Game Type

Game Hook

The NCPD is an underfunded, underequipped, understaffed organization where every officer puts their life on line each day. It's no surprise then that most badges in the NCPD have lost faith in their thankless jobs. An atmosphere of apathy and corruption pervades the department, while many officers on the street react with brutality and aggression due to the stress and nature of their work.

Nevertheless, some badges still wholeheartedly believe in defending ordinary citizens and making sure the urban jungle doesn't descend into complete chaos. For them a badge still means something in this city and a gun is still a tool to protect and serve. Run into one of these zealots and most gangoons will get on their knees, hands behind their head. Refuse, and they're almost certain to get a bullet.

You are one of these badges. Specifically, a member of the NCPD's Homicide Division. There's never a shortage of cases, for the criminal element works around the clock (and so must you), but there always seems to be a lack of suspects, witnesses, evidence... it's an uphill battle every day, all day, but someone has to do it. Night City already balances on the razor's edge between complete anarchy and corporate despotism; the fact that there are still decent police willing to make an effort to establish law and order is but one of the few hopes that all might not descend into total chaos or tyranny.

It's a thankless job. Burnout comes fast and hard, if you even survive long enough to burnout in the first place.

Do you have what it takes?

Playstyle

Players will be Night City Police Department homicide detectives who will face not only the harsh realities of a violent city caught up in constant civil, political, and gang-related conflict, but also the corruption and mundanity of a bureaucratic system of justice stretched far beyond its capacities. In particular, there will be one (1) Senior Detective and one (1) Rookie Detective who will operate as partners on various cases that are passed down from command.

This is a duos game. It need go without saying that there will be plenty of opportunities to dive deep into your character's background and relationships. Personal drama will be the game's bread and butter. The professional and private relations of our two protagonists will be front and center alongside the burdens of their police-related duties.

This game will cater to serious and mature themes (within RPGX boundaries) that are not for the faint of heart. We'll be shooting for exaggerated Neo-Noire, replete with moodiness, melodrama, interpersonal relationships, and palpable atmospheric vibes. Think Blade Runner, China Town, Twin Peaks, Zodiac, etcetera...

In this game you can expect to do any of the following on a typical case: investigate murder scenes, talk to witnesses, collect evidence, interrogate suspects, follow leads, eat crappy take out, manage personal affairs while still on the clock, deal with inter-office politics, get into firefights (related to the case or not), apprehend your guy(s), write an official report, get praised (or chastised) by the Chief, go home and do it all over again the next day.

Don't forget to add your biometric signature to your timesheet before you go home. NCPD is not responsible for payment on undocumented time.

Application Details

Number of Players: 2
Application Deadline: July 20th

Character Creation

Role: Any. You are not required to pick Cop. You may pick any role available so long as it is, thematically, tailored the position of an NCPD homicide detective. For example, if you pick Corp then you might be a liason-detective who has special authorization to investigate murders within areas that are usually considered corporate jurisdiction. A Fixer could be a criminal that flipped informant or was deputized. Rockers might be rising stars within the department who've developed a cult following or have learned to navigate the trench of bureaucracy with relative ease. So on and so forth — be creative!

Lifepath: Complete Package.

Stat Allotment: 62 Points. The only limit is that no STAT may be higher than 8 or
lower than 2.

Skills: Complete Package (Calculated) Characters get almost complete control over their Skills. Like Edgerunners, these Characters get 86 Skill points to raise up any Skills they want. But unlike Edgerunners, except for Basic Skills that all Character types must have (see below), the Complete Package Player can put the rest of their 86 points in any Skills they want. In the Complete Package Method, four things should be kept in mind:
  • No Skill can be higher than 6.
  • The following Skills must be at least Level 2: Athletics, Brawling, Concentration, Conversation,
  • Education, Evasion, First Aid, Human Perception, Language (Streetslang), Local Expert (Your Home),
  • Perception, Persuasion, and Stealth
  • Skills marked in the Master Skill List with a (x2) cost two Skill points to increase in Level by
  • one. All other Skills cost one Skill point to increase in Level by one.
  • Don't forget the 4 Levels of Language you get free based on the Cultural Origin section of your Lifepath

Guns / Gear / Gadgets: You get 2,550 Eurobucks (EB) to buy any weapons, armor, gear, and cyberware you want. Just hit the lists and start shopping. Keep what you don't spend. Eurobucks will be dispensed in-game on a semi-regular basis ala a paycheck and bonuses.

Application Requirements
Applicants will need to create two (2) characters. A Senior Detective and a Rookie Detective. If selected for the game, you will only play one (1) of the two characters with your co-player being the other half.

Applications will be judged based on format neatness, coherency, and character mood / feel / fit.

Basics: Name, age, race, sex, badge number (format: NCPD-#####), senior or rookie, etc.

Vice: Your character has a vice, be it illegal, exotic, or mundane. What is it? How did you develop it?

Appearance: Detail what you think necessary and leave out what isn’t. I’m fond of cool or interesting pictures that help bring a description to life, if you're looking for bonus points.

Background/Lifepath: Overall backstory. How you joined the force, how long you've been there, memorable cases, how do you feel about the job, etc. Be sure to include events in your Lifepath.

Hierarchy Preference: Would you prefer to be the Senior or the Rookie in this partnership? Why does this appeal to you? FYI: This is not a guarantee.

F.A.Q. So, wait, why two characters for one appliction?: I will be picking only two (2) players for this game. It's a duo game. Therefore, in the interest of getting a better variety of character options, as well in order to try and find characters who are best compatible (which could mean a lot of things) with one another, I am asking that you draft both a Rookie and Senior Detective. If you, the player, are selected for this game then you will only play one (1) of those characters. I will try and pick your preferred role, but if one or the other works best for a certain dynamic I reserve the right to request your alternative.

Where do I roll for my Lifepath?: Look no further, friend. You've found the spot. Lifepath Generation

Just curious how noob friendly this system is, because the concept sounds awesome, though I would have a strong preference for playing the bookish new recruit over the battle tested vet.

It's pretty new-player friendly, relatively basic attribute+skill system and a fantastic setting.

It's as Mallow said. Not really that difficult, just requires a few passes of a skill check or two and you've got it.

Full disclosure: this will be my first run at a Cyberpunk RED game as a GM, so we'll all learn together.

This seems really interesting are you looking for players to team up on an application. Love the Cyberpunk game didn't realize they made an RPG.

Players are not required to team up for the application, but I am also not against anyone doing that either.

It will not change the selection process.

Great question.

Believe it or not CP2077 is based on Mike Pondsmith's Cyberpunk universe of Cyberpunk 2020. CD;PR and Mike Pondsmith collaborated on the creation of 2077 and the creation of The Witcher TTRPG system.

Hey, JaredSyn. I'll work on an app together with you, if you are interested.

@Chylopan To clarify, you want each player to submit two applications: one senior detective and one rookie detective? But, we will only be playing one of those characters after the party of two players is selected, either the Rookie cop of the senior cop?

If the above is correct, I assume you will be picking one senior cop and one rookie cop from between the four player characters submitted by the two players chosen?

Thanks, just wanted to clarify before I writing up an app.

@Chylopan Followup question. For the lifepath, you want us to pick from the tables or roll on them? If rolling, where would like the rolls made?

@Silent Rain - You have it correct. Every applicant will create two characters: one Rookie Detective, one Senior Detective. If you, the player, are selected for the game, then you will be playing one of the two characters you created — whichever I liked best, or think fits best, or meshes better with the other player I selected and their two options.

If you want to roll for your Lifepath, I have a thread up for it here:

Lifepath Generation

Character Charles Vance
right-aligned image

Name: Charles Vance
Age: 42
Race: North American
Sex: Male
Badge number: NCPD-00137
Senior Officer

Vice: Smoking

Appearance: Charles is not your typical clean cut officer. His position as an investigator allowing him more freedom. His hair is brown with light gray streaks here and there. He has strong facial features and brown eyes. He stands about 6' tall and weighs around 200 lbs. He normally wears a button down shirt and tie, along with durable brown or grey jeans. He is rarely seen without a cigarette in his mouth a chain smoker of the highest degree.

Background/Lifepath: Lawman/Charles grew up in a rundown once nice neighborhood. His father worked for Arasaka as a maintenance technician. While the neighborhood wasn't great he was safe growing up for the most part. In his late teens Charles learned the harsh reality of the gangs in his neighborhood. One evening while out with a friend his parents and younger sister were victims of a crossfire when two gangs had a firefight. Charles was left to fend for himself with the small amount of money from his fathers insurance.

That was the catalyst for his choice to go into law enforcement. After finishing school he went straight into the academy, and never looked back. Not long after he met his future wife Ellen, and a year later they were married. Sadly Charles was more focused on his work than his home life and they drifted apart leading to his eventual divorce. Charles has lived alone ever since. When people ask telling them he is married to his work.

Character Application Victoria (Vic) Carlisle
right-aligned image

Name: Victoria (Vic) Carlisle
Age: 27
Race: North American
Sex: Female
Badge number: NCPD-09246
Rookie Officer

Vice: Speed, Fast Cars and Bikes

Appearance: Vic is a physically attractive young woman, with short red streaked black hair and some obvious cyberware on her face up to her eyes. She typically wears her riding leathers, everywhere she goes. Her jacked being her most prized possession.

Background/Lifepath: Nomad/Vic grew up among a pack of nomads called The Vagabonds. Growing up her life was filled with excitement at least in her eyes. Traveling all over with her family, seeing new places and experiences. Of course being a Nomad had its drawbacks as well often people did not welcome them and they often setup camp outside the actual city.

From an early age she took to working on cars and Bikes, her favorite being the latter. As soon as she was old enough working with her father to build her own bike, which she treasured. Life as a Nomad wasn't an easy life most often and moving certainly didn't give one the chance to make friends outside the camp. She was riding as soon as her bike was done and by the time she was a teen, she was quite the accomplished rider on bikes, and a good driver as well.

When she turned 21 she was off on a run with a couple other Nomads, escorting a shipment her and her companions on bikes escorting the van, which carried some sort of cargo. What they didn't know was it was stolen Corpo gear. The escort went fine, and was a successful delivery. While they were gone though the Corp found out who stole the goods and made a tactical strike on the Nomad camp killing nearly everyone the few who survived scattering. Upon returning they found the camp in ruins and most of the people she called family including her parents dead. Vic was devastated her entire family gone and their pack wiped out.

Her companions decided to make their way and find another pack to join up with, but Vic had a deep seated need to stay behind and find out who killed her pack. So taking to the city she did some asking but nothing panned out. She realized if she wanted to find those responsible she needed more training and support. Vic decided to join the academy, and graduated high in her class. Assigned to night city as a patrol officer for a short while before catching a break and being assigned to criminal investigations.

Character 1 - Victoria Essex
right-aligned image

Name: Victoria Essex
Age:36
Cultural Origin: Western European
Sex: Female
Badge Number (format: NCPD-15975):
Senior or Rookie: Rookie

Vice: Everything Victoria does is calculated and exacting. She may not be able to outgun or outfight someone, but she doesn't need to when she is already three steps ahead of them. Her addiction to Boost came early in her career when she came to enjoy the clarity it provided her already sharp mind, only increasing her edge over the competition.

Appearance: Victoria is an attractive woman, with no visible cybernetics. Her wardrobe is almost exclusively high-end and expensive, with every detail of her appearance crafted to elicit an intended effect. More than that however, is the presence and authority she exudes.

Background/Lifepath: Victoria was the child of two hard-working corpo technicians. They lived in a nice enough house, drove an average car, and wanted for few things. She hated it, and could never understand why her parents accepted the mundane state of their lives, like hamsters on a wheel going nowhere. She decided early in her life that she would choose a different path.

Her obsession with learning was fueled by her desire to become better-than. Yes, she could pursue a career with one of the mega-corporations, there was certainly power there, but also a leash. Victoria wanted the power, but she also wanted to be in control of her own life as well.

By the time she had finished school, she had already begun twisting people to her own designs, using them for favors or outright blackmailing them to get what she wanted. This only escalated from there, and by the time she was twenty-five, she had become one of the city's foremost fixers for the elite. Exotic drugs, weapons, bribing judges, getting out of the city, you name it. If you could pay, she could solve whatever problem you might have.

This all changed however, when she was caught by chance on a camera from an adjacent building from the one she was it. She rarely got her own hands dirty, but did make exceptions on occasion. A competitor of hers had finally tried to zero Victoria for good. She had found out about it first and was able to get the upper hand, putting a bullet in her head before she had the chance.

It was not even twenty-four hours later when a detective Charles Vance knocked on her office door and showed her the video of her executing someone in cold blood. He had been authorized to offer her a choice: be charged and sentenced by a judge that they knew was not in her pocket, or quickly and quietly join the NCPD, using her connections and resources to aid the department as a rookie detective. She hated the choices, but figured staying out of lockup provided her with more options, so long as she didn't have to wear a uniform...

Hierarchy Preference: Victoria has no experience working on the right side of the law, and so would only really make sense as a rookie cop.

Character 2 - Frank Marlowe
right-aligned image

Name: Frank Marlowe
Age:48
Cultural Origin: North American
Sex: Male
Badge Number (format: NCPD-07434):
Senior or Rookie: Senior

Vice: Frank is an alcoholic. Whiskey quickly became his drink of choice for how he handled the debauchery he was tasked with investigating on a daily basis. It started out as a way to de-stress after work, but as the decades wore on, there is seldom a moment during the day where he is not somewhat intoxicated, even on the job.

Appearance: Frank is a mess. His clothes are usually wrinkled (and sometimes the same ones he had worn from the day before), and he sports a perpetual five-o'clock shadow. He rarely ever takes off his long coat (which is needed to hold his flask). One of his arms is synthetic, the outcome of an altercation with a juiced-up perp years ago.

Background/Lifepath: Frank grew up a 'zoner', with a gun in his hand and learning quickly to keep his head on a swivel. Life was not easy, but he and the others that lived there were happy, after a fashion. He took his first life when he was seven, finding that he had a strong urge to protect others.

Many of the others that Frank lived with thought little of stealing or killing others to get what they needed to survive. He understood the need that drove them to do this, but he just could not get himself to accept that justification. In his mind, it was not 'right', and so it was wrong; even if it meant that he might not eat that night.

Frank started his tenure as a young bright-eyed rookie cop, determined to make a difference in the city. By the time he had become a detective, he understood the score and how things really worked in Night City. Even still, he was solving real crime now, and still held onto a flicker of hope that he might some make a difference. Unfortunately, there were far too many homicides to be investigated, and he knew some criminals were walking away scot-free. Even the ones they did catch were often released due to a 'technicality' or a judge releasing them for some vague reason. It seemed the whole thing was rigged, that true justice was a lie. In the end, the one thing that kept him motivated to trudge through one day after another, was found at the bottom of a bottle.

Hierarchy Preference: Frank would be the senior cop. His entire career as a cop would justify this position.
