Just Outside the End of Time

Game NameJust Outside the End of Time
Game SystemPF 2e
ThemePodunk backwater town at the literal end of time
FlavourA smidge ridiculous, sprinkled liberally with overly vivid descriptions, where literally anything can be
Plot Summary
Just Outside the End of TimeChronos, the Grand City of Temporal Travesty! A shrine to hubris, a celebration of dream and horror. A people, now forgotten to the passage of time (hilariously), tried to break the rules of reality and travel to the past. Unfortunately for them, reality is very strict with its rules, and the entire civilization was uprooted and thrown to the end of all things. Now a scattered series of plateaus interlinked by every flying contraption ever devised, the cities of this lost civilization have become the roots of life for those unlucky enough to find the cracks that Chronos created with their breach of logic and existence.

Of course, you don't live in or even remotely near Chronos. No, you live in what is considered the furthest possible locale, a small village on a small plateau living small lives. Named Brinkton for being the closest physical thing to the roiling Breach of materialized 4th dimensional goo, AKA the giant ball of swirling time that functions as a "sun", the only reason anyone has to visit your home is either scientific curiosity or getting away from what passes for law near Chronos. Whether you are the child of a long-term resident of Brinkton, a new arrival from a time rift, or a new immigrant for mysterious and quite probably nefarious reasons, you live in this utterly remote and Last Stop location.

The fun thing about living in the end of time is that anything and everything is here. Of course, it's rare that there's anyone who can repair or properly utilize some of the more advanced technologies that slip through a crack, but if you can think of it, it's probably here. There are humans from every stage of humanity, aliens from the entire span of their alienity, androids and robots and horrid mutations and just about anything you can envision, all getting dropped into the End and forced to deal with each other. It is, to borrow a metaphor, the ultimate melting pot.
CharactersWhich brings me to you, the players, and what I need from you. As stated, you are citizens of Brinkton. But you are the cream of the crop, the best a place like this has to offer. That means you get to start at level 2! Booya! Every ancestry and heritage and class and archetype on the Archives of Nethys is available, as long as you can find a way to fluff it into our odd little setting. Want to play a Gnoll Sorcerer? Well, are you a mutated human after the 36th century DNA wars who uses bio-infusions to create extra tentacles to attack their foes, or a member of the those hairy nano-savants the G'Nolls from Anquine Prime? The point is, please design whatever the heck you want, and please have fun with it. Just because you're living in a backwater doesn't mean you aren't possessed by the AI collective of a dead alien species, nor that anyone would bat an eye if you are.

Extra Character Creation Rules in place -

Gradual Stat Bonuses : Meaning instead of a massive swell of power at 5th, you get a +2 at 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th, skip 6th, and start again at 7th, repeat.

Free Archetype : Yep, you get that sweet sweet archetype FOR FREE. And since you're starting at 2nd, you actually get to start with it! Every even level, you'll get a free feat to use for said archetype, so it should definitely flesh things out for you.

Fluffed Power Sources : Since there's no pantheons to work with, and I'm kind of disallowing magic, everything that I say is available (which is, again, everything) will need to be fluffed to be sci-fi in some way. Psionics, nanobots, AI "gods", fancy weaponry; whatever you need to invent to get your class running, throw it in there.

Me Dropping Weird Crap on You : I tend to like customizing, which means I'll probably hand out unique bonuses to the tune of funky items, distinct bonuses to specific rolls, free feats, all sorts of stuff. Which basically means, if there is something you want later on (an item you like, a pet you think would be nifty, whatever), feel free to bring it up so I can figure it out and work it in.

Otherwise, character creation will be pretty straightforward for 2nd Edition. Please find in my next post a character sheet to quote and use!

ApplicationName :Remember, literally anything can exist here (well, anything non-magical)! Feel free to make up whatever!

Ancestry/Heritage :

Class :

Archetype :

Background (mechanical) :

Description :

Link to Brinkton : I'm eschewing the traditional "backstory" prompt, as I need to build Brinkton around the characters. The following questions will help me establish this much better.

Important Person 1 :Family, friend, mentor, whathaveyou

Important Person 2 :

Key Event :Some defining moment, be it watching your parents fall off the plateau edge into the eternal nothing below, or a really happy birthday

General Background :

Oh, and to clarify. I understand PF2E is not the chosen one that OG Pathfinder was. If someone is interested in the set up but is unfamiliar with Second Edition, I will gladly help you work it all out.

Any questions or anything? Do folks need more concrete jumping-off points?

Sounds like a cool setting. I am interested and will try to have a character up by the weekend. Is it a sandbox setting or do you have an adventure planned?

Question about the magic. If I wanted to play a wizard for example. I can do that and it functions just like a core rulebook wizard but instead of saying I magically cast magic missile I would release a couple hunter seeker drones that are a technological Reskin of the spell? Instead of a breath weapon i might be packing a hidden flamethrower somewhere?

There is some overarching plot in the works, but a lot of it will be what the players decide to do in/with Brinkton.

To your second question, exactly. Perfect examples, on a more contemporary build.

Ha, yes, I'd say that's a part of it. I mean, if anyone chooses to play a character that wasn't born in Brinkton, they have carte blanche to create whatever civilization/species/history they like.

So technically you could play Elvis the bard necromancer that uses nanobots and pelvic movements to raise his minions and the temperature in the room?

Is magic replaced with science? or is it Magitek?

Asking cause I had a ferromancer concept I've been wanting to try

Yyyyes, I'm not going to say no, but I'm not really an Elvis fan.

That's fine, I just need you to have somewhere to go with it?

I was going to just say replaced with science, but if the "magic" is explained as some system of managing some natural force through a fancy device or something... It's definitely intended to be more sci-fi, but we can make whatever concept you want fit, I think.

This game offers a rare opportunity to go over the top:

Name: Featherhead

Ancestry/Heritage : Poppet (straw; medium).

Class : Bard, Warrior muse.

Archetype : Sentinel; might also take Bastion at higher levels.

Background: Refugee (He was rejected by the society he was created to fit into,)

Story: He has wandered through history, drifting and not playing a big part. Sometimes he had wealth or power, but he didn't try to hold it for long...there were other parts to play, and another town down the road...until there weren't!

Description : He looks like a normal, well-dressed human, but his shadow and reflection are that of a scarecrow. He has rather light eyes, skin, and hair, and tends to walk 'heavy' (the articulation of his joints is not the best, so he has low DEX).

Link to Brinkton : He is tied to this edge community by the fact that he doesn't fit in anywhere else. Being an immortal magical puppet, he has been forced to keep moving so people don't notice he doesn't age. Now, he has reached the end of time; there is no place further to go, and no future to plan for.

Important Person 1: The theatre director, who lets him perform small parts, earning trivial subsistence income and honing his skill.

Important Person 2: He is somewhat attracted to the girl in the coat check room. It has been a long time since he bothered trying to form any relationships, but now that there is no more road to run down, he may have to settle down.

Key Event: His life has been shaped, possibly deformed, by the bad reaction everyone had to seeing his reflection in the hall mirror during the first big party he attended. He tried to give back the magic which had created him, but he was made too well for that. After a few months standing in the garden and swaying threateningly at crows and rabbits, he grew bored and left.

I may join this now that I reread the rules (I was slightly confused by the ability score increases for some reason, and don't know why).

Also going to apply with a poppet, but this time a brain in a jar in a doll, psionically controlling it.

Cake And FrostingName: Cake (and Frosting)

Ancestry: Automaton (Mage Automaton, small)

Class: Oracle (Ancestors Mystery flavored as Dissociative Identity Disorder)

Archetype: Sorceror (Imperial bloodline)

Background: Martial Disciple

Description: Cake has dissociative identity disorder, and has had it since her brain was encapsulated and put in a doll against her will. Her body is a mechanical contraption that passes as a doll, though calling it a machine is a misnomer; it is in fact an articulated doll controlled through the use of psionic power. The intricate workings are made of steel, but there is a soft covering over the body that passes as skin (and regenerates as such), in essence making her look like a halfling.
Image

Link to Brinkton: She just kind of found her way here through an accidental time skip portal, though she has no interest in going back.

Important Person 1: Titus March, the human who acclimated her to this new time period.

Important Person 2: Pepper, a poppet with the same backstory.

Key Event: I mean, the only event that could really be called a "key event" in her life would be when her brain was put in a jar against her will by a powerful corporation in her time, as an "involuntary experiment." She doesn't remember anything else before this, and barely even remembers the event itself.

General Background: Cake, or as she was known at the time, Clarabel, was a psionic savant her whole life. She never knew what it was like to be without the power to make her world greater, even if it was in a crowded, crime-ridden city. She had her first job at 18, working for a security company, where she was trained to be the sole security force of the location if need be.

But the corporation she was guarding got word of her abilities quickly enough, and were currently studying and experimenting on her kind. She was once a human, full of dreams and aspirations. They took those out of her, the same way they took out her brain and encased it in a metal shell, which itself was attached to a mindless, very articulated body, later known as Frosting when they renamed Clarabel to Cake.

The experiment was obviously a success, or she wouldn't be here, but they marked it as a failure solely because she lacked her former life's memories (and developed a mental disability from the trauma), even though she quickly adapted to the new body's sensor suite and movement within days of being without her former body.

When she was released from their custody, she almost immediately tripped into a "time skip portal" (as she called it), ending up in Brinkton, with only herself and a fellow brain-in-a-jar who also fell through.
