last moment. Oh yes, did I mention there was a cliff which dropped off into the misty abyss just behind my character as well? Thankfully her intelligence and agility paid off, and it worked. The ogre charged her. She tumbled off to the side, and it missed. Then it fell over the cliff edge.

..that's where I would have liked the story to end, because it would have been so awesome, but it made a reflex save to catch the edge. Drat, that wasn't so easy. Still, my monk made some distance and shot it with an arrow as it climbed back up. Then she ducked behind the corner of another small building to play a bit of cat and mouse, making stealth rolls vs the huge beast. But it responded in kind by throwing a boulder into that building, then charging into it, which demolished the whole place and caused rubble to fall on its head. It was at about this time that the rest of the party had dispatched those other undeads, so we reconvened with this lumbering monster chasing my monk, but thankfully it went down quickly with all of our combined efforts.

House Rules: Yeah I read it! Seemed a lot simpler than I thought it would be, and I don't really have a problem with you making rolls for us. If anything, this makes the game go much faster.

Sample Posts:
The primitive pixie guide
The Witchdoctor
The shy elf monk

Declaration: I, DNP, being capable of working a keyboard or other form of text input device, do hereby indicate my sincere intention to make myself available to post a couple times per week for at least a few months.

Relative PbP Experience: No experience with relatives, but plenty of experience otherwise. I've been doing PbP for, uh...well, let's just say when I started I was still in puberty and now I can can discuss chiropractors and joint ointments in detail with my wife.

Favorite Pathfinder Class: Vigilante. Mundane way to do a pile of magical stuff. Has some real classic superhuman vibes and can be flexed into so many different customizations.

Favorite Class Archetype: Ghost Rider Cavalier. Perhaps a bit cringe, but the concept is just so flippin cool. Why yes, I do enjoy playing as the Pale Horseman of Death. 10/10 flavor.

Your Favorite Aspect of TTRPGing: Living a thousand lives. TTRPG lets me explore worlds and lives that would be impossible IRL in a way that is entirely different from "normal" games or simply watching a movie or reading a book. I can get lost in creating a character that I get to know over the course of the game, and forge relationships with the players IRL and their characters vicariously through my own. It is an immensely rewarding feeling to be part of a wonderful shared experience with other people.

Tropes:
1) The normal guy/gal -- someone who is a fairly average person simply thrust into a life they were not expecting

2) Character Symbolism -- idk if this is a trope, but my characters always have symbolism tied into their names, titles, etc. Usually I'll build this out of anglicized foreign languages, careful wordplay/anagrams, etc. Sometimes it's subtle and effective, sometimes not so much...but I enjoy it nonetheless.

3) Subverted expectations -- I like to take an ordinary concept and usually bend it drastically out of shape in one way or another. Have a noble freedom fighter? They're actually just following orders of an evil patron and insanely devoted. Have an Orc Barbarian? Int and Knowledge skills turn out to be their best stat because they grew up in elvish ruins.

4) Extremes/Hyperbole -- Sometimes I like to take a single concept or aspect for a character and see how far I can push it before it becomes unplayable (whether practically or in a party-coherence sense). Once played a character who was an Amnesiac...but made it so that he forgot nearly everything all the time. Vow of Poverty simply because he couldn't remember to carry belongings, ever-changing nicknames for his friends because he'd forget their names, negative mods in every check related to remembering knowledge. Was quite fun, in practice.

One Awesome Moment: I was playing a leshy giant-instinct barbarian (PF2e, get big and use big weapons) dual-classed in Champion for a Fire Goddess. Int was his dump stat -- his speech was extremely broken except for when he was quoting his deity's holy texts or a few sermons he had heard, which were memorized. My party and I were trying to sneak up on a demonic cultist base. I tried to grapple the troll they had guarding the camp and nat1'd the roll. The troll reversed the grapple on me instead. The party sorcerer wanted to cast offensive spells but was worried about me. I told them to cast anyway. Their fireball lit me on fire, but also hit the troll. I ended up being thrown by the troll from the hillside cave down into the cultist base.

My flaming leshy (wood burns well) cannonballed through multiple cultists but Nat20'd his acrobatics for landing. Stood up, looked around, raised his oversized bastard sword aloft, and demanded all the cultists immediately bow down and repent of their demonic worship and convert, "FOR THE GLORY OF THE FLAME!!!" Got a second Nat20 on my intimidation back-to-back. All of the cultists present at the time in that location immediately surrendered and worshipped my character as an emissary of the gods. Once my party finished dealing with the troll they found me still preaching to the cultists who were gathered around my character. I ended that fight nearly out of HP and much worse for wear, but it shifted the entire campaign for a solid five sessions. Still amused that the DM actually just went with it.

House Rules: I roll, you roll, we all roll. What you know about rolling down in the deep? Read and understood. I like efficiency and redundancy, so your house rules work fine by me.

Sample Posts: I'll post here because I think at one point some of these were private? Maybe not.
1) Short, quick post.

2) Mid-length post, fairly average

3) Slightly longer average

4) Longer average, only linked because it's archived. Linky

Declaration: I, Alphaeus, being of completely unsound body and mind, capable of working a keyboard or other form of text input device Whiskey and ice cream permitting*, do hereby indicate my sincere intention to make myself available to post a couple times per weekall the time because I work from home in a job that has lots of slow phases* for at least a few months. Relative PbP Experience: I uhhh, I joined RPGX a few months after Birched back in 05. Back then the site was called DnDOnlineGames. I've had several hiatus', but I always come back eventually. I've also done some PbP stuff on another site. If you want to get super-technical I did some rules free PbP roleplaying waaaaay back in the day of 2003 in the City of Heroes forums on the leadup to release.

Favorite Pathfinder Class: I try to change it up and never play the same class 2x in a row. That said I have a tendency to like classes that favor flexibility. I'll take a wizard over a Sorceror or a Ranger over a Barbarian.

Favorite Aspect of TTRPG: See, do you mean in-person play? Because the best point of that is just joshing with the buddies. I'm also partial to the development of characters and their personal stories. If you mean PbP play, then it's definitely the development of characters and their stories, as well as their relationships.

Tropes: I think a built in angst generator is a good way for a player to help a gm GM to get their hooks into a character. They can develop new problems to work on or endure as play progressesBlessed with Suck. In addition to the standard meaning, most of my characters have some sort of “sociable” aspect where they are likely to take an interest in others. A few of them have been “manipulative bastards” who's manipulation tend to be of the trying to help the good ones succeed type.Guile Hero. Sometimes failures can be more fun than successes. So long as you don't allow them to/ make them result in the story grinding to a halt.
Fumble a seduction roll and knock yourself unconscious on a dresser while sashaying towards the bed. Get tricked by a maybe dead maybe not dead god of deceit into resurrecting a thousand years dead goddess into the corpse of a self sacrificed hero prince... Who happens to be the brother of your boss's fiancee... While also destroying a national treasure...
You know, the everyday stuff.
Gone Horribly Wrong. I like taking stereotypes or tropes, and giving them a twist. No necessarily Inverted, but changed. Maybe the hardboiled detective with debts and a drinking problem is actually a middle aged woman. Maybe the flamboyant swashbuckler is actually a warforged who's persona is just an experiment. Maybe the folksy ranger really wants to be around people, he's just poorly socialized and self-conscious. Maybe the wizard affects the world more with his words and ideas than any magical power he can musterStereotype flip.

One Awesome Moment: OK, so. It's a bit of a run-on paragraph, but here we go.

At a convention where there was a four part game series. In the penultimate game I had a character, a minotaur fighter named Turian raised by dwarves, who had absolutely no skill in deception or sneaking manage to gain access to the enemy camp and gain access to a message runner's message in the middle of a war. The rest of the party attempted to ambush the message runner between the front lines and the enemy's base, but none of them were terribly good at stealth either, so the message runner noticed them early and did an end run around them outside the range of most of their abilities. My character had seen the writing on the wall and instead waited in the open several miles further up the road in a minotaurs being part of the baddie's armycaptured enemy uniform. He called out to the message runner explaining that people had penetrated the back lines and were targeting scouts and messengers. This was perfectly true, my character, Turian was one of those people. The message runner asked what had happened to the rest of the squad, and Turian replied truthfully that Turian being one of the people that killed that squadthey'd been killed by the group sent to penetrate their lines, and offered to escort the message runner back to base, being almost as fast as the message runner's horse and able to run for a very long time. With a diplomacy check, which Turian was decent at, and a bluff check, which Turian passed only due to spending certificates I'd earned in the first two games, Turian convinced the message runner to take him as a bodyguard back to the enemy camp. There the runner Meaning he didn't have to again pass a bluff checkpspoke for him and Turian wound up overhearing not only the report the runner was taking, but the orders being sent back to the front line. Turian “guarded” the message runner almost all the way The other PC's staying hidden in their second ambush since they saw my character with the message runnerback to the front lines before saying that his commander was elsewhere and he'd need to go a different direction. They wished each other well and went their separate ways.

House Rules: Seems reasonable. Barely house rules really. Just a streamlining to keep the game running smoothly.

Sample posts: OK, We'll start off with my most recent in-game post.

We also have a post from my most favorite PbP game so far. I picked one of my favorite chapters, but the post itself was picked randomly (I rolled for the page and picked my first post). Sorry, it's kind of a wordy one.

And here's another one from another game that's currently running. I picked this one because I've worked to give the character a unique voice and also it's much shorter than the others.

Declaration: I do so declare.

Player Name: Admin Dirk, but really, Dirkoth was how I started
Relative PbP Experience: I believe I joined in 2008, August or October.
Favorite Pathfinder Class: I don't have a favorite, I like to try them all. I've even tried the Omdura, but only for a wee bit.
Favorite Class Archetype: There's still a thousand out there I haven't explored, so I have no idea.
Your Favorite Aspect of TTRPGing: Diving into a PC, and trying to experience the imagination of someone else, with mine.
Tropes: Not sure why, but here on RPGX I have gravitated to playing female PCs...and find them more interesting than males. Not sure I have too many tropes I fall into, other than that. Perhaps a naive PC, learning their craft? I have at least two PC's now, that kind of fit that (but they are sooooo very different from each other, in how they are handling their naivete).
One Awesome Moment: In a game where I played a scatter-brained but pun-loving wizard, one of the other PC's (a rogue) was petrified (by spell). While we debated what to do with the statue until he could be returned to human form, one of the other players made a pun. And that set Garig (my wizard) off... into a litany of bad geology jokes and puns. It made everyone groan, and became a long running joke that we returned to several times through the rest of the adventure.
House Rules: You only have one post of house rules, and a magic item. That's not too bad at all.
Sample Posts: I just picked a couple of my most recent posts from games I am currently in... pretty much random

  • Player Name: triedtherest
  • Relative PbP Experience: 2 years (roughly) this site is my only experience of pbp.
  • Favorite Pathfinder Class: Cleric, if I have to choose just one.
  • Favorite Class Archetype: Undead Lord (rarely get the chance to play one)
  • Your Favorite Aspect of TTRPGing: Getting to RP exactly as you want to with people who are doing the exact same thing.
  • Tropes:
-Death Mage: Either Divine or Arcane Casters, obsessed with either raising the Undead or evading their own death (usually both), because who doesn't want to be the immortal leader of an unstoppable army?
-Working-class Hero: Simple people just trying to help out where they can, because sometimes it's nice to be the good guy!
-Greedy Merchant: I like my Characters to have an occupation other than "Murder-hobo", as well as having something to do with their Downtime (assuming they get some). Also, who doesn't like Gold?
  • One Awesome Moment: I played in a 5e Solo pbp game (running concurrently with several other players, playing the same Game). Setting myself a bit of a challenge, I decided to re-create Reginald Jeeves (Valet of Bertie Wooster in the P.G. Wodehouse books) as Mastermind Rogue, a Class/Archetype best known for it's ability to make other characters work better! The game's goal was to rescue some NPC captives from a band of Orcs, including one that is special to the PC (in Jeeves' case this was his Master, Bertie). Working smart, Jeeves trained an owl to assist him, disguised himself as an Orc, talked the townspeople into giving what items/information/help they could, enlisted the help of a sympathetic Kobold who's tribe had been wiped out by the Orcs, set the Orc's mistreated pets against them, killed an Orc Cleric so it's skeleton minions attacked the other Orcs, isolated the Orc Chief and trapped him within a ring of fire before engaging in the longest fight of the game (3 rounds I think). In the end, all the Orcs lay dead, the Captives were freed, and the Kobold was accepted into the Village, after Jeeves had donated all the reward money to rebuilding the damage the Orcs had done.

I am awestruck by the response this has received. I have gone ahead and made an applicant chart to give myself an idea of just how many people I'm looking at, and I've changed the deadline from tentative to firm. I like to give that minimum of a whole week just in case some interested folks don't log in every day.

I want to admit that I am biased, and that I have history with some of the applicants. No matter how many people apply with whom I have enjoyed past games, I am committing to including at least one person (probably two) with whom I have no significant past experience. I strongly believe that allowing myself to get into a rut is unproductive and unfair to people trying to explore what RPGX has to offer.

This recruitment is incredibly straightforward, but I highly encourage questions about the game or any of the information I have included.

Okay, since you really want some questions, I'll ask a few.

I'm on board with rolling our saves to expedite things. Though assuming there is an error due to a forgotten class feature, item, spell, or whatever, and that difference matters, would the results be retconned?

Might prestige classes be a viable option, should these ever become more than a single module?

Lastly, the elephant in the room page is no longer available so.. do you have another source to look at?

The Elephant in the Room link has been updated. The creators now have it as a pay-what-you-like, but free is an option.

We're all human (except a few of those sneaky androids and Change Shape-using dragon spies...). We make mistakes, such as missed details in dice math. In the event that something gets missed, I'm not going to punish the players by insisting on sticking to the original results unless it goes unnoticed beyond the situation itself. I'm not retconning weeks-old posts, but I'm not heartless. One of the reasons I stick to Paizo-published ancestry and class options is to reduce the amount of material that I have to be familiar with (within an absurdly option-heavy game), allowing me to be aware that, for example, one of my players is playing a reaction-heavy Swashbuckler. I will ask players of such classes to look out for posts in their private threads (which I supply) to tell me that they want to use items/spells/class features as reactions so I don't miss them. Mostly I just try to communicate effectively. It makes for a smoother game.

Prestige classes will absolutely be acceptable as long as their prerequisites are met. As I've never advertised for this sort of scenario at a starting level above 4, I haven't made a big deal of it. I'm a big fan of the very lore-centric prestige classes available for Pathfinder, and I would love to see some of them get some time in the sun, should the game reach the right point.

Thanks for the questions!

  • Relative PbP Experience: This is my 11th year on the sight. It will be 12 in October.
  • Favorite Pathfinder Class: Warpriest /Divine Face Smasher
  • Favorite Class Archetype: Ummm Titan Mauler Barbarian for massive weapons.
  • Your Favorite Aspect of TTRPGing: Combat and my amazing DM Dirk who let me into my first game and still going strong.
  • Tropes: Grim Warrior, Unwilling Hero. I don't know why. I seem to always create characters that either don't want to be the good hero but are forced into it or the cynical fighter whose seems doom around every corner but still strives to protect the group anyway.
  • One Awesome Moment: One of my favorite moments was in an old 4e based Fallout game. I was playing a Super Mutant who was a remnant of the Master back on the West Coast who had been forced further and further into the Nevada desert before running into a group of humans (the rest of the PCs). He was contemplating what his life meant and his life ahead of him. He had done terrible things in the name of the Master and than had been pursed by the BoS out of his home before being exiled in a coup from the rest of his people. Now he was forced to survive by staying with a group of humans that for the longest time he saw only as prey.
  • House Rules: Indicate that you have read and understand my House Rules. If you don't understand something, ask me!

I have read and understand the above.
  • Sample Posts: Average Combat Post for Masher, my longest running grapple Barbarian

Planning session to take down the BBG for Captain Bart, my gambler turned hero.

An opening post for my navigator. The game did not last very long.
  • Declaration: I, Mightymconeshot, being of sound body and mind capable of working a keyboard or other form of text input device, do hereby indicate my sincere intention to make myself available to post a couple times per week for at least a few months.
